Two clean sheets from unlikely sources and a lack of profit from the big names, Gerrard aside, meant that Saturday’s games offered meagre returns across the board for most fantasy managers.
Here’s my notes on yesterday’s proceedings…
Blackburn 1 Hull City 1
Paul Ince was able to name an unchanged side but watched his men fall short against Phil Brown’s outfit. In truth Rovers were shackled by a Hull side that once again showed good discipline and organisation, particularly at the back where Turner and Gardner kept Santa Cruz very quiet.
My hunch to back Roberts in my picks paid off – he scored the goal and looked the most likely of the two Rovers strikers to cause problems but once Ince’s side had lost Dunn to injury at half time, Blackburn lacked any creative spark.
Brown was forced into changes with Boateng failing to recover from a thigh injury. Marney came in for him in midfield while Fagan also earned a start with Barmby dropping to the bench.
Of Hull’s players, fantasy managers still appear to be latching onto Geovanni’s potential as a budget midfielder but Turner at the back could also start earning some suitors having gained the three FPL bonus points from this one.
Injuries
David Dunn picked up an Achilles injury in the first half of this one and was replaced by Emerton at half-time. Hull lost left back Dawson to injury after 58 minutes
Fulham 1 Arsenal 0
Hodgeson was forced into one change from the side that lost to Hull on the opening day. Konchesky sidelined through injury – new signing Kallio got a debut at left back.
Bullard again showed his potential in this one. He ran the game with Murphy in midfield and contributed his second assist of the season with the corner that led to Hangeland’s goal. Zamora also caught the eye with an all-action performance leading the line for Hodgson’s side.
Their appeal as signings this week is severely limited by the fact that they miss the next gameweek due to the postponement of their fixture with United due to the Super Cup. After this however, the pair look to offer strong potential as could Andy Johnson once he is established within the side.
Wenger and thousands of fantasy managers will be greatly concerned by Arsenal’s form. Both Toure and Van Persie got starts at he back and up front but it is the lack of bite and creativity in midfield is hurting them badly and limiting the potential of both strikers who look short on confidence.
The temptation is certainly to bail out on their players. It should be noted however that Fabregas is muted for a return in the Champions League against FC Twente in midweek and therefore should be in line for a start against Newcastle at the Emirates next weekend. The Gunners fixtures remain kind enough to offer fantasy managers the option to persevere with their Arsenal selections but we need to see some profit from their players very soon to maintain that patience.
Liverpool 2 Middlesbrough 1
Rafa brought in Alonso for Plessis in midfield as expected while Skrtel replaced the injured Hyypia in the heart of defence. Despite Alonso’s presence in the engine room there was no denying that Liverpool struggled again and looked unlikely to earn a point here, let alone three.
Liverpool often looked vulnerable at the back and woefully short of width in midfield but were once again saved by Gerrard who dragged the three points from this game with a superb winner. Torres in contrast failed to score at Anfield for the first time in eight games but certainly looked the most likely to trouble Boro throughout.
Rafa’s side may well sit top of the table with maximum points but their 100% start to the season will be severely tested in the next few games. Villa, United and a Mersey side derby lie in wait over the next four games. Despite, doubtless Gerrard’s fantasy stock will rise on the back of his late goal in this one. It was Carragher however that walked away with the three FPL bonus points as well as a rare assist to help warrant his selection in my picks this week.
Southgate’s were terribly unlucky to come away with nothing and certainly appear to offer decent mid-price potential on their showings so far this season. The Boro boss resisted the temptation to blood new signing Hoyte at right-back and instead kept an unchanged side.
Wheater is certain to pick up more fantasy suitors after another assured display here while Downing and Alves are always likely to get some attention. Mido is now looking like another option. His second goal in two games will surely see him earn a start in the Carling Cup in midweek and could well see him start again when Boro take on Stoke next weekend.
Boro’s fixtures over the next five look pretty kind and with form looking good this appears to be a good time to consider looking their way.
Newcastle 1 Bolton 0
A predictably tight game was one by a typically opportunist effort from Owen. He came off the bench to replace Martins who had picked up an injury as Keegan went with the same side that faired so well at Old Trafford.
Owen would seem likely to earn a start when Keegan takes his side to the Emirates. He may come into consideration by fantasy managers then, as could Guiterrez who impressed once more here and picked up FPL bonus. Once the trip to Arsenal is out of the way, Newcastle’s fixtures ease considerably which should certainly raise the potential of their players throughout September.
Bolton meanwhile were unchanged and put up a strong defensive performance without offering too much up front – particularly after losing Elmander to injury. The did of course have a great opportunity to get a foothold in the game with Nolan’s penalty that was saved by Given.
The signs aren’t good for owners of Bolton’s Matt Taylor. Nolan took on spot-kicky duties in this one (but could of course lose them after seeing his kick saved) and Taylor also picked up an injury after the hour mark and was replaced. Megson has assured us that he should be okay so we’ll have to see if he makes an appearance in the Carling Cup in midweek. My bet is that Megson will go with a second string side against Northampton and so it’s likely we’ll have doubts hanging over Taylor and Elmander’s fitness going into the weekend clash with West Brom.
Injuries
Martins picked up a groin injury just before the hour-mark and was replaced by the goalscorer, Owen. Keegan will also have concerns about Duff who was replaced at half time with a knee injury.
Bolton also suffered a pair of significant injuries in this one. Big money signing Elmander suffered a hamstring injury early on and was replaced on 15 minutes and they also lost Matt Taylor to a foot injury after 65 minutes. Megson has remarked that he hoped neither would be out for a long period although there is no confirmation of a length of absence at this point.
Stoke City 3 Aston Villa 2
Stoke boss Pulis was able to give debut’s to both of his new “Fayes”. Adoulaye Faye lining up in central defence alongside Cort with Shawcross dropping out. Amdy Faye took a spot on the right of midfield with Cresswell dropping to the bench. Lawrence and Fuller also made their starts of the season with Whelan and Sidebe dropping out.
The new starters all made an impact with Lawrence and Fuller in particular catching the eye of fantasy managers. Fuller certainly looks a stronger bet than his team mate Kitson at this stage. Kitson spent a lot of this game playing the deeper role in front of Fuller who is clearly the spearhead of the side.
Lawrence meanwhile, dominated free kicks as expected and did of course stroke home the penalty to put Stoke in front. He certainly warrants his low-to-mid price across the fantasy games when fixtures look strong for Stoke. Right now however Pulis has to prepare his side to face Everton, Liverpool and Chelsea over three of the next four games. Everton should offer some joy but the Liverpool and Chelsea defences are likely to be prepared for Stokes brand of football.
O’Neil kept an unchanged side for this game. He won’t have been pleased with the performance and will hope to have both Sidwell and Cuellar available for the next encounter. The latter, in particular, looks odds on to earn a start given that Villa have conceded 5 goals in their two games. Thankfully for fantasy managers, Laursen showed his prowess at the other end in this game to warrant his popularity. Young also chipped in with another assist to demonstrate his worth even when Villa aren’t on song.
Despite the off-day for Villa, the FPL decided to distribute all the bonus points to Villa players with Carew earning the maximum backed up by Davies and Barry. Some strange decisions there.
Carew will be on many a fantasy managers radar though having notched 2 goals in 2 games. Villa’s fixtures aren’t the kindest though, with 3 away games in 5 and Liverpool and Chelsea amongst their opponents. As we saw last season though – Villa don’t fear away games and so far the side certainly looks packed with goals again.
Tottenham 1 Sunderland 2
Tottenham’s form, like their North London rivals Arsenal, is very concerning. They had plenty of possession here and created chances but confidence appears to be critically low in front of goal and with just Darren Bent to choose from – Ramos looks very short on striking options.
The Spurs boss made changes after the defeat at Boro. King replaced Dawson at the back while Bale started on the left of midfield with Lennon switched to the right. Bentley was employed in a central role just off Bent in attack.
The Berbatov situation must surely be resolved this week and Ramos will likely need to bring in a pair fo replacement strikers. Bent’s future in the Tottenham side and indeed in many fantasy sides is surely shaky then.
Bentley is another who will be giving many fantasy managers cause for concern. He did provide some spark for Spurs in this one – contributing a strong supply from set pieces. His role playing just off the front man also offers potential, although surely this will change if Ramos can bring in new faces in attack. Overall, Bentley’s potential return is reliant on Spurs finding some form and that could well be some weeks away on the evidence of this game.
Sunderland in contrast, are showing signs that they are set to improve markedly on last season’s Premiership showing and could offer fantasy managers some profit in the shape of Richardson, Reid, Cisse and budget defenders such as Collins and Nosworthy.
Keane made a number of changes to his lineup for this one, recalling skipper Whitehead to replace the injured Tainio. Chimbonda also missed out against his former club with Higginbotham returning to the defence. Cisse would see certain to earn a start in next weekend’s home game with Man City. That’s the first in a decent run of fixtures for Keane’s men which could see interest in their players pique in September.
Injuries
Sunderland’s Kieran Richardson sustained an injury and was replaced by Cisse after 65 minutes.
West Brom 1 Everton 2
The Baggies had the lions share of possession and chances but couldn’t carve out any gilt edged chances to threaten the Everton goal. Moyes’ side in contrast had just a pair of efforts on target and went away with the points.
Mowbray made a number of changes, handing a debut to Zuiverloon at right back with Hoefkens dropping to the bench. Cech also dropped to the bench with Koren returning from injury in midfield. He will be concerned about his sides lack of goal threat so far in the campaign and further new signings – particularly up front are clearly needed. Fortunately for West Brom, their fixtures over the next five games should afford them some opportunity to settle themselves but they need a result quickly.
Moyes had limited options as always but did make one change – shifting Baines to left back and brining in 16-year-old Baxter to replace Valente.
A second goal of the season for Yakubu will earn him further fantasy suitors, while Osman’s strike should also get him some attention as a mid-price midfield option. The fixtures continue to assist Everton’s players with a home game with Portsmouth followed by trips to Stoke and Hull. Those games seem likley to see Yakubu, Osman and Arteta profit further. Defensively however, Everton are yet to keep a clean sheet although Lescott’s assist and maximum FPL bonus returns will have maintained interest him after this game.
