Team of the Season – Harry Kane

After emerging from nowhere to break through as a star of the Premier League during the 2014/15 season, Harry Kane cemented his standing as one of the top strikers in England with another outstanding campaign which saw him earn the Golden Boot accolade. The England international scored 25 goals, one better than both Sergio Aguero and Jamie Vardy, and was also named alongside Vardy in the PFA Team of the Year. Kane proved a popular Fantasy pick after a slow start to the season, and took 30% of the vote to take one of the three forward spots in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

As already mentioned, Kane struggled during the early weeks of the season, possibly as a result of his involvement with England in the European Under 21 Championship last summer. Failing to register any attacking returns in the first six matches, his goal in the 4-1 victory over Man City in Gameweek 7 proved to be something of a turning point, with Kane then scoring seven times in just four appearances between Gameweeks 10 and 13, firmly putting himself back on the radars of Fantasy managers.

By the time the England international registered a hat-trick against Bournemouth in Gameweek 10, his price in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) had dropped to a season low of 9.2, having originally been valued at 9.5 at the start of the campaign. There were to be no more glaring dry spells for the Tottenham forward, with double-digit scores against Norwich (twice) and Sunderland during the winter months rewarding the many FPL bosses who entrusted him with the captain’s armband in such favourable match-ups.

As Spurs looked to push leaders Leicester at the top of the table, Kane remained deadly in front of goal, registering 10 strikes and an assist in his final 13 matches of the campaign, ending the season with 211 points in FPL – level with Vardy among forwards, and second to only Riyad Mahrez (240) across all positions. Kane’s price peaked at 10.4 during the final weeks following his 13-point haul in the 4-0 win at Stoke in Gameweek 34.

No forward amassed more bonus points than Kane (33), while the Tottenham man also led all forwards for both shots inside the box (105) and shots on target (74). In terms of points per game (ppg), Kane averaged 5.6, lagging slightly behind both Aguero (6.1) and Vardy (5.9), largely due to his slow start to the season. His total score of 211 points was the best among Tottenham players, with Christian Eriksen next on 178, while Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld finished with 168 points apiece.

THE PROSPECTS

Having broken the 20-goal barrier in each of his last two seasons, Kane’s status as one of the leading strikers in the Premier League is in little doubt. In that respect, we should expect to see the England international be subject to a further price hike next time around, perhaps to around 11.0 or even 12.0 in FPL, the price tag that Chelsea’s Diego Costa was handed at the start of this season as a proven striker for a title-contending team.

While both Eriksen and Alli provided strong options from the Tottenham midfield this season, it’s likely that Kane will remain the primary attacking option on show at White Hart Lane. The difference in price between Kane and the two midfielders will certainly play a part in shaping our thoughts, though, and should Eriksen and Alli come in at least 2.0 cheaper, they could well prove viable alternatives to the striker. Kane will certainly be among the stand-out captaincy options on a weekly basis next season, however, with the benefit of penalty duties making the extra outlay perhaps worthwhile.

Worth noting is how Kane struggled to find the back of the net when Mousa Dembele wasn’t in the side. Indeed, Tottenham’s top scorer netted just one goal in the 11 league matches that Dembele failed to start in 2015/16, compared to 24 strikes in 27 outings with the Belgian on board. This is something to perhaps consider when building our pre-season squads, bearing in mind that Dembele will be suspended for the first four matches of the new campaign.

Although Mauricio Pochettino is expected to add to his squad over the summer ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign, Kane’s record as the only forward to start every league fixture last season underlines his importance to the Tottenham cause. At a time when fellow big-hitters Aguero and Daniel Sturridge remain susceptible to injury and the disciplinary record of Chelsea’s Costa continues to cause consternation, Kane’s consistency of both output and pitch time should ensure he remains a hugely popular option for our three-man frontlines in 2016/17.

You add into the mix Chelsea in the same boat and a new manager, Man U with a new manager and looking to buy top players and Man City also. I wonder if next season may just see the league revert to being all about the big teams again.

Totally forgot the others with new manager!

Wouldn't worry to much about Pep and Mourinho, they would tried to sign top class players, and based on Klopp's transfer strategy, we wouldn't go for that kind of player (not that we can compete financially anyway).

Me too thinks that next season could revert back to normal, but it would be more tight in the 5-8th spot.

A first stab into this game, and apart from 6/7 teams, no idea about the starters, so really limited there - what are the major problems in this team?

    Patricio, Sommer,
    Juanfran, Rose, Hector, Dragovic, Denayer,
    Martial, Alaba, Alli, Perisic, £4.5m,
    Lewandowski, Muller, Giroud.

Yes, I could include another hardhitter in the mid like Hazard, but then, don't want to make the defence too lightweight.

Lots are advising against going with both Muller + Lewandowski as it doesn't work well in terms of manual subs / captaincy changes mid-gameweek, seeing as they play the same day as each other, and then against each other. I had both in for a while but have since dropped one... for now.

Other than that it looks good Saniul! If Martial starts he could be a bargain.

The 4.5m mid could hurt you as it'll be poor backup but we might get lucky with the emergence of a decent cheap option before the start.

Will you be WCing in the group stages? If so, are you sure you want to splash out on Hector / Juanfran from the start?
      I'll be getting Hector in GW3 I think 🙂

        • 10 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

I think I'm still going for both as I think they're both gonna get a ton of points and there's still midfielders like Siggy who we could captain on the last day if it went tits up.

          • 13 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

Yup, that aspect doesn't worry me too much as I'd (hopefully) want to keep the captaincy on one of them anyway, Alaba / Siggy / Janko are decent safety nets.

It's when Poland play Germany afterwards, puts me off Lewa from the start... slightly.

            • 10 Years
            7 years, 11 months ago

I'll likely keep both but if Germany look solid there's always the opportunity to spend an FT on Lewa to any striker I want for GW3 then get him back on my WC ahead of GW3.

        Thanks for the input, pal.

This is a first stab I was trying to make with the players from the teams who I am pretty sure of. Rafa Silva is £4.5m, won't he play?

As for Lewandowski and Muller, I just got them purely based on the fact that they are the two best striker options in the game, apart from Cristiano. Haven't given much thought to the subs and all, yet. What do you think of someone like Kane?

        1. Irish Madridista ⭐
          • 13 Years
          7 years, 11 months ago

          Very good first stab 🙂

I've seen a few on here talking about a few cheap starters with set pieces for the "lesser" teams, so I'm hoping that they come to the fore in the friendlies to help us balance our budget a bit easier.. There are apparently lots of cheap, decent defenders for 5.0m / 4.5m too. I wouldn't be the best to ask about who they are however.

Re Rafa Silva, lots are going for him, he's likely to get some minutes, no idea how nailed he is though.

That's a pretty strong argument for owning Lewa + Muller alright.. They're always going to be up there in the scoring charts!
Kane is probably the only England player that tempts me, but I'm avoiding England as I think they're overpriced and might struggle to beat teams convincingly.. (#biased?)

            • 11 Years
            7 years, 11 months ago

Not really biased, haven't they always been like that?

I even like the look of Sigurdsson at £8m, does everything for this side. The first fixtures puts me off though.

Haha yup. Maybe I'm in too close proximity to the English media to avoid being brainwashed into subconsciously thinking they're challengers.. 😉 Shane Long is where it's at if you want a player to leave in for the entire tournament... 😉

Siggy is a great option, if Iceland do anything, he'll be involved surely 🙂 he hit good form towards the end of the season too!

The German team could be really the one to look out for - don't think either the defence or attack is settled. Maybe friendlies will tell us better?

    --------------------------------------------Neuer
    ---Can-------------Hummels-------------------------Boateng------------Hector
    --------------Khedira-----------------------------------------------Gundogan
    ----------Ozil-----------------------------Kroos--------------------------------Reus
    ---------------------------------------------Muller.

One other possibility is Kroos dropping to CM instead of Gundogan, Ozil taking no 10, Muller moving to the right, and Gomez starting as the striker. Hope it is the former though.

Don't like Reus, too costly for a mediocre player - go for Ozil instead!

He had some good performances in qualifying, but think he will falter at the big stage. Don't you think players like Ozil, Muller and Kroos are more capable of doing it at the big stage?

P.S. Even Dortmund fans were not happy with him most of the season. Some even wanted Pulisic to start ahead of him.

There's a big difference between being less proven at major tournaments than Muller and being mediocre!

By mediocre, I mean not the best player in that German midfield. Don't let 12 goals this season blind you - he often went missing in big games, and hadn't it been for Aubameyang and Mkhitariyan, they wouldn't be where they are.

If you're saying he isn't the best player in the team then fair enough, 'mediocre' isn't a relative term though - it makes it sound like you think he's Germany's answer to Carlton Palmer or something!

I think he will be golden. Joint 6th for attempts on goal during qualifying despite only playing 4 games. 12 attempts and 2 onto woodwork. Only De Bruyne ahead of him out of the big hitters

Yep that is the plan. I originally had Lewa and Muller but could only captain one. I've opted for Lewa and hope that is the right choice.

I too am waiting on definitive news of Schar. If he is out I will probably do Hector for Boateng and Rodriguez for Schar.

Juanfran a bit risky considering his price
I like Janko, Payet and Alli as picks too.
Reus over Hazard for me because of the easier fixture too.

Hazard was a deliberate pick as he plays in a later group so can replace a low scoring player from the earlier games. I know Reus is probably the better pick but I cant afford both without major re-shuffle.

        I will monitor Juanfran. Thanks

I like the Payet pick. We'll get the lineups ahead of time so you'll know if he starts. Prefer Sigurdsson, Calanoglu and Perisic to Alaba. Defence needs buffing for sure starters and you need a backup keeper too. Sommer/Patricio is a good combo.
