Scout Scribbles – Ozil the Gunners Architect

Mesut Ozil grabs a goal and assist in Arsenal’s win over Napoli. Ramires bags a brace as Juan Mata returns to the Chelsea first XI against Steaua Bucharest. Robbie Brady is sidelined for four weeks due to hernia surgery, Sergio Aguero and David Silva are back in time for City’s clash with Bayern this evening, while Rio Ferdinand is out for United due to a groin problem:

Ozil Steers Gunners to Victory

Arsene Wenger made just a couple of changes to his side for last night’s home win over Napoli. Fit-again Tomas Rosicky made an immediate return to the XI, while Mikel Arteta also started for the Gunners after emerging from the bench in each of the last couple of league encounters. The hosts had Mesut Ozil to thank for yet another commanding display as Wenger’s side go from strength to strength – the German fired a superb opener courtesy of an Aaron Ramsey assist before teeing up Olivier Giroud for the second.

After the game, Wenger discussed the options afforded by Arteta’s return to midfield. Having taken the decision to bench Jack Wilshere, the Gunners boss partnered the Spaniard with Mathieu Flamini, allowing Ramsey to move into the attacking midfield three alongside Ozil and Rosicky:

“Of course it was difficult (to rest Wilshere). But I do not want to overload him. He comes back for a long time, he has given a lot on Saturday, and I decided that [to leave him out] very late today. With him I am a little bit more cautious than I was before….You cannot play with 11 players with all the games we have in front of us. It is important that I rotate without losing the balance of the team. When Cazorla comes back, Podolski, Chamberlain, we have of course options in midfield. Tonight I played Flamini and Arteta because Flamini had a job to do on Hamsik a lot, and he did that very well. Napoli are very dangerous going forward on counter-attacking, and I felt we stopped them very well from doing that.”

The Scout Says: While Ramsey’s ever-growing legion of Fantasy owners will be more than happy with a more advanced berth, Wenger is clearly looking to utilise the strength and depth of his squad across all competitions. Flamini’s arrival has certainly given the Arsenal boss a real dilemma in central midfield, though, and his defensive positioning has provided Ramsey with the chance to bomb forward and rack up the returns in recent weeks. Certainly, the Welshman’s form is simply too good for Wenger to omit him from the XI, leaving Arteta and Flamini to battle it out for the other role in the double-pivot unless Wenger utilises Ramsey in a more advanced berth until the likes of Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott return from injury. Wilshere’s brief appearance last night suggests he is set to return to the first XI at West Brom this weekened, though, with youngster Serge Gnabry also in contention for the right wing role after he was rested against the Italians last night.

Ramires at the Double

Chelsea bounced back from their shock home defeat to Basel by hammering Steaua Bucharest last night. Juan Mata was handed a start after impressing from the bench against Spurs on Saturday, Andre Schurrle kept the role on the left due to Eden Hazard’s ankle injury, while Oscar took up the other spot in the attacking midfield three as Ramires partnered Frank Lampard in the centre of the park. The latter two shared three goals between them in the 4-0 win, with Ramires scoring twice, while an own goal from the home side also bolstered the scoreline.

After the match, Jose Mourinho complimented both Mata and Schurrle’s performances after the pair impressed on rare starts for the Blues:

“Mata played the no. 10 position and the no. 7 position and he played very good with the ball as he always does, and he is playing very good without the ball like he never did. This was Schurrle’s best position, on the left . Other matches he played on the right where he was trying to deliver but he is a different player than on the right. He was a lot in the game, getting the ball at his feet and in space to attack the defender and he was very strong. I understand Andre Schurrle was man of the match from UEFA but I am very happy with every one of my players.”

The Scout Says: Having now earned his manager’s praise in each of the last two games, Mata may well have turned the corner in his quest for a regular role under Mourinho. With two starts in the opening six league fixtures, he has now dropped down to 9.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game from an initial cost of 10.5 – after two superb seasons as a Fantasy asset, he’s slowly returning to our radars and has Norwich, Cardiff, Newcastle and West Brom in the next five to profit from. If he earns another start on Sunday at Carrow Road, many he be willing to take a punt, though Mourinho’s rest and rotation policy will always be a nagging worry. With Mourinho starting Hazard in every league game so far, Schurrle’s chances of regular time in his favoured role on the left have been minimal – the Belgian is confident of returning in time to face the Canaries, suggesting the summer signing may struggle to retain his starting berth against Chris Hughton’s side.

Torres Worry for Jose

Fernando Torres lasted just 10 minutes of last night’s match before being replaced by Samuel Eto’o up front. The Spaniard – who is, of course, banned for Sunday’s trip to Norwich after his dismissal at Spurs last weekend – now faces an anxious wait for news of any potential injury. After the game, Mourinho, who has recently lost midfielder Marco Van Ginkel for six months with anterior cruciate knee ligament damage, revealed:

“Our doctor is confident it is not a big injury like Van Ginkel’s, but we will have to wait for the scans. Torres knows that he doesn’t play against Norwich [due to suspension]. Then he knows he doesn’t go with the national team so he has time before the next game he can play, against Cardiff. Let’s see the scan. It is a pity for the guy because he is in a very good moment physically and he played fantastic against Tottenham, and he played today because he deserved to start. It is a pity but that is football.”

The Scout Says: Any length of absence leaves Mourinho with just Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba as recognised forwards as the Blues have no recall clause for Romelu Lukaku at Everton. Given that Ba has featured just once in the league this season, Eto’o certainly looks the likeliest to benefit, though Mourinho also demonstrated against United back in Gameweek 2 that he could utilise Schurrle in the lone forward position. With a kind upcoming schedule, though, the Cameroon international, at 8.9 in FPL and with an ownership less than 1%, could be a decent differential if Torres is indeed set for a spell on the sidelines.

Brady Sidelined by Hernia Op

Robbie Brady’s Fantasy owners were dealt a significant blow yesterday after Hull confirmed their in-form midfielder will be sidelined for the next month after undergoing a hernia operation yesterday. The club’s Head of Medical Services, Rob Price, explained:

“It’s actually a condition that we’ve been managing for around six weeks now. Robbie has managed to play through that and been particularly successful despite being in a reasonable amount of pain. The manager has been very good in terms of limiting Robbie’s training sessions and has brought him off at times in games when he was still able to perform. We had a sit down between Robbie, the manager and myself to make a decision on when it would be best to have the surgery and Robbie decided that he couldn’t really continue to play with the pain he was having..We’re hopeful that he will be back playing sometime within around four weeks.”

The Scout Says: Currently sitting third in the FPL midfield standings after racking up 40 points in the opening six Gameweeks, Brady’s loss will hit his 12% of FPL owners hard. The Republic of Ireland international has been subbed off for three consecutive league games with the problem but was expected to play through the pain barrier for next weekend’s home clash against Villa – as a result, he had received more than 90,000 transfers in already this week. Steve Bruce now looks set to be without Brady until the Gameweek 10 home clash against Sunderland – similarly priced options such as Ross Barkley or Peter Whittingham could be set for extra investment as Fantasy managers scour the budget bracket for replacements.

Aguero and Silva Fit for Bayern Showdown

Manuel Pellegrini was handed a huge boost ahead of City’s home game against Bayern this evening after Sergio Aguero and David Silva were passed fit. The former was ruled out of Saturday’s shock loss at Villa, while Silva has missed the last five in all competitions after picking up a problem on international duty but their manager revealed at yesterday’s press briefing:

“David is in the squad. I think he can at least play some minutes. Sergio is fit and he is also on the list.”

The Scout Says: While the duo’s return is welcome relief for tonight’s crucial clash against Pep Guardiola’s side, Pellegrini will be eager to bounce back on the domestic front after losing the momentum gained from the Gameweek 5 Manchester derby thrashing of United. City certainly don’t have an easy time of it in the league – in the next six they welcome Everton and Spurs to the Etihad, while trips to West Ham and Chelsea will test an away record that has garnered a single point in three attempts. Judging by Pellegrini’s words, Silva may well be tentatively eased back into the fold but, bearing in mind that his decision to omit Aguero last weekend was taken with this evening’s game in mind, it’s clear that European duties will continue to be factor in his domestic thinking.

Ferdinand Groin Worry for United

David Moyes has omitted Rio Ferdinand from United’s clash against Shakhtar Donetsk this evening after the centre-half picked up “a slight groin problem” after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by West Brom.

The Scout Says: Ferdinand’s potential absence affords Nemanja Vidic owners greater optimism ahead of Saturday’s trip to basement-dwellers Sunderland. United had failed to concede at home prior to the Baggies clash but Moyes’ decision to rest both Vidic and Patrice Evra backfired spectacularly – given his side’s poor start, it seems highly unlikely he’ll omit the Serbian for a second successive Gameweek, with Ferdinand’s injury merely underling how crucial Vidic will be as the champions attempt to get back to winning ways against the basement-dwellers.

Hernandez Nearing Swans Return

Michael Laudrup is hoping to have Pablo Hernandez back in the Swansea fold for Thursday’s Europa League game against St Gallen. The Spaniard has failed to appear since picking up a thigh injury against West Brom last month but his manager has revealed:

“Pablo has been training for five days or so. Hopefully, he should be more or less ready to go back in with the group this week and he will come back into contention.”

Laudrup has also talked up the prospects of youngster Alejandro Pozuelo for the season ahead, whilst admitting he is keen to ease him tentatively into the first-team:

“I think he can do here what Coutinho has done at Liverpool. I remember when Coutinho arrived from Inter he had a lot to learn, but now he is one of the most important players at Liverpool. With time, Pozuelo can do the same here because he has the same ability with the ball, same ability in finding space, being good one-on-one and having very good vision, and we know he has two good feet because we don’t know if he is right or left footed. But with a player like that, he’s only 21, we have to bring him forward easily and by doing that he will be another very important player for us.”

The Scout Says: With a goal, two assists and three bonus points in just three appearances, Hernandez was quick out the blocks and his early form suggested the winger was set to step up for the Swans this term after an indifferent debut season. Back down to his initial FPL price of 6.0 after injury curtailed a substantial bandwagon over the first international break, his imminent return coincides with a string upcoming schedule for the Welsh outfit. With Sunderland, West Ham, Cardiff, Stoke and Fulham from Gameweek 7 onwards, he could come into the reckoning for those looking for a mid-price route into the Swansea midfield. Whilst Laudrup is clearly a fan of Pozuelo, the youngster has yet to start a league match and has been utilised as a sub in each of the last five league matches. Certainly, he’s one to monitor right now but is unlikely to come into contention as a regular in the short-term, at least.

Somehow we seem to be coping despite several injuries though.

In seasons past not having Arteta, Cazorla, Walcott, Diaby fully fit would have provided ample explanation for some underwhelming performances...

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

Can you succeed at FPL by taking lots of hits?

Brutus619 and I are having an ongoing discussion about this issue this season. He advocates many hits to get the key players each week. I advocate few hits with around 7-10 a season being an optimum number.

Here’s more of Brutus619’s thoughts on it and so far he is doing well with his hits.

What do you think? Can many hits over the season really pay off? Or is it short term gain for long term pain?

Considering how small the gap is between the top 100k and the rest I am reluctant to take hits. It depends on the situation I suppose if you are looking at an obvious transfer eg Michu and Van Persie last season you should take a hit or to get 11 out you should take a hit . I am holding onto Mirallas at the min in order to avoid taking a hit.

I would use hits for the following and works well:
      - Double gameweeks
      - Can't field 11 because of injuries and suspensions
      - A player about to tank it in value ie. Lukaku with Chelsea at the start of the season.

If that means i take over 20 hits in a season so be it. Generally I think hits at the start of the season pay off more because you are going to get a larger increase in your team value. Later in the season value doesn't matter so much.

There is only a long term gain to it if the hit is well planned. Taking hits to chase last weeks points is pointless and through it will give you excellent team value, come Jan-Feb when it is time to climb the ranks you may have too much to catch up.

I do take hits, but only where there are injuries or players who are certain not to get points. I have taken 12pts total hits so far this season, but only due to not being able to field a full 11 two GWs in a row.

Something I do factor in is the value of the player, having e.g. a 9m striker injured, rotated or a doubt - I much rather take a hit for someone guaranteed a start with a chance of a goal or assist - even if there is a 4.5m back up. Want my bench to be there ready to go at 11.31 Sat morning, not have to use it when setting my line-up Fri night!

Gosh, they should really give me more stuff to do at work....

Yes, they definitely can. I mean how many hits you take depends on so many factors, the most important part is to judge each hit individually, some have a good chance of paying off, others don't. Let's not kid ourselves, luck is also a factor, as well as captaincy.

Overall though, I'm a firm believer that the best way (in terms of points, not fun) is to minimize hits and do late transfers. Playing conservatively, in other words.

I think what people forget to consider is the actual odds of a hit paying off or not. They just look at the result in terms of points and use this to judge if the hit was okay or not, which in my opinion is the wrong way of going about things.

For instance, taking a hit to do Michu > Amalfitano last GW would have, in hindsight, paid off. Does that make it a "good hit"?

let's see the most badwagoned hit from last gw

soldado-rooney , people who kept soldado get 2pts adventage , i am not saying that hit wouldn't pay off at long run

Taking hits depends on ur choices u make at the start.
Last year's winner took 4 hits & runner up took 2 hits all season. So choosing the right players at the start of season is pretty vital, but if we bottle it at the start then taking hits becomes essential in order to catch up with the leaders. But it has to be done with calculated risk.

It barely pays off, but saying this I took a 12 point hit to get Baines Özil Arnie and Lukaku(C) can´t really complain as Lukaku brought all the points I needed but can´t help thinking that I was expecting more from the other 3. Saying this, yes Arnie is still a punt and ofc I´m relying on Baines and Özil to bring the points in long term.

What I will say is many people have almost an obsession with not taking hits, this believe me is an error. If I have a problem that nees sorting, or a change than will increase point returns for the future then -4 means nothing to me. Press the button and move on.

A lot of people seem to also somehow forget or not realise that hits for DGW players are usually halved by their extra mins on the pitch within a given GW. I don't ever look to get someone in a DGW who on a usual basis is unlikely to contribute e.g. Mark Noble. But aside from that I think hits for a DGW is usually fine as long as you plan a way to get rid of the players you bring in without another hit on top.

as i see it if you take hit a week (2 transfers dealing with -4 per GW) gives you a -152 on 38 games.
Let's say as well those hits that you took came with much higher points for example currently you got Walcott & RvP and lets say their combined points are 10 and exchange them to Ozil & Rooney with combined points of 20 less the 4pt hit that you took which comes to 16pts. combined thus hit well taken.

i think this cannot be generalized. some have great results with not taking a single hit during the whole season. however, they are almost certain to carry deadwood at some point and losing a lot of team value. i've tried that, it's ok. but this season i've decided hits are ok for the long term. when i know i want some player for the long term, i'm gonna take a hit, not wait a week. this gives me adrenaline and peace of mind at the same time. worked great so far, but i've been lucky i admit. 5 hits already and 26k rank. imo, the hits are alright.

I think looking at what successful players are doing wrt hits is confusing cause and effect here. Hits are justified when your team is in shambles and you cannot field 11 players for the GW. If you are unlucky and have lots of injuries, taking lots of hits is probably a sound strategy, but you are not likely to do extremely well overall due to your poor luck.

Players who are lucky (and let's face it, luck is a factor in fpl) will largely avoid situations where they have to take hits, plan ahead for DGWs instead, and overall do better.

I think looking at Brutus ranking the past 3 years tells its own story, a few -4s yeah its allowed, the odd -8 when that knee jerks... yeah its happened all of us. But I will never ever be able to advocate a -12 or -16. You must have a serious lack of foresight to put yourself in a scenario where u need to take those hits. But yes Transfers are extremely fun. Think Sanchez nailed it when he said how is it the week after u played your wildcard your still 2 or 3 transfers away from your ideal team! 🙂

I don't understand why this is being discussed as some weird intangible and subjective topc, it is not a matter of opinion whether one should take hits or not. It is a simple math problem whether the expected score of your team is higher by more than four points after the possible hit.

When I say simple I mean simple in sense of the actual math. Assigning the correct probabilities to different outcomes is obviously tough and something that in the long run decides whether you finish 60k or 6k.

At the start of the season I was making two transfers every week, getting in the player who looked set for a major haul. It did not work out.

I remember getting Aguero for a hit for his fixture vs Hull at home, that flopped. The next week I got in RVP for Crystal Palace at home, that flopped as well. I eventually gave up as my rank had plummeted 600k over this hit-taking period. Since wildcarding in GW5 I have yet to take a another hit (and don't plan on doing so for some time!) and my rank has climbed 300k.

I don't have any regrets over taking these hits cause they certainly could have payed off big time if everything went as expected, but alas, fantasy football is a hard thing to predict at times!

I agree in general - hits and wildcards early are a decent idea, somewhere around 5-6 games in when you get some sort of idea of what players are regulars/on rotation etc. and you also have a clear idea of what players you consider essentials from this point in. You want to get to that settled point asap. Bandwagons have had time to form as well.

Brutus's hits worked well for GW6, but were spectacularly unsuccessful in the previous GWs, and he's still only 400k. I would say that overall his hits have not been a success. They can work sometimes, but he has taken far too many.

Remember, it's not whether the incoming player outscores the outgoing one by 4 points *this week*, it's about whether they outscore them *over however long they're in your team*. Be that one week or a whole season.

I guess it depends on what you are trying to achieve.

I know that my chances of winning the FPL overall are less than having a 3some with Natalie Portman and Liv Tyler... in other words - zero.

Wanting to win my Mini-League, well that's a different story. Each year it has been won by guys taking hits on a more than regular basis, 8- 20 points is common in a GW.

But seeing the overall history of last years champ in the FPL, hits are seriously limited by most of the big players... so that is what I believe makes my mind up. I will take a hit for the right reasons, follow a form player or two, swop out high priced injuries.

The key thing to remember here is... purely to win your ML - every 4 points you have on someone is a FT 🙂

I'd still risk it. He's got to be good for a point or two, and you never know if they park the bus, or he picks up a penalty save. Or some more extra appearance points...

Plus if you have PSG players you're hedging your bets if they don't score.

I've switched Courtois for Proto vs Olympiacos

Everybody does that, you can't win all the games as you've said. I just think that with the form they are in now, they are more likely to do well over the next 3 GWs than if they were in worse form. Being on a good run doesn't make it more likely to draw or lose, quite the opposite.

Someone posted an excellent post on injured/suspended players to watch the other day, I looked at some of the players that dropped last night and I would put foward some additions:

Snodgrass down to 6.1 - stats are good, and with Pilkington back I am going to invest once the fixtures get better, has already had a cameo in my team but I expect him to do well this year

Lamela down to 8.6 - just keep dropping until you find your feet baby, drop drop drop.

Mirallas down to 7.3 - surely 'due', without sounding horrible, a GW or two out with a sprained ankle might drop his price even further. Another one that has been on my watchlist since pre-season (and featured first couple of GWs)

Navas down to 8.6 - I think he will keep dropping with all the casuals switching to Yaya. Undoubted talent and I reckon he will come good once the city strikers find their feet. There will always be the rotation risk though.

    Thoughts?

Folks, I'm interested in seeing what kind of correlation there is between team value, points and wildcard usage. If you could take ten seconds to fill out a quick poll, I'll post the results at the end of the week. Obviously it'll just judge correlation and not causation, but I think it could be interesting.

I'll only repost this once more (tomorrow), and I'll post up the results on Friday. If you've already replied, thanks! I have a decent sample size already, but more data is better data.

Benteke is the better player at the moment if that's what you're asking.

I think Benteke is the better player overall right now, but it looks like Lukaku will get the chance to prove him wrong this season.

    My current team

    Migs. Davis
    Zab.. Vidic.. Enrique.. Chester.. Turner
    Lampard.. Michu.. Brady.. Barkley... Moses
    Lukaku.. RVP(c)... Giroud (vc)

I think my team looks good, just have not be getting points.

Any obvious flaws people can see?

Is it worth Lampard > Ramsey ?

Why are people saying HBA might not start at the weekend? What's the news there? Thought he got subbed on Monday as he was rubbish.

Rubbish performances tend to put players out of the starting XI for the next game...

Not when they're the potentially the best player though...hardly a consistent rule. Also worth considering that HBA played against Everton on the left, rather than the right (where he has put his best performances in).

If its just idle speculation on here then it might be right, who knows, but as long as I know that's all it is.

Not so much he was rubbish, he doesn't track back which is actually Pardews fault as he has accepted this as part of his game. The hammering they were getting forced a change. I think he will certainly start the next game. His attitude reminds me of Taarabt very much, talented but lazy.

This^ He needs to play in the hole in a 4-2-3-1 with a very good defensive double pivot or he'll be a liability.

Behind Remy there maybe hope for castle but their manager is hopeless.

To Wildcard or Not?? (Dead weight in CAPS)

    Cech (Boruc)
    Nastasic, Dawson, Coleman (CHESTER, CHAMBERS)
    BARFA, Silva, Ozil, BRADY (Mirallas?)
    Giroud, Soldaldo & BONY?

Im very tempted to wildcard, but know rightly ill wildcard, then internationals will end up making it a waste or something!!

I'd say do Brady to a cheap nailed-on mid, even if its for a -4, just to ensure you get a full team out this week. Then WC over the international break

Terry has been the nailed on guy. Louise has played 2 of the 3 games he's been fit for and made errors in both. So unfortunately I think Louise will have to wait until he shows some consistency of starts before I take the plunge. I'll get JT soon.

I do like the look of him, but he's not going to displace a Michu/Hernandez/De Guzman anytime soon.

I think for now he's just an impact sub in the league, with starts in the cups. If you have injuries then get rid. If not, he has low ownership so isn't likely to drop too much more.

    Yep, Terry.
Terry has played every game so far, Luiz a handful. Terry far more nailed.
Terry did play CL last night, but imagine that he will start at weekend because he is not involved in Internationals.
Terry better pick anyway regardless of Luiz playing time.
