Scout Notes – Mane On The Money

Sadio Mane hits a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Porto 5-0 in a Champions League Round of 16 rout.

Another day, another Premier League team who will have the luxury of resting key players when the second leg of their European tie comes around in March.

Not that Liverpool have too many worries surrounding fatigue at the moment anyway.

The Reds will play just twice before they face Porto again on March 6 – over the same period, Man City have four matches.

Even so, coach Jurgen Klopp will be able to rotate till his heart’s content for that second leg, particularly with a huge Gameweek 30 clash at Man United coming four days later.

With no FA Cup match to play this weekend, Klopp has taken his troops for warm weather training before they resume league action with a visit from West Ham.

Another home match, against Newcastle, follows in Gameweek 29 before Porto visit Anfield three days later. That clash with the Magpies looked to be a rotation hot-spot but that’s no longer the cash after Tuesday’s convincing win.

The trip to Old Trafford will then make it three matches in a week for Liverpool, marking out the Champions League fixture as the obvious place to rest key assets, despite Klopp’s post-match insistence that the tie is far from done.

“I am too long in the business to think anything is sorted before the final whistle. We owe our supporters at Anfield a 100% performance and that’s what we want to deliver.”

Those supporters should forgive him if he fields a weaker team, while Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will be positively demanding it.

Liverpool players are becoming increasingly attractive options, with an excellent schedule involving just three tough encounters – the Man United match, a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and a trip to Chelsea – over the final 11 Gameweeks of the season.

The Reds are also one of only four teams currently guaranteed a Gameweek 31 fixture. They’ll entertain Watford on a weekend otherwise hugely disrupted by the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Form, as well as fixtures, are on Liverpool’s side at present.

Mane’s hat-trick last night caught the eye, although it followed a patchy four-match run in the league in which he’d managed just one assist.

His manager, understandably, was delighted at the winger’s upturn in output.

“He gave the right answer. We met on the pitch after the last game and I said to him: ‘Finally, you are back’. Tonight he showed it again.
He was always important, he was always fantastic for us even in his ‘not that good’ moments. That’s real quality.
If you are not at 100% but still involved in goals that’s really important. Then it will come, if you keep working really hard like he did”.

Mohamed Salah’s goal in Portugal was his 30th in all competitions this season, while Roberto Firmino made it 4-0 on the night to back up a domestic run involving three goals and two assists over his last five starts.

The Brazilian is currently in the top 10 for Gameweek 28 transfers-in, with 52,000+ new FPL managers.

Mane could now prove a hugely effective differential for the forthcoming period. With Salah and Firmino such fixtures in many FPL squads, it seems likely that Mane’s 7.3% ownership will merely simmer. Those with Salah and Firmino are perhaps more likely to fill their third Liverpool slot with a defensive option, therefore overlooking Mane for the spell leading into Gameweek 31.

Virgil van Dijk will likely be that defensive acquisition. He is enjoying only a modest increase in ownership despite the fact that Liverpool have now kept three clean sheets in their last four matches in all competitions.

The 5.5-priced Dutchman is also an obvious candidate to replace Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi (6.4) in many FPL squads.

Owned by 30.6%, the Argentine is due a rest – he’s started all but one league match this season – and City have managed just one shut-out in six Gameweeks. They are also likely to have a blank Gameweek 31 unless Wigan pull off a major surprise in this weekend’s FA Cup tie.

It would be equally surprising if more managers don’t buy into Van Dijk before Gameweek 28’s deadline next Saturday morning, particularly as the make-up of the rest of the Reds’ defence is far from settled.

Klopp opted for Dejan Lovren at centre-half last night, but has used Joel Matip just as frequently in recent weeks, while Joe Gomez returned from injury to be used a second-half substitute. That could well end Trent Alexander-Arnold’s three-match run as the starting right-back when West Ham visit.

Alberto Moreno was fit enough for the bench against Porto, yet Andrew Robertson, who has started the last five Gameweeks, remains in the driving seat for the left-back berth.

The Scottish international was excellent yet again last night and offers as much attacking threat as Moreno, but without the Spaniard’s defensive shortcomings.

Meanwhile, keeper Loris Karius has now started the last six matches in all competitions.

Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and substitute Danny Ings all provided assists in Portugal, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana watched the match from the bench and Emre Can had the night off.

    Ah bum.
Was anyone else hoping Mane would go under the radar last night, maybe just grab an assist?

I still think he'll remain a big differential. I'm not sure all those with Salah and Firmino will go with Mane too, more likely to go with VvD for the third slot. Some might already be locked in with their 3 Liverpool slots too.

        Correct.

    Which scores better this week?

    A) Hazard (mun) and Van Dijk (NEW)
    Possible clean sheet for Liverpool.
Will Hazard do anything against the Mourinho bus?

    B) Zeegelaar (EVE) and Firmino (NEW) and -4
Watford capable of a clean sheet at home to Everton?
Firmino could get a goal or two?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Best Liverpool Assets

With strong form, excellent fixtures and a guaranteed match in Gameweek 31, investing in Livepool assets looks key over the coming weeks.

Which Reds players do you currently own? Which do you plan to get in?

Is a triple attack of Salah, Firmino and Mane the best option? Or is Virgil Van Dijk, Karius or another backline asset a better bet to bring in?

Is three Liverpool playrs too much? Or essential?

    1. Delhidynamo

Robertson or VVD is the question

Most already have Firmino and Salah ready, and don't have space for a third Pool attacker

Salah and Firmino seem to be the nailed options - seems to be a straight choice now between VVD/Karius and Mane - questions for me are a) do people have room for a 2nd Liverpool midfielder, and 3) do we trust Liverpool's defence.

As close to essential as can be. Scoring goals and 3 in 4 of the next at home.

3 Liverpool players seems like a must have really.

They score goals for fun and their defence isn't as bad as made out with 3 nice fixtures in the next 4.

I'm looking at VVD or Robertson most likely but Mane a tempter after last night.

It would be so Liverpool to lose their next game though after such a good win.

        - Liverpool's attack scores for fun
        - Their defence "isn't a bad as made out"?
        - 3 nice fixtures out of 4

I disagree, but I can see the rationale for Mané being essentially essential (if you already have Salah and Firmino).

But I can't see how these points point you to the justification of Mané OR Van Dijk OR Robertson being essentially essential!

I have spaces in defence and none in midfield currently so will look to get VVD in I think.

I don’t think it’s too much. Three plum home fixtures in the next four, two poor teams in Palace and Everton away then you wildcard. Doesn’t seem too risky to me. I’d like VVD too but I’m going with the attackers and their much higher ceilings.

3 Pool players are absolutely essential with gw31 in mind.

Salah and Firmino are the best. There are a lot more strong options in midfield and not many in defense, by this reasoning I think VVD is better than Mane as our 3rd Pool asset.

    15. Sedemuda

I'd argue they're essential with good fixtures & GW31 in mind. I currently have Firmino & Salah & will probably get VVD for Alonso or Jones depending on how they are performing.
Everton have good fixtures as well & am looking to use transfers to triple up on them with GW31 in mind. Already have Walcott & plan on Niasse if he stays as first choice & will add one more.
I'll then wildcard in GW32 if needed.
I've already started making transfers with GW31 in mind which may come back to bite me by ignoring the points I could get from other assets, but I made the decision & am going to follow it through for now.

      My plan:

Not using FHC in gw31, so I will get as many players with matches as possible. Waiting until after this fa cup weekend until making a certain plan on which players.

However, for the third pool player I am willing to wait until gw30 before deciding. Who knows, injuries might come, and Ox might be a regular again. Would rather have a cheap attacking pool option than an expensive or rotation prone defender who might lose CS due to attacking style of play.

Hence, I am pre-gw30 only looking to those other teams. Already got Shaq and Delou, as well as Pickford. The rest will come, but only one quality player a week ^^

I think it mostly depends on where you need to patch the holes in your team.

      I won't consider Karius unless Henessey/Speroni blank in GW31.

I have to sell at least one of Alonso, Azpi, Otamendi and Coleman, which means I'm in the market for a VVD.

Although my midfield isn't beastly, I'm happy that all of them are decent value, so it's not essential that I change it up. However, if Wilshere has no game in GW31, then I could consider Mané as a replacement by downgrading elsewhere.

So the answer to the HT depends on your team (as it so often does). VVD could be a better option for your team even if Mané scores more points than him going forward, since the player you sell (e.g. Wilshere! haha) might be getting hattricks of assists every week! 😉

      ...

On another note, the fact that you're are asking the question, "Is three Liverpool playrs too much? Or essential?" tells you that neither answer is correct. We don't know how many points the players will score, but 3 Liverpool players might improve your team or lose you some points, but it will neither win you the FPL title nor ruin your season. After all, the smallest number of Liverpool players that is too much is 4.

The only time doubles and triples are inherently restrictive (in terms of your lineup and long-term points collection) is when you plan to bench players for poor fixtures in favour of a player with better a better fixture, which of course you can't do with two Liverpool players. Assuming you won't do this with expensive Pool players, this is not a problem, so fill your boots with 3.

Last season I gained 1.05m OR in 5 GWs whilst tripling with Pool players, whilst the FPL winner went the whole season without any Pool players. This tells you the variable routes to making points in FPL. Pool players didn't cause me to gain places, and lack of Pool players didn't cause Ben Crabtree to win the FPL.

      Have Salah and Firmino.

For GW31 I'll play my FH anyway but Van Dijk is the likely one for me.

Mane has not passed the eye test for a long time for me (aside from last night) and rotation could occur.

This could all change this weekend once we know the FA CUP results - or Monday when we'll know the QF fixtures.

As things stand, 3 pool attacking assets makes more sense for GW31

The 6th round draw will be made on Sunday evening.
But the exact line-up won't be known till any replays have been completed.

Salah is the only essential playwr in the game, rest aren't by any means (although ivdonwajt to get Firminho in). Slightly annoyed I have Gomez as would prefer VvD. Not worth a transfer though so just hoping he plays in 31.

I'm doing Lingard>Mane in think. I can get Firmino in for Quaner and bring in a 4.5 mid as I have 2 FTs and switch to 3-4-3 but I fancy someone a bit different. Plus it saves a transfer.

      Possibly VvD in next week.

Easily some of the worst goalkeeping ive ever seen at this stage of the champions league , youd be unhappy with your keeper conceding some of those efforts in your local astro league team let alone at that level. Wrists just aren't what they used to be!

I currently have the Hennessy/Speroni CP GK Combo but their fixtures are awful from now on......SPU MU che hud LIV bou......they are however likely to play in blank GW 31.

1 have 2FT this week so should use 1 to bring in a rotating GK with Hennessy or just roll with the CP GK's, hope for save points and don't waste a transfer?

Mané is not a decision standing on its own, you always need to look at the alternatives on each position and there's plenty of good ones in the midfield, while there's a slight crisis at the back. Mané's been very selfish in the league, we'll see if he's regained his confidence, but I'd rather spread the risk with Liverpool ownership to defence than attack alone.

I think City / Liverpool is the only teams I would not touch defence and could go 3x attackers

Especially with those fixtures Liverpool have for rest of season it's actually not that crazy

Only problem is that if they as a team fail to score, that is 3 key players with at the best 2/3 points. Too risky IMO except for gw31, when most will have 3 pool players. Always 2 attack plus 1 defender for me. VVD does carry an attacking threat so a goal conceded does not mean a poor score. He has solidified there defence a little and given time this should get better.
        Only my opinion.

There are planets of cheap options at the back with good fixtures.

Also this with a settled midfield will feel that they need to get Mane.

For those who have a players to sell Mane is way better than any other mid (except Salah) who is playing GW31 as of now.

      1. Pariße
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

I only have defenders from top 5 teams, which means that every cheap player I buy at the back is a downgrade. At the same time Mané is not an upgrade to KDB, Salah or Sterling and even Shaqiri is outscoring him lately. Makes no sense to sell anyone from that midfield, when the defence is the one that needs to be looked at. Otamendi > van Dijk was the sensible move for me.

    5. I Member
      • 8 Years

When I look at my midfield of De Bruyne, Sterling and Shaqiri (plus Salah of course) there's no one there I would sell for Mane whereas I would happily ditch most of my defenders for Van Dijk or Robertson.

Exactly my point. I'm not losing KDB or Sterling, while Salah and Shaqiri both have a game in 31.

If/when Pool scores there is always a good chance Mane will be involved.

While trying to be a good boy and focus my transfers on those who end up having GW31 fixtures, I have this Sanchez-shaped-boil that needs lancing

OK, he was worth a punt, but Utd and him look bobbins right now and I'm strongly tempted to dicth him - for a hit - for Mahrez.

I'm justifying this idea to myself with the 'rationale' that with Leicester's next 3 he could easily pay off the hit and then some compared to Sanchez

The problem, of course, is that this is Sanchez, who could go abso9lutely mental at any point in time against any opposotion

    So: what's a boy to do ?

With 11 games left in the premier league, and the table being so tight for the top 4 and relegation places, which 3 teams do you think will get relegated, and who will make the top 4?

There could be a very interesting finale to the season, as there are some decent teams in and around the relegation places, and obviously Arsenal and Spurs currently outside the top 4 but with great fixtures from now until the end of the season.

People log on after not having done so for a month or two.
Make two or three transfers and then don't log on again for another minth or two!

Considered Haz, KDB, Eriksen? Maybe even Alexis?
Or Mane your pick due to GW31 blank possibility
