Scout Notes – Pre Season

Romelu Lukaku scores again as Man United’s impressive pre-season form continues, while fellow big ticket striker Alexandre Lacazette is on target in Arsenal’s loss to Sevilla.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth also suffer defeat, but give valuable pitch-time to their summer signings. Here are the notes from Sunday’s matches.

Valerenga 0 Manchester United 3

Romelu Lukaku notched his third goal of pre-season as Man United swept aside their Norwegian hosts with a swagger, much of which came from Paul Pogba.

Lukaku – with 47.9% ownership the most popular player in Fantasy Premier League – headed home an Andreas Pereira corner just after half-time as Jose Mourinho changed personnel and formations at the break.

One of the few to play more than 45 minutes was Pogba. His performance earned rave reviews and he was unlucky not to open the scoring when his shot hit the post.

That honour instead fell to Marouane Fellaini, his powerful header just before the interval coming from a Henrikh Mkhitaryan cross.

United youngster Scott McTominay rounded off the scoring, with the assist coming from Anthony Martial.

Ander Herrera and Juan Mata returned from injury as Mourinho rolled out a 4-1-4-1 first-half formation, in which Marcus Rashford was used as the lone striker, and a 3-5-2 after the break.

United’s most popular defensive pick in FPL, Victor Lindelof (12.1%), put in a more assured performance as part of a back three, with Mourinho declaring post-match that patience was required with his new centre-half.

“Benfica is one of the dominant teams, so he’s more used to playing with the ball than without the ball, so he needs his time and we are going to give him his time to develop. Such a young player needs time. Manchester United is a huge club with huge responsibility; the Premier League is the same. So let’s give him time, but we’re happy with what he is doing, step by step.”

With Phil Jones preferred alongside Eric Bailly in the first half, it would appear that Mourinho may well be leaning towards that pairing for the opening fixture at West Ham. Certainly, Lindelof’s start remains far from assured and the teamsheets against Sampdoria on Wednesday and Real Madrid in the Super Cup on August 8 will be key.

Elsewhere, Pogba – found in 19.9% of FPL squads – enjoys an even bigger ownership base. He continues to impress from a deep-lying midfield role which allows him a certain freedom to roam forward but he’s produced just one pre-season assist and is yet to score.

The news that Nemanja Matic is due to sign for United could well be vital to Pogba’s Fantasy potential.

The arrival of Matic will give Mourinho greater security in central midfield areas and allow him more freedom to grant Pogba license to join the attack with greater regularity. Matic will surely be handed the responsibility to screen the defence, with both Ander Herrera and Pogba relinquished of defensive duty – at least to some extent.

Mkhitaryan also remains a consideration and warrants tracking. He now has two goals and three assists as he looks to nail down regular starts, perhaps in the number ten role.

The Armenian’s 5.6% ownership marks him out as solid differential material to exploit United’s excellent early schedule – a trip to Liverpool looks like being the toughest test they’ll face across the first eight Gameweeks of the season.

Jesse Lingard, who had featured in every pre-season match prior to yesterday was absent with a knock.

United XI First half: Romero; Darmian, Bailly, Jones, Blind; Carrick; Fellaini, Pogba, Mata, Mkhitaryan; Rashford.

United XI Second half: Romero (J. Pereira 61); Lindelof, Smalling, Tuanzebe; Mitchell, Fosu-Mensah, Pogba (McTominay 61), Herrera, A. Pereira; Martial, Lukaku.

Arsenal 1 Sevilla 2

Arsenal’s record signing Alexandre Lacazette hit his first goal on home soil as the Gunners contrived to lose a match and yet still win a cup.

The French striker, owned by 18.3% of FPL managers, converted an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross at the far post to level their Emirates Cup tie with Sevilla.

Lacazette was then substituted, with a number of reports suggesting he had picked up an injury.

Arsene Wenger was quick to scotch those rumours post-match, taking the chance to play down the expectations on his new signing while he was about it.

“No, he was okay. I did take him off, but it was not because he was injured. The only thing I must say with Lacazette, week after week he looks to adapt quickly but overall I think it will take him one or two months.”

The Sevilla match was the Gunners’ second in 24 hours, prompting Wenger to field a much-changed side in which Hector Bellerin, a 13.7%-owned FPL asset, and Oxlade-Chamberlain were used as wing-backs and midfielder Mohamed Elneny again found himself in the back three.

Elneny’s fellow defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin played no part in proceedings and Wenger confirmed that he is unlikely to be fit for the weekend’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea.

“He looks like he has a scan tomorrow (Monday) and I don’t think he will be available for the weekend. He doesn’t look bad, but he will not be available. (It is an) ankle problem, ligament.”

Sevilla won both their Emirates Cup matches and yet it was the hosts who lifted the trophy on goals scored – a strange state of affairs that had a slight ‘my ball, my rules’ feel to it.

Arsenal won’t enjoy such quirks when the season starts, but a relatively generous early schedule could compensate for that.

The Gunners end their pre-season with the Community Shield clash with Chelsea on Sunday. Wenger’s line-up at Wembley will surely give us clear indication of the likely XI to face Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

Arsenal XI: Cech; Koscielny, Elneny (Walcott 77), Monreal; Bellerin (Bramall 46), Ramsey, Willock (Xhaka 60), Oxlade-Chamberlain; Ozil, Welbeck; Lacazette (Iwobi 77).

Bournemouth 0 Valencia 1

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe started his new recruits as the Cherries fell just short against a strong Valencia side.

Jermain Defoe, Nathan Ake, Asmir Begovic and winger Connor Mahoney, signed on a free transfer when his contract expired at Blackburn Rovers, were all given more than an hour’s pitch-time.

Two Smiths – Adam and Brad – returned from injury to slot into a defence that performed well, and it took a fine second-half goal from Valencia’s Fabian Orellana to breach it.

Bournemouth had played just 24 hours before, against QPR, so the side Howe picked for the Valencia encounter was closing in on his strongest available, although the likes of Charlie Daniels and the in-form Jordan Ibe were rested and Josh King, Junior Stanislas and Callum Wilson are currently out with knocks or injuries.

And which of Begovic and Artur Boruc ends up claiming the starting goalkeeper role remains open, according to the post-match comments of Bournemouth’s assistant manager Jason Tindall.

“There’s no guarantee of who will start. There is healthy competition for the goalkeeper position this year with Artur playing yesterday and Asmir playing today. Artur has been an excellent goalkeeper for us over the last three years and Asmir has impressed us so far. They push each other at training which is good to see”.

Bournemouth XI: Begovic (Ramsdale 69); A Smith (Worthington 67), Cook, Ake, B Smith (Harfield 67); Mahoney (Whitfield 67), Arter, Gosling, Pugh, Fraser; Defoe (Cornick 67).

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    City v Kane

When the FPL player list was revealed Kane was, for many, the first name on their team sheet.

But with Spurs patchy form in pre-season and Kane’s notorious slow starts, (as detailed by Ownership Tactician here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/30/fpl-player-list-analysis-budget-midfielders/?hc_page=6#hc_comment_15987595 ) is he really essential?

A key factor in some wavering is that City have had such a strong pre-season. We can’t have all the heavy hitters and for some the lure of the likes of Jesus or freeing up funds for KDB in midfield is too strong to hang onto a 12.5 asset playing away every week for a team that is struggling to gain momentum pre-season.

As Cesc's Old Mullet has already detailed there are plenty of other reasons for going Kane-less.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/30/fpl-player-list-analysis-budget-midfielders/?hc_page=18#hc_comment_15989465

What are you doing about Kane? Do you think Alli or Eriksen represent better value for Spurs coverage?

Is having City and Kane coverage possible? Or are you favouring the likes of Jesus over the England striker?

And for those without Kane - what have you done with the spare change that decision frees up?

As well as letting us know your views in this thread we have also created a poll on this issue – at the time of writing the combined waverers and Kane ditchers are outscoring those who believe Kane to be essential

        Cheers. 🙂

Been in Cornwall lying on the beach and out in a boat watching dolphins and seals. Marvellous part of the world.

Looks like I've come back to a wavering enthusiasm for Kane.

He's still in my team by the way - but so too is KDB. I like them both. The good thing about starting with Kane is flexibility - he's very easy to 'downgrade' to Aguero/Lacazette/Jesus etc......very difficult to upgrade to though if he goes goal crazy as he did at the end of last season.

All about flexibility in these early few weeks.

For flexibility, just go with Jesus with 2m ITB and upgrade to Kane in GW3 if needed. No one's gonna captain Kane in the first 2 weeks anyway. I know it sounds difficult to leave 2m ITB, but it really isn't.

This. If I go without kane, it's 50% to invest elsewhere. Then, if Kane does well, it would require a hit to obtain him. So, it's a bit of an either-or scenario.

And if Kane goes up 0.1 in the first couple of gwks? You'd need to put back 2.5...can't see many doing that.

I think the slow start thing is being over-blown as is the big pitch.

I'm in the camp of, I'd rather risk having him than not. Lukaku is a dead cert in my team and I have KDB. That makes me happier going without Aguero or Jesus (especially when I'm not 100% Aguero will start).

That leaves other big hitters - Lacazette (more than happy to wait and see, especially with so much uncertainty at Arsenal still), and Morata (will he even start up front)?

Kane is an essential starter for me at the moment, don't see that changing.

This is 98% my rationale as well. KDB as a more than decent City assett, uncertainty about Aguero/Jesus, lack of faith in other premium striker options - and flexibiily. If I'm going to get burned by Aguero or Kane, I prefer to get burned by the one easiest to downgrade.

I'm gonna have him in from the start- Newcastle better away from home defensively than at home, Chelsea having as ropey a pre-season as Spurs and then a plum tie against Burnley (don't mention last season :P).
Had triple Spurs attack at the end of last season such was volume of goals they were scoring. If they come anywhere near that this season you'll want Kane + at least one other.

1-2 goals by kane against newcastle and he is 12.8 by gw 2 and you have to rip up your team. Easy to downgrade to jesus or anyone for that matter if he looks rusty. Staying put in my team. Lukaku or jesus is my dilemma

Not going near spurs until after a few weeks of the season, I have even dumped Trippier. Out of all of the top 6, they haven't strengthened, have been moved to Wembley, aren't showing any preseason form and, like Chelsea, have some of the highest prices in the game.

I absolutely love Kane but he's surely not getting into my GW1 team. 12.5m is too much to spend on a single player, especially with the sky high player prices (Defoe at 8.5m? Really???) this season. It's a wait and watch as to how the Wembley factor affects Tottenham and Kane; for now, I'm sticking with Eriksen as my Spurs attacking cover.

How are Chelsea looking strong? Their pre season hasn't been that great and just as patchy as Spurs, think they have lost twice, they are also without Hazard and Costa who saved them when they played Spurs at Wembley last year, up to their inclusion, Spurs were the better team.

If Spurs want the Wembley monkey off their back early, getting a result against Chelsea will do it and their is probably no better time to play them with no Hazard, Costa, maybe Pedro and with Morata not settled.

I hope everyone buys into this "Kane slow starter" bobbins so I can have him all to myself come GW1.

His first season he wasn't first choice, his second season was poor admittedly, last season was OK. In both of those seasons his summers were messed up due to summer tournaments. So what we have is 1 out of three seasons being a slow start, and even that has a pretty big caveat beside it.

Fitness permitting I'll back him strongly to get 30 goals. I've not been this confident about a player going into a season since the RVP glory days.

As a spurs fan, Kane was the first player I picked. However, I'm now not sure whether to go with him (and no Man City players in my team at all), or go all in on City. Worried about a potential slow start for Spurs at Wembley, but also cautious of squad rotation at City.
      Either: Kane, Coutinho, Dawson
      Or
      Jesus, KDB, Kompany.

      Thoughts welcome!

I remember people doubting Kane's ability last season (between motivation and away form and Hull's 'resilience') and he got 7 goals in 2 games.

I'm going with him, it's easy to get swap out the most expensive player, lot harder to get him in if he starts strong.

People should be planning to save their 1st free transfer, if Kane starts strong, that will be hard to do unless you wanna wait and pay 12.8m+ for him

I think those final two bizarre games (v lei, hul) have made a massive difference in perception. 22 goals before then was good still, but just imagine his final two games had been BUR and HUL. Those seven goals plus WBA, SWA and a few other White Hart Lane fixtures have enhanced our view of Kane. Dele Alli or Eriksen all day. Spurs to finish out of the top 3 this year too, dare I say top 4 even.

Why is it valid to discount those games? Do you do it every time a player scores 3+? But you're right, 22 goals in 27 games is still outrageous. Doesn't make the arguement against owning him any stronger in my eyes.

How is that even a talking point? Take Lukaku's 3 hatricks away and he's not worth 11.5.

Of course it is a talking point. If you can have a whole discussion about him starting seasons slowly, equally you can have a discussion about putting 7 past teams who had given up for summer. Added to that, Kane's big hauls at White Hart Lane are no longer likely to happen, are they? How he/Spurs fare at Wembley is anyone's guess, short-sighted to ignore his strength at home over the last few seasons.

Again the Wembley thing strikes me as nothing more than superstition. The isn't something magical about the grass that makes them better at WHL. Teams tend to play better at home primarily because of the crowd disproportionately backing them. This will still happen at Wembley. Them playing poorly there last season in the CL again reeks of erroneous conclusions based on small sample size.

Agreed seen it with arsenal when they played at Wembley when used to small Highbury pitch and even when they moved to the Emirates they really struggled initially. They might be classed as the "home" team but that Wembley pitch is anything but home compared to WHL

My thoughts are based more upon how West Ham fared last season after their move. Would you rather play West Ham at Upton Park or the London Stadium? Same home support, yet I'm sure the latter would be your answer. It would be interesting to analyse how other teams' home records differed after a move. I think there's a lot to be said for the positive effects of routine and familiarity. I don't doubt that Kane is a great player, but my point is that he not exactly essential and I predict that other forwards three or four other forwards will be with 2-3 goals of him around the 22 goal mark.

Ah yes, those end of season dead-rubber fixtures. If you aren't going to understand my point that his form away from the Lane was not so good until the final two then I will rest my case.

Anyway, if you really want to and don't worry about checking with me in the future!

End of season dead rubber fixtures makes no sense as a justification while many are trying to cram City assets in after a few meaningless pre season fitness builders.

Dead rubber v pointless training games.

Trying to convince yourself that going without Kane is a good idea will just bring you pain and suffering, there was a situation last season where many convinced themselves that his shots on target numbers had dipped so was not worth it and started selling, a week or two later he played Watford and then went on an unbelievable run of form, that's how quick he can turn.

Form in pre season means nothing, most clubs just use it to build fitness and is not really a reason to write genuine class off, he's as close to fixture proof as it gets at the moment.

Saying you shouldn't have him because you won't captain him makes no sense either, you can only captain one player, does it mean you only own one player over 10m as a result? If so, no point going for KDB or Jesus either.

      Foster
      Kolasinac, Trippier, Yoshida, Mee
      KDB, Zaha, Stanislas
      Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

      4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5

Here we are, both Kane and double City coverage. What do you think?

I'm going to have Kane in my team!

I think that the positives outweigh the negatives with him!

If he has a few blanks at the start of the season, he can easily be shifted out (if necessary)... However, if he explodes, it's going to be sickening not owning him, and VERY difficult to get him in after that...

Kane is my Captain at the moment.
He is having a full pre-season and I have a feeling that there is a little bit more to play for than just the points.... Spurs got embarrassed in their last game against Newcastle and that will surely add some extra motivation to get off to a good start.

Plus what are your other options up front? Lacazette and Morata are new to the league, Aguero not nailed it seems and that leaves basically Jesus. (I'm assuming most people have Lukaku already). Going down the price list from there you have Defoe (new club), Austin/Gabbiadinni (minutes?), Rodriquez (west brom attacker?)... to really free up some funds to invest in Midfield you will have to choose between Chicharito (I have him already), Firminio and perhaps Troy Deeney.

I'm not sure that I will free up enough funds if I swap Kane for Firminio to really upgrade a midfielder to a powerhouse that I need at the start of the season to justify going without Kane.

Still not sure what to do with Kane but if i don't pick him i certainly won't be leaving money in the bank! Having Alonso or any of the 10-11.5m strikers gives the option of getting Kane in two transfers for a -4 which isn't bad to get the guy in form who is rising rapidly (assuming that is the case). In Alonso's case you have for BUR(H) and ship before a tricky run or you have Jesus and Lacazette and their minutes or form is in question. Thinking of this line up, RMT if you like! -

        De Gea
        Trippier - Bertrand - Alonso
        Iwobi - Alli - Sane - Willian
        Jesus - Laca - Rashford

        Elliot - Can - Francis - Humemier

Yeah starting to have second thoughts on Sane too, he could go up to Coutinho or Salah. I was thinking of Ramsey but i feel Iwobi could do as well or better. Rashford for Chicarito could also work but he's my Lukaku alternative.

pre-season is not a benchmark - everyone should know this

his past two seasons (one before that can't possibly be considered) are however

the reason i'm going with him is simple - I like his week one fixture and if he blanks/looks off the pace I can transfer him out for any striker in the game for week two without a hit

I'm doing the hokey-cokey with Kane. Today he's in. But I'm tripling on City - KdB and 2 defenders.

Point of information: I remember City getting off to a phenomenal start in the PL last season, but what sort of pre-season did they have?

Was there any correlation with other teams having a good/bad pre-season and good/bad start to the PL season last year?

I'm still leaning towards having kane. He is only improving as a player, and it is easier to sell him than buy him. I've also got KDB. I think the slow starter argument is based on a sample of data that is too small (2 seasons). For now, I think it's less of a risk to start with kane than to start without.

I think Kane will do well, but decided early on to discount. Plumped for Lukaku to captain most weeks and then want to spread rest of cash for more value e.g. more in defence than usual.

I'm hearing a lot of comments about people that will start with Kane and downgrade if he looks out of sorts etc.

Really? At what point will you make that decision, before Burnley (H)? Are you not going to be in that situation where you are terrified the minute you downgrade he cuts loose?

Pick Kane and barring injury I feel you are in for the long haul. Of course the flip side is if he cuts loose and you don't have him you are doing surgery, but all I'm saying is that there are two sides to this and neither is pleasant. But that is the beauty of FPL!

This must be THE question on everyone's minds, especially if your first choice is Lukaku, and then KDB (as I do not favour split points between Jesus and Agüero), then Kane becomes the third optionm ineed and preferring Eriksen/Alli allows you to have a better midfield, in theory. The problem is, there is no persuasive forward, either Premium or mid-priced, to justify their price tag. At the end of the day, no one is essential and you need to have a team that functions.

Thanks for the mention again Jonty.

For my team, going with or without Kane gives me this :

With : Kane, KDB, Mkhi, Yedlin
Means I have to play 3 at the back and rotate 3 4.5m defenders, and I have a ManU attack double up.

Without : Jesus, Alli/Eriksen, Salah, Kolasinac
Gives me the flexibility of playing 3 or 4 at the back, spreads the risks a bit by removing the ManU double attack.

I could also spare 0.5 and go with Bertrand instead of Kolasinac and either bank the 0.5 or upgrade Lindelöf to Bailly if it looks like he's not going to start.

And since I'm planning an early WC (GW4 or 7), I *could* even go as far as going with Jesus, Alli/Eriksen, Zaha, Bertrand, and bank the 2.5.

Again, like I said in my previous post, I might just be trying to convince myself.

Im still keen on Kane. For.one there are no good other premium options up front who are proven. Jesus does not seem like a good alternative with rotation (its just more scary now city are acoring goals).

I have a team with Alli/KdB and Kane/Lukaku that looks alright too.

I'm currently without kane in fact only trippier from spurs atm. Keep changing between Ali and salah. Just think there's a lot of uncertainty around spurs. They're out of form, lacked investment start slow. I'm sure within 5 weeks or so kane will be essential but I think he may have dropped in proceedings by then.

    Heaton...

Some of you may have seen the article I linked the other day about rotating and he was included - https://infernosix.wordpress.com/2017/07/28/rotating-goalkeepers-in-a-spin/

There was very little difference in the points he got home or away.

If that's the case do we think he can get the same kind of points this year?

The article suggests that De Gea is worth the price (and I'm starting to agree) but thinking about it some more, if Heaton can perform the same heroics as in 16/17 is there an argument to setting him and forgetting?

At £5m if he can score similar points home and away then he could be better value than those at 5.5 and 4.5.

I want to see that Burnley defence without Keane before I commit to a 5.0 gk.

For value for money I think Hart/Gomez and Foster can outperform him.

Heaton as a 4.5 gk in a defence with Keane in it is a no-brainer...take away those elements and he becomes one to monitor.

This year I just cant find the right players, for example I am set to go without Kane, with Kaku and Gayle but cant see who could be 3rd forward except City or Laca maybe. KDB wasn't that consistent last season, Jesus stats was great for the minutes he played, but in these couple of games he did nothing

From what I've read Rashford has been playing well, as has Martial. There's a chance Mkhi doesn't start, and even if he does we may have that worry about future starts.

May swap back before season begins though 😀

Yeah, the only 100% nailed attackers are Pogba and Lukaku. Martial has looked good but whether he'll play I don't know

The Spurs -Wembley Conundrum .They just arent the same free flowing team when they play there and it doesn't look like they will be any time soon.

What's your prefered formation usually and how will you start the season ? I always have gone by 3-4-3 but starting this season with 4-4-2

Not yet sure, probably a deadline day decision

      3-5-2 as of now

Feels a little to risky, suggestions?

    Foster - Myhill

    Bertrand - Trippier - Daniels - Kolasinac - Hunemeier

    Willian - Salah - Ince - KDB - Milivojevic

    Kane - Lukaku - Quaner

8/10 I wouldn't have Willian as he hasn't impressed in pre season and also dodgy formation.

    B) Pogba, Austin
    C) Alli, Austin

    Will Lacazette perform?

      That is the question.
I'm hopping between Jesus and Lacazette right now

    DDG (Elliot)
    Stones Bertrand Kolasinac Trippier (Goldson)
    Mane Alli Ince (RLC Carroll)
    Lukaku Jesus Benteke

    My big question is:
Foster Kompany Redmond or DDG Stones Ince

    Any thoughts?

If go with DDG Bertrand and Ince. Run of good fixtures for Southampton and Stones isn't nailed.

      Puncheon, Coutinho, KDB, Redmond, (Carrol)

      Gayle, Kane, Lukaku.

Thoughts on FPL removing player ownership pre-season so that no-one can see how many own player x until the season starts?

No one else considering DDG at 5.5m

I kmow the trend is cheaper keepers and rotation but other than valencia there is no one nailed at 5.5m or below in a mour defence that has been strengthened over the summer + amazing fixtures!

Plenty are, including me. I do prefer a cheaper rotating pair, but I don't really have any evidence as to the best shout yet.

Foster/Myhill is rife here, but WBA have not impressed in pre-season. WBA annoyed me last season, too.

DDG / Elliot for me & I can downgrade if need be.

That's my thinking, Utd defenders don't offer much in the way of attacking threat, so 5.5m for a nailed defender (as in DDG) makes the most sense.

Isn't this looking quite good for a 4-4-2?

    Foster
    Trippier / Lindelöf / Cédric / Daniels
De Bruyne / Eriksen / Willian / Zaha
    Kane / Lukaku

    -£0 ITB
    -Will monitor Cédric/Lindelöf
    -Only fodder on bench
    -Wildcard after GW6
-Ready to downgrade Willian or Zaha to a 5.0 to get at 6.5 forward

    RMT please...

    De Gea (Elliot)
Tripper - Yoshida - Kolasinac (Suttner - Humemeier)
Willian - Coutinho - Zaha - Pogba (Carroll)
    Kane - Jesus - Chicharito

Basically no Lukaku is the major concern, especially with his high ownership, however I think Spurs and City will score more over the season than Utd will.

    Kane, Lukaku, Defoe

Any opinions on this would be appreciated, thanks 🙂
