Chelsea’s alarming slump in form and confidence takes a new severe twist as Antonio Conte’s side suffer a mauling at Vicarage Road, on a night that saw their key Fantasy asset miss out.

The champions suffered a damaging 4-1 defeat to compound concerns that off-field tensions have affected recent performances.

In Fantasy terms, there was turmoil even before a ball had been kicked with the news that Marcos Alonso – an ever-present for Chelsea this season – would miss out.

The wing-back was absent as a “precautionary” measure according to the club, with a minor muscle injury cited as the reason.

However, post-match Antonio Conte added more detail, indicating that “fatigue” was the main factor behind his absence.

“It’s nothing serious. Alonso is playing every game and we preferred not to take a risk with him because he was a bit tired.”

Alonso should, therefore, be backed for a return in Gameweek 27, particularly with the encounter with West Brom taking place on a Monday night once again.

Alonso’s absence was not to blame for the capitulation; there were many other factors of play, not least the abject performance of midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko who suffered an appalling 29 minutes before picking up a second booking to receive his marching orders.

He’ll now sit out the encounter with the Baggies, though, on current form, he is unlikely to be missed by Chelsea.

Even before the Frenchman’s dismissal, the visitors were woeful and second best to a superb Watford, with little indication that Conte’s side could salvage something from the match.

Hazard finds a way

But, not for the first time, Eden Hazard’s brilliance still managed to come to the fore. Eventually.

He received a David Luiz pass deep in the Watford half before flicking the ball past a defender and curling a superb finish past Orestis Karnezis in goal.

That marked Hazard’s ninth strike of the season, his seventh away from home. The Belgian has now produced four goals and seven bonus points from his last five Gameweeks.

However, the joy from that late equaliser was short-lived, as the Hornets rallied to overrun a beleaguered 10-man Chelsea over the final six minutes.

Looking ahead, Conte’s future at the club seems very uncertain.

Should he remain in charge for next week’s visit from West Brom then we can surely expect Olivier Giroud to earn his debut. He saw 26 minutes of action from the bench on Monday and his introduction immediately released Hazard to find space and, eventually, his goal.

The inclusion of the Frenchman could see Chelsea revert to a 3-5-1-1 or deploy Hazard up in support with one of Willian or Pedro in a 3-4-2-1. It was the latter who gave way to Giroud, making him an early doubt for the Baggies clash.

Andreas Christensen’s re-introduction also looks vital.

The Blues defence – having kept six clean sheets in seven Gameweeks prior to the Gameweek 25 defeat to Bournemouth – were again shambolic without the Dane’s presence. However, it remains to be seen if Christensen can return from a hamstring for Gameweek 27. It would seem unlikely.

Deulofeu inspires Hornets

Watford were just as good as Chelsea were bad and, while it is difficult picking out their star performer, Gerard Deulofeu was inspirational throughout.

He won the penalty for the Hornets’ opener converted by Troy Deeney, before rounding off a superb performance with the final goal himself.

Abdoulaye Doucoure also came away with two assists to claim a third double-figure haul of the campaign, while Roberto Pereyra produced a goal and an assist having appeared from the bench for Richarlison.

That rubbed salt into the wound for the young Brazilian, who had impressed in his 64 minutes but – typical of his recent Fantasy form – came away with another blank.

It’s now five in a row for Richarlison, with his last goal way back in Gameweek 12. Visibly upset by his withdrawal, it’s perhaps significant that Javi Gracia has subbed him on the hour-mark in two successive matches – a fate which he avoided under Marco Silva.

That could open the way for Deulofeu – at 6.0 – to make strides as Watford’s new midfield option of choice. The Spanish winger recorded four shots on goal, three from inside the box, and tied with Deeney on seven touches in the Chelsea penalty area.

Like so many managers, Gracia chose to mirror Chelsea’s formation, opting for a three-man backline. But with Christian Kabasele missing with a hamstring injury, the Hornets brought in Daryl Janmaat and Marvin Zeegelaar as wing-backs, with Jose Holebas and Adrian Mariappa moving to central defensive roles either side of Sebastian Prodl.

On paper, that defence looked likely to struggle against the champions but Watford’s endeavours, coupled with Chelsea’s pitiful performance, ensured that this was never the case.

Gracia can now build on Monday’s stunning victory in three very winnable fixtures. The Hornets visit West Ham in Gameweek 27, before hosting both Everton and West Brom at Vicarage Road. That three match spell could even promote Deulofeu as a short-term differential, particularly as Watford are one of just four teams currently guaranteed their Gameweek 31 fixture, albeit at Liverpool.

Anyone have any thoughts on what to do with this bunch? Not sure I'm keen on Arsenal assets with their two forthcoming fixtures.

    Adrian, Ryan
    Alonso, Otamendi, Ogbonna, Kenny, Mariappa
    Salah, Stirling, Lingard, Chupo, Walcott
    Kane, Firmino, DCL

£3.1m ITB, 1FT - or am I good to save?

Top 5 players to rely on, going forward until GW32.

As we approach the business end of the season it seems rotation of premium players is in full effect. Alonso seemed more rotation last night, Jones and Pogba were surely more rotation than punishment, we expect Otamendi, maybe KDB and Sterling to be rotated too with so many games for City... so are the mid price options going to be better since the premium players will surely be rested in the "easy" games? I'm not talking about 100% cheap/mid prices of course although a lot of mid price players are looking good again, but moving away from a high priced midfield and/or defence.

      Chips strategy going forward.

What are Scouts thinking viz FH, WC, BB, TC. If the popular strategy of WC - 32, BB-34, FH-35, TC-37, then what transfers should we be making now to prepare for GW31.

What about those who have used FH already?

We've got an excellent community article on this from last month - two pages worth of in depth discussion on this subject. Really worth looking at.

We gave it a mention last week and will certainly mention again re GWK 31 but its just too early to come up with firm plans - stay flexible, go yogic is the simple advice and plan for as many eventualities as you can.

We can only go on what we know -and we will know alot more after the next FA Cup fixtures.

Impossible to say which players to target when we don't have a list of which teams will play. Currently we only know a few.

Yep, that was a superb community article and subsequent discussion - very helpful.

If free hitting in 35 (like Ben recommends), transfers for the blank in 31 should have started last week, really. It would be great to have a burning question article on when to play the free hit, too.

      1) Ben Crellin currently favours playing the free hit in GW35 and employing a "boomerang strategy". Should we be using our transfers from here on in to bring in players without blanks in GW31?

      2) What's the best way to respond to Arsenal's empathic win against Everton?

      3) With so few clean sheets around, is time to stop shopping in Waitrose for defenders and load up on a back 5 from the Tesco Value aisle?

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

        1) It seems the mods and scouts don't favour early planning with regards to blanks and doubles. At least that's the impression I get. Would be nice to hear them discuss it this week, but each to their own.

        2) Cautiously

        3) As soon as you do that, the premiums will prove their worth again. But if it buys you what you want elsewhere in the team, then that's a decision only you can make.

In general, I don't like to think in the boxes of Waitrose and Tesco Value. Each player is an individual. E.g. if you think Valencia is the only good value premium defender, then you are only one player away from thinking you don't belong in the Waitrose aisles, yet you can still find your preferred player here and not in Tesco.

Agree with number 1 - they don't plan, then are forced into one strategy, and then spend time blurting out on the Scoutcast (i.e. justifying to themselves) why other strategies are wrong and the strategy they end up with is the best strategy of them all. One of the Scoutcast crew was particular awful for this last season.

In fact the very fact that the HT I was given was called 'Early Planning' instead of just 'Planning' speaks wonders I think.

And the fact that even I (the planner) have now been influenced to label it as 'early planning', too, speaks for the power of headlines and the written word to affect our thoughts. A glimpse into the inner workings of myths and memes or am I overplaying it a bit? Haha

definitely a case for DDG + 1 defender.
Big ownership top 10k for DDG & Jones.
Chelsea a worry - last 2 games been on the cards. Leicester should have beat them at Stamford Bridge. Brighton should have scored - their right back was running Alonso ragged. Conte issues overshadowing the club.
        City rotation.
Case for Spurs with Toby return coinciding with good fixtures.

      1) If we have all our chips is this the best way to use them:

      Prepare for the GW31 blanks
      Wild Card in GW33
Triple Captain or Bench Boost in GW34
      Free Hit in GW35
Triple Captain or Bench Boost in GW37

      2) Is it time for the Kanexiteers to cash their chips in this week?

Kanexit 1.0 was a disaster for those that took part, 34 points v 18 points (68 v 36 with the captaincy making it a 32 point swing). The vast majority would then have brought Kane back for his double game week, which he got 3 points in.

Kanexit 2.0 has been points neutral for anyone who brought him in pre-Newcastle haul, for those after it was another fail.

GWs 24 – 26 with Salah (c) and Kane would have got you 64
GW 24 – 26 with Aguero (c) and Salah would have got you 67.
That’s not including the transfers and any possible hits to get Kane out and back in.

City's fixtures stiffing with Arsenal at Wembley this weekend. Harry Kane has 6 goals in 6 games vs Arsenal and loves the early TV fixture scoring 7 goals in 5 early kick-offs this season

GWs 24 – 26 with Salah (c) and Kane would have got you 64

Point was Kanexit 2.0 happened as people wanted a captain option and Harry Kane had three tough games, yet we we all have Salah in our teams.

Kanexiteers would have been better off just keeping Kane and captaining Salah than waste transfers moving Kane in and out for Aguero.

Mkhi because he will remain the creative force in the team. Ramsey's goal scoring is unsustainable. Mkhi will keep racking in the assists and get some goals as well with the quality around him.

A lot of people on here seem to want to follow other people's dgw and blank strategy. As you and Mark are pretty savvy players will you be following anyone or setting the standards yourself. With my 11 year experience I'm intrested to see what others do but id never follow anyone's strategy as it takes away the achievement

I definitely agree that you should Analyse the situation yourself as well, but still too early with us not knowing who will blank and double.

-Is Alonso's time over? Conte seems to have lost the plot and maybe the dressing room. The fixtures are tough, CL ties with Barca and blanks are also coming up. As a Chelsea defense double up owner, I am considering selling Alonso and moving funds to midfield to jump on the Mkhitarian train in a few weeks.
-How much better your season would be without the temptation to captain Kane or Aguero? Huge points missed by not captaining Salah
-In light of the previous question, should Salah be our perma-captain now? He reached the level of RVP and Suarez in their prime FPL seasons (If not better). He scores when he wants against any team.

A downgrade to someone like Monreal in a couple weeks will free up enough cash to do double moves like Shaqiri > Ramsey & DCL > Wilson.

Could an early WC in 28 to catch the fixture shift be more beneficial overall? It would allow an ok team for 31 and then FH in 34 and boomerang the team back for 35 as a lot of team have a good run from 28-35. Are we falling into the trap of every season where "well it worked last season so it should be fine this one"?

Suarez got 295 in 33 games in 2013/14 (8.9ppg), having been suspended for the first 5 game-weeks.
          Lampard got 284 in 36 matches in 2009/10 (7.9ppg), finishing with 18-10-16 in the last 3 game-weeks.
These are the highest since I started playing FPL.

Salah has 204 in 25 games so far (8.2ppg). If he plays in all 12 of the remaining matches and keeps up that 8.2ppg then he would finish with 303 from 37.

Ronaldo was earlier, so I don't know what his best total was.

        Is 3-5-2 better than 3-4-3?

I'm currently playing 4-4-2 due to having Loftus-Cheek and McBurnie. I'm really tempted to bring in Firmino (home to West Ham and home to Newcastle) and Vardy (home to Stoke and home to Bournemouth) for Aguero (away to Arsenal and home to Chelsea) and McBurnie in GW28, but most of the points are coming from midfield which makes me think I should play 5 in that position.

In GW26, 13 midfielders scored more than 8 points compared to 0 forwards.

Additionally, so far this season, 17 midfielders have scored 100 or more points compared to 5 forwards.

What do you think about VVD?
-Liverpool have very good fixtures, just United and Chelsea away in gw 30 and gw 37 are top six sides they play agianst.
-Lpool playing Watford in gw 31 and is one of just four teams guaranteed not to blank in that gw.
-They are out of both cups and are fighting for CL spots, so they will play every match 100%.
        -Small rotation risk
-Lpool very attacking team, Mo and Mane play a lot 1 vs 1 vs defenders so they will have a lot of set pieces and VVD is their main threat in the air

BGW31 strategy - is it too early to limit / save transfers to those teams that have a fixture in GW31? What are the Scoutcasters current plans for the blank and double gameweeks? Is it accepted that the best strategy is:

        WC GW32/33
        BB DGW34
        FH BGW35
        TC GW37

With everyone assuming that Wk31 will have blanks and 33 have multiple doubles i thought i would raise what could happen?

If we assume the L16 pans out with at least one prem team in each tie. We could then have a quarter final with 8 prem teams.

This would then mean only 2 games would be on Wk31. Would the premier league not then just move the 8 games to midweek and not have one gameweek with 2 games and one gameweek with 18?

In my head this risk means we may only actually have one more double gameweek on 36 for the semis.

        Thoughts?

There'll probably be more than 2 games in GW31, but we won't know for certain till the FA Cup 5th round and replays have been completed and the 6th round draw made.
The average number of games remaining in a game-week that clashes with the 6th round of the Cup is 5.
Some of the games rearranged from GW31 might be played in DGW37 instead of DGW34.
Games rearranged from GW35 (which clashes with the FA Cup semi-finals) will also be played in DGW37.

Is it time FPL updated the rules to allow 2 free transfers per gameweek from next season? This would liven up the game dramatically as I personally feel a bit like a manager who's hands are tied with only 1 free per week. Particularly coinciding with the rise of defenders as increasingly better FPL options, an extra transfer would allow far more ability for managers to mix things up and actually make more decisions, something I feel the current rules inhibit.

The game's better as it is, without them making it too easy for us.
With just the one free transfer per game-week, we have to plan ahead more, and weigh up for ourselves whether additional transfers are worth the cost of taking hits.

Do you think we’re misinterpreting XG? It’s based on 300,000 shots from similar positions so is the probability based on the average player. But I would put this forward: teams like City (and individual players)have a delta that suggests they should revert to a mean. But all this is telling you in fact is that City have individuals far in excess of the average player and so have a mean much higher ... so the true delta is in fact closer to zero.

Salah , Sánchez . Mkhitaryan. Sterling , Milivojevic

Kane , Wilson , Jordan Ayew

I sold Son which I might regret. Also Bench doesn't look too strong.

      Help would be much appreciated.

Don't like Azpi at the back, attacking returns have diminished and the Chelsea CS train is stalling, either Alonso or go cheap and reinvest up front.

Pope + Fabianski might be unnecessary £, I'd pick one + someone cheaper.

        Change Chilwell to Dummett.

If you prefer Flappyhandski in goal I'd get a Burnley defender. There still cheap and have good fixtures.

The rest is a structural preference - I don't like having two cheap strikers because it's awkward to upgrade if Firmino/Vardy or even Giroud are firing. That said Wilson and Ayew look like excellent value for £ in the short term. Still not convinced Sanchez is worth it but he didn't your your team much if playing two cheap strikers.

      Morning all!

I get a fun week of deliberating either Masuaku -> Bauer or Kenny -> Zeegelar.
Members stats show they are pretty much the same.

The template defence has these fixtures in GW28 & 29:

Ota (ars) - Jones (MUN) - Alonso (mun)

Ota (CHE) - Jones (cry) - Alonso (mci)

Might be a good time to get off these players and get some differentials in defence.
