Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 31

Tough fixtures for many of the usual front runners in Gameweek 30 meant our last Captain Poll saw no player emerge as a stand-out option.

It should be a different story this time around.

Arsenal host a West Ham side they destroyed 5-1 in the reverse fixture, while Manchester United welcome back top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.4) for their home tie with Everton.

The big Swede has been sorely missed over a three-match suspension – Jose Mourinho’s charges have scored just once in the league, away to Middlesbrough in Gameweek 29.

Having been involved in half of all the Red Devils’ league goals, the 26.1%-owned veteran looks a strong front-runner against a Toffees side that has shipped seven goals and failed to win in their last four road trips.

Gunners’ top scorer Alexis Sanchez (11.6) is another set to compete for top spot after scoring three times and assisting another goal in that West Ham rout earlier in the season. Over the last 10 Gameweeks, the 26.9%-owned Chilean has delivered attacking returns on eight occasions.

The Hammers come into this encounter in woeful defensive form, having shipped 13 goals and failed to earn a clean sheet in their last six.

But handing Sanchez the armband comes with a slight caveat – he might once again be handed a role on the left flank, where he mustered just one off-target goal attempt at home to Manchester City yesterday.

Liverpool could offer a source of top performers in our latest poll, as Jurgen Klopp’s troops welcome a Bournemouth side that has conceded 31 times on the road.

With Sadio Mane expected to miss out after picking up an injury in Saturday’s Merseyside derby, that game’s star turn, Philippe Coutinho (8.3), will likely attract considerable interest. The Brazilian has already gathered more than 84,000 new FPL owners, after a goal, assist and maximum bonus points return at the weekend.

In Mane’s absence, Divock Origi (6.1) could earn a start. Given the 3.3% owned Belgian has scored or assisted in three of his last four appearances, all off the bench, he may be a shrewd option for those looking to take a risk with the armband.

Roberto Firmino (8.5) should also garner votes, having delivered attacking returns in four of his last five league starts, including a double-digit haul at home to Arsenal in Gameweek 27.

The favourable home matches for form sides continue at the King Power Stadium, where Leicester City take on Sunderland. Jamie Vardy’s (10.0) four goals in as many fixtures since Craig Shakespeare took charge puts the 14.6% striker among the likely poll favourites. This recent record is set to put team-mate Riyad Mahrez (9.0) in the shade, even though the Algerian has scored twice under the new regime.

Among those with an away fixture that could attract attention are Spurs’ trio of attacking midfielders Christian Eriksen (8.7), Dele Alli (9.0) and Heung-Min Son (7.0). They’ll be at the Liberty Stadium, where Swansea City have shipped 30 goals – more than any other side at home.

Of this selection, the 30.2%-owned Alli looks to be the favourite, having delivered attacking returns in all four of his last league starts.

Crystal Palace’s visit to Southampton on Wednesday night offers a pair of intriguing differential candidates for the armband in Christian Benteke (7.0) and Wilfried Zaha (5.7).

The pair registered a goal and assist each away to Chelsea and have proved particularly effective away from home, scoring 13 times between them on their travels, compared to just three goals in total at home.

The Saints somehow kept a clean sheet against Bournemouth at St Mary’s at the weekend, but over their last six matches they have generally been in poor defensive form, giving away 10 goals.

With Chelsea hosting Manchester City, interest in Diego Costa (10.7), Eden Hazard (10.2) and Sergio Aguero (12.7) is set to be limited, although with both sides conceding twice in Gameweek 30 this could be a good fixture to back a premium attacker.

The Blues’ 37.4%-owned Spain forward has had more close range efforts than any other player over his last six matches, with City’s 21.8%-owned talisman notching the second highest tally over the same period.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We’ll be back to check in on the progress of the poll later, ahead of the Gameweek 31 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

The BB chip is often said to be best used in gw37, as so many teams have a double. You can then have up to 15 DGW players and enjoy a massive score.

However, the rotation risk is traditionally massive come gw37. I remember Balders (?) researched this last year and found a significant increase of rotation in 37 compared to 34.

I am thinking about using BB in 34 instead. I could then, with FTs and one hit, get Valdes and Gibson (bou, SUN), Zaha (tot, liv), Rojo and Ibra (bur, mci). I already have Valencia. This can then add to my already strong line up for that week with good fixtures for Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Watford, Everton and Arsenal.

It is perhaps better to look at it as BBing in my case Pickford (mid), Alonso (SOU), Robertson (WAT) and Sané (MUN). Realistically there are one or two CS in there for the defense, and I would expect between 14 and 25 Points. This would be better than last year, when I used it with 15 dgw players and only got 13 points from it.

The added advantage is that I can then use the WC to streamline my team for 37, focusing my budget on 11 nailed players. If I use WC in 36, I would likely need further transfers to get 15 out in 37.

If you have an opinion on this, I would be grateful to read it.

They aren't the best, no. Boros are good though. It's just that in 34 I would actually expect my playes to start both, whereas I'm not so sure in 37.

Just the defenders, and Zaha as the 5th mid. I don't think de Roon warrants a hit, do you?

I think nailed on DGW players do warrant a hit if you're getting a SGW player out with a poor fixture, but depends on your formation, if you're going for a 3-5-2, he's viable.

The de roon problem for me in GW34 is who to bench. At the moment I have..
              Sanchez, Siggy, Sterling, Eriksen
              Kun, Llorente, Kaku
Although there will be some changes on this between now and GW34 it would be difficult to start De Roon over any of that 7 with the decent GW34 fixtures they have.
AOA would have helped me if I still had it :/

Yeah, I think with that line up you would only start him with the bench boost chip.
I don't think AOA is a good chip for 34 due to defenders from MUN and MID having so good fixtures, they may well outscore attackers in that round.

You can at least choose them after the previous gameweek is finished and after listening to the press conferences for gw37, that gives a better indication than choosing them a full gw ahead.

Filling your bench with double gameweekers doesnt mean you get 8 extra games. It means you are a bench w***** and actually only have 4 extra games from those 4 players in your outfield you wouldnt have played otherwise.

You are correct - and you need to be prepared that you probably won't get 15 doublers if you do attempt it. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't necessarily do it in GW37. Your strategy of 11 'nailed' players for GW37 is also still likely to suffer from the same rotation issues as a bench boosted 15.

      1. Bunk Moreland
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

Yeah I've thought about that, but it is easier to predict 11 players starting than 15. I was burned a bit last year but it was partly my own fault, gambling on players like Fosu-Mensah to keep their place.
I am open to the view that 37 might still be better, are you going for 37 Pasqualinho?

Thanks for the feedback Pasqualinho. The decision does depend on your team, I see that I am likely to bench players with good fixtures (mid, SOU, WAT) and I am thinking it might be as good as it gets, adding the advantages of a 37 WC as opposed to a 36 WC.

Well for the record I 'liked' all my bench players in GW30 and almost clicked on the BB button.

Grant, Maguire, Brunt and Son would have brought me 17 points. Decent but not great - got 20+ last season, using it in the first round of fixtures

      2. Eze Really?

At least there can be 11 class players at GW 37 who can score heavy even if rested. 15 DGW players I can guess 4 will get rested anyway.

I'm going 37 because I plan to more or less ignore gw34, with just Ibra and maybe Valencia and Zaha (who have form anyway regardless).

I do like your reasoning though and in particular a streamlined gw37 squad appeals to me. My TV is ok but not great so I'm concerned about trying to put together a squad of 15 un-rotatable players without missing out on big hitters. Would be nice to have the best 11 for dgw37 and go budget on the bench.

Thanks for the feedback Dr., it's hard to predict but rotation is rife around 37 so picking 15 starters will be challenging.

Definitely, I think the only way to be even relatively certain is to spread TV very wide and take key players from a variety of teams, especially those with relegation/top 4 scraps ongoing.

I'm going to roll those dice anyway and take the risk of being burned by players I want rather than be emotionally invested in Palace players V Spurs or Boro players V literally anyone. Best of luck Bunk, hope it pays off for you!

Prefectly reasonable thinking. I always need to remind myself that BB is only an extra keeper, 2 defs and an attacker.

34 vs 37 debate is really about the quality of the games presented. Boro/Palace/Utd games vs the ones in 37. I do think 37 got more rotation risks than 34.

      1. Bunk Moreland
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

        Thanks.

I guess that is the essence: Fixtures are bound to be better in 37, however rotation is more prevalent. If you, like me, are likely to bench players with good fixtures in 34, it may be just as profitable to BB then while allowing me to keep the WC for a streamlined 37.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 14 Years
          7 years, 1 month ago

I don't have a problem with that approach. I lookat BB with the eyes of someone who wants 16+ extra points. If you think you can get that with whatever squad you have in whatever week then you can use it.

Yep true. Lets face it, the 4 extra players to BB are the cheap/fodder ones anyway unless you have a monster tv be it in 34 or 37.

A reasonably good BB in 34 + streamlined team for 37 could turn out better.

Its a very viable strategy that I'm considering too, although I'm probably landing 70-30 in favour of the 37 bench boost at present. One thing to be aware of is that mourinho said today that if Man Utd drop points v Everton and Sunderland then he will rotate players in GW34.

      https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/apr/02/jose-mourinho-manchester-united-europa-league-premier-league

I think you make a good point though. If I go for bb in 34 I will most likely have something like:

      Valdes (bou, SUN), Pickford (mid)

Alonso (SOU), Valencia (bur, mci), PVA if fit (liv, TOT), Maguire (WAT), Gibson (bou, SUN)

Sanchez (LEI), Alli (pal), Zaha (liv, TOT), Sigurdsson (STO), Sterling (MNU)

Lukaku (whm), Vardy (ars), Llorente (STO)

"Then, it’s possible that you see me play in the Premier League with a team where I’m going to protect the players that I consider fundamental for the Europa League. But only, only if the results in the next matches put us in a situation where mathematically, it becomes almost impossible to do it"

That´s the important part of his message. The probability of that to happen before gameweek 34 is tiny, but could very well be something we have to be aware of when we plan gameweek 37. And that is only one team, Chelsea could have already won it, spots for CL could very wel be decided and so on

I must say that Bunk Moreland article is spot on! Cheers for enlightening us and for your timely analyse, Bunk!

I think it all depends what your mind set is and there are many ways to play the game.

But in my view, the whole point to a GW37 BB is that you don't care about your your team being unbalanced for the future (this year it is much easier to plan for without a WC because so many top teams have doubles in 37)

In that respect the plan is to get good nailed players from good teams with good fixtures so your bench hopefully will have good DGW players that play 2 games (maybe a SG player like Sunderland v Swansea if either are chasing survival), you spread the TV a bit and not worry about wasted value on the bench because there is just one week to go.

I really don't want Valdes Sakho Gibson Zaha after GW34, have never owned them so far and would not really consider owning them in the future and don't want to be taking hits or using free transfers to get them out.

I still carry the scars from using Bench Boost in gw34 last season! Messrs Klopp, Benitez and van Gaal did their utmost to deprive me of pointage. I think I'll keep it til gw37 this time around.

Really interesting thought. It's not either-or though. If you have a wildcard left you could still fill up on (as near as you can safely predict) guaranteed starters by going for a GW 37 team almost entirely made up of teams who have something to play for, and then try and hope that this team is still good for 38, which is a lottery anyway.

      For example:

      Strong teams

Arsenal will be battling to the end. Sanchez will almost certainly play 37x2 and 38
Man City should still have everything to play for and you have a load of options there

      OK teams

Spurs - confirming CL participation; maybe challenging for the title

      Risky teams:

Chelsea (if they have won the title by then or are likely to have won in one of the three 37/38 fixtures)
Man United (depending on Europa league progress)

      Very risky teams
Leicester - on the beach league-wise
West Brom - on the beach
Sunderland - will probably be relegated by then
      Southampton - on the beach

So you could have a team including

      Arsenal defender (Bellerin?)
      City Defender (Stones?)
      Eriksen
      Alli
      Kane
      Sanchez
      Sterling/Sané
      Jesus/Aguero

And be fairly confident that all will play. If any of the risky teams have a wobble or a strong run-in they could come into contention too. So GW37 BB is very viable as an option without too much risk.

It's something to look out for. Not many other teams will still be battling by that point. This can result in some big scores also, with teams like Bournemouth, West Ham, Burnley or the likes having nothing at all to play for.

Your justification for having Chelsea a risky team also means spurs will likely be risky as they should be safe enough for champions league and no longer challenging.

GW34 BB was appealing until Watford lost a DGW, while City ended up playing Manchester United instead of WBA. Essentially Chelsea(SOU instead of WAT), City(UTD instead of WBA), WBA(No fixture instead of MCI), United(mci instead of sou), Southampton(che instead of UTD) and Watford(no fixture instead of che DGW) got much worse fixtures for GW34 just because the Manchester derby was put into that GW.

WC should be played in GW36 in my opinion, so that you can either get in Arsenal and Southampton players for their DGW36, or get rid of them after their DGW35. Arsenal will either have a terrible GW35(tot) or GW36(UTD). Southampton will have a bad GW36(liv) if they don't have a DGW.

Man Utd(ars), Middlesbrough(che) and Crystal Palace(mci) also have bad fixtures in GW36, so it's the perfect GW to refresh your squad. If the optimal time to WC is in GW36, then why not just BB in GW37 anyway?

Great debate and something I've been considering. One factor not mentioned is the TC chip. For those of us holding TC, none of the GW34 doubles look too appealing, and Arsenal and Southamptons doubles look risky too. However there are likely to be tasty options for Alexis and Aguero / Jesus in 37. For those sitting on the fence at the moment this issue should also come into your consideration

I've argued at length as to the merits of an early bench boost. Especially if Arsenal/Saints are in Gameweek 35. You make some good points but I'll add my two main ones barely covered here.

Firstly I have my triple left, and the fixtures in 37 are miles better. A triple Kane or Hazard if fighting for title could be enormous.

Secondly, planning for 11 double headers not 15 on a 36 wildcard means I can essentially have the dirtiest bench imaginable to max out on the best 11 with doubles. Many looking to play all 15 will spread the cash around more.

Good input Hindu Monkey, I didn't think about the TC chip as I've already played it. The 2nd point is key to me though, there is room for an improvement in the first 11 if you can add lets say 2 4,0 defenders and a playing midfield fodder (just in case) rather than aiming for someone that will give you good points in 37, potentially at the cost of sacrificing a heavy hitter.

You're never guaranteed a player plays in a game. Not in GW1, 17 or 37. So why not maximise your chances of getting an extra game out of all 15 instead of just 9 at most? Careful planning combined with paying attention and you'll be fine.

I used mine in 37 last time and was fine. Two Liverpool players only playing one game didn't hurt when I got 193 total.

That's an incredible score, you must have planned well in addition to having all the planets align for you.

Did you need to take hits in 37 last year, or did all your gw36 players make it through? It's perhaps difficult to remember.

Difficult to remember. But I'm generally quite hit happy. I think I had one transfer planned from 36 to 37, someone with a good 36 fixture but no double.

And yes, the planets aligned - two double figures scored from two goalkeepers (including Gomes saving two penalties). So maybe Rose my good fortune more than most.

Regarding the DGW34 vs DGW37 levels of rotation you may be remembering this hot topic: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/12856431

The secondary analysis part way down the discussion is probably the most useful: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/12857864

Long story short, rotation generally is greater in DGW37, although if you can target those players with something left to play for in DGW37 you can mitigate the risk. Teams with nothing left to play for are not to be trusted to provide good DGW options though.

Cheers Greenwindmill. Getting 11 players from teams still fighting for something with a DGW will be easier than getting 15 of them. But it might be possible, I know it worked out for a few last season.

Just to keep question simple which is better option over next two weeks (wildcard kept for gw35/36)

    (i) Mane to Walcott this week and swap Walcott (WHM) to Sane (HUL) next week. No hits
(ii) Mane and (downgrade Alonso or Aguero to fund it) to Sanchez for -4 (WHM then cpl).

I'm leaning towards (i) as no hit and don't have to lose players with good fixtures next week.

    Few things

Heaton vs Jaku - Stoke are dangerous, Boro not really, so playing Jaku makes sense, but Heaton save points and potential bonus means I think he has a higher cieling. What do we think? Currently Jaku.

Baines - Keeping faith, prob on Pens (have Lukaku also), can always get an assist, great fixtures after this. Just worried about CS with the youngsters playing but Schneiderlin return will help them defensively.

Finally, No Liv players at home to Bournemouth, and Coutinho has 'that' feel again. Worth a hit anywhere?

    San(c)hez Sane Siggy Alli King
    Aguero Lukaku

    Cheers
