Scout Notes – Gameweek 3 – Monday

Liverpool chalk up a third straight clean sheet after emerging from the Emirates with a goalless draw. Arsenal fail to score at home yet again, with Petr Cech keeping the Merseysiders at bay with a string of vital first-half stops.

Arsenal Stutter at Home Again

Despite boasting nearly two-thirds of the possession (66%) and fashioning 19 shots at goal, the Gunners were unable to breach Liverpool’s unyielding rearguard. Astonishingly, the north London club have now drawn blanks in five of their last six matches at the Emirates across all competitions, which might encourage Arsene Wenger to switch things up for their next home encounter.

In light of Per Mertesacker (illness) and Laurent Koscielny sitting out this encounter, Gabriel and Callum Chambers were drafted into central defence. The former was the only member of Arsenal’s back five not to receive a single bonus point, with Petr Cech claiming the maximum three – the former Chelsea shot-stopper amassed 11 points in all, having rebuffed the Reds’ attacks with eight saves.

Alexis Sanchez’s came close to breaking the deadlock when he clattered the upright from close range following a well-worked move, while Aaron Ramsey’s 6% ownership were miffed to witness his goal wrongly disallowed for offside. Both players will fancy their chances of gracing the scoresheet soon, though, given that they face a trip to Newcastle United and home tie against Stoke City in the next two Gameweeks.

Reds Rearguard Holds Steady

Liverpool continued their unbeaten start to the season after carding a third successive clean sheet. Joe Gomez (4.7) turned out a performance that belied his years, quelling the hosts’ threat down their right flank by virtue of his excellent positioning and impressive recovery speed. On last night’s showing, the ex-Charlton defender looks likely to retain his starting role in the left-back berth ahead of Alberto Moreno, rendering him the most valuable route into the Merseysiders’ defence. Three favourable home ties in the next four Gameweeks (WHU, NOR, AVL) only serve to strengthen his claim for inclusion.

Philippe Coutinho (8.1) fired a rasping strike onto the underside of the crossbar in the early exchanges, before forcing a superb fingertip-save out of Cech minutes before the break. No midfielder has attempted more shots than the Brazil international this term (15), which certainly bodes well for a Gameweek 4 clash against a Hammers outfit that shipped four goals last time out and are devoid of Carl Jenkinson and Adrian through suspension.

Christian Benteke (8.5) spurned a golden opportunity to afford Liverpool the lead in the first period but proved effective as the spearhead to their attack. Given that the other candidates around Benteke’s price tag (Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Graziano Pelle) also blanked this Gameweek, his 40% ownership will feel confident ahead of the above-mentioned trio of Anfield showdowns.

  2. Why team value is important

Fpl transfers and bandwagons are a bit like booking with a low cost airline. Get in early, get 'em cheap, get in late and pay through the nose and no doubt enjoy the experience far less. Most players at this stage are still cheap enough to gain a few 0.1 but in a couple of weeks the likes of Gomez and Mahrez become mid priced and slightly less appealing to new investors (unless they continue their form, which there is nothing to suggest they won't).

    Value seems to be important this year for 2 reasons;

Firstly, a drop seems much quicker to happen than a rise which means getting the risers in early will give quicker profit and mean you avoid the droppers.

Secondly, there seems to be a larger group than in previous seasons of high mid to big gun level players who may (or may not) become essential by Christmas (Alexis, Hazard, Pedro, Costa, Yaya, Silva, Kun, Kolarov etc, etc to name but a few) and only with some canny transfer dealings to boost your coffers will you be able to afford enough of them to stay in touch with the top fpl managers.

This is where the astute seasoned player will come to the fore and rebalance the fpl equilibrium after such a difficult opening to the season.

So the summary of all this; Get your transfers done early, ship out certain fallers (unless you are 100% confident of their pedigree to perform for you) and if you have a good record over the years playing Fpl, then you will find yourself stepping over the casuals before you tuck into your Christmas turkey dinner !

Of course this is not a certain ticket to success but something all those aspiring to top their mini-leagues must consider as "essential" this season?

Yeah spot on. The even more tricky but at least as important part is knowing when to sell

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

Selling the fallers ASAP is key as the profit tax makes price rises have way less upside than a falls downside.

Couldn't agree more. I've been fixated with value this season.

Already done Kane->Wilson because Kane was dropping and Wilson was rising. Just waiting for Gomis to rise before getting Costa in.

Yeah, I'm finding the severity of prices decreases quite interesting. It creates panic selling, lowers prices of genuinely good FPL targets (RuthNZ did a piece on some) and so keeps a whole bunch of players simmering away as kind of next-phase options.

I wonder if there was a hope this might happen. Players from Toon and Palace for example. Bad fixtures to start with, but when fixtures improve many of their players will be .1/2/3 below original start price. Keeps things interesting.

      Top, top post.

For that reason I had no qualms about taking multiple hits these days - it's about getting the right players that will score points and soar in prices i.e Mahrez, Gomez, etc.

That's the reason I wild carded early (GW3), couldn't see the point of holding on any longer with no DGW likely this years. Gained 1.5m in team value by doing it, should pay dividends later in the season.

I'm trying to do it without using the wildcard, with the hope that my enhanced team value will come in handy when splashing out the wildcard later on.
Currently up to 101.2mil but it did take a -8 hit to avoid price drops

How many big hitters do we really want though?

      Chelsea - Costa, Hazard, Pedro
M City - Aguero, Silva, (Sterling + Yaya)
Arsenal - Sanchez, (Other options at 8-9m)

See a true big hitter is 10m or more. I think value can be found in the cheaper alternatives. I'm thinking - Aguero Sterling Pedro Ozil - for example.

I think the real value is in the 8-9m price range. So many options there that I think we can forgo some of the more expensive options such as Hazard and Sanchez etc.

I kind of agree with this and I kind of don't.

I do believe a money strategy is called for. But it doesn't need to be the first priority, you just need to have it as a factor in your mind. Although honestly I would be doing that in the first half of the season anyway.

I bought Wilson in pre-rise this week. But only after making an assessment that showed him to be a decent choice for FPL points over the next period.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/08/23/the-scoreboard-gameweek-3-sunday-2/?hc_page=40#hc_comment_11043540

I wouldn't have made the transfer just for the money. Lukaku is rising too but his fixtures are awful and I won't be bringing him in anytime soon because of that. Form over fixtures, yes. But if Everton find it hard to score against their opponents then Lukaku can only suffer, good form or not. However a realistic chance of FPL points PLUS price rises PLUS a good fit for where you want to go with your squad is a good reason to move - hence Wilson for me.

I also really agree with Ryan that there are some excellent options in the sub-premium level. The OP assumes that having Sanchez, Hazard, Costa, Aguero and Silva etc will be beneficial. It may not be. I'm sure that even later in the season it will be possible to find mid-price alternatives to outscore some of them.

So having the biggest budget by Xmas isn't the name of the game. It only needs to be big enough. Which means it's a factor but only one of many. The only "essential" in FPL is points. And the money game is only one (small) part of how you achieve them.

      1. Marstar
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

The OP said 'may (or may not)' not 'will' become essential.

Also Sale Value is more important than Team Value since multiple .1 rises on many players gives you no purchase power compared to .2 rises on a couple players.

Futhermore if you have a heavy hitter gaining value you will not likely sell him as he's probably a season keeper. On the otherhand some1 like Kolarov who is going through a purple patch and will most likely be rotated at some point is the type of bandwagon you jump on to increase the Sale Value of you team. He is the type of player that gives you access to in form players you could not afford on top of your current squad.

However, his entire post was based on the "may" assumptions.

Ruth is correct, if it turns out to be the "may not" and that the big hitters never get scoring, then building value is almost meaningless.

Well said, posts like the op really annoy me as they set impressionable noobs into panic and reinforce outdated theories re value that date back to a time when price rises were quicker and we had many more big guns that were almost essential like lamps gerro ronaldo and fabregas as well as some big fwds at the time like Drogba and rvp. There just aren't as many big hitters of that quality in fpl anymore which essentially minimises the advantage of value.

Disagree, chasing price rises is basically knee-jerking. It's a fact that the most expensive players don't always get you the most points. I'm not worried about losing, say 1M, if it means I can have the players I want.

What is 1M anyway, when there's options like Mahrez, Wilson, Diouf etc. freeing up funds? Also Pedro could outscore Hazard (who knows) which gains you 2M. That's a lot of price changes and ripping up your team instead of just finding a cheaper option who will fire better than an expensive one!

      1. Marstar
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Mahrez, Diouf, Wilson are also example of the price rising options people are chasing. Why are you treating points gainers and price rises as mutually exclusive?

If/when Mahrez and Wilson run out of steam they will be cashed in for in form bargain option in the 5th/3rd Mid/fwd slots and the Value gained used to upgrade to more expensive players ... in my case upgrading budget defenders/keepers to premium nailed on options which historically have delivered higher points averages by season's end.

Mentioned those because they scream value to me. Fine to get them right now, but that they are rising in price is just a bonus imo. I'm not saying team value isn't an important part of game, but I'm saying the consensus on here is that team value is everything. People transfer out players that look like dropping or are dropping in price (sometimes even for hits) even if they still are good options (see Hazard, Sigurdsson, Ramsey, Henderson etc..)

And what's the fun in following the price changes like a slave, I'd rather try to find the next bargain than knee-jerk in the same players as everyone else.

      I agree with this entirely.
I am not even near the top 1,000,000 at the moment but have a team worth 101.2 and haven't even used a wildcard yet, so I'm actually quite happy! Done it mainly by transferring very early in the week (plus a -8 hit) which I usually try to avoid doing, but I agree; this season it's worth it

      WHAT UTTER RUBBISH!

Value is pretty important but I usually find I end up with a mill or two sitting in my account for large chunks of the season.

It is not always the most expensive players that sour the most points as perfectly evidenced by a look at the top points scorers in f over the first three gws. The better players understand this imo and they pick the player they think will score the most in a given period rather than just trying to buy the most expensive players

Does anyone else think that the Overall Rankings are going to tell us very little this season for a fair few weeks/months because the very top percentile have pretty much all played their Bench Boost and Triple Captain? They both have provided some large hauls for people, with the likes of triple captain Mahrez, Kolarov, even Kompany I saw on one, so until everyone has used theirs it leaves the rankings a bit all over the place!

Or do you think it could balance out prior to everyone using them? I know that someone in my mini league (who usually does awful) has managed 176 without either chip, although they have played their WC, so it shows it's not all about the chips but someone like myself has 137 and that's a good 70/80 points off the OR1!

Huth & Mane > Kolarov & Mahrez for -4 worth it?
I would have done only Mane & Mahrez but I have 3 Leicester players.

I'm pretty set on bringing in Silva for either Depay or Ozil for -4 this week. Leaning towards dumping Depay. Would anyone think Ozil should go instead?

I would have sold Depay, gunners has better fixtures short term. At the same time i dont fancy Øzil either..try to upgrade to Sanchez or just get rid 🙂

I think I'll get Sanchez eventually, definitely when I wc or possibly even for Hazard soon.

    I'm really considering a WC

    Hart___(Guzan)

    Kompany___Clyne___Smalling____Cedric____(Morgan)

    Haz___Depay___Wanyama____Puncheon___(Henderson INJ)

    Costa___Benteke___(Zarate INJ)

I've just brought in Kompany and Costa this week for Ivanovic and Rooney.

Want to bring in - Silva, Mahrez, Pedro, Wilson. Plus I want to shift Wanyama.

    Thoughts and advice?

    Mert > Kolarov (-4)?

I missed Kolarov's rise, but I'd rather not catch Mert's fall, and there's a good chance he'll pick up the points at home to Watford.

      • 14 Years

Mert may not fall - at least not until late in the gameweek. So you have plenty of time.

Probably, just feel like Mert might start rotating with Gabriel and Kolarov will outscore him over the next 5-6 GWs.

Liverpool defenders are seemingly damaging the average for many of us. One of those could be a shout given the 3/4 next fixtures are very favourable.

Looks like the most popular transfer(s) this week:

    Payet + Pelle/Sakho/Gomis/Diouf> Pedro + Wilson for a hit
