PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 2

With John Terry and Olivier Giroud delivering from our Gameweek 1 picks to help the Fantasy Football Scout lineup to winnings, it’s time to turn our attention to another weekend of action and assess what the PlayON player list has to offer.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a veteran, listen up for this week’s player selection.

Gameweek 2 Player Picks

Goalkeeper – Artur Boruc
A clean sheet at the Hawthorns on day one included a world class save at the death to preserve the three points for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Boruc could be busy again when Sunderland roll up to St Mary’s but Paolo Di Canio’s side relied on long-range efforts in their opener with Fulham and the Polish stopper should be up to the task of keeping them at bay. At just 7.1m on PlayON this weekend, Boruc offers an excellent route in for those contemplating Saints defensive cover.

Defender – Pablo Zabaleta
Even with injuries at the back, City will be well fancied to gain a second clean sheet of the season when they face newly promoted Cardiff on Sunday. Fresh from a new four-year deal, Zabaletta will be a key figure in Manuel Pellegrini’s defence and, having displayed his attacking threat with an assist against Newcastle on Monday, looks good value at just 8.8m when you consider the other prices on offer in the City rearguard.

Midfielder – David Silva
City will also be backed to get goals in Wales. They looked fluid and potent in the Magpies drubbing and, despite the home side’s resistance, it’s difficult to see Malky MacKay’s team keeping them out. Silva opened his account in the win over Alan Pardew’s men and will go into the weekend clash full of confidence and ready to orchestrate another victory. Priced at just 8.6m in PlayON, he’s hard to ignore and looks a little more secure of a start, with rotation concerns still affecting our assessment of City’s forwards.

Forward – Nikica Jelavic
The Croatian was given the nod in the Everton attack at Carrow Road and looked spritely and threatening in the 2-2 draw. He’ll surely be handed another start at home to the Baggies this weekend and, while the likes of Kevin Mirallas and Leighton Baines demand double figure fees, Jelavic can be acquired for our strike force for just 9.0m. It rarely pays to take a PlayON gamble up top but Jelavic appears to be a risk worth taking for that price.

How To Play

Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like up to two hours before the first kick-off) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of wining your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge another player to a one-on-one game, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Gareth Southgate and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to challenge and has a 78% win rate – come and wipe the smile off our face.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open with the prize pot building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates. While we have some Fantasy Football Scout games to enter, there’s an incentive to set up your own this week.

If you set up a £2 game and get 5 players and £10 in the pot, PlayON will add an extra £5 in prize money to your game.

Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        Hi Shaylan,
We are adding alternative payment options at the moment, including Neteller and PayPal. These take some time to get in but should be live over the next few months. At the moment, you can play using debit and credit cards.

        HI Mattyrobinson,
PlayON is weekly fantasy football so it's a brand new game each week. You are at no disadvantage by missing last week - it's a brand new game this week and you get a brand new team of 11 players each week. Every week is a wildcard.

just to add - we have an algorithm that reprices players each week so it's a brand new challenge each week too. We enable you to play for free or for cash and you can take people on one-on-one or enter multiplayer games - the pots are already over £1,000 for this weekend and rising..

The red players symbolise injured players - I see Aguero is marked as injured currently so I will take a look at this.
Our new site which is due to launch in the next few weeks makes this a lot clearer - see the link below for a peak at the new designs

        Hi Ryan,
Yes anyone can play and we can process card payments from almost every country in the world. There are a few countries that we cannot accept payments from due to regulations - US, Turkey, Norway, Hong Kong and a few others - but most people should be able to deposit and play for the cash.

For a bit of fun I'm going to guess how many points each of my players will get for GW2 (ignoring bonus).

Boruc - 7pts. A clean sheet and 1pt for saves.

Zabaleta - 9pts. A clean sheet and an assist.
Toure - 1pt. No clean sheet, two goals conceded.
Chester - 2pts. No cleanie and one goal conceded.

Walcott - 10pts. A goal and an assist but no cleanie.
    Oscar - 2pts.
Silva - 6pts. An assist and clean sheet.
    Mirallas - 8pts. A goal and a clean sheet.

    Benteke - 6pts. One goal.
    Soldado - 6pts. One goal.
Lambert - 9pts. One goal and an assist.

Totting up gives me 66 points (ignoring captaincy and bonus points).

What do you guys think? Just a bit of fun.

Since the January Wildcard came in, I've been a big believer in playing your other WC in the first Int'l break, the key benefits being:

    1. You've had a chance to see who is starting and who is performing allowing you to save money in certain areas and invest it in others.
    2. There are more active FPL players early on so player prices fluctuate more allowing you to accrue team value early on.
    3. Allows you to get on the top-performing players early (e.g. VDV and Michu in past seasons) before they shoot up in price.

If you don't play it at this point, when is the best time to use it and why? The only time I've really regretted not having it was two seasons ago when there was a mega-double GW at the end. But even then I still won my mini league (by, er, about 5 points...).

I always think the best time to use it is when everyone else is - because more transfers mean more price rises, as well as the other points you mention. Certainly last year this was the first international break - not sure it'll be the same this year, though.

All depends on the condition of your team. I use the Wildcard as an emergency call.

A lot of players in the top 10 used it before GW4 last year. All used it in the first 10 GWs. Looks like hopping on bandwagons early is important, however this year I've not seen any huge surprise bandwagons. The ones who have done well have a blank gw3 which tempers interest in them. So might as well hold until you have to use it.

If this continues I am very keen to save my wc for the FA Cup inflicted DGWs in the spring.

Agreed - It's obviously hard to tell after 1 GW, but I feel like the guys at FPL towers have not underpriced to many assets (MID/FWD assets at least) this year (though have arguably overpriced a few).

Huddlestone and Livermore starting for Hull makes me worried. They could trouble Norwich.

Turner Chester Collins decision still a toughie. Half thinking of going with Chester ahead of Turner now.

Think thud and Livermore strengthen the defence. more composure and control in midfield. And yes, Thud's long balls look like a good starting point for attacks. Pity that I anticipate he'll be assisting assistets or I would consider him. As it is, a Hull defender looks more viable now. Might have to switch Brayford for Chester.

New bonus system suggests yes. There was an usually high number of CS's last weekend though, so it'll be interesting to see what happens in a "normal" GW.

    Chesney/Boruc
    Terry Collins Toure (Brayford, Mbiwa)
    Walcott Silva Mirallas Nolan (Morrison)
    Soldado Dzeko Sturridge

I don't get why anyone would pick Boruc over Mignolet, besides if you're really desperate to get RVP in and need the extra millon.

He was poor at the start cause he was a bit overwhelmed, but he got better and better in the game with a magnificent save. And still, it's still Liverpool, look at their CS last season.

Any thoughts on this team for GW 2

    Mig (Davis)

    Coleman,Shaw,Turner,Zab (Toure)

    Hazard,Walcot,Snodgrass,Nolan (Morrison)

    RVP,Lambert (Anelka)

1.4 in the bank, would love to add Soldado to the forward line, but that would leave
me with a weak midfield, thinking about using the WC next week.

        Toure out Collins in
        Hazard out Silva in
        Anelka out Soldado in
        Walcott out 7m mid in

Does the team look okay? This is the best I can do with Anelka out and having already taken a -4 hit.:

      Boruc,
      Toure, Coleman, Chester, Murner,
      Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho, Mirallas,
      RVP, Sturridge.

Davis, Morrison, Brayford, Anelka. (0.4 bank)

      Thoughts appreciated.

      Hazard > Mirallas

      Anekla > Cisse

I know cisse is a punt but could be a good differential for next 4-6 GW's.

      Rest of team is;

      Mig, 4.0

      Shaw Clichy Turner (A.Cole Rat)

      Lampard Walcott Silva 4.5

      Soldado Lambert

I like Cisse as a punt. Won't be doing it myself, but I can see it paying off. Rest of the team is solid so having Cisse not perform isn't going to be a big hit.

I was a bit hasty, possibly an idiot, for taking a 12 point hit for this team. However, it's relatively similar to some WC teams bandied about--same names, give or take one or two. To me, 12 points is less painful than a WC used too early, but should I activate to wipe out the hits.

How many points equal a WC? 12? 16? Less?

      GW2:
      Boruc (Mignolet)
      Coleman Zabaleta Shaw (Reid, Chester)
      Hazard Walcott Mirallas Snodgrass (Kim)
      Soldado Giroud Sturridge

      I substituted:

      Kos to Coleman
      Ivan to Zabaleta
      Olsson to Shaw
      Lukaku to Sturridge
