Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Luke Shaw

Having played just a single FA Cup match prior to the previous campaign, it’s fair to say little was expected of Luke Shaw upon Southampton’s return to the top-flight. A product of the club’s youth academy, he looked firmly behind Danny Fox in the left-back pecking order but after climbing off the bench towards the end of the Gameweek 10 defeat at West Brom, the youngster soon established himself as a first-team regular.

Initially selected by Nigel Adkins and subsequently under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, Shaw went on to start 22 of the Saints’ remaining 28 league matches, with only a couple of minor knocks and a brief illness limiting his game time over the rest of the season. A series of consistent displays and comparisons with fellow-Southampton academy graduate Gareth Bale already have the suitors circling but, despite being linked with the likes of Chelsea and United, the teenager is expected to remain at St Mary’s as Pochettino’s side look to better last term’s 14th place finish.

Key Factors

  • Analysing Southampton’s defensive displays, the stats highlight how they gradually improved under both managers last season. The first 10 Gameweeks under Adkins saw the Saints concede 28 times, while the following 12 matches harvested 12 goals against before Pochettino took over. The Argentine’s installation saw his side take a step backwards, shipping 11 goals in six games, before his high pressing game proved dividend, with just nine goals against in the final 10 Gameweeks. With Pochettino’s future looking assured, the Saints could well benefit from less chopping and changing at the helm next time round.

  • Ultimately, with 60 goals against in 2012/13, Southampton were one of the poorest overall backlines. Given that only four defences conceded more goals, it’s fair to assume that they will remain in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games – a price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards for Shaw and, with new boy Dejan Lovren adding plenty quality at centre-half, the Saints could prove strong value at the back next time round.

  • While the likes of Lovren and keeper Artur Boruc offer up alternatives at the back, Southampton’s 4-2-3-1 system and high pressing game seems tailor made for both Shaw and fellow full-back Nathaniel Clyne to forage forward and offer plenty pace, width and creativity from deep. Granted, he failed to produce any attacking returns last term but, having grown accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League, Shaw may well be set to justify the level of interest shown by many of the top-flight’s elite.

  • Delving deeper into the defensive data, Shaw’s presence at the back made a considerable difference to the Saints’ resilience. They conceded 37 goals in the 16 matches without him in the first XI, or 2.3 goals per game, compared to just 23 goals against in the left-back’s 22 starts – just over one goal a game conceded; a substantial difference which bodes well for his game time over the season ahead.

  • The opening fixtures have fallen firmly in Pochettino’s favour as he looks to get off to a strong start. Having already engineered home wins over the likes of Chelsea, City and Liverpool during his short spell in charge, the Argentine will be buoyed by a schedule which hands his side seven enticing opening fixtures (SUN, WHM, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL, AVL) at St Mary’s. As mentioned in one of our recent rotation articles, pairing Shaw with a West Ham backline option looks a viable tactic over the first few months of the campaign.

Considering they already have a quality young goal keeper in Coutois its quite something. Although I am aware he will stay on loan its essentially 5m for a 3rd string goalie

I think you have to ignore Courtois for the time being. Even if Cech gets injured, I can't see him being recalled just for a few weeks to cover injury. Which means they need a decent backup who is prepared to spend most of his time on the bench.

For sure but my main issue is the price. Surely a solid backup can be found for under 3m?

That's the thing with Courtois on loan, they have to have a quality backup who'd be available on the bench to cover injury. It's more like a short-term second string keeper.

I don't know why any keeper would do it though, apart from the money. An incredibly thankless task. Must be very difficult to stay focused, motivated and ready to play for week after week of inaction.

All the three Dutch first-squad goalkeepers (Stekelenburg, Krul, Vorm) are now first-choice keepers in three Premier League sides, and are interesting Fantasy options for next season.

If all of them come at 5.0, who would be in your team?
Or which two of them, if you plan to rotate?

How much will your first team of the new FPL season depend on last year's form (like getting in Bale, Michu, Mata, RVP, etc) just because they were in great form last season and how much will it depend on new signings (like maybe Cavani, Higuain, etc) and pre-season games form?

Those of you planning on getting Boruc/Jussi/Ruddy as your keepers.

Whatever 2 keepers you go for will you then ignore defenders from the same team even if they form a good 3 or 4 way defensive rotation?

Learnt the hard way in the first half of last season, that if I double up on defense and goalkeeper from the same team for a single GW, then a CS lost would be a loss for two players... changed strategy in second half of season having only one defender/GK form one team and climbed from a rank of 600K at Christmas to 43K by end of season...

Before Di Caneo came along we had always viewed Sunderland as a tough club to break down, one that usually restricts score-lines to low figures. Do you think their solidarity will return next season, or will Di Caneo continue his kamikaze attacking? A 4.5m Sunderland keeper could potentially be a bargain.

Some of those rotations look too expensive for me. WHM, STK, WBA, FUL & NEW are all likely to set you back 5.0 surely. Too expensive for a 3-way.

I set a budget of 13.5 tops for a three way but that could a tad much for some players. Can see STK (Wilson), WBA( Jones), and NEW(Debuchy) all giving us a 4.5mil option

Debuchy would be a bargain at that price. Providing they start defending properly again.

Joined the game at 5mil. Newcastle did nothing and with him getting 24 points in 1166 minutes. 1 CS and 1 Assist. Should drop to 4.5

You have put in some effort in these rotations. Fair play to you.

Are you favouring one in particular so far or keeping your options open?

Is a three-way rotation meant for having two strong defenders, and the three others rotating? If so then some of these options might be too expensive for me, I'm a fan of cheapo defences myself.

Anyone remember when the FPL started releasing teaser prices on Twitter last year? I think we can estimate game opening day from when they start releasing those teaser prices...

        Thanks Optimus...

11 months 13 days ago, FPL 2012-13 was opened... So FPL 2013-14 should open in the next 17 days or so and in the next 10 days or so @premierleague should start releasing teaser prices on twitter...

        Am I right?

Sunderland trying to sign up Tom Huddlestone from Spurs. He is a decent player, and is right about his lack of first team opportunities at reasons wanting to leave. However if you look at his track record of getting injured, all to do with the knee too, I wouldn't be so keen....
