The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 11

Let’s park the disappointment of last weekend’s penalty miss and captaincy failure and be thankful for Mohamed Salah.

On a day largely bereft of significant Fantasy returns, the Egyptian’s contribution to Liverpool’s 4-1 victory at West Ham was gratefully received by his 1.9 million owners.

What’s more, Salah was once again among the most captained, repairing the damage of Gameweek 10’s modest four-point return for 250,000+ who handed him the armband ahead of today’s deadline.

His 15 points provides further evidence to confirm his status as a midfield “heavy hitter” in what is, to all intents and purposes, his debut Premier League campaign.

His two calmly executed finishes at the London Stadium, coupled with maximum bonus points, took him to 72 for the season.

That elevated Salah above the soaring Leroy Sane at the summit of the overall standings. The German will have his opportunity to reply against Arsenal on Sunday. It remains to be seen if the Man City man can maintain his current rate of output, but you wouldn’t bet against Salah sustaining his.

He is yet to go more than two Gamweeks without a goal and, had he converted the errant spot-kick against Huddersfield, he would be level with Harry Kane in the Golden Boot race.

The comparison doesn’t end there – Kane is the only player to better Salah for shots in the box and shots on target, indicating that his role in Liverpool’s fluid system is that of a striker in anything but name.

Often accused of profligacy, the Egyptian has undoubtedly missed opportunities. But both “eye tests” and statistics reveal a player constantly sniffing out opportunities in the box, while always threatening the possibility of the spectacular.

But lest we forget, we haven’t always been so confident in the Liverpool man.

Back in Gameweeks 8 and 9, there was a lack of faith as some 270,000 managers sold the midfielder. That followed a disappointing blank in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle and Liverpool’s 0-0 stalemate with Manchester United at Anfield.

But those blips are now surely forgotten, and it’s almost certain that those managers have either quickly returned to Salah, or bitterly regret their decision.

Salah is now almost untouchable in our squads and perhaps even edging towards the status of a midfielder that we can truly “trust” with the armband.

On a day that saw Sadio Mane make a shock return to action to play his part in both Salah’s goals, there surely remains no argument.

If we’re limiting our investment in Jurgen Klopp’s attack to one player, Salah is the option to settle upon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What are the key lessons you’ve learned from Gameweek 11 so far?

Here’s a couple to get the discussion started.

    Salah is essential

Ok, I know the e word is incendiary. But as Berbinho’s Forehead said last night “this is Mohamed Salah's world and we are lucky enough to live in it”.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/11/04/the-knee-jerk-gameweek-11-2/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_16895042

Here’s why the 9.3m Liverpool midfielder demands your attention.

    4 double digit hauls
    7 goals
    3 assists
    7 bonus points
37.5% ownership – more than any other midfielder
More shots on target than any other player – which smashes the myth that he’s wasteful
Second only to Kane for shots
Only one tough fixture (GWK 13 –CHE) until the end of the year.

So too is a Burnley defender…or two.

None of the Burnley backline or goalkeeper cost more than 5.0, yet they have delivered 5/11 clean sheets and a combined total of 23 bonus points.

They also have an incredible run, making a Burnley defensive double up potentially very lucrative. Only Arsenal at home looks tough in their next seven and given the Gunners away form even that looks profitable.

What are your key lessons and do you agree that Salah and/or a Burnley defender/gk is essential?

Newcastle, Brighton and Burnley will keep clean sheets.

      Leicester will score goals.

      Salah is the man.

It's taken you until GW11 to realise that about Burnley defenders. A bloke around here has been banging on about Ben Mee for months.

      Ben Mee.

Not me - I've had a Burnley defender since GWK 4....wouldn't go without one.

Sadly though many have still not realised.

Ward the only one of their backline with an ownership above 10%.

Hegazi has almost double the number of owners than the rest of the starting Clarets backline and goalkeeper combined!

Some serious defensive refreshes needed 🙂

re triple up - fixtures get nasty mid december though - so make sure you have an exit plan.

Salah essential yes? I think he's the ideal fantasy player, midfielder hungry for goals as reflected in his shot stats.

Burnley's defender's cheap value coupled with their defensive set up, has made their defenders/gk probably the most valuable players to own in terms of points per million. Hence, I do agree they are a great pick to have given what we've seen from them so far.

I brought Salah in the otherweek with the intention of letting Firmino go. Might keep both now!

I’ve learnt I need to sort my defence out. Double Brighton except Suttner or a double Burnley would sit well on the bench over Xmas. I own two already Suttner and Long but the wrong options!

Salah is essential - especially now that Mané’s back. Once again, Mané is there to slalom through a static midfield and find Salah in space just inside the box. It was a wonderful combo to watch against West Ham.

Salah is essential at the minute...though if Mane starts firing again, he's also 9.3 currently (as is one Deli Alli now). The whole "which Liverpool mid to own" problem will come back sooner rather than later.

Double Burnley def looks a no-brainer...I've bought in Pope to compliment Mee...replacing Fabianski.

With so many cheap defenses keeping clean sheets (BUR, HUD, BHA, NEW, BOU...) it's difficult to make a case for having any premium defenders. I have one currently (Azpi, plus Jones and Maguire at just over 5m)...considering trading down Azpi to a cheap defender to put more money into midfield.

      Choupo Moting is a legend...sadly I benched him 🙂

Huddersfield: 5 CS out of 11, same as Burnley. Loads of people with Zanka, Lowe and Lossl in their teams.

Newcastle: OK, not as many CS, but they are defensively solid, and top half of the table as a result (cos they ain't scoring goals that much)

Bournemouth: yes, they were crap at the start of the season, and also gone through some bad fixtures. However they have tightened up defensively (limited Chelsea to a single goal, kept a CS away yesterday). And given their glorious fixtures, more CSes are just around the corner. They're certainly not a relegation battling team...they'll be mid-table by Xmas.

So yeah, I'd put HUD, NEW, and BOU firmly in the "cheap and desirable defence" category.

Spending 6m+ on premium defs just seems unthinkable currently IMO.

          1. Cok3y5murf
            • 7 Years

Why look at total clean sheets alone for Huddersfield? They kept 3 from their first 3, but that was a long time ago and most people didn't own them then. Just look at their last 5 games. 1 clean sheet, have shipped 10 goals in them. Nothing to suggest they're worth investing in, if anything it suggests the opposite.

Newcastle were shite last night. Bournemouth deserved to score.

With Bournemouth, you're just speculating. Southampton had the best fixtures and have been useless. Fixtures alone won't get you clean sheets.

Not saying these three teams will certainly be bad options but no way have they shown enough to say they're better options than premium defenders who are set-and-forget.

In case case of Huddersfield, their last five games includes games against Spurs, United and Liverpool...not exactly condusive to CS.

In the case of Burnley, their only hard game in the last five was City, and they lost 3-0. The other 4 were against sides in terrible form (Everton, Wham) and two goal-shy teams (Newcastle and Southampton). So it makes Burnley look good.

Come the season's end and when everything's averaged out, I'd say Burnley will have the better defensive record, but Huddersfield probably won't be far off it.

As for premium defenders, who is actually fire-forget currently? United/City perhaps. Spurs you'd need to be looking at Vertonghen currently...too much fullback rotation. Chelsea overpriced for the most part. Wouldn't touch Arsenal with a bargepole.

I’ve had good results with a Choupo / Ward rotation.

Anyone notice how Choupo consistently gets points at home? Last 3 home games he has assists (returns in 4 out of 6 home games since the start).

Burnley starting to get results away has slightly spoilt that rotation but I’m not complaining as I can’t always rotate them when others have bad fixtures

Lot depends on your OR. If you are near the top Salah is now an absolute no brainer - even for me.
But if lower down you gotta think Mane punt or if you really want to save cash Cout when fit.
It's a given pool are on a different level with Mane involved but Salah might just edge it as an FPL option.

      Lesson for me:
Ignoring Salah could prove disasterous (went Cout to Alli insted).
Vardy is not the answer for the third striker spot.
Should have went with Pope instead of Fabianski in hindsight and doubled up with Ward.

Salah is the key to Liverpool.

And that average teams, when playing with one another, have a great potential of clean sheets. 50% clean sheets last night in those 4 games. I value forks over fixtures but if one can find a series of fixtures avoiding top teams, one should choose defensive players immediately. So B'mouth is essential in my view..

      Sunday night additions:

      - Richarlison Scores Away
      - The Man City merry go round is worth assessing over a 2 or 3 week period, not a single Gameweek in isolation.

Nice move. When i owned Mee, Ward was outscoring him by a fair bit.
Then, on my wildcard, i got Ward for Mee, caught his double price rise, but now Mee is outscoring Ward by a fair bit. But, that's fantasy PL.

Do these five players justify using my wildcard to sort my defence? Or switch Firmino>Lukaku and deal with it week by week? I’m happy everywhere else!

Suttner means I’m playing with no spare defender when Davies doesn’t start so that should be a priority. Really want to keep my wildcard for the Xmas run-up though!

This week is going to turn into those who do own Salah and those who don't in terms of overall rank positions gained...just like a couple of weeks back it was those who had spurs defenders and those who didn't.

I can't believe how badly firmino is playing. I'm also now thinking of just getting mane in, instead of finally joining the Salah bandwagon. Although that could easily backfire
