Limited to just 22 appearances in an injury-hit 2014/15, Mesut Ozil was priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after managing a mere four goals and six assists. The Arsenal midfielder went into the previous campaign firmly in the shadow of Alexis Sanchez but took his game to a new level, racking up six goals and 19 assists to clinch the final midfield spot in our Team of the Season, with 11% of the votes.

The Statistics

Ozil kicked off the season in steady yet unspectacular fashion, notching three assists in his first six appearances. The former Real Madrid midfielder then embarked on a spectacular run of form between Gameweeks 8 and 17, scoring two goals and bagging 12 assists, averaging 8.9 points per game (ppg) over that stretch. That led to his value peaking at 10.0 by Gameweek 20, though Ozil failed to replicate that form over the rest of the campaign and went on to blank in 13 of his final 19 matches.

The Arsenal playmaker ended the season as the fourth highest scoring player in FPL with 200 points, while he ranked as the second highest scoring midfielder behind Riyad Mahrez (240 points). Ozil led all players for assists, with 19, having only managed a best of 10 in his two previous Premier League seasons, while he created a chance every 21.9 minutes this term, better than any other player in the league.

One of the more surprising aspects regarding Ozil’s output this season was his penchant for racking up double-figure hauls, totalling eight over the course of the campaign. That was helped by an ability to hoover up the bonus points, accruing 30 over the course of the season, ranking him joint-third among all players, bettered only by Mahrez (38) and Harry Kane (33).

The German international’s average of 5.7 ppg was only trumped by Mahrez (6.5) among midfielders, while he ranked joint-fourth for ppg among all players who featured in at least five matches, with team-mate Sanchez just behind on 5.6 ppg.

The Prospects

Having enjoyed his most productive season by far in English football, Ozil looks poised to become one of the highest priced midfield options across the Fantasy games as we head into 2016/17.

A hike to around the 10.0 mark looks likely, though bearing in mind that Sanchez seems set to come in at no more than 11.0 as a result of his relatively disappointing 167-point haul, the German – whose ownership rose over 50% last year – will struggle to remain such a popular pick.

After a dire first few months of the season, Sanchez scored or assisted in eight of his final ten appearances in a new role on the right before being shifted back to the left for the Gameweek 38 win over Villa. If he can continue in the same vein, it’s fair to say that Ozil faces a tough task to oust the Chilean in our Fantasy affections.

Although Ozil remains top dog in terms of creativity, Sanchez’ goal threat is far more convincing. Despite missing eight matches in 2015/16, the former Barcelona man led the way for total attempts (107) and efforts in the box (72) amongst midfielders, producing more than double Ozil’s numbers (47 and 32) in over 600 minutes’ less pitch time.

Whilst Ozil and Sanchez look the only two nailed-on options for Arsene Wenger in the final third, there’s the hope that Alex Iwobi could continue the progress that saw him start eight of the Gunners’ final nine league outings. With Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also vying for pitch time out wide, though, few will be prepared to take an early punt early on.

With less of a price difference between them, Sanchez’ eye for goal may well make him the go-to man at the Emirates next time around. It would be remiss to rule Ozil out altogether but, should a value option emerge, either in the final spot in Arsenal’s attacking midfield slots or up front – depending on Wenger’s ability to find an upgrade for the erratic Olivier Giroud – the German may have to surpass last year’s output to remain prominent in our plans.

I haven't been on here a huge amount but from the rmts I've seen the following come up an awful lot:

Switz def, Aus def, Perisic, Alaba, Grosicki, Fab, Giroud, Kane, Muller.

Not that that's a bad thing necessarily of course.

Morning all! Just wanted to take time at the end of this FPL season to thank all the community members, especially the mods. In a world wide web full of forums that spew hate and general impertinence, this community is a gem. I've been a member for two years now and even if I dare not hope to amount to winning FPL, the joy and fun I receive from participating in the community with membership benefits is well worth every pound (or US dollar in my case). Special shout-out to all the members who put together little competitions throughout the year (Yes/No, FootballFrog prediction, UEFA tourny, last man standing and especially the FIFFSA World Cup [Djiboutian machine!!!]). You guys really help to maintain my interest in FPL long after my hopes of breaking the top 10,000 have convulsed and died (no mini leagues for me, not enough interest from my buddies 🙁 So thanks once again!
    Cheers!

Final Mini League winning confirmed at the weekend.. What a great season it's been! 7 cash mini leagues entered across FPL and The Sun games and all 7 won.

The biggest one was one in The Sun game.. Local friends league, avoiding the sort of competition you get on here, but 79 entries with 70% going to the winner 😀

I think if Spain's fixtures were on the second day, then maybe he would be worth punting on, but as they play on the third day out of a possible 4, it don't leave much room for error should he not get on the field.

Bild are reporting that Götze's decided to stay at Bayern and start a new era under Carlo Ancelotti.

They also say Götze has fired his agent Volker Struth today, who was criticizing Bayern and pushing for a move to Liverpool.

Götze: "I'm looking forward to the new season, and I'll do everything to be in top shape for my first training session under Carlo Ancelotti."

    Rui Patricio
Jordi Alba - Hector - Schar - Dragovic
    Perisic - Alaba - Grosicki
    Griezmann - Muller(C) - Kane

Subs: Sommer - Dier - Rafa Silva - Alli

I have 0.5 spare and feel I need Ronaldo in up top for the groups, by far the easiest one, so he could walk it, plus once I get him out I can get whoever I want up to for the knockouts. So who could I lose up top, and where would I free up the extra money?

I think I'm going without CR (for the first matchday at least) and while I'm not saying he won't do well, I think Portugal will take a defensive approach to this euros. He also plays on the final day of the first matchday meaning I'd have to have him and all that investment benched up till the last day, rather have players who play earlier in the match day so i can swap them out if they flop. I also think Nani may prove to be a decent option as well for far less investment

Pick 2 from these 3 defences in Euro fantasy:

    A) Austria - (Portugal, Iceland, Hungary)
    B) Switzerland - (France, Romania, Albania)
    C) England - (Wales, Russia, Slovakia)

Currently on first two, as England have a relatively inexperienced defence at this level. Thoughts?

Don't think so. The Italy lineup is a mystery right now though. No idea what formation Conte intends to use. We'll know more after the friendlies.

He is a good player. Hasn't featured much for the national team up to now though. Candreva, El Sharawaay, Insigne and Bernardeschi are likely ahead of him in the pecking order. Don't even think it's a given that Vasquez makes the final squad.

IM, your Euro them problem, downgrade Cesc and Koscielny. Not much goals for Cesc, and France will have Mangala or Mathieu starting since Varane got injured, so CS's will be unlikely for France.

      Kosc is already gone! 🙂

Cesc / Grosicki are teetering over the edge... Not sure who I like cheaper than them though..

Dzsudzsak -- Are Hungary any good?
Alli -- Are England any good? 😛
Joao Mario -- Unproven internationally? I don't know much about him.

Hungary are not any good and will likely lose their group. Grosicki is imo likelier to score goals than Cesc and is cheaper, isn't he?

I don't have a team so don't know about prices. Isn't it premature to make a team now anyway? I don't understand why you're all in such a haste to waste your time before the friendlies are over and final squad lists confirmed. Then we know who actually is likely to play and in which role.

Playing behind two prolific strikers (internationally Milik has done well in qualifiers).. Scores a few goals himself.. Not many other options on show! Seriously, when you look at the 6.5m options and below, it pretty much comes down to 3/4 players. Alli is the highest potential probably but I really don't trust England and need to see more friendlies first.

Camp... We're bored... It's either this or we make some TFF style quizzes 😛

You know, this may sound crazy, but have you thought about doing something not related to fantasy football? Maybe some extra work? Maybe read a book? Maybe take a trip to that west coast of Ireland? Have a walk at the shore? Go fishing? If none of this appeals to you, get the newest Football Manager and play that. At least it's _more_ meaningful than making fantasy football teams without affirmed squad lists.
