The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

That's weak.. it's a form of cognitive bias that people often fall for: you think that doing something is better than not doing anything. It's difficult for people to step back from those 2 choices and make a clear decision as to weather sitting still would be better or not. I took a hit and thanks to the minus 4 might as well have just saved a transfer as well

Isn't Holgate at 4.4m playing wingback a good option?

    Or Is Coleman back soon?

wouldn't be likely to be an FPL option next 2 GWs (spurs & utd) but big fixture shift afterwards makes Everton potentially interesting.

Failing to see the problem in bringing in players that are in form? The whole bandwagon thing doesn't really make sense unless someone's had one good game... firmino is brilliant for us at Liverpool and morata looks to have nailed down Chelseas striker position, what's the problem?

      JohnLeight97.

Selling Kane is going to haunt you. He's the most productive forward in the EPL.

I haven't brought him in, but he's still at the very top of my list of player whom I want in. He has had 24 chances / 2 hitting the woodwork in 3 matches. As a non-Kane owner, I consider myself lucky not to be 20 points behind those who picked him. He's destined for greatness / will probably rack up numbers similar to last year.

Mounie, however, is someone I'd easily ditch for Firmino (as he seems to be the endgame in the quest for value per million in the FPL). Your team doesn't really have a easy double-transfer to make that happen.

...ok, mate. pretty sure @Che just made a casual, light-hearted joke, not just about TX's, but that entire Squad(that'll prob do better than mine, btw)...
Then u jumped on & replied to that ONE Comment; obviously in DEFENSIVE-Mode(and I'd bet that's cause his joke hit pretty close to home...& was also hilarious) but that's cool.
U have to admit, that prob 95% of your players have had articles, price rises, 'Hot Topics', ScoutPicks, etc...& that's fine--like u said, "players that are in-form."
      Not even that important that YOU have 2-4 players who, "[have] had one good game" {Xhaka?}
      ...The Problem I have mate; is that u made sure to mention being a Liverpool supporter...and THAT is Your Team?! {MaxOut w/ 3-ManU? but only 1-LFC? ok, but then the 'enablers' u selected (imo) are at best, equal too, the likes of: Can, TA-A, Gomez, etc}
...but also pretty sure the #1 Cause of missed pts. is fan bias. Anyway, I apologize if my opinion offends. No disrespect!
and hey, if your current method of transportation ever breaks down & leaves you on the side of the road....at least YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE!

Sell him before price drop to Lacazette/Morata and after gw4 buy him back again at 12.2 if he blanks against Everton. This will save .3m while allowing a good option in gw4. Should I use transfers elsewhere but if not Lacazette(c) or Morata?

The way I'm looking at it is, what will score most points?
Alli and Eriksen £19m - enough Spurs coverage
Kane and £6.5/7m FW (I know you can still have Alli or Erik, but not both and the other will bite you anyway)
With cheaper options like Firmino and Morata around, Kane can wait

Last season I was far too quick to move big hitters in and out of my team chasing form, and it was a disaster. This season I am holding players if the fixtures and stats look solid. Once the emotion is taken out, holding Kane is a no-brainer.
