The Technical Area – Martial Under Assessment

After enduring three straight draws against lower-ranking opposition to close out 2017 in disappointing fashion, Manchester United appear to have once again discovered the form that painted them as early-season title contenders.

Since hanging their new calendars, United have reeled off three consecutive league victories – by a combined score of 6-0 – and have restored a sense of optimism around Old Trafford. That has been reinforced by the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.

The catalyst for this recent improvement is clear. The reinstatement of Anthony Martial into United’s starting XI has rejuvenated the side, with the Frenchman frequently serving as the central hub of attacking moves. His pace and guile has provided a directness to United’s attacking play, and his involvement has instantly provided Fantasy dividends: after goals in each of United’s three victories, Martial already looks like one of the form players of 2018.

With Sanchez choosing the red half of Manchester, question marks now surround manager Jose Mourinho’s preferred deployment of his frontline assets. Yet on the basis of recent form, it is impossible to deny that Martial has staked a strong claim for a wide forward slot in their 4-2-3-1 set-up.

While the prospect of Sanchez has piqued the interest of Fantasy managers – potentially enabling the Chilean to take a place alongside Martial and Jesse Lingard behind Romelu Lukaku – it should be noted that United have often excelled this season when designating two holding midfielders to protect the middle of the park behind the roaming Paul Pogba.

In either set-up, however, Martial holds the potential of providing elite-level returns at a mid-level (8.0) price point.

Best just to put decisions on the backburner until after all FA cup games.
1 or 2 key injuries and it will be a lot easier

    1FT and 0.1ITB

    Foster - Elliot
    Alonso - Otamendi - Ogbonna - Duffy - Robertson
    Salah - Sterling - Son - Arnautovic - RLC
    Kane - Aguero - McBurnie

I've got some problems. Arnie and RLC are out. Foster is yellow flagged and McBurnie doesn't play much. Is the following worth a 4 point hit?

    Foster > DDG
    Arnautovic > Albrighton

    Anything else I could do?

In each of the last 2 seasons Kane has got 2 goal in his corresponding 3 upcoming fixtures.
He missed the away Liverpool game last season so that makes it 4 goals from 5 games.

has anyone ever wildcarded this early into the 2nd half of the season before? I normally hold on until the double gameweeks later on in the season but having the likes of Rooney, Lindgard, Arnautovic and big funds tied up in Otamendi, Alonso etc I'm tempted to cash in now and spread the funds around a bit. Downgrading Oto to Stones for Example. This will still leave me with 12 free transfers to use until the end of season to navigate the double gameweeks and can also use the Free chip if a nightmare blank week appears.

I strongly feel its a good time to use it as most people will be targetting the usual players from the top 6 towards the double gameweeks anyway so can gain an advantage now with players before the inevitable price rises.

    Thoughts?

i think it's too early esp with doubles yet to be determined - there's key info that you're missing out on. Plus - of the 5 players you mention, only two of them i would deem to be problematic (Rooney/Arnie) and you could easily take -4 and sort that out if you wanted to, or simply downgrade Rooney as Arnie might not be out that long. I think giving up Ota is a mistake.

But if you're low in OR and want to shake things up and feel that strongly about it, be my guest.

around the 100k mark at the moment and can take a realistic punt that the majority of the top 6 will probably make the latter stages of the FA cup (barring Arsenal) and would want players from the top 6 regardless until the end of the season. I will hold fire until this round of FA cup is over but really fancy taking the plunge this week.

I have wildcarded and have so in tje past also. There's always so much focus on dgw's around this time, people forget there are regular gameweeks to be played beforehand. Planning too far ahead can do a lot of damage and I aim to capitalize on that.

What do we think is behind the decline in form of Lukaku? In the first seven games of the season Lukaku scored 7, and wasn't significantly outscoring his xG. Since then he's managed 4 goals in 15 games (i've exluded his 13 min appearance v Soton), with his xG way down too. Although those first seven games Lukaku was playing against poor defences, he's faced poor defences since and produced little, and certainly no hauls. Is Mikitarian being out the team after those first 7 games a big factor?

After Spurs Lukaku has a great couple of fixtures facing the leaky defences of Hud and New, do we think he could produce the returns he was capable of early in the season, particularly if Sanchez hits the ground running? I'm basically weighing him up as a captain differential for GW26, as an alternative to Aguero for Kanexit. (It would also be without a hit, whereas Sanchez would involve too much team surgery). Is this a differential too far? 😛

      Hello!
He's deffo one rumbling along in the background - don't know whether it's his role as arch-assister or whatever but it hasn't been working has it. No Mkhi to feed him yes could be a factor, but he did make a lot of his goals for himself at Everton without a central creator really to speak of last season (Barkley at times coruscated but wasn't consistent).

I am looking at San(c)hez for that game as I can I do it for a -4 (Arnie to Choupers this midweek, then Ota sacrificed for a 4.8 and Lignard to Sanchez), but I do like the Kaku move on paper.

The ONLY thing with Kaku is the persistent busting of expectations. I've gotten him in, as has Nick, for fixtures where we assumed he's absolutely smash it against smaller teams (GW12 - BOU BHA wat - 1g, 1 a... cheers Kaku) and that didn't materialise. So subjective factors mean I'm not considering it right now.

Kun has a great record against Burnley, too. So I wonder if it is a punt too far indeed...

Hi! No he seems stuck in a sea of single pointers, between 2 and 8 max really. As you say its curious, as at Everton he hauled semi-regularly, as was a safe captain against poor sides. Yeah I'll be watching utd closely over the next 2 games for clues and any evidence of Sanchez performance and Lukaku upturn. Sanchez may well be the better option, Lukaku as a transfer is just a lot more convenient for me.

Good points, cheers. My first thought was Aguero but I quite like exploring the left field options too (often to my own detriment!), may well go with Kun though.

Finally, looking at Lukaku's career in England, his xG for the last 3 seasons are 16, 20, 12 (37 games played each season). Lower than I expected actually, did Utd buy him on the back of a "lucky" season, perhaps?

Could be - I think we forget his age a lot, and the potential which is there to score say 25-30 goals a season domestically which is enough to win titles. Untested on the big stage, but time will tell there - "he can only get better"

Sanchez - many of those engaged in FPL will be looking at him, but the vast, silent majority will not. So I'm quite happy with that as a punt without knowing much else - anything I can take to get up the league I'm on it

Yeah true, it was an investment in potential to an extent.

To be honest I think a lot will be put off by the price, he's certainly been overpriced so far this season so just not on peoples radar. If you have a lot of the "template" covered in other positions, then Sanchez certainly has the potential to be a heavy hitting differential for you 🙂 Hazard performed that role quite well for me for a period earlier in the season.

It's just been a really desultory time as my early template moves which got me the green arrows to respectability have been gradually swallowed up by all still playing. Just hope it improves with doing this kind of move.

Thats true, he is flogged to death. Then again so is Kane, and he seems able to cope. Although Lukaku has been playing top flight football since he was 16, it may be that his footballing age is actually a lot higher than his age, if that makes sense, with all those miles in his legs. Bit like what happenned with Torres and Rooney, for example.

      Got bottomed:

Shaq - takes set pieces, good player, chances of injury/early subs

ECM - same goals as Shaq, 1 less assist, 0.6 cheaper. Risk of starting on the bench.

Allen - currently playing 10, very cheap, chance of regressing to a CDM role

      Any thoughts?

Check Ludo's comments after his Allen post and discount him from your considerations.

Depends what you need - do you need money to enable onward moves? Choupo. Not a problem? Shaq probably the better choice.

Doing Choupo here as a punt to enable Sanchez on the weekend.

      Any objections to:
      A. Kenny Arnautovic > Alonso Milivojevic (-4)?

Also considering (1 FT 0.8 ITB):
      B. Arnie > Mkhitaryan
      C. RLC > Milivojevic
      D. DCL > Ayew

      Pope*
      Jones Christensen* Duffy Ogbonna
      Salah Sterling Son Arnautovic**
      Kane Aguero

      (Elliot Kenny* DCL* RLC**)

Lallana injured again. He has missed more games through injury than Sturridge since Klopp arrived. But don't let that get in the way of anything. He even returned a mighty return of 1 goal and 0 assists in 2017.

Perceptions are different when you're..you know.

So, what does Lucas Moura coming to Spurs would means for Son's and Alli's time in 1st team and what are their owners doing now? Assuming that Eriksen number 10 position is safe coz Moura is winger

It means rotation if he comes. Is it confirmed?

Moura has played just six games for PSG this season - none in the Champions League.

He scored on his first game of the season in a 5-1 win over Metz but has not found the net since.

All six appearances have come off the bench.

I think I'm gonna play my wildcard. My current team is linked. But already on -4 and Arnie is now injured. Thinking of

      Schmeichel, Elliot
      Alonso, Stones, Smalling, Masuaku, Wimmer
      Sanchez, Mkhi, Silva, Salah, Shaqiri
      Aguero, Chicharito, Mcburnie

1.3itb for Aguero to Kane GW28.

      What you guys reckon?

        Different.

A few non-playing players there. I would suggest using the 1.3 and make sure you have 2 FTs in gw28 to easily get kane back instead of just keeping money in the bank.

Dont like defense or attack. And mid has too many unknowns.

Stones not nailed with new defender possibly coming in.

West ham are not keeping any clean sheets. And their 2 best creative players are injured, so chicha looks a bad option.

        Smallimg amd wimmer are meh...

God knows why people are on mcburnie... Surely if you wc now you need depth in your team...

      Better option?

      A) Son, Lingard & Mahrez

      B) Sanchez, Shaqiri & Albrighton (-4)

Will get Sanchez & Albrighton next week.

Yup I think Son & Lingard could also loose their spots with Sanchez coming in and Alderweireld coming back from injury also opens the 343 option for Spurs.

I don't think Lingard looses his spot, rather he becomes less offensive.
Tbf I might get the Ox instead of Shaq

How would you improve this as a WC

      Adrian
      Alonso Mee Maguire
      Sterling Salah Hazard Mahrez
      Aguero Firmino Wilson

      Elliot Carroll Kelly Mbemba

Wilson to Ayew and upgrade either Mbemba or Elliot just so you have another playing bench player.

Hazard is a gamble think I'd rather go debruyne again allowing you to save some much needed money but Hazard does have some nice fixtures.

Tried that with Ayew already and struggling to make the 0.8 count enough on 5th defender/second keeper to justify having him over wilson. Also already have Carroll from Swans and there is no one else to replace him because he is so cheap. Appreciate the feedback!

Think McCarthur at 4.3 is a better option than Carroll.

The 0.8 could be used to go Elliot to Foster (his fixtures do improve and he's at least 1st choice) & Mbemba to either Simpson (Leicester) or Francis (Bournemouth).

Awesome mid and forward line. But that bench is weak. And if you are WC'ing now I would aim to have stronger bench options.

      (Third time lucky!)
      Early ideas...(2FT)
A)Arnie to Mahrez and Save FT
B)Son, Arnie and DCL to KDB, Mahrez and Mcburnie(-4)

First one is safer and allows two freebies next week. That can be so valuable and won't backfire. However think KDB could be gold next few weeks and is nailed which other City assets including Kun aren't. Want two City attackers too and feel he could be somewhat differential ish. Sons position also under threat now and double Spurs over their next three games isn't good. Thoughts?
