Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Euro 2012 – Matchday 1

Robert Lewandowski gets Euro 2012 underway by netting the opener against Greece but Wojciech Szczesny spoils the home celebrations by picking up a straight red card. Russia tear the Czech Republic apart, with Alan Dzagoev the star performer as Dick Advocaat’s side show just why they are the Group A favourites…

Poland 1 Greece 1
Two red cards, a couple of dodgy goalkeepers and the runaway winner of the Captain Poll netting the first goal of the tournament – yesterday’s opener had a bit of everything for Fantasy managers. The Poles lined up as expected, with Damien Perquis shaking off any doubts over an elbow problem to take his place at centre-half for the co-hosts. Poland looked menacing from the off – Robert Lewandowski managed more shots than any other player and Ludovic Obraniak’s set-piece duties seeing him create five goalscoring opportunities for his team mates.

Jakub Blaszczykowski provided the assist for the opener, crossing from the right for Lewandowski to nod home just after the quarter-hour mark but, despite having the majority of attempts on goal, the Poles failed to add to their score. Wojciech Szczesny’s dismissal means he will now miss the next game against Russia and is hugely frustrating for his Fantasy owners – he is stuck on -2 points and is unable to be subbed out of our lineups for this round. Replacement keeper Przemyslaw Tyton is now up for consideration – priced at 4.0 in the McDonald’s game, his penalty save harvested a six point return in comparison.

One game in and Greece already have a defensive crisis brewing. Fernando Santos lost both his first-choice centre-halves inside the first 45 minutes – Sokratis Papastathopoulos received his marching orders after picking up a couple of innocuous bookings and will now miss the game with Czech Republic on Tuesday. He currently sits on -2 points and, similar to Szczesny, cannot be replaced this round. Avraam Papadopoulos limped out of the proceedings early on and has been ruled out of the tournament with knee ligament damage. Kyriakos Papadopoulos is now handed a chance in the heart of defence – the Schalke man’s 17.2% of owners in the McDonald’s game will be relieved, after he was omitted from yesterday’s starting XI.

Dimitrios Salpingidis could well oust Sotiris Ninis from the Greek first-team after an eye-catching second half display. On as a sub for Ninis, he grabbed the equaliser before being felled in the box by Szczesny – after Greece missed two spot-kicks in the previous friendly with Armenia, reports suggest Giorgos Karagounis stepped up as a last resort, with no other player willing to take responsibility. The Greek captain subsequently missed, leaving the match all square.

Russia 4 Czech Republic 1
Dick Advocaat’s side produced a superb attacking display in the evening kick-off to confirm their status as Group A favourites. Playing on the right of the Russia front three, Alan Dzagoev dazzled throughout and bagged a brace to pick up a 13 point return in the McDonald’s game. Classified as a midfielder and priced at 7.5, many had preferred Roman Shirokov due to the latter’s cheaper cost of 6.0 – Dzagoev had just 6.6% ownership prior to last night’s game but this is surely set to rise now. Shirokov still proved his worth, though, netting his side’s second, while Andrei Arshavin looked back to his best on the left of the front three – he created as many as seven goalscoring opportunities and was rewarded with a couple of assists.

The margin of victory was flattering only on the Czechs – Aleksandr Kerzhakov had seven efforts and failed to manage a single attempt on target before being subbed off. His replacement, Roman Pavlyuchenko, had an instant impact; despite being handed 16 minutes game time, the former Spurs man still managed a goal and assist contribution, giving Kerzhakov’s Fantasy owners plenty to fret about ahead of Tuesday’s match with Poland.

The Czechs rolled out their expected first XI, with Michal Kadlec at left-back again after starting their last friendly game against Hungary in the heart of the back-four. Two down at half-time, Bilek withdrew Jan Rezek and brought on Tomas Hubschman – this offered brief hope, as a superb Jaroslav Plasil through ball allowed Vaclav Pilar to reduce the deficit to just one before Pavlyuchenko’s introduction swung the game firmly in Russia’s favour.

Plasil was a strong creative presence throughout and, similar to Arshavin, provided seven goalscoring opportunities, though picked up just a single assist for his endeavours. For Michal Bilek, there’s no hiding from the fact that his team were second best by some distance last night – the only consolation is that the other two teams in the group look far less likely to cause the same problems as Russia. With a group stage wildcard available in the McDonald’s game, Fantasy owners of Petr Cech and Tomas Rosicky could see a drop in the pair’s prices; the duo have 35% and 17% ownership respectively and are more susceptible than most if managers choose to ship out their Czech assets on the back of last night’s performance.

Ronaldo will go nuts this tournament and will score a hat-trick v Germany in a 3-2 win leaving all you doubters wrong.

What people forget is Ronaldo is portugal. He takes free kicks, pens and almost every shot

If I was in a cash league I would definitely stick. May aswell bag the points you have as it's a pretty decent score.

If you're playing for fun then you can take a risk which might or might not pay off. It's a bit like deal or no deal I suppose.

Yes you will have to use autosub and then only players who don't play will be replaced. You cannot bring in Chalkias manually and if you bring in any other play manually you lose Chalkias. Bad error having two keepers onn the same day, still better than having Chesney though.

haha, yeah at least its better than sczechny 🙂 ah well, i think i will just leave it be for this gameweek as those 3 chalkias points are pretty valuable, as my subs are poor. I think im going to wildcard and get more of a balanced team instead of having useless players on the bench (to make better use of subs)

Anyone else looking at Gebre Selassie or R.Hubnik from the Czechs for WC team? I know they conceded 4 but I think Russia's attack is better than Poland's and alot better than Greece's.

Both 4.5m Selassie seemed to get forward well in yesterdays game and Hubnik got 16 recovered balls!!!

May take one as a backup, play on the first day and hope for a CS. If not just sub them out.

Yeah, i got Selassie. Think with Czech's needing a result in their final 2 games, and having got through their hardest game in the group, we could see a CS in one of their next two games. I got too attached to Kadlec's penalty potential before, but i've really gone off him. It's too much to just rely on his pens, with Selassie and Hubnik offering better chances for assists and RB's. Kadlec was poor yesterday, defending wise, at fault for atleast 2 of those goals

The college I'm in is kinda shit (hopefully you can remember which one I'm talking about because I don't really want to badmouth it too much on the internet!) but got a good group of friends so all is well.. Going to have to work a lot harder next year though! Barely scraped through my exams - I think, results are on Monday - thanks to doing next to no work throughout the year. How's the real world?!

Did you do Discrete in your first year with Sharry Borgan? If you know who he is then you'll probably find it quite amusing that he *apparently* got sacked for sleeping with a student. No one's seen him since first term.

Haven't really put too much thought into module choices for next year yet, should get round to it. I've just been told not to do Algebra!

Why did you regret scraping through first year? It doesn't count for anything!

Yeah, don't do Linear Algebra. Complex Analysis was well taught and easy, Bolton was my college tutor at Grey, he's awesome. Can't really remember anything else, other than Mathematical Finance was awful in third year, one to avoid.

8 points is really not a bad score for a captain. Id be quite happy with that, i know its tempting to change though.

As long as you have the players who score well in your team, captain or not, makes it less likely to really benefit.

      eg. if RVP gets 2 goals, 2x10 + 8 = 28
      otherwise, its 8x2 + 10 = 26

Not that much of a difference really, and that's *if* RVP scores 2 goals..

Hi I. Am confused with the captain choice in the macdonalds game, if I had shirokov yesterday as captain and I change captain to rvp today do I lose all his points or just half? I know I'd I do a normal sub like cech for lindegaard I lose cechs points, but in the rules it says you lose captains bonus? Can anyone explain?

There was some confusion last night on here about this.

It is my understanding that you just lose the captain bonus. Unless of course you sub him out completely.

Simply changing the armband will just remove his captain bonus. Has anyone switched their captain yet? If so what happened?

Morning Partner, glad to see you've kept to the "not sleep through deadlines" promise 😉

Good scoring yesterday, what are you doing with the captaincy though, I see we both had Shirokov (c)?

Morning Pardner 😉 yep! This partner thing has helped me as I'm trying my best not to let you down with my lie ins 🙂
Indeed it is a tricky one... what are the other options for you?
For me it would be RVP, and if he fails I would have to cycle through Di Natale and then Ibra...

Similar, my choices are RVP/Ozil/Sneijder today then Silva, then Ibra. The mian discussions this morning have been on whether to stick with Shirokov (c) or not.

I'm going to stick I think (depending on what you think), I posted my reasoning earlier - sorry to all others who have read this already

In case anyone wasn't around last night I'd thought I'd share this piece of joy.

Was scanning through the squads of everyone in my ML. One guy is currently on 2 points, and his 2 keepers are Cech and Chesney. That's gotta hurt

    Someone didn't read the rules.

Nearly as bad as your partner leaving Shorikov on the bench 😉

thanks for reminding me, wait until I get a hold of him 😛

My partner's idiocy I care about, that first piece of idiocy just makes me laugh, I did tell him to read the rules.

If he started with Cech, does he really switch to Chensey?

If he started with Chesney he is screwed anyway. Only a few of us actually have a keeper next week. Only 1 guy is anywhere near me in my ML, and I picked his team for him.

            lucky you.

Just had a quick scan of my ML for the squads. All but 2 of us have Chseney (me being one, and once guy has Casillas and Pletikosa and no Group A players)

One guy has Chesney and Cech as mentioned

One has Chesney and Tzorvas and so has no keeper next week

One has Cchesney and Lindegaard and so has no keeper next week

One has Chesney and Given and so is relying on Given next week

I sense some wildcards coming here.

if I decide to wildcard before MD2, and I am doing it now, will it be possible to change players before deadline 12 June 17:45 once again without losing points ??

Monkey chants have disrupted Englands training session today.

John Terry has been warned that if he does it again he’ll be sent home

Don't lie, UEFA clearly like to act as if racism doesn't exist, and the FA clearly don't care what JT does.

When changing your subs, can you put in a player 1min before kick off? As in, wait to make sure they are starting and then move them off your bench?
