End of Season Awards – Midfielders

After rolling through the leading goalkeepers and defenders from a Fantasy Football perspective over the 2016/17 campaign, our end of season award nominations continue with the main men in midfield.

Once again, we’ve released a poll in the right column of the homepage to collect your votes – please remember that each person can cast four votes this time around.

2015/16 Fantasy Football Scout Team of the Season Review

Goalkeeper – Jack Butland

Defenders – Toby Alderweireld, Hector Bellerin, Christian Fuchs

Midfielders – Riyad Mahrez, Dele Alli, Dimitri Payet, Mesut Ozil

Forwards – Jamie Vardy,Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane

The contrast in the Fantasy landscape over the last two seasons is more than apparent here, with only Dele Alli making the shortlist among 2015/16’s leading lights.

The Spurs starlet made huge strides to improve on the 10 goals and 12 assists racked up in his debut season, with 18 goals and 11 assists as Mauricio Pochettino’s side capped an impressive campaign with a second-place finish.

Raised expectations, the move to the London Stadium and some poor recruitment last summer suggested it could be a difficult season for West Ham United, and that was reflected in the fortunes of Dimitri Payet.

The Frenchman only managed two goals and seven assists during the first half of the season, before forcing a move back to his former club Marseille in the January transfer window.

Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil both endured disappointing campaigns.

Mahrez – the top scoring player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last season with 240 points – only managed half that number this time around, and was rarely a factor in 2016/17.

Initially priced at 9.5 in FPL on the back of his heroics in Leicester’s shock title-winning campaign, the Algerian looks certain to drop in price next season, although a summer move away from the King Power Stadium could re-ignite his Fantasy prospects.

Ozil also started the season available at 9.5 and initially got off to a strong start, scoring three goals in his first six starts.

But a poor run of form during the winter months saw the German largely forgotten as a Fantasy asset, before he showed flashes of his best form towards the end of the campaign, producing a goal and three assists in his last four appearances.

The Gunners playmaker still ended the season with 167 points in FPL, so his price is unlikely to change drastically next term, with a drop to 9.0 perhaps a possibility.

So with Alli the only name retained, here are this season’s runners and riders for the midfield spots.

Alexis Sanchez

After a couple of relatively impressive seasons at the Emirates, the Arsenal attacker finally proved himself as Fantasy royalty and more than justified his lofty 11.0 starting price.

The top-scoring player in FPL, Sanchez ended the campaign on 264 points – a career-high for the Chilean and some 97 points ahead of his previous season.

Sanchez’s total of 24 goals was just five down from his tally for the last two years combined (16 and 13), while it’s a similar story for his 11 assists – just two fewer than the pair of seasons (eight and five) beforehand.

His versatility helped. Stationed as a lone striker or on the left of a 4-2-3-1, he then partnered with Mesut Ozil in central support roles in a 3-4-2-1 set-up over the final few Gameweeks.

A total of 11 double-digit hauls underlined his captaincy credentials, with the highlights including a 23-point return at West Ham in Gameweek 14 and 27 points over Double Gameweek 37.

A rise in price to 12.0 or even 13.0 could be on the cards in light of his improved output, though it’s uncertain whether he’ll still be at Arsenal by that point, amid mounting interest from Chelsea and Man City.

Top-scoring midfielder in the Telegraph game and number one striker in the Sky Sports offering, it remains to be seen whether Sanchez will be reclassified as a forward in FPL next time around.

Eden Hazard and Pedro

Both endured difficult campaigns in 2015/16, tallying just 104 and 113 points respectively, but the Chelsea wide men thrived under new manager Antonio Conte.

Hazard began the season strongly, producing double-digit scores in two of his first three matches, with Conte at that stage favouring a 4-1-4-1 formation.

But it was the Italian’s switch to a 3-4-3 in Gameweek 6 that helped Hazard reach another level.

The Belgian registered 49 points in just four appearances between Gameweeks 8 and 11, including a 19-point haul in the 5-0 thrashing over Everton.

Hazard didn’t really attain those lofty heights during the rest of the campaign, but a steady stream of attacking returns saw him end the season with 16 goals and nine assists and finish as the third highest scoring midfielder with 224 points.

In front of his own fans in particular, Hazard flourished. Whereas 15 of Sanchez’s strikes, and 150 points, were registered on the road, the Chelsea winner netted 12 of his 16 goals on home turf – at least three more than any midfield rival.

We can expect a rise from last year’s initial 10.0 valuation, with 11.5 or 12.0 perhaps on the cards. Yet as one of the few premium midfielders offering spot-kick duties, Hazard could more than merit such a hike – he’s now returned 190+ points in four of his five seasons in the top flight.

The change in system was also pivotal to Pedro’s success – he’d started just one of Chelsea’s first seven matches, returning a single assist.

But his first start in the new formation yielded an assist in the 3-0 win over Leicester City in Gameweek 8 before he produced 36 points in the Blues’ next three home encounters.

The Spaniard was, at this stage of the season, sharing playing time with Willian, but he would start 12 of Chelsea’s 13 matches between Gameweeks 20 and 33, registering three double-digit scores.

Pedro ended the campaign with nine goals and 10 assists, totalling 162 points in FPL. Despite his ability to plunder big scores in any single Gameweek, Pedro remained a differential throughout the campaign, with his ownership peaking at 486,673 in Gameweek 30.

Having kicked off last term at 7.5, Pedro could be similarly priced next season, with a hike to 8.5 the likely ceiling. But with rotation set to be more of a factor due to the Blues’ involvement in the Champions League, it may be that Hazard proves to be the only safe option from the Chelsea midfield.

Runner-up among midfielders in Sky Sports, Hazard claimed fourth in the Telegraph offering, while Pedro grabbed sixth spot in the latter game.

Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min

Alli and Eriksen featured on this very shortlist 12 months ago and both enjoyed stellar campaigns once again, registering 225 and 218 points respectively to finish second and fourth among FPL midfielders.

Although the pair were identical for ppm (6.1), how they came about it vastly differed – Alli offered the main goal threat (18 strikes to Eriksen’s eight) with Eriksen adding the creative edge (20 assists to Alli’s 11).

When it came to output, Alli was the most consistent – he produced points in 22 of his 35 starts, whereas Eriksen delivered in 17 of 36 outings. Yet the latter was more liable to serve up substantial returns, bettering Alli by 10 double-digit hauls to seven.

In terms of the underlying statistics, though, Eriksen reigned supreme – the Dane registered more goal attempts (133) and chances created (112) than any other FPL midfielder.

The pair were near-certain starters when fit, in either the 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-2-1 formations generally favoured by Pochettino, and battled it out for our attention throughout the season.

Both began the campaign priced at 8.5 in FPL, though we can surely expect a shift into the premium bracket next time out, with a cost of around 10.0 to 11.0 on the cards. But with Harry Kane likely to be earmarked by many as the prime route into the Spurs attack, the midfield pair could struggle to claim a place in our initial plans, at least.

The Spurs duo also claimed a place in the top four midfield spots in Sky Sports and the Telegraph, with Alli finishing first in the former game due to Sanchez’s classification as a forward.

Despite failing to secure a regular role under Pochettino, Son Heung-min still finished ninth in the FPL midfield standings with 174 points.

The South Korean’s total of 14 goals and nine assists from just 23 starts was hugely impressive, with his most consistent spell of the season coming between Gameweeks 30 and 33, when he produced 42 points in FPL and shone as a mid-price differential playing predominantly on the left flank.

Impressively, an average of 154.5 minutes per goal was second only to Sanchez’s 140.8 among FPL midfielders.

Son will surely come in cheaper than his high-scoring midfield team-mates, yet there’s no question that he remains far more prone to his manager’s rotation plans than Alli and Eriksen, particularly when Spurs opt for a 3-4-2-1.

Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane

Liverpool’s star midfield trio all enjoyed strong campaigns, although it was rarely clear which one provided the best option.

Although Firmino finished as the Reds’ top scorer on 180 points, this can mainly be put down to injuries – Coutinho and Mane started just 26 and 28 matches to the former’s 34 appearances on Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet.

Indeed, in terms of ppm, Mane (5.8) and Coutinho (5.5) both bettered Firmino’s 5.1.

All three started the 20161/7 campaign with different price tags in FPL – Coutinho came in as low as 8.0, with Firmino at 8.5 and Mane 9.0. This time around, there’d be no real surprise if there was no disparity, with a move to 9.5 or even 10.0 a possibility for all three.

Looking forward, much may depend on what system Klopp employs.

The Reds’ manager mainly chose a 4-3-3 last time out, with Coutinho, Firmino and Mane as the front three, though a switch to a midfield diamond in the final two Gameweeks helped Liverpool put seven past West Ham and Middlesbrough without reply.

Coutinho was utilised in a deeper role yet still amassed 29 points over that pair of matches, though the notion of Firmino and Mane as a front two – particularly if, as expected, they remain as midfielders – will increase the appeal of both players.

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Following his best ever FPL campaign in 2015/16, when he registered 158 points, much was expected from Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson on the back of a successful Euro 2016 with Iceland.

Priced at 7.5 in FPL, a tough opening fixture list persuaded many managers to largely ignore Sigurdsson from the outset.

But despite the Welsh club battling to avoid relegation for the majority of the season, he still ended as the sixth top midfielder, serving up a career-high 181 FPL points thanks to nine goals, 12 assists and 18 bonus points.

Sigurdsson’s role on set-pieces and as the first-choice penalty taker almost guarantees a steady stream of attacking points – indeed, despite providing just three double-figure hauls, he still supplied attacking returns in 19 of his 37 starts.

Joint-top with Sanchez for shots on target (49) from midfield, the Icelandic schemer scored or assisted 48.8% of the Swans’ 45 goals and his output over the past nine months may justify a price rise to 8.0 or even 8.5 in FPL.

It remains to be seen, however, whether he will still be at the Liberty by that point, as he continues to be linked with a move to Everton.

Kevin De Bruyne

An injury-hit first campaign limited Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne to just 131 points in FPL, but much was expected of the Belgian heading into 2016/17 following the appointment of head coach Pep Guardiola.

De Bruyne was handed a price tag of 10.5 in FPL but, despite topping the assist charts with 21, he struggled to gain significant investment due to a lack of goals, finishing the campaign with just six.

The City star spent a sizeable period of the season playing in a deeper midfield role, but his form over the final few weeks, when he averaged 8.3 ppm in his last seven appearances from a more advanced position, may be a sign of things to come in 2017/18.

De Bruyne ended the season ranked fifth among FPL midfielders with 199 points, although he was joint-first across the entire game for bonus points, with 33.

Heading into next season, De Bruyne is likely to come in around the same price and looks set to remain as City’s chief creator. Despite his lowly goal output, it’s worth noting that he struck the woodwork on eight occasions last year – more than any player in the top-flight.

But with Gabriel Jesus already a preferred pick for many and Sergio Aguero still in the mix, De Bruyne could face a tough task to claim a spot in our five-man midfield – particularly if Leroy Sane remains in the mid-price bracket, having delivered just 103 points in his debut campaign. Factor in new boy Bernardo Silva and there’s no shortage of competition for our attentions at the Etihad.

Michail Antonio

After enjoying a fine debut campaign in the Premier League in 2015/16, the West Ham midfielder produced another strong run of form until sustaining a season-ending hamstring injury against Swansea City in Gameweek 32.

Antonio ended with 132 points, registering nine goals and eight assists from just 29 starts – an average of 4.6 ppm that was on a par with Chelsea’s Pedro, for example.

He enjoyed a purple patch at the start of the season, tallying 38 points between Gameweek 2 and 5 and played in a variety of positions under West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, from right-back to a central striker, although the bulk of his production came when operating on the right wing.

The former Forest man seems set to remain around the 7.0 mark for 2017/18 and could again emerge as a popular midfield asset thanks to his aerial ability – only Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (13) has scored more headed goals than Antonio (12) over the past two seasons.

Josh King

A sensational second half of the season saw King rival the likes of Swansea City’s Michu from 2012/13 and Dele Alli from 2015/16 as a stand-out budget midfield option.

Although he ultimately returned 16 goals, three assists, 17 bonus points and a total of 178 points in FPL, King struggled for the first few months and netted just twice in his first 18 matches. However, a run of 14 goals from Gameweek 19 onwards was more than any other midfielder.

By the time King emerged as a viable Fantasy asset, his price had dropped from an initial 5.5 to 5.3, with just over 30,000 managers owning the Cherries attacker in Gameweek 22. And despite ending the campaign priced at 6.2, that late-season surge ensured that he ranked second for value in terms of points per million (28.7).

Versatile enough to play in a central support role or up front, King’s classification will be one to watch next time out, given that he is already listed as a forward in the Sky Sports game.

We can expect a rise to around 7.0 or 7.5, although our attentions could turn to Jermain Defoe if the veteran returns to the club over the summer.

Having scored in each of the final three Gameweeks, Junior Stanislas could also offer competition among the Cherries midfield contingent – his average of 5.1 ppm was superior to King’s 4.9.

Etienne Capoue

Starting off at a cost of 4.5, the Frenchman served up seven goals, two assists and 14 bonus points to end the season as the number one value midfielder in terms of points per million (29.1) and second overall to Burnley stopper Tom Heaton (29.2) in 2016/17.

After registering just a single assist during the previous season, Capoue had next to no history as a viable FPL asset. But our assessment soon changed after he was utilised in an advanced midfield role by Hornets head coach Walter Mazzarri.

Stuck on numerous benches through the opening Gameweeks, Capoue racked up four goals and an assist over the first five matches, becoming the cause of much frustration as many failed to find a spot in their starting XI for the red-hot Watford midfielder.

Capoue was the first major bandwagon of the campaign, finding himself owned by over 1,700,000 managers by Gameweek 8 to peak at a price of 5.3.

His total of 131 points in FPL – more than double any other Watford midfielder – should earn Capoue a slight price hike for 2017/18.

Joe Allen

Moving from Liverpool to Stoke City in the summer, little was expected from a player whose most prolific season was back in 2011/12, where he scored four times for Swansea.

But a surprising shift into the No 10 role meant Allen burst into life, registering four goals and two assists between Gameweeks 6 and 10.

That run of form saw the Welshman emerge as a favoured cheap fifth midfield option, but he was unable to hit those heights again, failing to add to the three double-figure hauls produced over that spell.

Ending the season as Stoke’s top scoring player in FPL with 118 points, Allen looks set to be the subject of a slight price rise from last term’s starting value of 5.0.

Can see Pep walking if City don't win the league next season. That squad is just ridiculously good. More to come as well.

Aye exactly as far as I can see they haven't signed much at the minute.

That city team has needed major work I said it last season everyone thought great side. They need Sanchez and at that they then have too many attacking players and no defence, sure that will let People down again.

          Happy new year.

Bernardo Silva looks some player though Nidgey. And they're closing in on Ederson, Mendy and Walker apparently. All fit what they're trying to build.

He looks excellent but no better than sane kdb silva i dont think he brings any thing they dont already have to the table. Another excellent looking option though. That keeper looks ropey to me and this playing out from the back at sll costs only puts more pressure on him and the team imo.Walker is bang average. Mendy i like a lot that is an area that will be signigicantly strengtened if that goes through

Im not so sure about that tbh mate. If we get griezmann he will operate in the hole and drift with mkhi and mata to play more on the right both who have proved themselves to be top players over the years. Wouldnt have him over mane lallana or coutinho either. That just works so well for you lot. We get carried away a lot by what looks awesome on paper.

      Herrera - Fellaini

Late reply. Busy watching the relegation/promotion play-off.

I was referring more to the list than anything else (Dembélé, Bernardo Silva). It just happened to include a player that already signed for another team. Apologies for adding some perspective to the OP.

Maybe for the neutral but there isnt anything dull about wayching your team lift silverware. If he wants to go out and smash someone he will if he wants to nullify completely and nick a win he will. To gain the kind of success he has everywhere you need to be effective at both. While a squad isnt his own and there are still trust issues with many there will be more nullifying. One thing remains constant. Trophies and the hate it brings.

I fully agree he is an excellent manager - I'm no hater.. But like you say for a neutral there have been some very average games across his managerial career.

As you probably know I'm a spurs fan, and I'd love some silverware....

The ability to win the really big games (CL, FA cup SF as examples) is still where he has to learn though and where Jose is streets ahead. He was never going to lose the EL final, whereas Spurs in that situation would have been wobbly.

I said the same last season, but top 6 this year is going to be some battle. With Arsenal out of top 4 and our wage bill, I just don't see us competing with Utd, City, Chelsea for the big signings.

Spurs need to improve the 1 in 4 success rate we've had with signings the last few years.

Dortmund can't compete with Bayern. Their Board are deluded if they think selling their players to European and domestic rivals means they are competing.

I am thinking of setting up a new community tournament next season.

Since this will be a season long tournament, it will be impossible to conduct unless I get some help and some new partners/organizers. I also have my final exams in August so I will definitely need help from others to set this up!

    Here's a brief outlook about it. 🙂

There will be 40 teams with 2 Divisions (20 teams in each) with relegation and promotion. The number of teams will be modified according to the number of participants.

Each team will work exactly like how real football teams work.

Each team will have a group of FFS managers and there will be a captain for each team. Each team will be given the same budget to recruit the players (FFS managers). A players auction will be held with the captains where they can use the budget to buy the team players.

After the teams are formed they will play against each other in a head to head format in a 20 team league. 3 points will be awarded for a win, and 1 point for a draw. The teams will be placed in the league according to the points accrued. There will be relegation, promotion and Champions League qualification.

Like in real football, there will be transfer windows (after the auction) where we can buy, sell and release players. Transfers will be done with the money in the budget. Since the auction is in this window, there will be no transfer dealings in this summer off season (only auction). The transfer window will start from January.

According to the standings in the league, teams will be awarded with money in the budget, from which they can buy better players and strengthen their team. All these things will carry into the next season.

As I said, this tournament works exactly like in real football world, with transfer deals, rumours, league matches, CL matches, relegation, promotion etc.

It might look complicated but once things get along I will make it easier for you. 🙂

I hope it will be a thrilling league 🙂 Please, like I said, it will be impossible to set this up without the help of others. If anyone wants to be an organizer, please email me at newfantasyleague9@gmail.com. Ideally I am looking for 4 more organizers.

Looking forward to your views 🙂

Ideally I am looking at 40 teams and each team with 7-8 players. So I need around 220 FFS managers. If the number of participants are less, the number of teams will be less. Say if there are 24 teams, each division will have 12 teams.

Honestly, I was sceptical at first but the more I read the more I liked the sound of it. There are a few issues and things I don't quite understand (like how in the hell CL would work?!?). I think you're being a little optimistic with the number of teams and perhaps a draft type system might be better and simpler. Also I'm not sure it should be a rolling season thing to start off with, if it goes well then maybe...

I don't mind getting involved though, I'll drop you an email later. 🙂

There were 192 people in Chili Bowl last year and many wanted to join but couldn't. I am looking around 220 people. But if the number of participants are less, the number of teams will be less. Say if there are 24 teams, each division will have 12 teams.

I applaud the ambition, but if I understand the concept correctly, this will be a workload similar to the Texas Chilli Bowl for the (four) organisers, and for 38 weeks. And then you need up to 40 committed Team Captains, who will align diaries for the pre-season FFS players auction, and then run their teams for the whole season (including the complexities of the January transfer window).

Presumably, prices would be assigned to FFS Managers based on their HOF rank, which I suppose is a good way of leveling the playing field; but I am not sure what purpose the January window serves (eg if I am in a team, can I be transferred or released without my consent?).

In essence, I like the idea, but I think it needs to be lower maintenance. I would definitely wish to participate, but I don't think I would have the spare capacity to be an organiser or captain.

      Good luck.

Great idea! I think this will be a lot of work and absolute best of luck to you.

As a part organizer of the Chili bowl and FIFFSA I will post some advice. I won't be involved in planning or playing as I decided to retire after the last one but here are some tips.

Get as much help as you can. I would say you want 5 or 6 people to organize it all of whom need to be committed for the duration. It is hard when a big proportion of the work falls on one persons shoulders.

You need captains and help and it is generally hard to get them in my experience. Make it clear from the outset they need no experience and it takes them minimum work to do the job to encourage people.

Be prepared. Have all of your spreadsheets ready to go in advance and test them. There will be a lot of maintenance to do on this the last thing you want to be doing is scratching around during the event to make things work.

Have everything update as close to real time as possible. Instant results help to keep people engaged. The longer a tournamnet is the harder it is to keep everyone involved so use every trick you can think of.

You would be best doing an article on a game weekly basis. If people know what is going on then again it helps them be engaged and mention as many people and teams as possible. People like that. This can be hard especially when there is a midweek gameweek

Make sure everyone knows you are the boss. The will always be something controversial which happens. It is your decision and nobody elses. If other members of the organising team make decisions then you can end up not being consistent.

Consistency is important. The minute people feel they have been hard done by they will lose interest.

Season long sounds nice on paper but it will be difficult to do in reality. Not only there will be times when you may find it a battle to keep it going over that period but inevitably some people will players or captains will lose interest as well. It has been hard enough even on the most popular tournaments in the past.

You will get criticism. No matter how open you make it for people joining some people will always find a reason to complain. Just ignore them. If you make enough effort you would be able to fill twice the number of spots you are talking about and there will inevitably people who will say it is only open to "the same old faces" this is usually because they are the ones who will actually put their hands up to be captain so they will likely choose people they have played with before. It is only natural. Even on FIFFSA this happened and I think there were something like 400 plus individual people involved in that and we went out of our way to make it as inclusive as possible.

      Good luck!

I like the fact that it's one GW where you can play a WC and BB together. However put off by 100.0 team value to spend and lack of surety around formations/players.

When the chips first came in, many City supporters got lucky and took an early lead in the overall rankings by using BB or Triple Captaining Kompany or Kolarov in GW1.

Just in the interest of stimulating a bit of conversation.

We sometimes talk about rule changes we would like to see, some better than others, but we seldom include rule changes to the transfer system. We accept the 50% rule and accept the revaluing of players at the start of each season....but is there any other way we'd like to see it done?....or at least explore the possibilities?

Would love to see price drops in line with how fast they rise. For the season Kun has had I am amazed he was still the most expensive purchase...

What is the perceived reason for the 50% rule? Is it to stop people playing the price rises and quick sales?

How about full profits if you have owned the player for a set period of time? Over complicated I guess.

For example I was so reluctant to sell Costa last season as I bought him early.

I sometimes think about having 2 FTs every GW... Would drive price rises/drops even more and would drive the game towards more benefit from short-term punts, which might make it more fun...

That's interesting, more people feel the opposite that the price changes are too common. I have seen a few casuals caught off guard in the early season by the price falls on well owned assets. As a banker I am ofc a big fan of watching the stock market changes in FPL 😉

I'd much prefer no price changes. Then it encourages strategic transfers rather than having to get certain players and do early transfers all the time or risk being priced out / falling behind on team value. Would also lead to less of a template.

Also makes it more viable to be patient with players that you think will "come good" rather than feeling you have to sell because they're haemorrhaging value.

What effect would there be if instead of revaluing the whole game each season we simply left the prices as they finished the season. The game sorted out the price of Alli and Eriksen and co all on it's own....Why do we need to revalue?

Alternatively...and the other extreme....Why bother with price rises at all?...I know it's engrained in the game but does it really serve a purpose as far as the game developers are concerned.

That wouldn't be true if we only had the original 100 mill budget at the start of the season. We'd have some hard choices to make as always.

All it would mean is that instead of guessing what Eriksens price might be we would already know it because the game decided at seasons end what his value was. Why does it need to change?

Buying Alonso at 6m or Lukaku at 9m would have seen many more with them 2 & Kane, Sanchez Coutinho.
Heaton 4.5, McCauley still 4.5,. King 5.5m - I reckon the template would be soooo nailed on.

To the contrary, the price rises drive managers to buy the same player, the one who's rising in price, and it's a vicious cycle too, as when people start buying, the price starts rising, and people buy even more... Herding, herding, herding...

Correct. We would be starting back again with 100 mill budget but the only difference is the price of the players is the same as when they finished the season.

All it means is that instead of revaluing players for the sake of it they remain at the price the game decided they were worth through the previous seasons transfer activity. Why do we need to bother revaluing them?

Maybe because the game doesn't decide the prices efficiently enough. Take Mahrez for example, he started the season 9.5m, and went down to 8.9m. So he dropped 0.6m during the season. Do you think 8.9m would be a good price for Mahrez next season? Would anyone buy him for that price? I think the whole point of pricing is to make the players appealing but not too cheap...

...and they would have been sold a pup even at 7.2...

Mahrez is a good example because we on here all knew that his second half of his good season wasn't actually any great shakes...so we may well not have been taken in by that cheaper price.

As an alternative view his re-evaluation was a bad one and took him out of the game altogether really....

I can't remember but he was just an example... All I'm saying the price of a player in FPL is meant to be in accordance with the points they score in the game, correct? It's difficult to predict, of course, and some players will always be too expensive or too cheap... But I feel by revaluing the prices we can have more accurate price/points ratios than if we just let them be... TM gives some great points below too! The situations at the clubs change!

I'm gonna guess he finished at between 8.0 and 8.5 so the revaluing of him as a player was wrong at 9.0 and the market value closer to realistic (actually too high as well..but not by as much)

There are also games in which the prices are changed according to the players' form, regardless of ownership changes. Which means that if a player scores points, his price will rise, if he doesn't his price will drop. That is a way that certainly doesn't encourage templates, because the prices do change, but no matter how many people have bought a player, if he fails, the price will drop.

When they revalue the game they under value some and over value others. I don't see the difference other than the fact that taking the price from the previous season is factual whilst revaluing is just an educated guess.

Changing clubs, new additions etc would mean old prices are worthless. Kane would be cheaper than what people expect him to be so ownership is likely to be greater with your system. Aguero leaving would make Jesus a steal at his current price.

Alternatively knowing that a player changing clubs may or may not impact his output (either way) would become part of the game...as in having to know what's going on with players in the real world.

And of course Jesus would be a steal...but will he actually score more pts than Aguero...?....So you still have the same questions to ask yourself.

GW1 revalued price is a fact as well, as FPL towers have revalued the price and the new price is equally a fact... So it's not educated guess 🙂

But when you were talking about the educated guess vs the fact, you imply that the fact is more correct than the quess... It's not... The fact of price taken from the game is equally a guess regarding how correct the price/points ratio will be next season...

The fall off rate for FPL as a game is quite high. That rolling over of transfers wouldn't half help the game developers to keep ML players interested. They play the game for fun and being able to change their team en masse by saving transfers is surely worth considering.

Could be 2 FTs per round, or 2 FTs every other round, or every third round, or whatever (as perhaps 2 FTs per round is too much) to make it a bit more interesting as well... Now you have to do it for a hit, but why not be able to take more short term punts for free as well at times?

      Hey Wakey

Hope you liked the article I linked earlier.

This is massive. It basically dictates how we put our teams together and how we act throughout the season. If you have a Vahrez situation suddenly you don't have any issues with team value. This year, with all the big guns performing, but with prices depressed from the 2015/16 season and those big guns with low prices suddenly performing again, it created the conditions for a transfer race. With more managers than ever before, this manifested itself in many managers buying "just cos [x] scored", which then meant a price rise was threatened by Saturday night, creating very short, sharp bandwagons. Last season was the season of 0.2 rises by Sunday night being a real possibility!

It's hugely arbitrary. FPL tightly control this, and there's no open dialogue with the community about this. It's really interesting when you think about it, actually; they want as many people to play as possible, but the have relatively little (through Mark is the only thing I can think of) actual connection with the 'hardcore' community, which I think frequent posters like yourself and I maybe belong to.

They could definitely be more transparent about how the prices / economy is managed; it seemed like, judging by the DGW alerts that the third party sites we all relied on (FPL stats; FFix) relied on, they did have some control over how prices rose and fell. But they seemed happy with, throughout the season, prices rising and falling with all the sensitivity of my teeth after a few gin and tonics. It was absolutely mad.

I really hope they do something about it but, as I said in the article, if this will be part and parcel of the game going forward, we're going to be forced to take hits and make ruthless decisions more and more in terms of who we choose to take up lots of our cash in our teams.

What could they do? I'm not really sure. Freeze price changes on Thursday night and then change them come the end of the gameweek? I feel like that'd mess with the dynamic mechanism FPL works under. Make it slower for players to rise? Well, you'd find FPL managers subbing in the best players very, very quickly with no price to pay for not being quickly on it - and TV-driven DGW teams come the later gameweeks seems to be what they are tacitly encouraging.

All in all, I'm not sure. I'm not too sure yet it's hit breaking point in terms of it being "bad for the game", but it certainly is something worth watching and we need to watch this a lot next year. No idea how we'll lobby them if it gets out of hand, but I hope they do look on fora like this one and gauge the community's reaction cos it was a bit crazy at certain points this year.

My understanding is that that they want the freedom to adapt and tweak the price rises and falls according to behaviour in the market. So, if they see something extreme, they want to reserve the right to “calm” the factors between rises and falls.

If they publish or are totally transparent about the system, they lose that ability and whatever they publish, that’s what we have all season.

As it stands, ISM can tweak away behind the scenes without breaking any written rule and we are almost oblivious to it – certainly until sometime after the event.

The tools we have in the community can only get close to the algorithm – they will never track it 100% all the time because it can change – maybe only subtly – at any time.

Do you have any thoughts on why they revalue across the board instead of maintaing values from the previous season Mark?

It’s an interesting concept to leave the prices as they end the season but then players move, managers move and situations change and the balance of the game could be broken as a result.

Understandably, they approach the game in pre-season and try to guard against having 3-4 players who break the balance of the game. If the prices carried over, we would likely have those instances.

Rashford for example, will likely go up in price regardless of him having a limited season because he is far more likely to get pitch time next term. If his price carried over and he got starts for United next season, he would completely imbalance the game.

I have no doubt that end of season prices do impact on the starting price of a player the following season but I don’t think it would work to have it “carry over”.

I suppose at it's best a carry over would work well for the likes of Alli or Eriksen. The market decided their prices and it's about right.

At it's worst, as you say, then the likes of Rashford or Iheanacho are under priced and lead to a template. Having said that plenty of players move after the prices are set, so it actually happens anyway.

Great post, well written. I agree, it did get a little crazy at times, with Saturday night transfers entering your mind because you may miss out on your perfect 2 FTs move by 0.1 and neither of your 2 incoming had even played on the Sunday yet!

I fell into that trap one Sauturday night and got Gungodan in for a 0.1 rise to fund my other transfer. lol@me.

But it's like every year gone and every year to come. If you can remain calm and not concentrate on price rises in the first half of the season and instead gain TV/SV from picking the well scoring players instead of the latest price rise darling, then you are more than half way there.

A sustained period of, say, 10 or 12 GWs in the middle part of the season without any hits will see you make steady progress through the OR before a few well timed hits in the final third of the season should see you surge more dramatically.

Despite the craziness of the player price market last season, the often over quoted premise on FFS remains the same, and rightly so.

        Chase points, not money.

It did seem a bit mad at time.

I think a season defining moment last season was when those with a high TV went for Coutinho in BGW28 whist those with a low TV hopped on the King pick.

Money doesn't really matter in this game sometimes and can in fact be harmful.

But sometimes it matters a lot. And when it does, it often happens that it hits the casual and new players by surprise and they are very discouraged to continue. See below.

Definitely Wakey. The money aspect is quite fun, imo. I enjoy tracking the rises and falls but they shouldn't interfere with your thought process on whether one player is better than another for your FPL team for that GW and the next few too.
All good on paper but I've managed to do some massive bandwagon hopping in my time but trying hard to curb those urges as I believe it leads to bigger gains (OR wise) in the long term.
** I know you play the game differently with regard to OR but I know you get my point 🙂

I read your blog and FB page. Good stuff. I left a comment below your original post.

If this game is aimed mainly at ML's as oppose to us FPL nuts then that transfer system must surely be the worst part of the game for those folk....really frustrating I suspect. I would support FPL giving it a good coat of thinking about from the point of view of the user.

Agreed. The transfer system is casual player's nightmare. In my first season, I was doing pretty well points wise half way through, but my TV was incredibly low and I just couldn't have all the big hitters that others had. And it just happened to be a season when the 2-3 most expensive players were destroying the league. I dropped massively, like tens of thousands of places, and lost my very solid ML lead too, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I like the price system as it is.

I generally play a price conscious game e.g. yes I'm playing for points not team value but I'll go early on a transfer at times to offset a double whammy of a drop and a rise.

This makes sense to me, I like doing it and I feel in ML terms a few million from GW30 onwards can be beneficial if spent correctly.

If I had a critique of price it's that at times a player takes a long long time to drop (eg big price players like Aguero) and I think there has been a degree of price fixing behind the scenes by FPL which Mark has alluded to above.

Completely agree they are all potentially better. I think experience on the big stage is one thing, and also keepers in the lesser teams making save after save is very different from the concentration when you have next to nothing to do.

If Butland had been fit, I think we would be number 1 by now. Heaton has been excellent and deserves a chance. Pickford has a little way to go yet I think.

Pickford definitely not ready to wear the number 1 but he had a stellar season for Sunderland and was racking up the saves in big games.

I am a big fan of Fraser Forster too though this season he was a little disappointing.

Exactly the same here Alan. I've managed to BT Sport with the total entertainment package for £12 pound per month (fibre and landline £30 pm) on a 12 month contract. When August rolls round with BT you can add Sky sports 1 and 2 for £22 per month, rolling contract. That's 64 per month for 9 months of football season and 44 without it. Still quite steep but well worth it if you love the game

I run all my medical equipment off the FFS server, 90 secs will be fine - any longer and I'll give Gubbins a shout. 😉

Imagine if first place in flp won £1000000 and cash prizes for top one hundred. Funny thing is there's no way fpl could get any more competitive than it already is, jonly difference would be is that it would have 20 million managers

Plenty of people writing Huddersfield off. I can see them surprising a few teams next season.

I don't see much difference in class between them and Burnley for example. They also have a decent size fan base.

I just think people writing them off before a ball is kicked is potentially premature

Well Wagner will try to come up with something. He'll also be knocking on Klopp's door for a loan or two.

I think he could make a few canny signings in the transfer window, I also feel there is a chairman there that is willing to back the manager

Depends a lot on who they sign. Current squad would finish rock bottom

Just have a gut feeling they might start ok similar to when Blackpool came up

No chance. Their manager is one classless oik of a man.

This, I love the thrill of checking the Price Change Predictor every night and making tough decisions whether to stick with my guts and make the transfer, or let it go and let him rise/fall in price

Gareth Bale > Premier league, if he's benched for the final, is gaining a lot of traction in the press with Chelsea and United in the running. Food for thought.
