Middlesbrough were once again the victims of a late goal as they slipped to a defeat in their latest encounter in the Algarve Cup. Here’s the notes on last night’s friendly with Vitoria Guimaraes.
Vitoria Guimaraes 1 Middlesbrough 0
Despite creating numerous chances and having the better of possession, Southgate’s boys again struggled to find the net and eventually fell victim to a late goal.
Southgate started with a 4-5-1 with Alves employed as the lone striker. It was the Brazilian who wasted Boro’s best chances in the first half with Johnson looking very bright. Indeed Johnson was the only player to keep his place as Southgate deployed a new look side for the second half. The winger, currently being monitored by Rangers according to reports, continued to torment the opposition but his efforts could not help to break the deadlock.
Boro eventually fell defeat as a result of a wonderful strike from a late free kick.
The form of Johnson is certainly worth keeping an eye on. If Southgate keeps hold of him then it would seem likely that he will get more opportunities this season. Downing was unavailable for this game but even on his return, Southgate could possibly play both on either flank.
The other significant note from this game is that Turnbull was given the nod for the full game in goal. Southgate did not issue a number one shirt to either Jones or Turnbull when squad numbers were announced and clearly the slot is still up for grabs.
