Dugout Discussion – Burnley vs Newcastle

The Gameweek finale falls on Turf Moor, for a Monday night encounter under the lights between Burnley and Newcastle United.

Fantasy interest is limited, in the main, to the defensive players on show. That’s a good thing scanning the statistics building up to this match.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets have scored the fewest home league goals this season, with just two efforts. But his defence have been typically miserly: only Liverpool and Manchester United have allowed fewer goals than the two conceded by Burnley.

Meanwhile, Newcastle arrive boasting just three away goals, only Everton and Crystal Palace have scored fewer.

Their goalkeeper, Rob Elliot, is the most owned player on show this evening. Now part of 26.4% of squads, the Magpies custodian trails only David De Gea (39.2%) in that respect. However, some 62% of Elliot’s 1.4 million owners keep him on the bench for Gameweek 10.

Stephen Ward has become the go-to option in the Burnley defence. The left-back is now owned by 14.7% of managers having already produced a goal and two assists this season, alongside three clean sheets.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Okay. Going round in circles...

    Squad:

    Elliot. Speroni.
    Kola. Jones. Lascelles. Ward. Hunemei.
    Eriksen. Sterling. Silva. Surman. Salah.
    Kane. Kun. Diouf.

1FT and a whopping £0.2m in the bank.

    Wtf do I do next?!

    1 FT, 2.1m ITB

    Forster (Elliot)
Valencia - Lascelles - Mee - Kiko (Cresswell)
Hazard - Silva - Sterling - Richarlison (Carroll)
    Aguero - Morata (McBurnie)

    A) Forster, Morata > Pope, Kane -4
    B) Cresswell, Morata > Moreno, Kane -4
    C) Anything else

Assuming Kane is fit of course.

In their last 38 Premier League home matches under Sean Dyche, Burnley have conceded 32 goals, and kept 14 clean sheets.

For reference, 32 goals conceded in 38 games last season would have been the third best record in the league, behind only United and Spurs, and 14 clean sheets would have equalled Southampton as the fourth best record, behind United, Spurs and Chelsea.

As well as their 14 clean sheets, Burnley conceded 1 goal in 15 of those matches, conceded 2 goals on 8 occasions, and conceded 3 goals just once. They've never conceded more than 3 goals in a game at home in the Premier League under Dyche.

The reference to United and Spurs is irrelevant as you don't play 38 home games during a season.

Good record mind you and they are becoming better away from home too. I'm looking at doubling up Mee with Pope.

      1. Ludo
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 6 months ago

Not quite irrelevant - it's just a comparison to give some context to the numbers. You don't play 38 home games in a season, but you can play a 4.5 Burnley defender in 19 home games only, and none of their away matches.

If they can maintain this home record, those matches should get you a similar return to what you'd expect from playing a premium defender every week.

Fair point, though if I remember correctly, I only said he looked a decent punt for the next two gameweeks, in which he did get an assist! The five consecutive blanks that followed are nothing to do with me 😉

I'd never blame you - only one man makes the decisions in my team, I should have used eye test and not been lazy relying on stats only. The problem is that his dead balls in have been dreadful and he offers little other than that.

Glad I went with Pope/Ward double up on wildcard.

Their short term away fixtures also look good so I’ll be playing one of them every week I guess.

Just to add to this, their method of defence is quite unique, relying on high numbers of blocks from Mee and Tarkowski in particular (which boosts them in the BPS). I believe they have faced the most shots of any team in any of the premier league, la liga, serie a, bundesliga, and ligue 1, yet have one of the best defensive records. They primarily foce the opposition to take long range pot shots, which are of course low percentage, and have the benefit of enabling pope to make high numbers of saves too (which also boosts him in the BPS).

Away from home is also much improved from last season. They have faced Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Everton and Man City so far, conceding 7 in total only (last season they conceded 12 across those fixtures). That is a good record, and with Southampton, Bournemouth, Leicester and Brighton up next away from home, they look excellent value to field in all fixtures. A double up of a defender with Pope is also worth considering.

I have absolutely no idea why so few who w/c'd in week 8 failed to bring in Pope and Ward.

Not only cs, you get save points with Pope.

Pope rotted with Flapperski is a match made in heaven.

Dilemma this week... Give Ritchie and Joselu another chance against Bmouth at home or ship them out and get Richarlison and Abraham for a hit?

    Yay or Nay?

The former would give me 2 FTs to go into the international break...

I really find it annoying that you can't change the GW in the "Pick Team"-section of the FPL site/app.
Quite inconvenient that there isn't an easy way to see your players' opponents for a future GW.

I would really love this feature and it should be fairly easy for them to include. Is it just me who think this feature is missing?

Also if anyone knows of a site with this feature, I would love to hear about it.

I guess it would make it easier for "casuals" to plan transfers, but 1) it would level the playing field for all managers and 2) it would save managers a lot of time instead of having to do it "manually".

I'm tempted to use my FT this week too but, tbh, if there's any way you can get to a post-international break GW with two FTs then do it. If you have 11 definite starters, I think you need an exceptional reason not to carry.

Thinking of doing DDG -> Pope and getting in Jones next to Mee.
Don't really want a United defensive double, as I might want Lukaku + Pogba when he is back...

Smalling played because Mourinho went with 3 at the back as is his wont against other big teams. Against the other teams (and thus by extension those more likely to get CS against) he’d me more inclined to play a back four and Smalling would drop out.

If you want to double up, Jones and DDG is the way.

I'm so tired of guessing Peps squad that I think I'll be going without a City striker. It's affecting my whole team at this stage
