Premier League Fixtures Announced

The Premier League fixture list for 2017/18 was published at 9am today, granting us the opportunity to pencil in some likely targets for our initial squads.

Early analysis reveals that only two teams – Manchester United and Championship play-off winners Huddersfield Town – manage to avoid all of last season’s top six in the opening six Gameweeks.

Jose Mourinho’s men alternate home/away for those opening rounds, starting off with an Old Trafford visit from West Ham and a trip to Swansea City before facing up to Leicester City, Stoke City, Everton and Southampton.

Huddersfield, meanwhile, begin their season with a trip to Crystal Palace before back-to-back home encounters with Newcastle and Southampton. The Terriers also face West Ham, Leicester and Burnley in the opening six, suggesting they could play a part in our initial plans.

The new schedule has also been relatively kind to fellow promoted pair Newcastle (TOT, hud, WHU, swa, STO, bri) and Brighton (MCI, lei, wat, WBA, bou, NEW), who both face just one of last term’s top six for the first six matches.

Newcastle’s initial five road trips – Huddersfield, Swansea, Brighton, Southampton and Burnley – look promising, bearing in mind that they accumulated more points on the road than any side in last term’s Championship.

Although Brighton face a testing opening home encounter with Man City, nine of their following 10 at home (WBA, NEW, EVE, SOU, STO, CPL, BUR, WAT, BOU) also offer encouragement, with only a troublesome visit from Liverpool in that run. Chris Hughton’s side earned more points at home than any Championship outfit in 201617, with 12 of their 21 clean sheets arriving at the Amex.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ opening schedule suggests that many will be earmarking a place for Harry Kane from the get-go, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men squaring up to only one of last year’s top six in the first eight Gameweeks (new, CHE, BUR, eve, SWA, whu, hud, BOU).

But Man City have also been handed some kind-looking matches (bri, EVE, bou, LIV, wat, CPL) to kick off their campaign and their main attackers could also be quick off the mark.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Champions League play-off matches, which follow Gameweek 1 and 2 clashes with Watford and Palace, are worth bearing in mind – all the more so when you consider that they take on Arsenal and Man City in the subsequent two league fixtures.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s first five home matches – against Leicester, Bournemouth, West Brom, Brighton and Swansea – could promote early investment, particularly if Arsene Wenger looks to rotate for Europa League matches.

Similarly, Burnley and Swansea have some favourable opening fixtures in front of their own supporters.

The Clarets – who claimed 33 of 40 points at Turf Moor last term – welcome West Brom, Palace, Huddersfield, West Ham, Newcastle and Swansea in their first six at home. However, this is offset by an evil run of away matches (che, tot, liv, eve, mci) for Sean Dyche’s side that will, at the very least, keep Tom Heaton busy between the posts.

After hosting Man United in Gameweek 2, Paul Clement’s Swansea then welcome Newcastle, Watford, Huddersfield, Leicester, Brighton and Bournemouth for their subsequent six at the Liberty.

Looking at the tougher schedules, Everton and Leicester have been arguably handed the most testing opening runs across the first six Gameweeks, with both squaring up to four of last term’s top six.

From Gameweek 2-5, in particular, Ronald Koeman’s side look a no-go area, with trips to Man City, Chelsea and Man United in addition to a home clash with Spurs.

The Foxes travel to Arsenal and United and entertain Chelsea and Liverpool, although this is offset by encounters against newcomers Brighton and Huddersfield.

Finally, just a heads-up that the new fixture ticker for 2017/18 is now live on site – here’s a preview movie entailing the features involved.

Son Hueng Min has a 'suspected' broken arm during international duty. Will likely miss a portion of pre-season so might not be set and ready to go GW1/2

Pretty sure that was already set in stone last season and some games will be moved forwards/backwards from those dates due to TV and to ease in extra rest days.

GW34 and GW37 look key again, especially as GW34 won't also include blanks next season.

Now I wait for someone to post some nailed budget players or nailed players in generall (appart form Bellerin and few obvious one) as I'm not surie if all my team players will play 🙂

I guess I'll make a team and see how it goes. Haven't done any research yet on lineups, but I was already annoyed looking at Germany and thinking Weiser could be a defender playing wing back or winger, but he is classified as striker. 🙁

I've literally been playing with my team for hours doing lots of research. Seems a decent enough game for me. Shame there's no official UEFA game this time around though.

Patrick Shick from Czech is 4.5m striker. In qualifying, 9 games, 10 goals, 2 assists. In Serie A 30+ appearances, a goal or assist every 94 minutes this season. Seems a no-brainer pick as such an enabler. Tough group, but many of these teams haven't played together too much with squads changing a lot.

Yep, he's the one. Not a bench filler either with those numbers. So at 4.5, you just stick him in there, and with unlimited transfers between rounds there's no use for a decent bench, so should be fairly easy to get a great XI every round with Schick stuck in there.

Mainly anyone from Spain and Germany, really. For me the front three basically forms itself, and although I've got my favourites from those teams in midfield, there's plenty of options. There's a couple of players that are extremely overpriced given their massive reputation, although their Fantasy output are questionable, such as Saul Niguez and Renato Sanches.

Donnarumma too, 9m, compared to rest of Italy defence and other keepers. 2 points for winning a game is very important. Selke and Deulofeu alongside Schick is the template, but you can definitely make a case for one of those Serie A hitters, Bernardeschi or Berardi, shame that neither of them is a mid.

Exactly - not going near Donnarumma either. Yes, the points for winning a game thing is what stears me towards Spain and Germany, especially for the first set of matches as they face Macedonia and Czech Republic respectively. Italy, Portugal and Poland also great shouts for a win in GW1, but all their players are expensive, and even with Schick - we'll need some sort of balance.

Re the Italy guys I've avoided them completely as their goalscoring stats for the U21s actually are really poor. Berardi has scored 3 goals in 20 games, and Bernadeschi has the same amount of goals in 12 games. Compare that to Deulofeu's 16 goals in 32 games and Selke's 7 goals in 11 games and I find it hard to justify picking either one of the italians.

Other players that could offer great value:

Marcus Ingvartsen (DEN, 7.5m, for): Top goalscorer in the Danish Superliga this season with 23 goals, scored 8 goals in 7 U21-matches - all during the qualifiers. I'd like to have him in my team, but I find it hard to make room with Schick's immense value and the main men at Spain and Germany only a tad more expensive. Scored 6 goals in the last 4 qualifying matches. On penalties.

Lewis Baker (ENG, 7.5m, mid): Tied with Jermain Defoe for U21-goals and only one goal behind Harry Kane, his tally is at 7 goals in 13 matches for the Young Lions. Only one goal during qualifiers though, although I must admit I don't really know how many matches he played nor if he's actually nailed, but with RLC not travelling I would expect him to play in the #10 role.

Tammy Abraham (ENG, 6.5m, for): Great season in the Championship, but can he deliever as the Young Lions' main striker in a tournament like this? Has only played 4 matches for them, during which he has scored 2 goals. Not too shabby, but small sample size.

Adam Zrelak (SVK, 6.5m, for): 11 goals in 14 U21-matches, 5 goals during qualifiers. On penalties.

Kire Markoski (MAC, 6.0m, mid): 5 goals in 13 U21-matched, 4 of which came during qualifiers - top goalscorer of Macedonia's qualifying group. Scored in each of the last three qualifying matches - against Scotland (twice) and Northern Ireland.

I'm sure there's others aswell, but these are the one's who really caught my eye.

      1st draft:

      Pickford
      Bellerin - Conti - Targett
      Asensio - Arnold - Zivkovic - J. Carvalho
      Deulofeu - Cerri* - Schick

      4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0

      * could be Petagna if he looks the likely starter.

Unsure on Zivkovic and Carvalho. Who are the best midfield options?

Looking for some nailed budget options and some 7.0-7.5 nice mid. Also is JWP nailed or Baker better pick? Not sure about my def too.

        First draft is:

        Pickford, (4.0)
        Bellerin, Fonseca, Holzer (Stronati, Rasmussen)
        Asensio, Gnabry, Baker, Lipski, 7.5
        Deulofeu, Selke, Schick

You're wasting money with no fodder attacker. Cancelo has 90 games for Valencia and comes from national team so I would imagine he plays ahead of Fonseca. Cancelo could also play on the wing which would make him essential, but I don't know if we'll get that info in time.

as I dont know whose nailed I prefer to own playing one on the bench in case my first team player no show.
Fonseca played in all friendly I think and if Cancelo is on the wing than is Fonseca a sure none starter?

Big name players like him being called are sure to play, so depends if you want to risk it or not. Don't know much about these players, like could Fonseca play LB too, and I'm not sure if we will know before first game is played.

Subs can only come in for the same position (mid for mid works, but mid for fwd doesn't) so you're not covering too many players with an expensive sub.

maybe you're right. problem is that with so many unknowns it is really hard to pick a team. Like Baker in England. Is he nailed?

                Socond draft is:

                Pickford, (4.0)
                Bellerin, Targett, Conti, (Stronati, Rasmussen)
                Asensio, Gnabry, Baker, Lipski, (Sevcik)
                Deulofeu, Selke, Schick

It's a bit annoying yep, but I think it's worth the risk for now when we don't really know many enablers. It's also very likely that a player who looks nailed and is benched would come on as a sub, unless some last minute injury. Baker looks good, I assume the countdown on home page is to kick off so we'll be able to see England and Sweden lineups.

I'm trying to play safe week 1 and hoping all goes well. For example Germany have three full backs who have played around 10 matches in U21. Weiser RB, Gerhardt LB, Toljan RB/LB. One misses out and we probably don't know who for sure, so I'll get CB Stark week 1 and move on to full back week 2.

true, we will get first game line ups I think so maybe some budget options will come up and I will probably load up 3 Eng players for sure so Baker answer will come. Starting 4.5 defender would be really nice.

Are we convinced Lipski is nailed? I have him in my team, but now that Linetty has joined the U21s, will Dorna switch to a more defensive formation in the first game to avoid defeat? Just curious, because at 6.5m he might be value if he starts/
I don't know about Conti, but the rest of your team seems really strong. I opted for triple Germany attack:
                  Wrąbel
                  Cancelo Bellerin Gaya Bednarek
                  Lipski Gnabry(vc) Meyer
                  Selke Deulofeu Schick
I have no idea about Gaya's and Cancelo's certainty of starts. Picked them purely because I'm currently managing Valencia on my Football Manager save and they are absolutely killing it as my full-backs.

As you can see, I'm strongly backing 3 teams in GW1. 3 players from Poland, Germany and Spain each + Schick and Cancelo. I think that might be the way to go: if those 3 teams win their respective games, I would be looking at 18 extra points for those players being on the victorious side alone.

Lipski seems to be nailed for me. he played most if not all last games for U-21.I cant say no to that 6.5.m. 2pts for win a game is a factor for sure but getting playing XI is important too. Pickford is better pick that Wrąbel imo. Cancelo is really good choice but cant find that 0.5 extra. I will make some changes when I see a lineup of the first game. 3xSpa + 3xGer and maybe Italy plus some Poland players is the best team.

If it's true we get to see England and Sweden lineups before deadline that's great news, as I'm curious as to whom starts at RB and LB for ENG. Seen multiple sites suggesting Holgate-Chambers-Holding-Chilwell as the back four, which would be great given Holgate and Chilwell are both 5.5. If either or both start, I will pick them up and probably change Pickford to Wrabel myself. Can see a Poland win and clean sheet.

Probably Lipski will start on the bench.
                    Most possible Polish line-up:
Wrąbel - Kędziora, Bednarek, Jach, Jaroszyński - Kapustka, Dawidowicz, Linetty, Piątek, Frankowski - Stępiński

(Piątek [striker] will play as an AM/SS)

        Looks like templete.

I'm 3-4-3 with Targett and Conti plus Baker in midfield instead of Cancelo Stark Bednarek.
I will wait for line ups of first game and make some changes for sure like switching Targett for ant 5.5 Eng def if possible and maybe upgrade Baker/Lipski for some premium mid.

Any tip for other than Schick nailed budget player would be nice.

Swedish paper Expressen predicting based on training sessions: Cajtoft – Wahlqvist, Une-Larsson, Dagerstål, Lundqvist - Tibbling, Olsson, Hallberg, Fransson – Engvall, Cibicki.

Cheapest player is defender Dagerstål at 5.5m. Unfortunately looks like cheaper midfielders Mrabti, Asoro and Eliasson are not expected to start.

German Kicker reporting that Meyer missed a training session with a cold, but is expected to be fit. Meanwhile Stark is struggling with a foot problem and it remains to be seen if he is able to play. With no bench he probably isn't worth the risk. Waiting on more info about other starters in that Germany defence and who is their goalkeeper.

      Predicted Polish line-up:
Wrąbel - Kędziora, Bednarek, Jach, Jaroszyński - Kapustka, Dawidowicz, Linetty, Piątek, Frankowski - Stępiński
The manager will go with a 4-5-1 formation, with 2 defensive midfielders. Jaroszynski and Jach seem to be decent defensive picks at 6.5.

Germany had a press conference today and Meyer was still out with a cold and is now a doubt. Stark looks better again and should be available. Coach said that decision on keeper will be made tonight so I'm hoping Kicker will have that information tomorrow.

Portugal's LB situation is interesting with two relatively cheap options competing. Rebocho 6.5m and Rodrigues 6m. Would like to have one, but if no info tomorrow then probably just get an England defender in after lineups.

Won't be tripling up on anyone until we've seen some form. But will likely double on an attacker and a defender from United.
Will probably avoid Liverpool and Spurs early on.

Arsenal: I fear Sanchez's price will be a minimum of 12m, so don't think that'll be doable if I want to have a balanced squad.

Chelsea: Pre-season should give us a clear indication whether Willian or Fabregas will be the second attacking midfielder behind Lukaku and alongside Pedro. Those two mids could be good value options.

Liverpool: Champions League qualification on their mind and tough fixtures for them in the first two Gameweeks. I know that sounds weird, but don't underestimate Silva's Watford and Benteke back at Anfield. So, I'm thinking Mané for GW3.

Man City: Jesus and KDB are IN!

Man United: Cheapest nailed on defender and Pogba or Mata.

Spurs: Trippier and Kane are IN! If the powerhouse striker starts off slow again, I can easily downgrade to another expensive big hitter. It's all about flexibility. 😉

West Ham's first home game of the season v Soton will have to be rescheduled due to athletics championship. Possible reversal of the fixture (so west ham play first 3 games away instead).

Spurs second home game of the season will also have to be rescheduled due to rugby challenge cup final at Wembley on the same day.

No worries 🙂 Yeah theres a few caveats with southampton; who will their manager be? Will VVD be back for the start of the season, or even at the club? If so, who plays out of Stephens, Yoshida and VVD at CB? Who starts out of Gabbiadini, Austin and Long? Hopefully there will be a few clues to the answer to these in pre season.

But purely based on fixtures, and the fact they aren't in europe this season, the start of the season looks good for them.

West Ham's can't be. In the article i linked it states that the World championships finish on the 13th August and it will take 15 days to get the stadium back for use by west ham. GW2 is the weekend of 19th August. Therefore West Ham can't play at home GW2. The only course of action available to them is to play away at Southampton instead, or have a blank fixture GW2, with a DGW further down the line.

Spurs situation is different with it just being a one off final, so you may well be right. However I don't think Spurs would want to play on Wembley turf a day after a rugby match haha!

Can I post this here, Mark? Obviously delete my post if you're trying to drive traffic to the Members' Area, np.

Here's a first draft of my Season Fixture Ticker. It's not the prettiest around, but it does the job.

1st tab - Defensive prospects by team.
2nd tab - Attacking prospects by team.
3rd tab - Team lookup detailing the attacking/defence strengths and weaknesses I have assigned for each team.

Feel free to make a copy and edit the lookup worksheet according to your perception of each team's strengths and weaknesses. For instance, you may think Spurs are a rock at the back both home and away, in which case you'd simply change the 4 value in Away - GA column to 5 for "TOT".

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_HyEgz0kvb2hSabue876sara-pvEXyH8D0j2dcdI7Ew/edit?usp=sharing

If you'd like more granularity in the shading between red and blue, then instead of rating teams out of 5, you can change this to 1-7 or 1-10 or any range you'd like even.

      Enjoy!

First, I think the new ticket is really fantastic.
      One tiny question/comment:

Am I the only one that would find rating colors (or...colours) easier to read/interpret if the continuum was:

      Dark Green (easiest)
      Light Green
      Yellow (moderate)
      Orange
      Red (most difficult)

"new feature" is very vague - could well just mean an extra feature to the app, rather than a fundamental change to the game. Mark will tell us all on here though in a minute, so don't worry 🙂

If we expect Kane to be 13m choosing a forward line could be trickier than ever this year. Aguero could easily still be first choice with Jesus out slightly wider at City. Morata/Lukaku will be 10m+ each, assuming they both move as expected. Also we are yet to see what Liverpool and Arsenal do RE buying new strikers.

442 was one of my best scoring formations last year, and I may have to start with it this year, filling up with wing backs. As Jonty pointed out previously, the promoted clubs don't offer much in the budget striker bracket, and players like Llorente are likely to be bumped in price.

352 could also work, but I feel like the number of wing backs might give 442 the edge if we don't have people like Sanchez, Firmino and King playing as strikers but listed as midfielders. 433 may well end up with a significantly weakened midfield/defence, or a 3rd striker from a poor set of options.

Alternatively, could go without Kane and rely on Alli/Eriksen... seems too risky though.

    1. The Tinkerman
      • 8 Years

Also bearing in mind Spurs don't have White Hart Lane anymore... could be a wobbly start for them at 'home'.

    2. Dreams
      • 7 Years

442 was a good formation for me too. Scored some decent points with that. Would depend on the reclassification as you said.

    3. Ser Davos
      • 8 Years

I'm leaning towards 4-4-2 too. Decent exposure to all positions, decent flexibility and just allows for better vfm. You're only sacrificing one attacker for a better side overall. Seems a sensible trade off to me.

      1. The Tinkerman
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Depends on the pricing of forwards tbh, but unless Brighton sign someone exciting to play up top, and they are priced below 6.5m, I think I'll be going 442 from the start. Don't like any of the other budget strikers. Defoe, Llorente, Benteke etc. all likely to be too expensive with a 13m Kane and ~10m+ Morata/Jesus/Lukaku.

Newcastle rotate too much up top, and Huddersfield don't score enough. Nothing else in the league already that I want as a third striker.

    4. *sigh*
      • 12 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Looking at 4-4-2 early doors but I do like a good cheap defender rotation. That Hud/Bri combo looks good with the early fixtures as does the SouBou.

      Something like

      Elliot/ Dalow
      Bailey/ Stephens/ A Smith/ Donk/ T Smith
      Sanchez/ Pogba/ Hazard/ Boufal/ Cook
      Kane/ Jesus/ Ayew

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Looks feasible. I'd sacrifice Ayew for a 4.5 fwd.

        1. *sigh*
          • 12 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

Gives me options for 3-4-3 though SR and I'm going to try hard not to use wild card early doors this time. Thought Ayew was unbelievable value last season and hoping for around 5.0 mark again. Obviously if the value is in wing backs when the prices come out then yes id go for a 4.5 forward with 4-4-2. Cant wait for 10th July.

You can't rely on Boufal to start games while Puel stays.

    5. The Tinkerman
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

I will probably start with 4-4-2 and a structure similar to this:

      4.5, 4.5
      6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.0
      11, 9.5, 7.5, 6.0, 4.5
      13, 10, 4.5

      1. The Tinkerman
        • 8 Years

Maybe with slightly less at the back and an extra premium mid in for the 9.5. Depending how wing backs are priced, and whether or not Sanchez sticks around.

How about Jay Rod if he moves from SOT, as the transfer betting odds seem to suggest? Could be listed as a mid still, possibly playing as a striker.

Dawson at 4.5 would be great

Rondon will be the first preseason bandwagon on here, we all know it.
