Team Of The Season – Romelu Lukaku

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku was always expected to build on a career-best 185 points from the 2015/16 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season.

The Belgian duly obliged, registering 25 goals and six assists to total 221 points which ranked him second among FPL forwards.

He was undoubtedly one of the season’s stars, with Lukaku’s performances earning his first-ever selection in the PFA Team of the Year, while he also takes his place alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane as the second forward in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

Despite his strong showing in 2015/16, Lukaku was only handed a starting price of 9.0 in FPL.

After missing the first match of the season against Spurs due to a foot injury, Lukaku then suffered two successive blanks as his campaign stalled.

But he scored twice for Belgium in a 3-0 win over Cyprus during the international break and then produced a breathtaking 11-minute hat-trick against Sunderland in Gameweek 4.

That was followed by a further four goals and three assists over his next six appearances as his value rocketed to 9.9, with the striker found in 1,476,014 squads by Gameweek 12.

A tougher run of fixtures then slowed his ascent, with Lukaku suffering six blanks in seven Gameweeks, ensuring that his price fell back to 9.4.

But an 11-point haul in a 3-0 home win over Southampton would kick start an incredible run of form at Goodison Park which would define Lukaku’s season.

He went on to score in each of his next seven home matches, registering 12 goals, two assists and 12 bonus points. He also produced four double-digit hauls, including a momentous 21 points in the 6-3 win against Bournemouth in Gameweek 24 when he scored four goals.

His price in FPL peaked at 10.5 during this period, with the Belgian now found in over 2,100,000 squads – making him the most popular FPL asset.

Lukaku’s form tailed off towards the end of the season, but he did score a penalty in the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on the final day.

In terms of his underlying statistics, he ranked fourth among FPL forwards for goal attempts with 110, and joint-fourth for shots from inside the box with 80.

The Toffees striker was very accurate during 2016/17 though, registering 53 shots on target – only Kane (58) produced more.

Lukaku also shone as a creator, registering 47 key passes, placing him joint-first among FPL forwards.

The excellent value he offered throughout the season was reflected in the Belgian ranking third for points per million for forwards with a score of 21.9.

He also excelled in terms of bonus points, racking up 33 – a tally matched only by Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and his Golden Boot rival Kane.

The Prospects

Following such a prolific campaign, there is no doubt that Lukaku will earn a significant price hike next season.

However, with the striker having reportedly reached an agreement with another club – with Chelsea and Manchester United appearing to be leading the chase – the scale of that increase is still uncertain.

If he does end up at either Stamford Bridge or Old Trafford, that will surely confirm his status as one of the most expensive players in the game, perhaps placing him around the 11.5 mark.

Such a move throws up numerous permutations that make assessing Lukaku’s prospects for next season very difficult.

How much competition he has will be a factor, given that he started 36 matches last season and was guaranteed a place in Everton’s first XI when fit.

Diego Costa’s uncertain future at Chelsea would suggeset that a move for Lukaku will suit both parties and the latest reports suggest that the Blues are now favourites to seal his capture.

But while he would be expected to command a starting berth at either Chelsea or United, the fact both teams will play in the Champions League next season means he will be more vulnerable.

On the other hand, the prospects for the Belgian could increase significantly with the benefit of an improved supply from midfield and the flanks.

Chelsea scored 85 goals and registered 580 goal attempts last season, compared to 62 and 502 respectively for Everton.

Meanwhile, United’s goal conversion rate of 9.1% was the fourth lowest in the top flight, indicating their need for a top quality striker.

With the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic still uncertain, the addition of Lukaku, who boasted a goal conversion rate of 22.7% last term – significantly stronger than Ibrahimovic (14.8) – could be crucial if Jose Mourinho’s side are to embark on a stronger campaign next time around.

However, United are also courting Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata with reports suggesting that he is bound for Old Trafford.

Regardless of his destination, Lukaku’s combination of pace, power and accurate finishing makes him a frightening prospect for opposition defences, and with the 24-year-old maturing year by year, he is set to challenge Kane and possibly Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero as the leading forward option next season.

Certainly, in terms of consistency and the potential to deliver big points hauls, he is currently the most likely challenger to that pair.

The next month will surely shape how we view Lukaku as a Fantasy prospect, with a move to a top six club perhaps inspiring him to reach yet another level in 2017/18.

Kane + Lukaku + Jesus looks pretty impossible, doesn't it...?

Probably. How much would you think Jesus will be though? He will be tough to price due to so little time and so great results last season. Maybe something like what Kane was for the season before? How much was that? Still probably too much to start with that three.

Good thing about Jesus is, if Sanchez joins, they'll have so many attacking options (Jesus, Aguero, Sanchez, KDB, Sane, B. Silva, etc) that the goals will be bound to be spread around. So he _could_ be expendable in that front 3.

Of course it's possible but I don't think it'll be worth it right from the start and the rest of your team will pay the price for that attacking trio. We'll talk when they reveal the prices.

Can someone explain to me what a draft league is? In small words please, my brain is tiny and delicate.

    1. versatile

Basically, you and your other league members, take it in turns to draft a squad together. Player by player. So each player is only active in one team in your league. Then there is something called the free agents - where players who weren't selected in the original draft are left over, for you to pick up in place of your other players etc. You can also trade with your fellow league combatants.

A player can be owned by only one team.

Eg: Kane. He can be drafted by only one team in a league, no other team can have him unless you make some kind of deal

Well. He will have to be fit. Don't forget we are certainly signing a striker. Class player, we will have to see if he fits in the jigsaw, on the left hand side.7.0 to 6.5. But you will be getting King.

            In a draft league.
He could be a good 4th mid at that price if I draft him late? He's under the radar afterall.
King in the other hand, will be probably be drafted earlier than he should be

Janmaat had a 4.5m price tag last season. Do you think he is a type of player Silva would use at wing back? Could be a decent pick if plays. That Watford squad need some new signings though.

Assuming Man Utd play a back four of Valencia, Lindelof, Bailly, ______,

then there could be a budget option into their backline. The big question is who will play there and how confident are they of selection

Darmian to start with. Lindelof could be £5.5m if he signs. Only 5 goals in 209 career appearances suggests he isn't much of a goal threat.

Thoughts on Lindelof mate? What kind of defender is he, ball playing type or no nonsense Vidic like?

Ball player but with the aerial prowess of Vidic.. only watched the guy a handful of times in the Euros and this season's CL but very composed type.. Jose will help improve him like he did Bailly and Rojo.. the fee is a drop in the ocean tbh.. think it will look a snip like Bailly

It's of course impossible to say that he will settle well and worth the money but...
Us Swedes should fit in well as we always work as a unit so should not be any problems to fit in with Mourinhos style.
He is good with his feet, actually has quite a good shot which he rarely gets to show.
Always very calm, cards are rare.
Good possitioning mlst times but it's here he sometimes can get in trouble so he and Bailly will need a bit of time to learn about each other.

Played for Sweden on u17, u19, u21(Euro champion, uefa team of tournament even though he played RB) level and of course with our big boys. Can play RB and DM but of course CB is his right place.
At his age and with his merits he is cheap as chips, had he been German or from Brazil price would have been at least 50% more imo.
Him and Emil Forsberg(RB Leipzig) are our(Swedens) shining lighgs these days.

As Nidge(I think) hinted the other day, there is something almost Vidicesque about him.
Not saying he is there yet, but the signs are there.
I just hope he gets the role to go up on corners, free kicks etc and that Bailly covers.
He has the tools to become a goalscoring defender let him use them.

To be fair, they also cleared Guy Roux years ago. The thing seems to be that the clause is not legally valid, so actually if the club insists on it, the signing will always be authorised. They probably knew this too.

    Imagine this situation:

Lukaku looks one of the best strikers for fpl.
His reasonable price at everton is something about 10.5
And if he moves to chelsea sth about 12 maybe
Imagine fpl gives him high chance to join chelsea and prices him 12
But finally he stays at everton
    Would you buy him?

I don't think they can price him according to speculated transfers. If he hasn't got the transfer when prices are revealed, then they just have to accept that the price him as an Everton player.

And also let us start with 4 Chelsea!

Maybe I'm crazing thinking starting without Kane?

    My arguments:

    - Kane has been a really slow starter the last seasons
    - With many team starting with him his price would rather go down than up
    - If Kane goes crazy I can use an early WC (as all of us)

Fair Enough but If he scores big you will be chasing shadows as he is likely to have very high ownership from the start

Agree to that is radioer to downgrade than upgrade, but not agree that the reward is small and the risk is big.

If you can spread 13 to upgrade elsewhere the reward could be big.

If the fixtures throw up some prime captaincy opportunities for Kane early doors and you aren't on board then prepare to be hurt badly.. likewise if you feel you have better options for the opening weeks then it may be wise to give him a miss initially.. it's all irrelevant until we see fixtures

I think half of the England senior team are very average. (Who wants to see Livermore in a England shirt?!)
I think think we should be ditching the average half and bring in the players who shone for the u20s plus a few u21/23s.
      Think about it....
      Heaton&Forster out, Pickford&Woodman in.
      Livermore out, Onomah in.
Defoe&Vardy out, CL & Solanke in.
It's not radical as they won't play alot, they'll just be in the squad. First team will still have the main core.
I don't see why we persevere with playing average late 20's/early 30's players. There is nothing to gain, and atleast this way, it's sink or swim for these youngsters, who are getting to an age where they should be tested/ given the opportunity to prove themselves.

Winning the U20 WC doesn't equate to anything really. It doesn't contain the best U20 players. Any U20 player who is particularly good will already be in the senior team.
