The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Chelsea’s stars of 2014/15 rise to the occasion at Stamford Bridge as both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard deliver goals to earn Antonio Conte a victory in his first Premier League outing. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 1.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s spot-kick was hugely significant, not least because it saw Hazard deliver in Gameweek 1, but also because it appears to confirm him as Chelsea’s designated penalty taker. That’s something of a puzzle given that Oscar took one in pre-season with Hazard on the pitch. Now with penalties secured, Hazard’s stock, like that of Riyad Mahrez, has enjoyed a major boost.

Diego Costa
Owned by just 7% of FPL managers, Costa’s fine winning strike rolled us back to the 2014/15 campaign and offered a reminder of his clinical finishing ability. His future at Chelsea is far from assured but if he can hint at returning to his debut season strike rate, he may yet enter our thinking. However, an early booking and a reckless challenge on Adrian also demonstrated just why we have to show extreme caution.

Cesar Azpilicueta
The Spanish full-back has significantly improved his attacking game and is now offering just as much from the left as Branislav Ivanovic on the right. Unlike the Serb, Azpilicueta’s starting role has rarely come under question and with no rival for his position, he continues to stand out as the key option in Antonio Conte’s defence. Tonight’s assist and bonus only underlined that further.

James Collins
Slaven Bilic opted for the Welsh warhorse over Angelo Ogbonna, potentially unlocking a 4.5 option in West Ham’s backline. That already brought Collins to our attention, even before his dramatic blast from a West Ham corner. A start against AFC Bournemouth should be guaranteed but it remains if he can hold off Ogbonna in the long-term.

In Decline

Andre Ayew
The Ghanaian’s West Ham bow lasted just 34 minutes before he gave way with a thigh problem. That was a blow to his 9.5% ownership who must now wait anxiously to see if he can recover for Sunday’s potentially profitable meeting with the Bournemouth defence. With Payet a likely starter, Bilic won’t need to take a risk with his new signing.

Michail Antonio
Charged with containing Hazard, he was always in for a testing evening. Seemingly consigned to a right-back role with Bilic collecting options on the flanks, Antonio was hooked shortly after conceding the early second-half penalty. His start against AFC Bournemouth could be in doubt – his fragility against top class opponents certainly isn’t, nor is his reluctance to continue as a full-back.

Sofiane Feghouli
The 5.5 midfield option is another in the West Ham treatment room. He missed tonight’s encounter with a hamstring problem which materialised in training according to Bilic.

Oscar
We thought he was on spot-kicks, clearly he is not. That’s a major dent to his appeal and with Cesc Fabregas breathing down his neck, the Brazilian’s owners will rarely be able to rest easy.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Am I okay to play a 4-3-3 next week? I have Townsend (tot) and Capoue (CHE) in midfield, but I would be comfortable to start all five of my defenders: Shaw(SOU), Stones(sto), Williams(wba), Friend(sun), Amat(HUL). Is it worth it to put another defender in over Townsend?

    Valencia Stones Pieters Friend Lenihan
    Mahrez Firmino Tadic Townsend Capoue
    Aguero Ibra Negredo

    0.5. For GW2,

    1 - Mahrez--->Hazard (this was my plan before a ball was kicked in GW1)
    2 - Lenihan-->Amat
    3 - Townsend--->Lamela
    4 - Firmino--->Coutinho
    5 - Strap the knee in and save FT

              Fair to say he won't be anytime soon being he wasn't even in the squad. You don't want to waste a FT on him though imo, just let him sit at the end of your bench and remind yourself what that extra 0.5 afforded you 😉

          @AT it was 43 but Payet & Kante were still to play.

    Foster (Jak)
    Valencia - Shaw - Stones (Friend, Chambers)
    Hazard - Mahrez - Eriksen - Deo - Redmond
    Kun - Carroll (Gray)
    0ITB

    Made a mistake by not having Ibra partnering Kun. I figured by saving 5.0 by having Caroll instead I could have premium mids and defenders but instead it means I have too much money (and points) on the bench.
    A) save
    B) mahrez->Capoue & caroll(i)/gray(ii) -> Ibra
    C) specified other

    cheers

        But they also have Batshuayi, and could sign Lukaku?

          They do, but as of now Costa seems to be the main man. Plus there could be good link up play between Costa/Lukau/Batshuayi like Costa's goal against West Ham

    Not overly happy having to play Tadic this week (mun).

    Would you bench Tadic for Evans (EVE) or Morgan (ARS)?

      I'd playing Evans. Arsenal know they will concede every week right now so are going to attack, could be a big scoreline this weekend

    I must admit, in a sadistic and self-serving manner, im quite looking forward to Vardy's brace against a severely depleted Arsenal back line at the King Stadium this weekend. I won't lol, oh no I won't, but I will do a little jig across the living room floor.

    People without ibra.. how do you think he will do?
    i really dont think hed be worth having with or over aguero at all.. nervous for this hull game though cos it could clearly prove me wrong if he runs riot

      He'll likely score quite well if he stays for this season, could end up with 15-20 goals. But he'll be sharing baps with the rest of United's forward line and there a good chance he could be rested when they go to Europe. I'm not too fussed that I don't have him yet, but it all depends who you've got instead of him really.... and of they can match him for points

      Highly doubt that he will explode against Soton.
      Saving FT this week for flexibility in GW3, may need to bring him in then.

      There are 2 types of people who don't own Ibra. One with Zero ITB and one with 1.5MITB. Sadely i fall into later as it hurts more when he scores. 😀

    Backline:
    Valencia - Stones - A.Williams - Shaw - Walker

    Is it worth it to trade one down to Amat/Kingsley to save up money?
    Thanks

      I think you have to, waaaaay too much money tied up in that back line. Shaw > Amat

      Waaaay too much spent in defence. Yes, get Amat and redistribute the funds a little.

        Valencia is in better form and seems to be more attacking. Played for their forward than Rooney for most of the game against Bournemouth
