The Numbers Game – Arsenal

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, gets underway this evening.

Starting with Arsenal, we’ll look at the performance levels of each team and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new campaign.

In certain cases, we also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in the Gunners’ case, this involves a switch in formation to a 3-4-2-1 in the latter stages of the campaign.

Runners-up to Leicester City on 71 points in 2015/16, the Gunners chalked up 75 points this time around but could only muster a fifth place finish.

Although Arsene Wenger’s side also found the net more often (up from 65 goals to 77), their underlying numbers reveal an overall decline in performance.

Folks, I haven't been on here in ages, but thought you might be interested in the metrics for all-time FPL manager performance I've put up on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/i/moments/874228521903603712

Let me emphasise I am not trying to supplant the FFS hall of fame - just wanted to look at all-time performance a few different ways. Something to discuss during the long off-season....

              Heh-heh. 😀

I took a look at the link. Would you say the HOF algorithm is inherently flawed or needs to be tweaked?

No. I like HoF. But I do think discounting at 20% per season tells you more about form than all-time performance.

Where would Jonty be in your system?

Your point about discounting at 20% this season seems to ring true with him ... he seems to have been treated unfairly with the HOF rank this season. A huge drop despite all those top 5K finishes in years gone by.

Jonty is 233rd on Geometric Mean Rank and 93rd on m-index.

Agree. The way HoF treated Ville Ronka and Utkarsh Dalmia at the end of this season was part of the motiviation to look at other measures.

Interesting. Does it include all managers or just the managers who've joined the hof? Wonder how managers rank if you just rank by average points per season (minimum of 4 seasons).

It includes the HoF top 10k plus the first 100k IDs in the 2016/17 season. I've had a few requests on Twitter to add people, which I will do in the next day or so.

Average points would look fairly similar to the Geometric Mean Rank metric in terms of manager ranking.

It's tough on managers that have played fewer than 11 seasons, but there's a place for rewarding quantity, not just quality.

Aguero has better scoring rate than Henry, but Henry has more goals. Who's the greatest?

I earlier expressed my doubt about Pepe set for a transfer to PSG rumour. As states it now as done deal: 2 years at PSG.

    http://futbol.as.com/futbol/2017/06/13/primera/1497313614_814949.html

Well, some Spanish media or another seems to launch this once every month, always "a done deal", every month, and yet never confirmed from the other side. Now this comes from two sources, it seems: Spaletti, at Inter, turned Pepe down, and Capello, at "any club in China", says Pepe turned them down for PSG. If that indeed is the case, then it really suggests that Pepe does have a contract offer by PSG on table.

Still waiting a single confirming word from the other side of the deal.

Also, Telegraph says that Arsenal is looking to sign Lacazette, and the price is €55M + €12M in add-ons. I say, take it. For a proven top forward still to reach his peak age, at the current markets that's a bargain.

I wouldn't say he's proven because he's only played in the pub league that is France. And not even for one of the top teams. France have a few decent teams and the rest are meh.

He could do well however, but there is definitely a risk he may not perform at the highest level and that is reflected in his price tag.

That is perfectly fine, but sometimes you may not realise that your card is missing until a few hours later. And it maybe too late by then.

In this case, the info required for buying the membership here was all printed on my card. So some one who has photographed my card, or is good at remembering numbers could have bought a FFS membership (worth more than 1000 bucks in my currency) without me even knowing.

The bank will simply refund any fraudulent transactions if you notify them. Obviously if you don't keep track of it it could cost you a bit, but if they empty your bank account overnight the bank will notify you/freeze the card

    SKY BREAKING NEWS

Everton have agreed a fee totalling £30m with Sunderland for goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The Merseysiders had an opening bid knocked back last week, but have come back in with another which relegated Sunderland have accepted.

We understand the £30m will include a number of add-ons over the course of a long-term contract.

Pickford is currently on international duty in Poland with England U21s and will undergo a medical upon his return.

True. They may be structuring it in a way that minimises the downside risk. I also realise this is just the market we're operating in these days but I remain something of a Pickford skeptic in that I think it's very difficult to judge goalkeepers playing for teams that are basically cannon fodder. Didn't David Marshall get considerably hyped up during Cardiff's season in the PL?

Me too. He has only ever played for a team that is designed to make the GK look good. He could be completely mediocre in a bigger club.

But, he is probably the best English GK of his age, or the most proven at least, and at the current markets thats the price a PL club pays for that.

I think so, yes. Crazy money too. Maybe even crazier, since Pickford has the homegrown value.

The prices are inflated and he's English - a playable English player is an asset for PL clubs.

Wasn't Rio Ferdinand to United around £30 million in 2002 ?? Eventually proved to be worth the price IMO

If Pickford goes on to have a successful years ahead, the fee will be forgotten

Do you think Coutinho and Mane will have the same price tag this season (maybe 9.5m)?

    1. Camp No No

      Both nailed on.

      Cout ppg 5.5
      Mané ppg 5.8

KDB was priced at 10.5 after one season with 5.2 ppg. So, I'd say Cout 11.0, Mané 11.5. That 5.8 ppg is Aguero-like.

Just can't go under 10.5. No way. Nobody scoring that high points for a very attacking top-4 club will be priced that low. He'll probably be Liverpool's highest priced player anyway.

No chance they're that expensive, is there? I think you could be overrestimating the prominence of ppm as a factor of initial prices 🙂

The pricing should be based on expectable points, shouldn't it?

There's no reason to beige that Coutinho and Mané are becoming any worse at this age, nor that Klopp's Pool was becoming any worse. Rather the opposite, expected to do better next season.

10 and 10.5 would be justified, but I'd say Mané in particular would still be of very good value.

Agree with expected points. As well as that however, I don't see them reaching 11.0 when so many big hitters are facing price hikes. FPL have to keep the game manageable remember. 10.0, maybe 10.5 is the max I see for either of them. We'll see.

Impressive numbers, but anything above 10.5m would be crazy imo. Alli and Eriksen have averaged about 6.0 ppg and I would be surprised if they cost more than 9.5m or 10m this season.

I'd be surprised if they'd cost anything below 11.0 this season. Why would they, exactly? People seem to be fixated to think that Spurs and Liverpool are not top-4 clubs. They are now. They score a fecking a lot of goals. That's why we want those players, but that's also how they should and I'd say will be priced.

You're probably right. It just feels odd that someone else than Sanchez would be in that price bracket, but their numbers speak for themselves. I will make the game more challenging too. Can't fit 'em all in!

That's true. But that's how it should be. If they score like Sanchez and Hazard, but Hazard and Sanchez are priced 2m higher than them, it just doesn't work, they are too reachable, too good sources of points compared to investment. If they will be priced 10 or below next season, I will have all of them: Mané, Coutinho, All and Eriksen.

Sanchez must be priced higher than others though. But there's no reason why he should be priced lower than Kun, for example. Put those fellows both at 12.0, Kane at 13.0, Hazard, Lukaku, Mane, Alli and Eriksen at 11.0, and Coutinho, Jesus and KDB at 10.5, and you've got the top of the list solved.

        3. Camp No No

The season before, both Eriksen & Alli already scored about 5ppg, numbers that got KDB priced at 10.5. Now they confirmed, with 6.1 ppg, numbers to which Aguero doesn't get year-to-year basis. Spurs finished above City in the league and scored more goals They already had CL last season too, so that isn't changing. Pricing them below 11 would be completely unjustified and pricing below 10 would be insane.

Are there any players you are set to have in your GW1 team regardless of price?

For me it is Kane and Mane. Also liking the look of Stanislas with his 1 in 5 goal return at Bournemouth.

Absolutely none - makes no sense to think like that I don't believe. I'll be looking at price, fixtures, pre-season and any other relevant circumstances. This has to be the right way to do things, I'm just not very good at making an assessment based on those factors!
