Matt Taylor has finally sealed a switch to Bolton Wanderers after they agreed an undisclosed fee with Portsmouth.
The move looked on the cards just over a week ago, as reported here, when Megson revealed that the transfer was near to completion. Today the deal went through with Taylor signing a three-and-a-half year deal at the Reebok.
In fantasy terms, Taylor is classified as a midfielder this season after offering incredible value as a defender playing in midfield last. He is currently valued at 6.1 million in the Fantasy Premier League game, that’s a drop of 0.9 from his initial 7.0 million valuation. In the Fantasy League games meanwhile, he’s valued at 4.0 million along with the likes of Barry and Jenas.
At first glance, it would appear that Taylor offers little value. However, it could be that Taylor is pushed right up at the sharp end for his new club. In Bolton’s existing 4-3-3 system there’s every chance that he could be employed on the left side of the front three in support of Davies. Guthrie and Stelios lined up wide of Davies against Blackburn so those places are certainly up for grabs. If that is the case, with his proven eye for goal, crossing ability and set-piece delivery, you’d have to say that Taylor may well show some promise.
The alternative of course is that Tayor will slot in at left-back but with Gardner and Samuel available in that position, Megson clearly has cover in that area. A switch of formation to 4-4-2 or to wing-backs, a system which Taylor was employed in at Portsmouth, is also a possibility.
Taylor was recovering from a back injury whilst at Portsmouth but is expected to be in the squad for Bolton’s trip to Newcastle where he could make his debut.
