The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 8

Manchester City are threatening to break Fantasy Football.

An irresistible attacking force, they appear to be capable of skittling any defence that stands in their way and, in doing so, they are presenting Fantasy managers with an extraordinary array of options.

The challenge, of course, is to exploit their incredible form to the full. This becomes a more thankless task with the passing of each and every Gameweek.

Today’s 7-2 victory over a shell-shocked Stoke City took Pep Guardiola’s side to a total of 17 goals from their last three home matches and 24 from the last five Gameweeks.

I had to go back and re-check those numbers, leaving me wonder if we’ve ever seen a single team provide such a relentless avalanche of Fantasy points.

The underlying statistics are even more staggering.

A tally of 103 shots, 73 of which have arrived in the box with 28 big chances. Guardiola’s side have fired a shot every 4.6 minutes over the past five Gameweeks.

Three City players scored double figures in today’s victory, with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva also fetching nine and seven points respectively. And this without Sergio Aguero in the mix.

Indeed, the array of choice available has become bewildering.

Raheem Sterling’s 15-points surely underlines his potential during this, his most prolific spell of his career. The “winger” has now scored six goals and supplied two assists over five starts in the last six Gameweeks.

Sterling has been in Guardiola’s starting line-up each time when available from Gameweek 3 onwards and, priced at just 8.0; he surely justifies his rank at the top of our midfield Watchlist. He is already the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9’s visit from Burnley.

Then there is Sane.

Perhaps a more traditional wide player, less inclined to tuck inside to flank the central striker, the German has produced four goals and three assists from the last five Gameweeks. However, he has only made the starting line-up over the last three.

De Bruyne and Silva remain the creators. Less explosive, they are nonetheless consistent points scorers that also scream for our attention. The latter struck his first goal of the season today, while De Bruyne chalked up a fifth assist.

It’s difficult to separate the pair, but Silva’s price, at 1.5 cheaper, is surely a key factor. Crucially, as today’s goal indicated, the Spaniard also appears to have upped his direct threat to opponents, adding a new convincing string to his creative bow.

These are just the standout midfield offerings. When we start to contemplate the situation up front, our decision process becomes even more cloudy.

Gabriel Jesus reacted to Sergio Aguero’s return from injury with a brace and a 13-point return today. We now have to consider how Guardiola will marry the pair.

He will surely want to avoid disrupting the almost perfect blend he has discovered, and neither Sane nor Sterling can really warrant exclusion.

Could that lead to Guardiola rotating his two central strikers, or will he revert back to pairing them in attack, sacrificing one of his support attackers?

Jesus owners will be counting today’s points but also looking ahead to the Gameweek 9 meeting with Burnley and wondering Pep’s next move.

But surely we have to question whether Jesus and Aguero warrant our investment regardless.

Even if their minutes are managed from here on, while City’s thirst for goals remains unquenchable, perhaps we just can’t lose.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    My front 3 are

    Lukaku Kane Jesus

Iv money in the bank to upgrade Jesus to Aguero.

Is it worth it or upgrade elsewhere?

    Fab
    Kola Jones Naughton Davies(Hunemeier)
    Salah Mhki Atsu (Carroll RLC)

Mhki plays Huddersfield next so keeping for that.

        What about

Good point, keep Micky for one more week.

That does look good, except that would force you into playing Hunemeier every week because I assume you're playing a 433, which I wouldnt want.
Rather do Hunemeier > Mbemba, and Atsu > Choupo.
Then you will still have enough to do Jesus > Aguero the following week

Stoke are crap in defence even more so away from Britannia. Pope has made a lot of saves and conceded what 3 goals in 4 and half games? Does everyone think it will be another City mauling next week? I'll stick with Jesus and Sterling I think

Hazard a no for me. Chelsea without Kante looks different. Hazard is not yet back at top gear, performance not consistent so far.

The best strategy is to captain the MC player that is benched or subbed away early in midweek.

I like sane over Sterling. Its not the popular option but

    - He creates more than Sterling imo so Pep should favour him as time progresses.
    - I think Jesus is more likely to replace Sterling if Aguero & Jesus both play.
    - Then there is the Bernado Silva factor and he seems to play where Sterling plays more than on Sane's favoured side...
    - Plus with Mendy out they need the left hand side threat from somewhere and Sane seems to provide that. (Walker provides on other side more thna Delph)
    - Taking into account all this IMO as things stand Sane will be more nailed than Sterling...

    Interested to hear your thoughts..

Yes I agree... The Napoli games are going to play a big part in selection.

Strongest team for Napoli could actually tell us more about Pep's preferred lineup..

I do think that Bernado Silva will get a couple of full games very soon to rest other players...

You can see what the competition in the team is doing though - nobody wants to take the foot off the gas, everyone trying to prove themselves and score right up to last minute generally.

17 touches in the penalty box for Raheem Sterling this week.
More than Man Utd, Chelsea, Stoke, West Ham and Bournemouth managed as a team this weekend. Perhaps Sterling AND Sane, but not as an alternative.

Some of those suggestions is valid but especially the first one and to a lesser extent the second one is pure guessing.

I like your thinking, but from the sample we have so far it seems that Sterling is somewhat more nailed in premier league matches. But it could very well be another case in the future.

Right now it seems that City is firing so both are good picks atm. Looking at the team sheat in CHL wil lgive us some clues i think.

This year I have 3 different teams for FPL - More of an experiment than anything..

One started 3-4-3 and now is 4-3-3

    The other was 4-4-2

    The final one 5-2-3

The 5-2-3 formation has required far few transfers and is at 270k in the world. Also still have the wildcard for that team...

The others are just under the 1m mark...
    Very interesting...

Of course people have multiple teams.
How else do they enter silly special rule leagues like dead team or the like.
You may also want to experiment with knee-jerk taking hits team & leave it till Thursday team

But the danger is that you might find that the team that comes out top is - like for me last season - no transfers except for red flagged/ dropped players. Kind of suggests thinking about it with main team comes out worse.

In all honesty I don't know how effective they are as this is my first year using them. Started in GW4 and I do a post every week with them (found under the Hot Topic tab) called the DS spreadsheet and CS odds.

By continuing a weekly post and cross referencing with the clean sheet odds, I'm hoping to see some sort of historical data and then I'll have the answer for you. For now, they started off by pointing me towards Kolasina(c) which hauled 22 that week, and in the main so far they've been holding up. Off the top of my head I can only remember the Spurs Swansea game (DS700) and the Everton game that haven't panned out.

The person top of my mini league has had the same strike force all season.

    Lacazette - Chicarito - Rooney

It really shouldn't be working. But...

He has had United and City midfielders and a heavy hitting back 5 & DDG. I can't see it working all season but who knows.

If Aguero is fully fit next gw do we think Pep will start both him and Jesus or just one of them? I have Jesus and Aguero double up is tempting.

Who's the other striker? I sold Lukaku on WC with money to buy him back. Currently Kane Jesus Vardy

        Currently Kane, Lukaku, Jesus.

Kane has 3 tough games in next 4. Would be him or Lukaku to Aguero.

KDB, Firmino & Kane have been the biggest trolls for me so far this season, haven't got more than 2-3 points each gw when i've had them

Can't argue with the fact Jones offers one of the best value defenders in the game, however that could bite you in the long term as Valencia offers more for the big hauls.
