Scout Notes – Aguero Rescues City Win

Pep Guardiola rests Sergio Aguero but is forced to turn to the Argentinian to provide a narrow victory as the league leaders are given a fright by a superb Bristol City performance.

Manchester City will take a narrow advantage to Ashton Gate in the second leg of the Carabao Cup as they battled to a 2-1 win over their Championship opponents.

Conquerers of Manchester United in the Quarter-Final, Bristol City excelled at the Etihad Stadium.

A rash challenge in the box by John Stones, following an error by the shaky Eliaquim Mangala, presented the Championship side with the lead. An offer gleefully accepted by the Robins’ Bobby Reid.

But the Premier League leaders rallied with a second-half strike from the ever-impressive Kevin De Bruyne, who ran from deep before exchanging passes with Raheem Sterling to hammer home.

It was left to Aguero to provide the winner.

City’s all-time record goal scorer started the evening on the bench as Guardiola made four changes from the side that saw off Burnley in the FA Cup third round.

Both David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi were rested from the squad, while Ederson, Kyle Walker, Fabian Delph, Fernandinho and Aguero were kept in reserve.

De Bruyne returned to the starting line-up, with Yaya Toure, Bernardo Silva and Eliaquim Mangala also getting the nod.

Guardiola opted to start Sterling in the central role, with Silva and Leroy Sane up in support from out wide. Toure attempted to shield the defence in Fernandinho’s absence, but looked ponderous and lacked the incisive passing of the Brazilian.

Sterling also failed to adjust to his new position as he dropped deep to run with the ball rather than live on the shoulder of the defence. The experiment failed to spark and, after 30 minutes, he was shifted wide with Silva taking up the central role. Arguably, he was even less effective.

With City struggling for a cutting edge, Guardiola was forced to turn to Aguero on 70 minutes and he duly popped up with a late winner, heading home Silva’s centre in stoppage time.

The decision to rest Aguero was significant, underlining the fact that Guardiola will be forced to protect his only fit senior striker in light of the injury to Gabriel Jesus. Indeed, post-match the City coach confirmed his thinking behind the decision.

“Sergio has played a lot of games. Gabriel is not fit. We have to protect him a little bit and now he is on fire, scoring goals. All his life he has been scoring goals.”

While there continues to be speculation surrounding City’s interest in Alexis Sanchez, there is no question that Aguero will be prone to rest and rotation leading up to the first leg of the Champions League tie with Basel on February 13.

City have seven fixtures before that tie and it seems unlikely that Aguero will be named in the starting line-up in all those matches. It remains to be seen whether Guardiola goes without Aguero for the second leg with Bristol City. Given their narrow victory and the Robins’ away goal, that now looks a gamble. It would also likely mean starting Sterling – either as his central attacker or at least in the starting line-up – thus limiting when he can be rested during this period.

The second leg at Ashton Gate is three days after the Gameweek 24 home meeting with Newcastle. Similarly, Gameweek 25’s Etihad Stadium clash with West Brom could be followed just three or four days later by an FA Cup tie with either Cardiff or Mansfield.

There’s no question that Guardiola’s approach to Aguero’s selection in those domestic cup ties will be vital to his prospects of starts in those potentially profitable home fixtures. And if he goes without Aguero in the cups, this could then put strain on his other attackers, like Sterling, that could then lead to rests in the league matches.

Should Sanchez sign, though, the situation regarding City’s attack will clearly need a revision by Fantasy managers. The Chilean is eligible to play in the Champions League, which could help Guardiola to manage Aguero’s domestic minutes more effectively.

The situation is perhaps clearer and more reassuring in defence, with Otamendi and Walker seemingly the players identified by Guardiola as worthy of preservation. Both will surely start at Anfield on Sunday and, going forward, they seem certain to be rested in at least one of the two remaining domestic cup ties to keep them available for league action.

The Gameweek 27 meeting with Leicester City – just three days before the Basel tie – remains the rotation hotspot, however. Guardiola’s selection for that match will be the source of much anxiety.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

One, Two or Three In Attack?

Given Sergio Aguero looks rotation free in the league, for now, and the pool of third strikers continues to run dry what are your frontline plans for the coming Gameweek and beyond.

Are you looking to bolster your attack and go for a three man forward line. If so why and which players do you like the look of?

Or do you favour a five man midfield with just two or even only one striker?

Planning on going with two: Kane and Kun. If someone cheaper emerges (hi Tosun!) its easy to swap.

        Exactly this.

Can become 451 easily too if I want to add Sanchez, Hazard or KDB

So I have Kane Kun and Ayew (was DCL).
Going with 1 big hitter is risky as if he gets rotated or injured you are left with utter dross.
Going with 3 takes up too much cash.
Given we have the untouchable Kane and the now potentially rotation free Kun these 2 are the obvious choices for me.

I am still happy with my one and only Kane (partnered, somewhat poorly, by Diouf and DCL). If I want to upgrade to Agüero, I have to give up on my Salah, Sterling, Pogba, Lingard, Hazard. I do not think Agüero will be better value than any of these, except Hazard. All others, I am happy to keep. So, I believe that still, a 5 man midfield is better and there are many options in midfield.

      I'm keeping an open mind.

Currently there are too many midfielders I want so a five man midfield looks good for me.

So currently I favour two - but that could change should the next Cisse emerge.

Kane and Firmino for me...reluctant to switch Firmino (swa) for Aguero (NEW) in GWK 24 currently, but that may change.

Don't switch Firmino before Swansea ... he scored 5 goals and got 1 assist last 3 games against them.
May be back on penos now too and a bonus magnet too ..
His form away from home is much better and we have swa A then Hudd A (Tot and City in between , I think those will be an open goals games) .

Yes us DCL owners need to find an exit plan soon - either upgrade and go three up top or downgrade to Quaner or Crouch and keep them as bench fodder.

Last night on the Scoutcast we talked about Ibe being a respectable RLC replacement. 4.8 and with v strong underlying stats.

I went with the Quaner bench fodder option.

I also think spending a bit more on Doucoure for the 5th midfielder spot could be worth it. Especially with Watford’s fixtures turning

yeah I watched the scoutcast last night and noticed the stats Ibe was producing and seems like he is a solid rlc replacement. Ideally the replacement I bring in for dcl has strong underlying numbers like ibe but no one interests me at the moment which is a concern. For now I think going with 2 up top is the best way to go whether it be Kane aguero Kane morata Kane firmino or kaneless. Me personally I've gone with aguero but could backfire considering I'm saving my FT this week with problems like dcl rlc and no lingard and no alonso

Gone with two up front. Kane and Firmino.

With a midfield 5 of Pogba Sterling KDB Salah Doucoure.

Since I went strong in midfield I’ve gone from 3 million to 1 million rank (worst FPL season in 8 years of playing)

Hi guys - Been following this great site for a while but a first time poster.

Currently have Kane and Firmino. Kun is always tempting but thinking about that next
week when I have 2 FT. My current team is:

      Gomes (Elliot)
      Ota Alonso Zanka Kenny Ogbonna
      Salah Sterling Son Lingard Arnie
      Kane Firmino DCL

Any thoughts? Thought of bringing in Mahrez for Arnie as well given his great form. Thanks!

I've been pondering Mahrez myself. He's been performing great but there's always that suspicion that he's at his most productive around transfer window opening times. I'd like to bring him in but waiting to see if he gets a move. And if not will he continue this good form? For now Arnie is doing great for me, nailed in the team and OOP often.

Going with Kane and Wilson / Depoitre and playing 352 or 451.
      Allows a back 9 of:

4-4-2 for me, with Kane and firmino up front and 3 premium defenders. Its a nice balanced formation with good flexibility so planning to stick with it for now.

If firmino is banned or loses form though then I'll be looking to downgrade him, not upgrade him. Probably to Wilson or Murray who look the best of the budget strikers at present.

But I keep an eye on :
      - Tosun : wait and see
      - Niasse : depending on the club he signs for. If it's west ham I could totally double with Arnautovic or Lanzini considering their fixtures

I don’t think Aguero is worth the money. I’m still not convinced he will play week in week out. Pep could easily play a false 9. I wouldn’t have confidence putting the captain armband on him and then add the potential of Sanchez and him sharing minutes. Not for me (just yet).

Current I have Kane, Morata and DCL (bench) but playing 5 midfielders. I may actually upgrade DCL to likes of Wilson just so my bench prepared for those mini BGWs coming up.

Looking to get in Kun with either swap of Firmino-> Aguero
or going all out attack with front 3 of Kane+Kun+Firmino.

      Midfield is: Salah/Sterling/Lingard/Alli/Son
      Def is: Alonso/Jones/Christ'en/Otamendi

So may be I'll have to downgrade 2 or 3 of my premium def/Mid to fit in Kun for Quaner/Bobby. Will require 3 to 4 transfers. Tough.

Going two up top (Kane & Aguero) until the champions league resumes or Jesus returns. Could also be altered if Sanchez signs for City. Means my mid is a bit weaker than ideal (Salah, Son, Arnie, Lingard, Richarlison) but my defence looks solid. Still got wildcard and all three chips to use as well.

Suprised how many are looking to ship Firmino to Aguero. He's matching Aguero for points at £2.6m less with some very nice fixtures coming up.

The situation is not clear and until the dry spell of forwards ends i believe that our teams should be more balanced.I think we should try to be able to pick any formation we want.
That's why i didn't pick a cheap third striker(Quaner) or a cheap fifth mid(Caroll).I have Atsu as my fifth mid and Wilson as my third forward. So i can pick between 3-4-3 and 3-5-2.Of course i can easily upgrade/downgrade Wilson or Atsu and switch formation to something more stable. For sure there are many other options for these positions who can rotate well.
Also the five nailed defenders regardless of price, also gives us the choice to play 3,4 or even 5 at the back.
Neither Kun nor Morata are necessary choices.Morata was really bad against Arsenal and he is clearly out of form. The last time he scored high was against Stoke.Kun from gw6 to gw22 scored high only against Bournemouth.Even if Kun scores against Liv if i don't see him going mad against Newcastle i will not be convinced. Both they most prove they are worth to be in our teams.Until they do that there is no need to destroy our teams.

A starting front three of Kane Jesus Firmino has now become Kane DCL Quaner!

Having already shipped Coutinho for Lingard and being flush with cash I have two options. DCL to Tusan if he’s any good, in a 3-5-2. Or Gross to Mane to preserve my double Liverpool midfield cover and go 4-5-1 with Ogbonna and Mee rotating or DCL/Quaner on occasion. I guess I could also downgrade at the back to get Firmino back in a 3-5-2 but having sold at 8.5 that’s a bit painful.

Not too worried as I’ve got until next weekend to mull it over.

Kun and Kane, and at some point abandon the failed third striker experiment (current clown is Depoitre who may get 8 minutes again) for fodder. Have to watch Kun fixtures/Sanchez and keep a Morata hokey-kokey available where needed.

      Kane Morata.

Morata had 3 golden opportunities vs Arsenal. Yes, he missed, but if they keep carving out those opportunities, he will put them away. One haul away from being a must have with the fixtures on the horizon.

If i got Kun it would be for Firmino, which doesn't scream short term gain given Firmino's form and fixtures

As it's not too long til Kun blanks in 28 and 31, I'm struggling with the math of using two transfers to bring him in and take him (or another of the 4 teams who blank) out

Currently 451 with Kane as lone striker with DCL and Quaner. Was 442 for much of the season, with flex to go 352. Now am thinking of transitioning to 442 again for gw24, with Kane and Kun for short-term, to hopefully capitalize on Aguero's current situation. I have made some money, so can afford a strong back line, four good mids and Kane & Aguero, yet KDB in lieu of Kun is very tempting.

Probably sticking 451 for a while, downgrading Chicharito to Wilson or Ayew (already have Quaner). The caveat being: If Tuson starts well and with EVE upcoming fix being decent, I might well gamble getting him in for Chic and play 352.

Currently on Kane, Morata and DCL.

I'm thinking of doing Morata to Aguero and DCL to Quarner, but I am still not sure about Kun yet.

Besides, I've kept Morata for his rough patch, so it will suck if I get rid of him when he starts firing. Fixtures are still good. If he blanks this weekend as well though, I might just rage transfer him out.

Kane, Firmino, cheapie in a 352/442 formation.
Firmino is brilliant because he gives you an in-form Liverpool attacker in a forward spot, where there's not many options, while freeing up a spot in midfield where there is value and a plethora of options. He is also far better value than Aguero, has been performing better at 3 million less too.

Two premium forwards is OK. Three is too much -- it leads to an unbalanced team, which is not v. good (did it twice this season!).

My intentions are to go with Kane and Aguero after this GW, but haven't decided yet how to involve the City forward. I have to downgrade one of my mids for sure.

Kane and firmino for me. If firmino doesn't perform I will look to upgrade to morata. Not sold on agueros minutes with city's games coming thick and fast.

Aguero and Morata for me, with Ayew as the cheap third striker that I might occasionally play (for example, this week, to bench Choupo-Moting).

I agree with the folks above that Morata will have to start putting away some of these chances. I'm hoping it's no different than what we were saying about Kane earlier this season, but for less money.

Im happy with just 2 strikers kane & firmino for now!

I think kun will do well in next 2/3 GW but d need 2 transfers to get him in & then worry bout rotation with every city teamsheet...

      Playing 442 most weeks.

Bought Alonso and Otamendi to go with my BUR triple up in D.

Kane and Roonpig has been working well upfront until Rooney's injury. Need to get rid of Father Abrahams who seems to have died a death.

I favour 352. I also love the look of Kane Aguero but can’t seem to make it work without downgrading Ota to Stones and alonso to Jones. My MF picks itself IMO, Salah Sterling’s Mahrez Lingard Arnie. The Firmino (current) vs Aguero (want) is plaguing me, and I’m toying with the idea of Mahrez to Milivojevic to enable Aguero but the team looks lacking. Firmino May excel without Cout, or he may flop. It’s a 50/50 in my mind and I can’t call it. It’s fristrating the hell out of me actually. Mahrez transfer rumours are telling me to sell him but the look of my team is telling me to keep him.

Anyone else in a similar position?

Kun is likely to only have a free run for two more league games if the 4-6 week limit is taken for a medial ligament strain. If it doesn't need surgery it is unlikely to be longer than 4 weeks from what I have read and that only gives kun two more gws.

If it requires surgery then it is not a strain but a tear and it would be a totally different injury than we've been told.

          A. Morata to Aguero,

          C. RLC to Lingard,
          D. Son to Arnie, and Mariappa to Alonso (-4), or

That's a tricky one. Kun next week sounds good and Rich has a decent fixture this wee, so I think I'd avoid A. B is tempting, but WHU also have good fixtures and Arnie is playing OOP.

I think it's only a psychological advantage. We feel more comfortable captaining Aguero than KDB - I do anyway. But recently I've started to realise that this may possibly not prove to be correct.

KDB for me, I'm giving Hazard the captaincy this weekend and if he blanks it's a straight swap.

KDB gets those clean sheet points and his bonus points too. If you get Aguero instead of KDB then he has to be captained i think

Reckon first thing that pep does in the morning is stick his head in the crap*er so that he can properly inhale the scent of his own sh*t.
Talking to players after the game and undermining other managers in full view, telling managers from smaller teams they're doing great
after beating them. His patronising behaviour seemingly has no bounds.

He's a dick just like every other top manager.

Some are just more talented than others.

Lee Johnson is the most real, down to earth manager I've seen in years.
