The Watchlist Updated – Defenders

After checking in on the latest movements among the goalkeeper standings in our previous Watchlist review, we now turn our attention to the defenders.

Our Watchlist rankings can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

They give an indication of our thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

Having emerged from a difficult run of matches with two clean sheets and four bonus points, Manchester United’s Phil Jones (5.5) retains his spot at the top of our current rankings.

With the short-term schedule (NEW BHA wat) now obliging, he is expected to add to the eight clean sheets and eight bonus points accrued so far.

Newcastle United are without a goal in their last two matches, and should provide the ideal opposition for Jose Mourinho’s side to get back on track following the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.

One of only four outfield players to start every league match for United, Jones continues to be rested for their midweek cup matches. He is the second most bought since Saturday’s deadline, attracting over 93,000 new owners.

Having conceded fewer goals (five) than any other side, backing the Man United defence should continue to prove profitable. Indeed, there’s even an argument for doubling up with goalkeeper David De Gea, who is now only 0.2 more expensive than Jones.

With rotation at wing-back now a major factor for Spurs, Jan Vertonghen (6.0) is on the rise ahead of a kind run of fixtures.

The Belgian, who’s been an ever-present for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, took maximum bonus points in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

He registered 11 clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), five successful aerial duels and four tackles won in a dominant individual display.

Given that Toby Alderweireld (6.0) is struggling with a hamstring problem, Vertonghen’s security of pitch-time looks key over a hectic winter period.

Sitting fifth among FPL defenders in the Bonus Points System (BPS), he is always likely to be in the mix for bonus should Spurs continue to grind out low scoring wins at their temporary home.

That was Spurs’ third clean sheet in their last four at Wembley, and bodes well given how favourable their upcoming home schedule (WBA STK BHA SOT WHU EVE) is.

Trips to Leicester City and Watford also look reasonable as Spurs look to add to the six clean sheets picked up over the opening 11 Gameweeks.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6.7) enjoys a hike up our rankings after climbing to the top of the FPL defender standings.

Confidence has been restored in the Chelsea backline following the return to fitness of key midfielder N’Golo Kante – they’ve registered shut-outs in four of the last six matches he has started.

Indeed, the champions conceded 2.0 big chances per match when Kante was out injured, compared to just 0.7 when he was in the side during their opening seven matches.

The fixture list is very kind for the Blues from Gameweek 14 onwards (SWA NEW whu hud SOT eve BHA STK) in particular, while Azpilicueta also boasts strong attacking potential, with his five assists more than any other FPL defender.

However, we’re wary of dismissing team-mate and long-time Watchlist favourite Marcos Alonso, who continues to lead the way for goal attempts and is just 0.2 more expensive. Further indication of his increased threat and confidence could see him oust his compatriot on our next update.

Favourable short-term fixtures (HUD swa BUR SOT cry) are a major factor behind the rise of Charlie Daniels (4.8), who highlighted his attacking potential by producing three shots and two key passes in the 1-0 win over Newcastle.

That may have only been Bournemouth’s second clean sheet of the season, but having conceded just three goals in their last five, they enter this promising run in good shape.

Following a fourth shut-out from their last six matches, Burnley’s Stephen Ward (4.9) continues to garner plenty of Fantasy interest.

The Republic of Ireland international remains the top among FPL defender for points per million value, and has the schedule (SWA ARS bou lei WAT STK bha) to retain top spot.

He’s already matched last season’s one goal and assist and has accrued more than double the bonus points (seven versus three) from 2016/17 already.

Ward is just edging out centre-back Ben Mee (4.5) in our thinking, although this could change very soon. Ward did have the edge for BPS over the opening Gameweeks, but a recent decline in his key passes has allowed Mee to gain the advantage. We continue to monitor the numbers and may well revise our selection following Gameweek 12.

There’s also a strong case to consider goalkeeper Nick Pope (4.5), who is averaging a staggering 5.6 points per match, compared to 5.1 for Ward, thanks in part to his save point potential.

While he’s still yet to open his account for the season, the goal threat of Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann (4.7) could soon profit from a fantastic run of fixtures (EVE STK bha wba BOU WAT lei swa).

He now leads all FPL defenders for penalty area shots, with 12, and priced very kindly, could prove to be a fantastic differential option given his mere 0.5% ownership.

But the extent of his appeal could be hit by the fact that Julian Speroni (4.0) has started the last four matches, and now looks to be a viable option alongside Newcastle United’s Rob Elliot (4.2) as a budget pairing between the sticks.

Heading in the opposite direction is Manchester City’s Nicolas Otamendi (5.9), who will miss the Gameweek 12 trip to Leicester City due to suspension, after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in the 3-1 win over Arsenal.

But with a visit to Huddersfield Town and home clashes against Southampton and West Ham United to follow, the Argentine’s 18% ownership may be inclined to hold.

Value is central to the appeal of Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno (4.5).

The Reds have only conceded once in five home matches, and see Southampton, Everton, West Bromwich Albion, Swansea and Leicester all visit Anfield before the turn of the year.

The Spaniard also benefits from Jurgen Klopp’s apparent lack of faith in Andrew Robertson, with the Scot having failed to feature in the league since Gameweek 5.

Further down the ladder, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Shane Duffy (4.5) remains a solid option, with the Seagulls full of confidence having gone four matches without tasting defeat.

Impressively, no team have given up fewer big chances over the last four Gameweeks than Chris Hughton’s side (three).

The centre-back also offers strong attacking potential, firing nine efforts inside the box so far. And Duffy is the number one defender for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), which boosts his potential for additional returns via the BPS.

Harry Maguire (5.1) provided another reminder of his attacking prowess with an assist in Leicester’s 2-2 draw with Stoke.

The Foxes have made a promising start under new boss Claude Puel, and fixtures against West Ham, Burnley, Newcastle, Southampton and Palace in the next seven suggest that can continue.

A consistent source of points, Maguire has produced either attacking or defensive returns in six of his 11 Gameweek starts, and shouldn’t be discounted despite his slightly loftier price tag.

As it’s quiet I thought I’d get an opinion of my team going forward:

    Elliot Pereira
    Jones Daniels Mee Wimmer Honeymonster
    Salah Silva Sterling Choupo TCarroll
    Kane Aguero Morata

Main concerns are upgrading 2nd gk & defence for the upcoming festive period. Might look at Silva to Pogba once Pog is back, and hoping RLC becomes a good 4th mid option to raise the funds

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Which defenders are on your watchlist?

How is your backline going into Gameweek 12 and the congested winter schedule?

Why players are you looking to bring in?

And what allocation of your budget are you looking to spend in defence?

Are the days of heavy hitters gone? Or is there still strong value in the likes of Azpiliceuta?

Will budget gems from Burnley, Brighton and Bournemouth let us down?

Done my defensive transfers for the Christmas period already but looking towards coverage for Spurs/Chelsea as they have great games coming up and instead of risk Christensen, I will go for a Spurs CB and opt go for Courtois instead as he's nailed.

Would be around 24.5 spent on my defence with 3 budget defenders from Burnley, Brighton and Liverpool.

I am going cheap attacking played daniels, moreno and ward.... Then Jones is essential and a 5.5-6m with good fixtures

I don't think we need to invest as much in defense as last year because we don't have a team always getting clean sheets with only expensive defender.

The lack of Alonso has made if difficult unless Davies gets back up and running

Feels like its better to add defenders from top sides and concentrate more on attack... But then, adding cheap defenders enables some quality attack.

That 5-6m bracket looks dry at the moment

                Otamendi, Jones, Mee, Duffy, Wimmer.

I think Mee and Duffy are nailed throughout the winter, Wimmer seems to be becoming more nailed although I don't entirely trust him to play each week yet. Jones will be rotated, Otamendi might be, although I don't think as much as Jones.

I think I should get 3 starters out of the 5 each week, barring injuries and suspensions of course. Don't see any reason to change any of them over the winer period.

Think Scott Dann is a real sleeper pick. Always a threat from set pieces and Palace looking more resilient under Hodgson. Considering a double up with Speroni on my WC.

WC last week and did this. Am playing both Speroni and Dann this week, but now looking at my team selection the CPL defensive double up is rather unsettling... holding my nerve though.

Haven't decided which direction to go in yet regarding premium defenders or not. Gonna save a free next week and hope it's clearer going into gw14.

Simpson and Christiansen are on my watchlist though. Dann and Vertonghen too. Watford..

phil jones and a burnley defender are as close to "essential" for the price in my opinion. wildcarding into duffy and charlie daniels too. azpi would be great but using my budget up top and in midfield.

ones to keep an eye out for: ben chilwell and christensen. if they both start regularly, id be rushing to get them in.

Wildcarded last week and now happy with: Jones, Otamendi, Daniels, Mee and Dann.

May shift Otamendi to Vertonghen. But likely to play 4 at the back over coming weeks as Daniels, Mee and Dann all have goal threat plus good fixtures with CS potential.

When they're at home will struggle to pick RLC or Abraham over them as I know these are budget defenders with the potential for double digit hauls.

Òne big (Azpi), one medium (Jones bought at 5.2), then 3 nailed on starters at 4.5m or less for good defenskve teams with promising fixtures (2x Brighton, 1x Burnley to go with Pope). Nice spread of cash (with keepers costing 8.7 total) and a balance of expected clean sheets, assists and the potential odd goal here and there.

Chelsea, Spurs and United defenders - pick any 2.
                Moreno from Pool.
                2 of Daniels/ Mee/ Ward/ Dann.

Currently own 4 from the above and will probably bring in Trippier or United defender in December for Stones/ Azpi.

On a WC, and have Jones, Azpi and then a rotating trio of Dunk (or Duffy), Moreno and Mee (double up with Pope on easy fixtures, spread the risk when not)

Mee, Daniels, Stones, Dann - Kola going.
staying away from top defenders - either rotation risks or not value for money.
One of Pope or Elliot to DDG - fixture switch GW14 makes them a bit unattractive and DDG pretty much nailed.
started with an expensive defence which has been brilliant for me but budget mids starting to now.

                Watchlist: Daniels, Dann, Christiansen

Currently have 4 nailed starters and Mbemba. I will likely downgrade Kolasinac to afford an extra starter.

Looking to bring in: Mee, Daniels

Azpilicueta is doing well, but not sure he will be worth the 6.8M he will cost after IB. For that sort of price I want defenders who have pens (like peak Baines) or have the attacking threat of last season's Alonso.

With Mustafi coming back I think after the NLD Arsenal have a run of very appealing fixtures for CS.

Being overlooked, Bellerin and Kolasinac are nailed wingbacks.

I have wild carded this week and have so far picked the following:

                Jones - Azpi - Mee - Daniels - Wimmer.

Thinking Wimmer could easily be replaced by Dunk (Stoke only have 2 CS this year) but I can't see a better value GK at 4.5 than Ryan (other than Elliott). Thus I don't think doubling up on Brighton is safe (no offence!) Think Speroni is still an unknown entity for the next few weeks so selecting him could be risky.

                Have a back line of
                Davies Monreal Jones Tarkowski Daniels.

Azpi is the only premium I’d be interested in atm but just can’t squeeze him in without downgrading elsewhere.

Davies is an issue. Not so much in that he might not play, I’m happy with the cover I have, but rather that he may come on in the last minute for a 1 point cameo as per last week.

My defence currently is Bavies, Stones, Yoshida, Lascelles, Mbemba... Poor, I know... I am struggling not to WC since the rest of my team is OK and I do not want to WC only for my defence. I am trying to save it for GW 15/16.

My intention is to keep Stones and Bavies. With the latter, I am taking a risk. I believe he will continue scoring.

Daniels does not convince me. We get defenders for primarily clean sheets. And an improved statistics does not change the fact that B'mouth has an awful defence this year. No other team conceded more efforts in the box.

I am thinking of Yoshida+Lascelles to Jones+Mee for a hit. Or, perhaps, one by one. Burnley convinces me. Other than that its Spurs, ManU and City who will continue clean sheets. So 3 good defenders from each team and 2 budget defenders should do well enough...

                I am thinking of

I currently have Bavies, Azpi, Maguire, Jones and Hunemeier.

Unlike many I am hanging on to Bavies who I think barring injury will play against ars and WBA which are great fixtures considering he averages 9.5 ppm away from home and then faces an impotent WBA attack.

I'm benching Maguire this GW. If I had a FT I would have swapped him for Mee or Daniels or Dann but apart from the Spurs match he has nice fixtures too. He has only scored once this season but that was a 15 pointer and I fancy a couple of repeats.

I got Azpi at 6.5 and he has delivered so is going nowhere as are Jones and Hun (team structure).

If I do decide to lose Maguire or Bavies in 2 weeks time then Christensen, Mee and Dann are top of my watchlist.

                1. bench boost for every gamew…

Thank you. I've kind of accepted that I will occasionally only field 10 players.

I've got a good TV but with a front 3 or Kane, Kun & Morata and Sane, Sterling & Richarlison in midfield i've had to compromise on my 5th def. I can get cheap playing mids for 4.5m which is only 0.2m more than the minimum spend on a midfielder whereas to replace Hun with Mee is an extra 0.6m which i'm 0.2m short of. Obviously i'd rather have Carrick and Mee than Hun and RLC but I need to raise 0.2m first and even then i'm not sure it is worth 2 transfers.

This game is so fickle. 4 weeks ago people on here were raving about defenders and playing 4 each week is the way to go this season.

A Brighton defender looks a must. Two Burnley look a must too.

Then you have Jones and Bavies who I may as well hang onto.

As I have The Pope, there is no need for DDG.

5th defender might be a Newqy given Rafa's defensive mindset.

Likewise Bournemouth defenders 2 CS in 11 is not good enough if you're spending 4.8+

imo having at least 2 possibly even 3 premium defenders is the way to go , its telling that after just 11 games only one player from non top 6 clubs is in the top 10 points scorers for defenders , that trend seems certain to continue for the rest of the season , by which stage you could be easily talking about a 100+ point difference between having 3 premium and 3 cheapo starting defenders , which is huge

My WC GW 10 and current back line is

Otamendi Mee Dunk Kiko and Gomez

The only other DF's i'm currently looking at are Azpi, Daniels, Jones & Vertonghen.

Gomez & Otamendi will most likely be the ones to make way should rotation become a factor come the Xmas period.

Mee Dunk Kiko are all nailed and cheap as

For prospective transfers for GW 13 (forget about any permutations), how does this look?

Jesus, Chalobah, Naughton > Niasse, Sane & Alderweireld (-4).

I find Zaha and Ramsey both less value than Richarlison or Gross, so I’m not shopping in that price range. I also think both of those particular players are tear your hair out annoying to own. I have Tammy over King for value and what it allows me to do elsewhere in the squad. It is possible he becomes Wilson (King too expensive) but that seems like a move that is still some time away if at all.

I think Bavies is first choice for the big games and should play vs Arsenal. So happy to have lascelles (vs United, and would have been on the bench anyway) and Ota (who I want after his suspention) on my bench this week. But agreed Bavies needs to go at some point, just think now isnt the time. I'm not sold on Chelsea and also want to wait and see how much game time Christiansen gets. If he becomes nailed, I would prefer him over the price of Azpil. Plus I really want Sane and can't go with owning both Jesus and Kun anymore.

I'd do it or if possible would spread it over 2 GWs.

Daniels/Mee and DdG this week and the other defender next GW.

I have done Foster to DDG. I have Jones too, the thought of getting 12+ points for every United clean sheet is very enticing, especially for a cost of 10.7.

I am also looking at Cedric to Daniels or Bavies to Azpi/Valencia for a -4. I just cant decide if its worth a hit

Fair enough. The thing with Courtois is that he's doesn't seem likely to get bonus or save points at the same rate as DDG or Pope, so there will always be a deficit to Azpi (but then he is 1.3m cheaper)

There isn't one. 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 with 3 big strikers up top is most popular I think.

I think this season we’ve finally moved beyond rating one particular formation intrinsically better than any other. You just want to have a team of all starters and then you figure it out depending on the week. I played 343 last week but looked at match ups this week and switched to a 352. I think we just need to be pragmatic and flexible like that in order to deal with the non templately and rotational nature of this season.

I don’t think you need Kane and Kun. Just one of them paired with Morata. Downgrade the third striker slot to a value option and pump that cash into an upgrade of your 3rd midfield position and goalkeeper.

Chelsea have great run of fixtures coming up so Morata could be great, but first option improves defence and gives more cover in the event of injuries/suspensions/rotation as congested period of games comes up

              current team is:
              foster
              azpi/jones/davies
              salah/sane/sterling/gross/richarlison
              kane/vardy
