Dugout Discussion – Arsenal vs West Brom

The Gameweek concludes at the Emirates Stadium, as Arsenal pay host to West Bromwich Albion.

In short, tonight’s match is very much an audition for Arsenal’s Fantasy assets, who will need to impress in order to enter our thinking for the Gameweeks ahead.

The Gunners have so far been a source of frustration, not least for manager Arsene Wenger.

Alexandre Lacazette has shown glimpses and flirted with our line-ups but goes into tonight’s match cast in the shadow of other heavy-hitters in attack. The Frenchman is still part of 10.2% of squads, though that total continues to dwindle.

Sead Kolasinac is another temptation and perhaps a more viable option.

He has impressed when handed the opportunities by Wenger and now seemingly cemented at left wing-back, he has the chance this evening to play his way into our defences. At 6.0 however, he will need to convince us to push funds into our backlines at a time when attacking players are very much the priority.

Alexis Sanchez could be one of those attacking options but his season has stalled due to injury and unrest to this point. He starts tonight and could easily become the headline act to spark Wildcards and transfer hits aplenty.

But, despite a miserable record at the Emirates, West Brom will surely prove a difficult barrier for Sanchez and Wenger’s attack.

Tony Pulis’ rearguard have conceded the fewest shots in the box in away matches this season (14) and the fewest big chances (2) – both records shared with leaders Manchester City.

They will also pose a threat to Arsenal at set-pieces. Craig Dawson – owned by 4.9% – scored a brace from corner kicks the last time these two teams met.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hey guys, Im currently on the No Vardy No Party boat but planning to change boat after the international break... By getting Vardy in, i will lose either david silva (red hot form) or Jones ( poor fixture) or Davies (expensive but not giving me enough points). What is the best way to upgrade vardy ?

    a) sell jones and vardy for mbemba and morata
    b) sell Davies and vardy for simpson and morata
    c) Forget morata and stick with vardy

    Current team:
    elliot - Foster
    Jones-Cedric-Davies-4.0-Naughton
    miki-salah-silva-tlc-carrol
    aguero-kane-vardy

Fixtures having said that I will lose Mkhi but hold Jones - Jones value is too good but you think the same about Mkhi.
I just see Mou reverting to type and the goals drying up.
I have Morata and will lose Mkhi before GW8 for Silva.

I saw your post last week, we have near identical teams!

      Foster Elliot
      Bavies Jones Lowe Mee Long
      Eriksen Salah Mkhi Willian Carroll
      Kane Lukaku Abraham

      2ft 0.3 itb

I considered Willian to Ramsey last week, strongly. But Willian not starting in the cup persuaded me to keep him another game.

This week I'm thinking Willian and Lowe to Kolasinac and Choupo, what do you think?

Also, have u used ur WC? When do u plan to use it? Im planning to use mine after this GW.

Don't know if you'll see this reply. Not a fan of choupo so I wouldn't do that.
I haven't wildcarded yet. I don't see myself using it for a few weeks since I've got 2ft and few issues atm

        1. Meeseeks
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Glad u replied. Well my teams almost the same, so no issues either so to speak.

My thinking is maybe the wildcard needs to be used proactively, there is a swing in fixtures coming up, Uniteds getting slightly worse and Chelseas and city's getting better. Feel like restructuring the team to include morata, aguero, and losing maybe lukaku. Also tammy needs to go soon with so many forwards doing well, maybe bringing in vardy as the third striker. A bit of switching my cheap defenders for other cheap defenders with better fixtures too. And lastly, moving out mkhi who has looked so so with worse fixtures coming.

Just curious on your thinking since we r sitting on very similar teams. It's done quite well so far, I just worry that I end up waiting for things to get bad before wildcarding rather than doing something proactively.

2 Fts. No 'fires', but could do with a restructure eventually which would take at least 3-4 transfers.

Is there real value to be had on Firmino --> Vardy? Firmino tends to lack involvement in end product and doesn't get 90 minutes, but Vardy's shooting numbers aren't very impressive. Should be worth it for fixtures though, right? Just ignore the stats and trust that he will kick on being clinical.

In a more controversial move... looking to do Kane+Jones --> Morata+Azpilicueta next week. Will get Jones back GW12 when they have good fixtures and Sot'n's take a dire turn.

    1. Jafalad
      • 14 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

      Yes - he needs moving.

The problem is there are no alternatives that I can see apart from Ritchie or downgrade Mooy to RLC and upgrade a defender to someone like Azpi or Alonso.

      1. waldo666
        • 13 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

Yeah that's not a bad ploy, but I have Carroll already and not especially keen on running with two 4.5 mids. However if it means I can turn Bertrand into Azpi then maybe it could work. Food for thought anyway so cheers.

          • 14 Years

Yes, Azpi is the smart option and looks to be matching Alonso. I'm not keen on two 4.5s either but there is nothing that stands out.

Richarlison and Choupo-Moting have much better attacking stats than Mooy and Ritchie. But of course Ritchie has the set pieces (though not as many with Shelvey on the pitch)

      1. waldo666
        • 13 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

I do have some cash ITB and Ritchie is an option but have Joselu as my third striker currently and not sure I want another Newcastle attacker. Choupo-Moting has the fixtures soon and whilst I will admit I haven't really delved into the stats I'm just not sure he'll produce.

        1. Pierce34

Yeah fair enough - personally I've taken a punt on both Richarlison and Choupo-Moting. So far Richarlison has paid off, we'll see how it works out medium term.

  24. To Wildcard or not to Wildcard?

Some thoughts re use of the wildcard. Seen a lot of people on here contemplating using it and being told to wait because their team looks 'fine'. At this stage, and with every gw that passes, having no major issues becomes less and less of a reason not to wc. The career HOF top 5 (and Ville Ronka for those who still consider him to be the oracle) have now all pressed the button. Their teams weren't terrible, they're amongst the very best of the 5m people that play this game, but 6 gw's in, they've all taken the opportunity to shuffle their decks. This will be partly because they had issues they needed to address, partly because of fixture swings, partly to catch price rises but also, In suspect they felt they had enough information to select a better team from scratch than what was left of the educated guesses they'd made pre gw1. When wc'ing, I think it is important to realise that you don't have to keep anyone just because they're doing ok. I have very few changes I 'need' to make but if I started playing in gw8, I'm asking myself how many of my current side would make the cut. There are keepers that rotate better with Elliott than Foster, so he can go. Valencia, Mkhi and Lukaku have served me very well but after Palace and for the next few weeks, I'd rather have Azpi, Silva and Aguero/Morata etc. So my advise would be that if there are maybe 6 or more players in your dream team for gw8 onwards that aren't in your current team, treat yourself to a 1gw punt this week and spend the IB putting together the best combination of 15 players that you can (based on 7 gws of data, not being swayed by the random midfielder that scored a brace in gw7 having done sweet fa in the previous 6 gws). Sound advice or am I chatting rubbish?

This is worth a reply. I've wildcarded this week not because there was anything wrong with my team but because so many of the players I wanted were about to rise. I'd have loved to have waited a week but if I had i'd be 0.6m short of my dream team (more if any rise twice). There is a law of diminishing returns with the wildcard. You will naturally fix problems as you go so waiting for the GW for your team to actually need a wildcard may never happen and you end up using it just to fix minor issues.

I'm a bit in the keep my team or GW8 wildcard group.

      Current team is

      Foster Elliot
      Davies Daniels Cedric Suttner Long
      Mkhi Salah Ritchie Carroll Carrick
      Aguero Kane Lukaku

      1 FT, 0 in bank.

Could save this week then change 3 players for a hit which probably costs money unless they are early risky transfers.

Ive been looking for this very hot topic. I always intended to wc this IB and have hence taken a few hits on the way, but my team now looks semi decent with 2 green arrows the last 2 weeks and still very much in the LMS. And after running many different combinations, RMT tells me my current team is better for the near future post gw8. Thats a very well spread out team u got there inspite of the big 3 up front. Im not in a very different situation from you and could well roll along my transfer and have a mini wc at the break.

Although i am very tempted to sub alonso for kola vs brighton as a one week punt so as to not waste the transfer in case i do end up wildcarding.

I think the availability of the Free Hit chip further reduces the need for the WC as an emergency fix tool.

I'm biased though - am planning to use my WC even though I will make less than 6 changes, the fixture swings feel too big to ignore.

Good advice mate. But it still depends on your team.
I am having 2FTs every week for a number of weeks now, and I can't even see a need to use the 2nd, let alone wildcard.
I agree Man Utd fixtures are not promising after Palace, so I'd get rid of some Utd players and get in more Chelsea and Man City in my team after this week .

Very good advice. I was pretty unhappy with my team going into this week particularly as a Jesus owner. I put together a few potential wildcard drafts and posted on here, but I didn't wildcard as my team was "fine" and I hoped stupidly that Jesus would play.

That decision cost me about 30-35 points from the wildcard team I would have had, as I would have got in Aguero (c), Jones, Kola/Monreal amongst others.

Bottom line is I'm now wildcarding this week.

My team is well set up for GW8 and beyond except for 2 players, Mkhi and Lukaku. Will replace them with 2 FT which I will have next week. I don't need to wildcard.

This is my current thinking, which is leading me toward a Kun>Lukaku(c) switch this week.

However, I've done a couple of WC drafts with GW8 in mind and unless I switch out Kane (BOU), I can't really make the type of changes I'd really want to make - and could just as easily get two or three key players for a hit or two.

I don't really need to wildcard and don't think there needs to be a panic to get rid of the chip - we do have until Christmas! Got 2FT, not even sure I need to use one of those. Planning to make some minor move this week and then probably use the 2 frees to ship Dawson and Lukaku to Azpi and Morata. Can then do Mkhi to Silva the next week and boom I've navigated the fixture swing. With so many premiums delivering and Man City so strong I don't want more City than one. Price rises are a lame justification to wildcard, they happen all the time so you'll get them whenever you play it.

      Good "stream of consciousness" posting.

Personally, my team is okay as it is playing the bare 11 - TC is my only sub with TAA and Hunemonster rendered useless - but at this stage of the season, the subs bench is often not necessary.

A reason for wildcarding now would be to change the formation. I am still undecided about the most effective formation. It's time to hit the RMT machine in the Members' area.

Wildcarding for the sake of it is nonsense. If you really HAVE to WC then do it, if not then save it. Really doesn’t matter what the so called HOF leaders do as there are different ways to play the game.

There is no point for me to WC yet. I’ve got Forster and Bertrand who have excellent 5 fixtures. Mee has excellent home fixtures for a while yet. Salah who looks essential. Alli who isn’t in his best form but will be well rested because of other suspensions and nailed to play 90 mins as a second striker. Morata who people will bring in on WC I’ve had for a while. I’ve got Bavies who has a plum fixture in GW8. Happy with Elliot. Not in a rush to sell Hegazi either as I can afford a drop there.

So that’s already 9 of 15 players that I’m happy with and I haven’t even started on the 3 United players. So you’re saying we have enough information but what information do we have on United in the big games this season? Lukaku scored and missed a sitter in the only big game United have had this season (Real in the SC). Why can’t he bully that fragile LIV defence at Anfield? And he has Huddersfield the week after, good luck behind the sofa when his EO will be insane. There’s a case to be made for Mkhi that he is at his best vs teams with a high defensive line. He will get that vs LIV and TOT. In fact he scored the only goal in the game vs TOT last season. So why not keep him considering his price?

You’re saying we have enough info but the fact is we really don’t. With 5 teams in CL, a jampacked schedule with 8 GWs between the end of November and start of January, there is bound to be big rotations. Good luck to the people who don’t really need to use the WC and are only playing it for the sake of it.

Good post. I think in general till 4/5 GWs it doesn't make sense to do WC. For lack of data. After that as you say every week is potential WC time depending on fixture swings, injuries, rotation etc.

I learnt about the perils of early WC the hard way when I panicked into a WC in GW3 and shipped out jesus, Kola, Ritchie, Salah. For the weeks 3,4,5 my WC team underperformed my GW2 team. GW6 was the first time the current team has outperformed. Arguably I could have arrived at this point with a few transfers and hits while having higher points on the board.

Hazard and Morta will be awesome picks after next game week. I'm on the fence about Alonzo. I had him from GW1 last season and never let him go. I'm not sure that he will have the same season this year tho and 7 mil is just too much.

Ya, don't see them getting as many clean sheets this year. But I treat him as a midfielder and at 7 mil he's one of the best options imo. Great fixtures gw8-10, can always sell after that.

I'm looking to have Alonso+Azpi+Morata after this coming week. Think they will all be reliable and easy long-term options. Will definitely be looking at Hazard to see if he's worth having over Alonso.

Both Alonso and Azpi seems too much imo. How is your midfield looking?

I agree, but the one I'm getting rid of is Kane who is also probably overpriced value wise when we look at the other strikers performing (disregarding the captain option). Picks like Jones are key to good defensive scores.
Midfield is pretty ragged, I don't like any of the mid price options and the budget options I've picked have done nothing while I've had them. Currently:
            Eriksen - Mkhi - Mooy - Chalobah - Carroll (4-3-3)
Carroll has been a big disappointment, but I'll be happy to have RLC in a few weeks. Mooy --> Salah is likely after their hard games pass.

Getting 2-3 points consistently, i.e. starting all games and not getting yellow cards is pretty much all I'd expect from a 4.5m midfielder. There were exceptions last year like Capoue but I think Carroll's performance is the norm. Personally don't think RLC will perform much better either.

I agree in general, I guess the allure of Carroll's set pieces has created the illusion of false potential. Saw him as the successor to Siggy, which would have been gold. RLC has looked really good, their best player pretty much every game he's played, but you're right he still hasn't managed to find the net or set anyone up.
