Feyenoord 1 Liverpool 1
A Gerrard goal was not enough to earn Liverpool the silverware in Rotterdam but saved Liverpool from defeat in their final pre-season game. Gerrard slid the ball in after good work from Babel who appeared as sub on the hour mark. Liverpool’s starting lineup was strong and a good indication of their side that will face Villa on Saturday. Torres did start on the bench but Kuyt may have got the nod today as it was an opportunity to play in front of his former fans in Rotterdam, so we shouldn’t read too much into this. Elsewhere however, Rafa could leave this lineup untouched although Finnan could come into contention at right-back.
Liverpool Lineup: Reina, Riise, Agger, Carragher, Arbeloa, Kewell (Babel 58), Gerrard (Sissoko 90), Alonso, Pennant (Torres 65), Voronin (Benayoun 80), Kuyt.
Newcastle 1 Sampdoria 0
Alan Smith had a dream debut at St James’ Park, firing the winning goal from a Geremi corner. Smith made his debut up front with Viduka, also playing his first game for Newcastle having missed pre-season on duty with Australia. Rozehnal, Taylor and Butt all returned from injury and got through 90-minutes while Geremi captained the side in midfield with NZogbia employed at left-back. Big Sam’s side didn’t come out of this game unscathed however, with Shay Given limping off with a thigh injury after just 38 minutes. He will have a scan later this week but seems doubtful for the clash at the Reebok next weekend.
Newcastle Lineup: Given (Harper 38), Carr, Taylor, Rozehnal, N’Zogbia, Solano (Martins 46), Butt, Geremi, Milner (Ramage 75), Smith, Viduka (Ameobi 46).
