Pre-Season

Friendlies Round-Up – Wednesday

Iago Aspas is amongst the goals again as Liverpool register a sixth straight summer victory. Jose Mourinho is without David Luiz and Juan Mata as Chelsea taste defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, Adam Johnson fires Sunderland to a narrow win, Pablo Hernandez and Jonjo Shelvey are out of Swansea’s trip to Malmo this evening, while Stephen Quinn may miss Hull’s opener at Chelsea with a hamstring problem:

Valerenga 1 Liverpool 4
The Reds maintained their 100% pre-season record with an easy win in Norway last night. Brendan Rodgers made nine changes from the side that started in the weekend win over Olympiakos – with only Joe Allen and Iago Aspas retaining their places – and the latter once again impressed; his shot rebounded off the bar, allowing Luis Alberto to open the scoring, before the former Celta Vigo man fired home the second to notch his fourth goal in six appearances. The Reds boss utilised the depth of his squad by making 10 changes at the break, allowing Martin Kelly and Raheem Sterling the opportunity to further extend the visitors’ lead.

After the game, Aspas was once again the subject of his manager’s praise. With a superb opening schedule ahead, investment in Liverpool’s attacking assets looks a viable tactic and while Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge have earned plenty owners across the Fantasy games – despite the latter failing to feature over the summer so far – Aspas could prove a cheaper differential option if his current form continues. Certainly, his manager has been thoroughly impressed:

“I thought he was excellent again tonight, When you watch him, his movement is outstanding. If you look at the movement for the second goal, he made his first run when Stewart Downing had the ball. The line was blocked for him and he made a double movement to come in again. Obviously he was there to finish. He’s a goalscorer, that’s the reason we brought him in. It was a lovely chip that hit the crossbar [for Alberto’s goal] and it eventually came out, and we got a goal from that as well. He’s a really exciting player and in and around the box he can make things happen. He works his socks off as well. He’s done very well over the course of pre-season.”

FC Midtjylland 0 Sunderland 1
The Black Cats continued their impressive pre-season with a narrow win away to the Danish league leaders last night. Paolo Di Canio made three changes from the side that played Man City in the recent Barclays Asia Trophy match, with Kieran Westwood getting the nod in goal ahead of Vito Mannone, while Carlos Cuellar and Valentin Roberge were drafted into the back-four as Craig Gardner and Wes Brown dropped out. Further up the field, Sunderland are beginning to look settled in terms of selection –Adam Johnson and Emanuel Giaccherini were again fielded on the flanks, with Stephane Sessegnon tucking in behind Jozy Altidore in light of Steven Fletcher’s ongoing ankle injury. Johnson grabbed the match-winner (his first of the summer) thanks to an Altidore assist in a match that saw Di Canio make six changes as the second period progressed, with new boys El Hadji Ba, David Moberg Karlsson and Modibo Diakite amongst those introduced from the bench.

Despite the victory, Di Canio was far from happy with the performance. Alluding to the display of one of the club’s “French speaking players”, which was believed to be an under-par Stephane Sessegnon, the Italian admitted:

“I was disappointed with the attitude. The attitude is crucial. We can talk about tactics during the season or technical mistakes that can be improved by practice, but the attitude is the thing you don’t know. Some of my players are new, so I don’t know. I would not be arrogant enough to think I can discover their attitude in two hours of playing, but it can change for whatever reason. Yesterday was a big opportunity for all the players to show we are ready to start the season strong, but some of them failed to complete the mission. I have to make sure they change their mentality otherwise we will have a problem.”

Di Canio also explained the absence of Wes Brown and Jo Dong-won, who both failed to travel for the match. The Black Cats boss revealed the former is set to be a key figure in his plans for the campaign ahead:

“Wes had a little problem and we decided not to risk him on the day. He has had a very good pre-season, which was a surprise for everyone, even him. We didn’t want to risk him because he’s an important player now. On the day of the game he was running again. And today he can train harder because I want him to be available as soon as possible. It’s good for us that we have a player of his ability in our squad, and it is important to us that we have him able to play for us next season. As for Ji, he has been out for a few days, but we expect him to be back in training in the next few days. So at this moment in time, we do not have any real worries about either of them.”

Chelsea 1 Real Madrid 3
The Blues tasted defeat for the first time this summer as Jose Mourinho was downed by his former employers. Chelsea lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Frank Lampard making his first appearance of the summer alongside Ramires and Marco Van Ginkel in midfield, while up top, Oscar and Eden Hazard flanked Romelu Lukaku. In defence, Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole were handed the full-back roles, with John Terry partnering Gary Cahill at centre-half in front of Petr Cech. Lukaku teed up Ramires for Chelsea’s only goal before making way for Fernando Torres in one of six second-half changes, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle and Victor Moses also emerging from the bench.

David Luiz missed out with a minor hamstring problem, while Juan Mata was also omitted from the matchday squad – after the match, Mourinho gave an update on their fitness ahead of Saturday’s final friendly of pre-season:

“I don’t know if David Luiz and Mata will be back for Roma, they have some small problems, Mata a new one and David Luiz a problem he had in the past, a muscular injury he had before the Champions League final. They are working with the physios in Washington instead of travelling here. We’ll see if they can join the team and play a little against Roma.”

In Other News
Jonjo Shelvey and Pablo Hernandez have both been omitted from Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo this evening. The Swans travel to Sweden with a 4-0 first-leg advantage as they look to clinch a place in the group stages and with plenty of midfield additions over the summer, Michael Laudrup is expected to make some alterations to his starting XI, with Nathan Dyer and Jonathan de Guzman set to benefit from the duo’s absence. With their Gameweek 1 home clash against United just over a week away now, the Swans boss played down concerns over the pair’s fitness and expects them to be ready in time to face David Moyes’ side at the Liberty:

“We have a couple of players not here. We didn’t want to risk Pablo because we are talking about a muscle injury. He’s already training, but we will wait and he will train today and tomorrow and with the squad on Friday. The players are off for the weekend and hopefully he will be 100 per cent for Monday. Jonjo is sick – yesterday he had a fever. We spoke to the doctor last night and we agreed to see how he was this morning to see if he was better but he is worse, so that is why he has not travelled.”

Hull are sweating on the fitness of Stephen Quinn after the midfielder picked up a hamstring problem in the club’s friendly loss to Eintracht Braunschweig. Steve Bruce revealed yesterday the Tigers are awaiting scan results, with Quinn now rated doubtful for the Gameweek 1 trip to Stamford Bridge:

“It looks a bad one on first impressions so I wouldn’t have thought he’ll be fit for Chelsea, which is the big blow. Up until now we’d had a few knocks and a few strains but nothing that will keep anyone out for long, so it’s a big blow to lose Quinny. He got his foot caught and pulled his hamstring. We’ll not know the severity of it until we get home but he feels it just walking. That’s obviously a worry but I really can’t say how long it will be until we scan it.”

Having missed only four of 46 matches last term, Quinn’s security of starts – allied with three goals and six assists in 2012/13 – had offered Fantasy managers a reliable route into the cut-price bracket across the Fantasy games. One of the very few relatively appealing 4.5 priced midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his potential absence lessens the number of budget options and perhaps furthers the prospects of Palace’s Jerome Thomas as a cheap fifth midfielder for those looking to pay under 5.0.

Tim Krul believes he is firmly on course to make Newcastle’s opener at City on Monday August 19. After undergoing a shoulder operation towards the end of the previous campaign, the Dutchman has built up his fitness and made his first appearance of the summer on Tuesday evening against Glasgow Rangers. Krul was given 45 minutes by Alan Pardew but insists he is ready for the season kick-off:

“I’ve had a great couple of weeks training with all of the lads. It has been all about getting the confidence of making a few good saves again. You can train when you’ve been injured, but the best test is always to get back out there, and train again. I’ve just been focusing on the game and making saves. I’ve been training hard to get back in time. “Everything has worked to plan so far. The schedule I’ve had with the physios has worked well. It’s been spot on. They kept me back at one stage because the training was going well, but it’s all about the new season now.”

While Krul is confident of his availability, Pardew was a little more tentative when discussing his keeper’s fitness after the Dutchman missed 14 matches of the 2012/13 with a number of injuries. Given how crucial he is to the Newcastle cause, it seems likely that Krul will get the nod for the Etihad clash, with another 11 days left to step up his fitness:

“Looking at Tim, he’s been out for a long time. He is one of the best keepers in the world, so we want him up to speed. That means we have to be careful. We must make sure that he returns properly, and is fully fit for the season.”

Depends on the real reason that Louise was left out. If genuinely because of an injury and Mourinho wants to keep him then we can't tell much from it.

He was one of the first players I wanted when the game opened but there were too many other good options. I'm thinking over switching silva to him after gw4 to upgrade one of my forwards to rooney.

Def could be an option. On some corners/fks, playing higher up the pitch under di canio and has a proper pre-season under his built this year. One to watch for sure.

The fact that he is new to the league combined with the fact that his starting role isn't secure is enough to put people off I think, especially when many are already taking punts on Dzeko and Lukaku

  9. Potential differentials: forwards
    Squeakybumtime

    • 14 Years

Following on from yesterdays post on midfielders, here’s my take on the forward differentials. (Ranked by % owned, and less than 5%)

    1. Soldado (TOT), £9.5m, 4.8% (has risen 1.5% since yesterday and will continue, if Bale leaves it will increase rapidly)
Pros: Nailed on imo, both Adebayor (Besiktas) or Defoe (QPR) rumoured to be leaving, leaves little competition if one stays. Very good goal scoring record in Spain, 88 league goals in 5 seasons (41 in his last 2), may well be on penalties
Cons: May need Bale to leave to shine, Bale is quite selfish (don’t shoot me). May need time to adapt. Loves to pick up bookings

    2. Aspas (LIV), £7m, 4%
Pros: Looks likely to start the season in one of the 3 forward spots (along with Sturridge and Coutinho imo). If Sturridge isn’t fit for the opener he may even start right up front. Impressed pre season, scored again yesterday
Cons: Suarez and Sturridge ahead of him for no 9 position, and Costa should he sign. On wing means effectively Reverse OOP

    3. Weimann (AVL), £6m, 2.7% / Agbonlahor (AVL), £7m, 1.6%
Pros: AW will fill a cheap striker 3rd spot, both pretty nailed on playing either side of Benteke, in a young improving team. Both had great returns after February last season, if they can carry that on will def be worth considering
Cons: Both reverse OOP, GA a touch expensive, Benteke is the main man, you WILL be buying a supporting actor

    4. Rodriguez (SOT), £6m, 2.7%
Pros: Cheap striker 3rd spot and playing in a very attacking team who score. Had good returns after Christmas last season (5 goals), if he can carry that on will def be worth considering. 1.5m cheaper than Lambert, if it was 1m I’d say Lambert but the extra 0.5 makes it close imo
Cons: Lambert is the main man on pens and FKs, you will be buying him for open play goals. Small doubts in my mind about him being nailed on, not sure why

    5. Rooney (MUN/CHE), £10.5m, 1.8%
Pros: If he plays (for MUFC or Chelsea) he will score, so underpriced imo. A 20+ goal a season man who also offers lots of assists. On his day one of the best in the PL
Cons: Attitude, injury, uncertainty over future. Relationship with Moyes questionable. Mourinho ego vs. Rooney ego, will they mesh?

    6. Cisse (NEW), £8.5m, 1.6%
Pros: Should lead the line, capable of scoring heavily (see Jan to May 2012). Wonder goals vs. Chelsea and Swansea (off top of my head, could be more). Plays in a team that if they click could score bucket loads
Cons: Last season’s form was very poor, was 2012 a flash in the pan? Arrival of Gomis may see game time curtailed (Remy, HBA, Gouffran, Gomis, possibly Bent, two Ameobi’s all vying for 3 or 4 spots)

    7. Suarez (LIV/ARS), £11m, 1.2% (and falling)
Pros: Shoot shoot shoot shoot. Seems to be what Suarez does. Last season emerged as a consistent goal scorer, always in the think of the action, one of the best in the PL. If he plays he will score
Cons: Behaviour on and off pitch. Suspended first 6 or 7 games, temperament very questionable. Still needs 15 shots per goal ala Andy Cole. If he doesn’t go to Arsenal he surely won’t be wanted/loved at Anfield following BR comments last night

    8. Bent (new club), £6.5m, 1.1%
Pros: If he gets games he’ll get goals so underpriced. 3rd forward slot material.
Cons: Depends where he goes: New = rotation, Ful = no 9 role. Hasn’t played in a year effectively, may need to find his touch/finishing

    9. Carroll (WHU), £7.5m, 1.1%
Pros: Absolutely guaranteed 90 mins week in week out if fit imo, very little competition (Maiga). A menace in the box, always in the thick of things, more touches inbox than RvP last season despite playing 1200 minutes less (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/08/01/kpi-analysis-robin-van-persie/) imo will score 15+ goals if he stays fit, and plenty assists from knock downs/flick-on’s etc
Cons: Injury prone, may miss start of season. Can’t see many cons really tbh, will be in my team if fit

    10. Chamakh (CPL????), £5m, 0.3%
Pros: will be cheapest playing striker in the game if he moves (and gets a game), underpriced and owned by a few hundred people only. Remember he scored 7 times before Christmas in his debut season with Arsenal, so there’s something in there alright. Holloway likes to play attacking football (remember Blackpool Aug – Feb)
Cons: Loan to west ham last season saw him produce nothing, is it a sign of things to come, attitude? Palace are going to struggle. Introduced the snood

Also, a Saints fan on here was saying yesterday that Rodriguez never really seemed to get back to full fitness last season. If he manages it this season, he'll surely be a great pick and could be the one to own from Soton. As always at the start of a season, we are short of solid sub 7m midfielders

      Useful summary, cheers.

I'll add Altidore to the above. 1.5% ownership in a team with nice fixtures who should play a more expansive brand of football than last year. Nailed on until Fletcher returns in September by the looks of things.

I also think there's something to be said for Jovetic at 2.2% ownership.

To all those interested in the FFS UEFA leagues for the coming season, applications close in around 36 hours if you want to be a part of them (if you played last season you still have to submit the form).

Fill in the form here – http://preciselyme.com/fpl/form – to register your interest before the timer runs out and your name will be in the hat.

For more details, read this post – http://uefacouncil.wordpress.com/2013/07/27/return-of-the-leagues/

If you don't know what they are they are H2H leagues for FFS posters based on the real life leagues (PL, Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1) and a fictional Rest of Europe league.

My newest draft! Thinking of going with Cech instead of Chelsea def for security of starts:
    Cech (Boruc)
    Coleman Turner Collins (Brayford Chester)
    Hazard KDB Walcott Silva Thomas
    RvP Aspas (J.Rod)

Look okay? I have 0.5 in the bank so was going to upgrade Thomas -> Kim but not sure about the fixtures. Any other decent 5.0 mid options?

3 punts: Aspas, J. Rod, KDB
I would go for a Chelsea defender (Terry, Cole, Ivan) since they can score or assist. If Chelsea concedes twice, Cech will get you nowehere.

Have looked into it alright RE KDB and he is my one main punt. J.Rod and Aspas should be fine, really like the look of Aspas.

May still get A.Cole as he seems guaranteed two games. Would be an easy swap to get in Foster for Cech and swap a def for A.Cole.

Yes Cole is def. a great choice! Aspas will move on the flank with Sturridge up top. I expect the latter to play his first game against Celtic this saturday.
In fact, I prefer Anelka than J. Rod, Nicolas has been in fine form in pre-season and derserves to start IMO

I reckon that Sturridge just wont be that sharp for the first few games, with little pre-season games under his belt, and we can all remember how cautious Rodgers was with him last season. I reckon Aspas should start first game through the middle, and even from the flanks he looks dangerous. May be a little punty but will be easy to shift.

And with regards to J.Rod I just cant ignore Southamptons fixtures! Anelka looks a good price too for sure though.

Thanks for reminding me about Rodgers being cautious with Sturridge, I may reconsider my choice then!
Same as Anelka, Aspas deserves to start with his fine pre-season form then he coud really be a bargain! He might not get full 90mins though but it is pure speculation...

Odd development in the Bafetimbi Gomis to Newcastle saga: Lisandro Lopez is surprisingly about to leave Olympique Lyonnais for Al-Gharafa - which would leave Gomis as OL's only striker. Would they let him leave under these circumstances or do Lyon already have a replacement?

And as discussed last night, Stoke City are back in for Hannover 96's Mama Biram Diouf having met with club officials and the player's adviser in Germany yesterday. Stoke haven't placed a bid yet, but H96 have told Stoke which conditions would need to be met for a move. Fee would be between €6-8 million.

I'm going to spend the time between now and the start of the season creating hundreds of accounts and buying expensive defenders. I'll sell them all in GW1 and cash in on the price fall in my main team. I see no way that this won't be successful.

Any consensus yet on teams with or without RVP? This is assuming that bale is gone. I prefer my team without him but think I'll be going for the team with.

    With RVP
    Speroni McGregor
    Toure Baines Mertesacker Brayford Ward
    Walcott Coutinho Snodgrass Hazard Kim
    Van Persie Rodriguez Anelka

    Without RVP
    Mignolet Davis
    Coleman Cole Mertesacker Brayford Ward
    Michu Coutinho Mirallas Hazard Kim
    Lukaku Benteke Giroud

I think those three are great value to be honest, and for what they could be upgraded to don't think it'd be worth getting rid of baines. coleman is a possibility though. if i did i'd probably go snod to mirallas, wally to santi and toure to a city defender.

more defensive midfielders in low scoring games will benefit I think, and perhaps keepers (if I remember correctly). There was a hot topic on it and it was featured in one of the community round-ups if you feel like going back and looking

There was a pretty big hole in 3rdturds data though (no clean sheets recorded for defenders).

Im backing lots of points for centre backs in low scoring games, and maybe a slight advantage to mids over strikers when it comes down to assists

      Reply fail

My interpretation of it is that it is designed to more accurately reflect how well a player has played their position. For me it will have this effect:

Wing Backs who previously gained a lot of points if they got balls into the box, had shots will not get as many BP's as Defenders BP is now geared towards tackles etc.

Midfielders who make a lot of successful passes will do better than those who make a lot of dribbles, so I'd imagine Silva + Carzorla > Walcott + Hazard.

Forwards with good shot conversion will do very well, particularly if they score the majority of their teams goals (and therefore the majority of their teams winning goals). RVP is probably the least wasteful in this respect + scores important goals.

    Silva Hazard Walcott Coutinho Mirallas

Pretty balanced team. I want silva in my team but currently gone for coutinho, if silva starts to look nailed on and playing well he's a real bargain, hard to know what the team will be at city at the minute and rotation will be a risk.

Getting RVP's not even that big a decision. For me it's only three differences in the team:

    Lukaku > RVP
    Sturridge > Anelka
    Kompany > Chester

    Either side could do better.

Countinho played in the hole and was on plenty of corners. Wasn't originally in my thinking but if Rodgers persists with that he'll be hard to resist.

I'm not sure. I think Coutinho looks like he could be a world class 10. Suarez/Aspas flanking Sturridge with Coutinho behind is what I'd go for. Suarez does the majority of his good work from the flanks anyway (eg all the nutmegs etc).

There's a small band of dissenters on here who have crawled out of the woodwork to say that he's overpriced. I think they've picked the wrong battle to challenge the mainstream view. I haven't seen him in pre-season but last season he was electric. Great feet in a team where great feet really matter.

ps - I have a picture of Countinho if you'd like to see it?

He was wide but it was against weaker teams (admittedly it's those kind of teams we play at the start). I think against the stronger teams the hole role will make it easier for him to find space and have an effect.

Y, agreed. I'd prefer Aspas for 2m cheaper I think. Yes he'll be reverse OOP (though possibly not in GW1) but at 7m he's a nice option for the Liverpool attack with their favourable start. He's also shown the ability to consistently arrive at the right time at the back post for tap-ins, something Liverpool have needed for a long time.

Having said that, I may just shun 'pool attack altogether and just double up on def with Migs/Toure

Do you mean only scored in easy games? That's true but it was true of Liverpool as a whole last year. That was his first season and Pool's first in a totally new system. I think they'll be a stronger force and I think he'll be at the heart of it (and Suarez won't).

            Something like that.

No doubt he is a talented player, but I see no reason why to pick him over Wally or Silva personally, especially when Sturridge (or maybe Aspas) are solid picks
