Saturday saw the usual avalanche of friendly matches including a testimonial for Solskjaer, the first matches in the Emirates Cup at er…the Emirates and Liverpool’s encounter with Rangers at Ibrox.

Here’s all the teams and notes from yesterday’s clashes…

Man United 1 Espanyol 0

United claimed the win in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s testimonial thanks to a late goal from Frazier Campbell.

Tevez was particular bright in a first half that United although Nani, making his first pre-season start, had the best opportunity, firing wide after Scholes’ chip had hit a post.

Kuszczak, Brown, Silvestre and Campbell were introduced in the second half and they were followed by Solskjaer in the 68th minute – welcomed by a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd. He could well have capped the day with a goal but was denied by a smart save from the Espanyol keeper. It was left to Campbell to win the game, clipping past the keeper on 82 minutes.

Despite this being a testimonial game, Ferguson’s lineup did have one particular point of interest, namely the return of Ferdinand in defence after he had missed the last two friendly encounters. Neville sat this one out with a calf injury so Simpson took the right back spot.

Campbell has been a regular in pre-season for United and Ferguson has confirmed that the striker will not be leaving the club to go out on loan this season. That would seem to indicate that Campbell could play some part in United’s Premiership season. Certainly with 7 subs to choose from on the bench, you’d expect him to make regular substitute appearances.

United visit Peterborough on Tuesday next.

Man United vs Espanyol:
Van der Sar (Kuszczak 46); Simpson, Ferdinand (Brown 46), Vidic (Evans 62), Evra (Silvestre 46); Gibson (O’Shea 62), Fletcher, Scholes, Nani (Campbell 46); Giggs, Tevez (Solskjaer 68)

Arsenal 0 Juventus 1

The Gunners suffered only the second ever defeat at the Emirates thanks to David Trezeguet’s 38th-minute goal in this Emirates Cup encounter.

Wenger is clearly looking to rotate his lineup over the course of the two weekend games with Arsenal’s young guns given an opportunity in this one. They performed well in the first half but began to tire. The likes of Gallas, Adebayor, Diaby, Walcott and Sagna took the field in the second half which certainly appeared to give Arsenal greater impetus. However it wasn’t enough for Wenger’s men to peg back the Juventus goal, despite efforts from Bendtner and Adebayor.

Wenger has confirmed that a more experienced Arsenal side will take the field against Madrid on Sunday. Toure is set to miss out as he continues to recover from malaria while Fabregas is still resting after Euro 2008.

Arsenal vs Juventus:
Fabianski, J Hoyte (Sagna 60), Gibbs, Senderos (Gallas 46), Djourou, Eboue (60), Denilson, Ramsey (Diaby 46), Wilshire (Walcott 60), Vela (Adebayor 46), Bendtner.

Rangers 0 Liverpool 4

Rafa partnered Keane and Torres for the first time at Ibrox and liked what he saw as Liverpool coasted to an impressive victory over Rangers.Goals from Torres, Alonso, Benayoun and a first goal for Ngog were enough to give the Premiership side the win.

Keane and Torres looked bright in their 45 minutes together and it was Torres who opened the scoring – tapping in after Plessis’ dipping shot was spilled by the Rangers keeper. The rest of Liverpool’s goals came in the second period with substitute Ngog getting things moving with a fun run and finish.

More changes from Bentez then followed and it was one of the subs, Nemeth, who set up the third goal. His shot was palmed away into the path of Benayoun who volleyed it home. Nemeth was then upended in the box on 70 minutes with Alonso firing it home.

The starting lineup was strong, with the back four perhaps Rafa’s first choice. There is talk of Carragher starting at right-back come the season kick-off to accommodate both Agger and Skrtel in the centre but there has certainly been no indication of that so far in pre-season.

Ngog’s goal and the emergence of Nemeth who certainly looks very useful, will give Rafa food for thought. He certainly appears to have more options all over the field this season and with news of renewed hope on the Gareth Barry front, Rafa’s strongest side seems set to be a mystery for a little while longer.

Liverpool take on Valerenga on Tuesday with Lazio to follow that next Saturday. Those two games should give us an even better idea of Rafa’s preferred formation and lineup.

Liverpool vs Rangers:

Cavalieri, Dossena, Carragher (Hyypia 45), Skrtel (Agger 45), Arbeloa (Darby 45), Benayoun, Gerrard (Insua 58), Plessis (Alonso 45), Kuyt (Spearing 58), Torres (Ngog 45), Keane (Nemeth 58).

Hibernian 2 Middlesbrough 3

Boro came from behind to seal the win with goals from fantasy favourites Wheater and Alves.

It was a miserable first half for Boro, losing the first goal and their skipper, Julio Arca, after just 25 minutes. Arca was stretchered off after suffering a heavy challenge but was apparently walking fine after the game so shouldn’t suffer any repercussions from the knock.

The second half saw Boro fall further behind courtesy of a second goal for Hibernian’s Steven Fletcher. That proved the catalyst for a number of changes from Southgate as Johnson and Alves took to the pitch. It took just 30 seconds for the Brazilian striker to make an impact, heading home O’Neil’s cross. Johnson then made his contribution, floating in the corner that led to Wheater’s headed equaliser. Another substitute, Rhys Williams, then floated in a cross for Alves to win the game with a diving header.

Southgate called on Tuncay and Downing in his starting lineup for the first time in pre-season but Johnson’s impact today will give him further selection posers to consider. Johnson could offer some potential as a cheap midfield fantasy signing but a starting role in Boro’s midfield is by no means assured. Aliadiere and Tuncay are all vying for the right midfield position and O’Neil could also be considered for a wide role should Boro succeed in a bid for Reading’s James Harper.

Up front things are a lot simpler with Alves showing his class today with a brace. He is a certain starter throughout the season and as such, a very decent potential signing from Boro along with Downing and Wheater who are also untouchable. Tuncay would seem favourite to partner the Brazilian, although Mido is another option.

There will be more clues on offer when Boro visit Darlington on Tuesday evening.

Middlesbrough vs Hibernian:
Turnbull; Young (Williams 70), Wheater, Huth, Grounds; Aliadiere, O’Neil (Walker 77), Arca (Digard 29), Downing (Bennett 70); Tuncay (Johnson 63), Mido (Alves 63)

Birmingham 1 Fulham 1

Fulham had to settle for a draw at Championship Birmingham after Seb Larsson cancelled out an early Simon Davies goal for Cottagers.

Davies finished smartly after the home sides defence pushed up for an offside that was never there. Fulham had dominated to that point with Zamora looking particularly threatening up front. The Premiership side continued to have the better of things as the half wore on but could no add to their lead.

Hodgson made one change at half-time – handing a debut to his latest signing, Stoor, at right back. The second half saw Birmingham ask more questions however, with the introduction of Marcus Bent up front causing some concern for the Fulham defence. Eventually Larsson drew them level with a calm finish from a Jereome through ball.

It was a strong Fulham side today and their lineup seems pretty settled. The midfield quartet today of Davies and Gera out wide and Murphy and Bullard in the centre, appear to be Hodgson’s preferred option. Zamora is a certain starter up front and today’s partner, Seol, will surely be replaced by Johnson if his move from Everton is completed this week. At the back the only real doubt surrounds the right full back spot with Pantsil and Stoor fighting for the shirt.

Fulham face their final pre-season game against Torino next Saturday.

Fulham vs Birmingham:
Schwarzer, Pantsil (Stoor 45), Konchesky, Hangeland, Hughes, Davies (Kallio 80), Gera, Murphy (Davis 70), Bullard (Andreasen 70), Seol (Healy 80), Zamora (Johnson 65).

Reading 1 Aston Villa 1

A goal from Gabby Agbonlahor earned O’Neill’s side a draw at the Madejski after the Premiership side had fallen behind and survived a missed penalty.

Brad Friedal, making his Villa debut, turned Hunt’s penalty away after Doyle had been felled in the box after 10 minutes. Reading did get the lead on 36 minutes however, Friedal beaten by a long distance deflected drive from Karacan.

O’Neill reacted by introducing both Reo-Coker and Agbonlahor at half-time and then turned to Young after 70 minutes with Villa still trailing. The equaliser came with 10 minutes remaining – Agbonlahor bundling the ball home from Albrighton’s cross.

In terms of O’Neill’s lineup, the big surprise was that Davies made a start alongside Laursen with Knight benched. Clearly Davies has made an incredible recovery from injury and can now be considered for the season kick-off. It was a second string midfield from Villa with Salifou and Osbourne in the centre and Routledge and Maloney out wide.

The full back situation at Vilal is a major concern. Barry was left on the bench with his move to Liverpool now resurrected and it could well be that Finnan will be involved in any deal that materialises. Reading’s Nicky Shorey is another player who could be targeted by Villa. Reading have come out and stated that Shorey will be joining a Premiership club next week and Villa certainly need a left back.

Aston Villa vs Reading:

Friedel, Gardner (Reo-Coker 45), Stieber, Laursen, Davies (Knight 2), Salifou, Osbourne (Young 62), Maloney (Delfounso 75), Routledge (Albrighton 75), Carew (Agbonlahor 45), Harewood.

Shrewsbury 0 Stoke City 1

Richard Cresswell scored his third goal of the pre-season as Stoke squeaked by League Two Shrewsbury. The Stoke striker latched onto a pass from Pugh to fire past the keeper via the post on 68 minutes.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis was once again without the likes of Fuller and Matteo, while Lawrence and Cort were also suffering knocks.

This was their fourth win of a successful pre-season for Stoke but it must be said, so far, the opposition have been either non-league or lower league. Things ramp up a little when Stoke take on Southampton on Tuesday before facing Osasuna in their final friendly next Friday.

Stoke vs Shrewsbury:
Simonsen, Griffin (Wilkinson 52), Buxton (Pugh 52), Shawcross, Dickinson; Cresswell, Whelan (Diao 52), Pulis (Wedderburn 62), Delap (Pericard 52); Sidibe (Parkin 52), Kitson (Shotton 62)

Wolves 4 Blackburn Rovers 2

Ince returned to one of his old stamping grounds but saw his side slip to a punishing defeat at the hands of their Championship opponents.

Blackburn’s defending let them down badly, despite fielding three of what is likely to be Ince’s first choice back four. Wolves took the lead after just nine minutes although Derbyshire, partnering Santa Cruz up front, quickly pulled Rovers level. He finished calmly from a Pedersen knock-down.

Wolves regained the lead shortly after, leaving it to Santa Cruz to level it once again. Tugay picked him out with a searching ball and the Rovers hitman made no mistake. He did however, injure himself in the process and was immediately replaced by Roberts.

The second half saw Wolves take control, claiming a penalty and a superb individual goal from Jarvis.

Ince’s lineup was strong once again. He was without Ooijer through illness, while Emerton and Olsson were carrying knocks. Judge was given an opportunity to impress on the right of midfield as a result of Emerton’s absence, but that aside, the Rovers lineup had a first team look to it. That will concern Ince who has now suffered three defeats in pre-season.

Fortunately the injury to Santa Cruz is not thought to be serious. He was unable to put weight on his foot after scoring the second equaliser for Rovers but Ince confirmed that he’ll need a couple of days recovery time and will be fit for the season kick-off.

Rovers play host to NAC Breda on Saturday.

Blackburn vs Wolves:
Robinson, Reid, Samba, Mokoena, Warnock (McCarthy 76), Judge (Treacy 62), Dunn (Khizanishvili 81), Tugay (Vogel 69), Pedersen, Derbyshire (Fowler 76), Santa Cruz (Roberts 28).

Sheffield Wednesday 2 Wigan 3

Wigan’s new striker Amr Zaki hit a winner on his debut as Wigan edged past Wednesday. The Egyptian striker received Camara’s pass to finish calmly to hand Bruce’s side the win.

Wigan twice took the lead in this one but were pegged back by Championship Wednesday. Both of Wigan’s opening goals came courtesy of De Ridder’s corners. King credited with the first from a Heskey header while Bramble headed the second.

The introduction of Valencia and Zaki provided Wigan with the impetus they needed to finally finish off Wedensday. Zaki providing the finish in the final minute.

Bruce started with Cattermole in midfield alongside Brown, with De Ridder on the right and Kapo out on the left. King partnered Heskey up front although it’s likely we’ll see Zaki handed a starting role next time out.

Bruce’s side take on Hibernian on Tuesday next.

Wigan vs Sheffield Wednesday:
Nash; Melchiot (Montrose 88), Boyce, Bramble , Figueroa; de Ridder (Valencia 58), Brown (Palacios 58), Cattermole (Kupisz 78), Kapo; Heskey, King (Zaki 58).

Stockport 2 Man City 2

A last minute equaliser from the spot rescued a draw for City just 48 hours after their UEFA Cup win over EB/Streymur.

Valeri Bojinov provided the major silver lining for Hughes, heading home Onuoha’s chipped cross to equalise Stockport’s opening goal minutes after replacing Caicedo. The Bulgarian’s return from injury is timely with City struggling for striking options with Benjani sidelined and Jo at the Olympics.

Stockport took the lead once again and it looked as though City were slipping to defeat before substitute Ched Evans was brought down in the box in the final minute. He stepped up to convert the penalty and earn the draw.

Hughes gave a first start to Ben Haim alongside Onuoha in central defence. Castilo, Garrido and Bianchi were also given rare starts.

Man City vs Stockport:

Schmeichel, Onuoha, Ben Haim (Mee 57), Garrido (Williamson 80), Logan, Hamann, Ireland, Castillo (Sturridge 57), Caicedo (Bojinov 73), Bianchi (Evans 57), Weiss (Fernandes 66).

Grays Athletic 2 West Ham XI 1

West Ham put their youngsters and reserves out against the Conference side but this match did have some significance in that it saw the return of Lee Bowyer.

Bowyer played just over an hour of this one, while Ethrington also stepped up his fitness with 54 minutes on the left wing.

For the record, it was Hines that got the West Ham goal offering further evidence that he could make the step up next season.

West Ham vs Grays Athletic:

Street, Spence, Eyjolfsson (Harvey 75), N’Gala, Miller, Jeffery, Bowyer (Widdowson 67), Collison (O’Neill 75), Etherington (Stanislas 54), Konstantinou (Stokes 46), Hines

Chorley 0 Bolton 2

Goals from Dzemaili and newboy Riga Mustapha earned the Trotters the win in this low key friendly.

Megson fielded a second string lineup for this game that followed the 5-0 win over Doncaster just 48 hours later.

Bolton vs Chorley:

Al Habsi, Hunt, Gardner, Basham, Meite, Dzemaili, Woolfe, Cohen, McCann, Obadeyi, Riga.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
