Jamie Vardy’s second-half goal is too little, too late as a spirited Leicester City finally exit the Champions League.

Leicester City 1 Atletico Madrid 1 (Aggregate 1-2)

And then there was one…the Premier League’s European aspirations now rest with Manchester United after Leicester could only draw the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with a savvy, if at times rocky, Atletico Madrid.

Jamie Vardy’s second-half equaliser provided a measure of hope as the Foxes, easily subdued in the first half, went back to basics after the break and caused a measure of discomfort to the visitors’ backline.

The difference between the sides, in the end, was quality – Atletico controlled large parts of the tie and took the occasional chances that came their way. Leicester were second-best until all that was left was to give it a go. That they did, with impetus gained by a switch to 3-5-2 after half-time, and the Spaniards bent but never broke under the less than subtle onslaught.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare made one change from the first leg. Robert Huth was suspended, so the fit-again Wes Morgan, back after missing five league matches with a back issue, partnered Yohan Benalouane in the centre of the defence.

The Leicester captain’s return should have been welcome news for the 10.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with him in their squads – only Vardy (14.8%) is owned by more.

But Morgan never looked match-fit and succumbed to a hamstring problem in the second half that threatens to put him straight back on the injured list again.

As for Vardy, he remains the talisman of a team reborn under Shakespeare but still lacking consistent returns from Riyad Mahrez.

The Algerian has managed two goals and an assist in the seven league matches since Claudio Ranieri was sacked. Vardy has scored six times and provided three assists over the same period.

That form makes the England striker almost undroppable, although the Foxes’ run-in is a decidedly mixed bag.

They face West Brom, Watford and Bournemouth and have a double Gameweek 37. But that involves Man City away and the visit of a rampant Spurs, while their next match is a trip to an Arsenal side scrapping to keep themselves in the hunt for the Champions League places.

The worry is that, as their place in the Premier League looks safe enough, there will be precious little for the defending champions to play for now their European campaign is finally over.

Shakespeare will know that a strong finish would do wonders for his own ambitions to lead the club on a more permanent basis. Whether that is motivation enough for the players remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Vardy remains the only Leicester asset worthy of consideration but, given the current clamour for the likes of Harry Kane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Benteke, he has become a casualty of heavy sales.

Vardy lost over 86,000 owners over his past two Gameweeks and has suffered a deficit of 17,000 so far ahead of the weekend deadline.

Team: Schmeichel; Simpson, Benalouane (Chilwell 45), Morgan (Amartey 84) , Fuchs; Mahrez, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Albrighton; Okazaki (Ulloa 45), Vardy.
Subs not used: Zieler, Musa, King, Amartey, Gray.

Bit of help here please, 2FT. Really am undecided of what to do. I plan on using WC after this GW or GW36, looks like i will be left with a benching headache if I were to bring 2 more DGW players in this GW

    Pickford
    VALENCIA Alonso FRIEND
    Eriksen Alli King ZAHA
    Aguero Lukaku Kane

    Which is better?

With WC, TC + BB left it seems like they'll all fall in order back to back GWs during 35/36/37, however WCing in 34 ready for BB in 37 seems quite far away. Anyone else worried about this?

    36=Sanchez TC

Would it be better to use WC to re-jig team for final GW38 perhaps as an alternative?

One addition fpl should definitely make next season is the 'infiltration chip' to replace the AoA.

Basically you get to pick the captain of one your mini league rivals once in the season. the victim can only br infiltrated once.

I'm seriously thinking Ibra could hurt many owners. Should start on Thursday and possibly be benched for Burnley, meaning he's only got City away and a cameo from the first of the DGW games. This scenario being very likely, I can't possibly justify selling the league's top scorer for him, let alone for a hit.

Where are Boro at ahead of the DGW?

I've had a request to update you all with the state of play at the Boro ahead of the forthcoming DGW. The general opinion since December has been to stay away from our assets, so it's fun to have a bit of interest again....for a GW at least!

Since the departure of Karanka, we've seen a more spirited and together Boro with a far wider range of attacking styles, well, more than the ONE style we played with for the past three years (we now cross the ball for example!). The problem is we are suffering still from a lack of confidence and are hampered by the fact we have forgotten how to win. In addition, our defensive injuries have been a blow at a time when a strong backline and a more attacking formation could have helped pick up a few extra points.

Anyway, we are where we are: let's have some good news:

We are a threat in the final third. We have been going to two upfront in most games, not necesarily starting, but in every game at some point we have had two strikers on the pitch (people may think it's odd that I would point this out as surely thats normal. It hasn't been normal for three years up here!) and going a bit more direct. We have been weaker at the back, but that has been as much to do with injuries as anything else, losing Fabio, Friend and Chambers has really cost us.

The fixtures. As far as picking a home and away game for a DGW, Bournemouth and Sunderland are on paper, friendly at least.

Chambers is back - Fully fit but unavailable for selection against Arsenal. He will come in for either Barragan or Ayala, depending which Agnew decides is the worst. The answer is of course Barragan, but we will see. At least Ayala is a threat in the box. The fact is Chambers is our best right sided CB and arguably our best RB, although Fabio has been excellent (see further down). Whatever happens he will start.

Gibson. Nailed, been excellent all season.

Downing. Played pretty much every minute since Agnew was appointed. Make no mistake the legs have gone, but his crossing abaility is slowly coming back. Bear in mind, he wasn't allowed to cross under Karanka, so its been a long two years for the lad in that respect. Great ball in for Negredo's goal the other night and you can see that sharpness returning.

Ramirez - the good news is he is back on the pitch. The bad news is he didn't look sharp. If we survive, he will have had an impact. Sadly, I'd leave alone.

Negredo - Confidence is returning and wants to stay in England. Working hard, nailed on to start.

      The Bad news

We are completely shot of confidence. I genuinely believe that one win, will lead to two, but until we got the first we can't get the second. We were unfortunate against Hull in that we had a patched up defence, because we attacked well. But when we went on nil up we folded, only to play well again at 2-1 down.

Fabio and Valdes injuries - We don't know the extent yet, find out on Thursday I guess. But both of these players are vital. Just as Chambers is fit, to lose these two would be a big blow. Fingers crossed. Friend was awful the other night when he came on. He's just back from injury so let's be kind and call it rust. Fabio is our best RB and our best LB.

If Fabio is fit, I would expect: Fabio, Chambers, Gibson, Friend. Barragan is an absolute joke of a footballer.

Traore - reduced to a cameo, impact role. Not sure if that's bad news, or good news. But if you have him or considering him, bear that in mind.

Leadbitter/De Roon/Forshaw/ Clayton. Really?? Under no circumstances would I bring any of those in for a hit, or bring in to take out for a hit. I keep seeing De Roon's name bandied about, an enabler no doubt. But a hit? No chance.

In summary: Look out for Gibson, Chambers, Fabio&Valdes injury updates, Negredo and Downing for a nice differential. Ignore the rest unless De Roon provides an enabling opportunity.

Feeling punt? if we need a goal we are chucking it in the box towards the end of games and Gestede keeps coming on. Scored against United and he will get a couple more before the season's out. Always a threat in the air and MAY start against Sunderland in a two.

It's the safer option for sure, however when Gestede has been coming on we've been going direct and he's always a threat, so it may end up burning you. I think there's also chance Gestede may also start in a two against Sunderland. Against Gestede is the Bamford factor who looked as sharp as I'd seen him since his last spell when he came on against Burnley. Depends how the game is looking whether we bring on Gestede or Bamford I think.

Much of a muchness, I think when they've played together very little has seperated them. They're both nailed and Gibson is less prone to an injury. It may come down to price.

He has been due to the injuries. Hull away was the worst right back performance I've ever seen, and the Ozil goal the other night he was atrocious. It's Fabio/Chambers/Barragan for RB, Friend/Fabio for LB, Chambers/Ayala/Espinosa for RCB, so all these injuries have confused the situation. A Fabio injury could also mean he plays, if Chambers is preferred at CB. Difficult to really know for certain as the new manager hasn't had everybody fit.

If I had him, then I'd play him over Siggy. It's just a gamble if you are bringing him in for a hit. He's a neat and tidy holding midfielder being asked to play offensively, he's improving at it but he's not a natural. He's not exactly prolific but nothing would please me more than him scoring!

All of those guys are far more likely to get a goal in one game than De Roon is in two games IMO. The bonus I guess being that De Roon should be guaranteed at least 4 points.

Friend looked decent (for a Boro player) after such a long spell out. Should have had an assist if Ayala could finish from 5 meters.

Also noticed that he completed a couple of succesful take-ons.

It would help me a lot if you do a quick run down of projected lineups on Friday! I know that's a lot to ask and FFS already has the team news section but it'd be good to hear your guess particularly concerning their defence.

Wait for news on Fabio, but if he's fit the defence should be:

            Fabio Chambers Gibson Friend

If he's injured, it will be between Barragan or Ayala with Chambers either playing RB or CB depending on the selection. I suspect Barragan will be dropped for Chambers at RB. Ayala has been getting sharper, depite clearly struggling against pace.

Agnew has played about with formations, so it's anyone's guess. If I were to predict it I'd say we'd play 4-3-3 against Bournemouth and 4-4-2 at home to Sunderland.

            Leadbitter Clayton De Roon
            Downing Negredo Ramirez

            Downing Clayton De Roon Ramirez
            Negredo Gestede

He has pulled a few selection shocks out though, that's just my prediction.

I'm hoping Valdes injury isn't serious - we'll find out later today. If he's out then Guzan will start.

Thanks for this - Chambers being an option again is great - not sure I can stretch to Gibson

Nicely written write up that manages to be informative and humouress at the same time. I am captaining Negredo given his recent form, improved in the box stats and more importantly, his fixtures.

          Thanks great post, appreciated.
How is Negredo nailed though when he was benched the last time you had 2 games in a week?
Also you say Chambers nailed but again 2 games in a week when he's been out for so long seems risky

Good question. Negredo has scored in his last two starts, which is great. He was 'rested' at home to Burnley in between those two starts when we switched to 3-5-2 and inexplicably started Christhian Stuani upfront. We failed to score in that game and Stuani was hauled off at the hour for Negredo and I just cannot see Agnew doing that again. In the event that Negredo doesn't start one of these games and we fail to score again then huge questions will be asked, especially with him starting to look a lot sharper. It's not worth it IMO.

Possibly risky yes, however him and Gibson have been so impressive for us this season that at this stage we need to be putting out our best players. This is Chambers' third full week of training and was fit for the Arsenal game, so in his favour at least he, although may lack match sharpness, it's not like he's just started training again this week.

Would you risk playing Barrgan or go with Ben Davies? Appreciate your help mate

I hope Barragan doesn't start either game, and I'd be very, very surprised if he does given the fact Chambers is back. I can't tell you how bad he's been over the past three months!

On the flip side, I think Palace will score so I'd probably play the odds and start Barragan with Davies first sub!

FWIW guys, I have Fabio so I'm waiting on news. If he's fit then great for me, I've convinced myself that Negredo is a gamble worth taking. If he's not I think I'll bring Gibson in and possibly still make the Negredo move for -4.

I'm also trying to remain optimistic on Fabio, as you may have noticed, that's becasue I own him and he's been one of our best players since signing....but it doesn't sound great 🙁

Got Valdes so hope he pulls through, though I am not optimistic. Also got de Roon in as an enabler
but will play AOA and hope he can nick an assist or a goal. He's got a few lately so he does have an outside chance. Playing him over Holgate away to the hammers. Thanks for the post pal.

Your posts have helped me a few times this season. A couple of times I even came on here trying to find you to ask questions re: Boro. Always appreciated!

Thanks for that mate, nice to hear. I've got my fingers crossed I'll still be able to offer something next year! Hinges on turning our season around in the next two.

          Injury Update.

Think it is already on the site, but I thought it might be useful to add it to here:

Fabio - 'It's good news and it's not as bad as first thought.' He'll be assessed tomorrow to see if he can make Saturday, but it sounds positive for the midweek game

Valdes - Ribs are sore and he will miss the game. No comment about midweek.

Leadbitter - Hamstring, will miss out. If you have Grant then you must really be struggling!

Gestede - kick on the heel but trained this morning. Should be fine.

            Thanks for the updates UTB!

With the Fabio update do you reckon it will be:

            Fabio Chambers Gibson Friend

            for the game on Saturday?

Also, just wondering if you have any source for team lineups before the deadline for Saturday as it might be of great help to get someone who is going to start the first game of the DGW.

Heaton, Sanchez, McAuley & Llorente > DDG, Zaha, Gibson & Ibra - 8?

        Leaves:

        DDG*
        Davies, Valencia*, Gibson*
        Alli, Zaha*, Sigurdsson, de Roon*,
        Kane, Ibrahimovic*, Lukaku
        Bench: Grant, Alonso, Lanzini, Amat

        How's it look?

My nearest rival (29 points) has Inbra, Gibson Valencia and Zaha but ATM not DDG. He still has TC and Sanchez but guess he will use on Ibra if he's going to TC this week.

it does not look like it on fplstatistics, slightly downwards according to them.
