Reports this morning suggest that Michael Essien faces six months on the sidelines as a result of the knee injury sustained whilst on international duty with Ghana. Rumour has it that he has suffered serious cruciate damage, which could threaten to end his season.

Essien was subbed after 22 minutes of the game with Libya last Friday and although the player himself was playing down the injury after the game, it’s now suggested that the injury is far worse than first anticipated. Certainly Essien’s agent, Fabien Piveteau is far from optimistic.

“Unfortunately it’s not good news. I am afraid it’s a big problem. A big problem,”

Although Essien would be a massive loss for Chelsea, one consultation for Scolari is the timely return of Mikel. He is back in full training having missed the last two games with a leg injury. He would look likely to feature at City at the weekend, although Belletti could well keep his place having impressed against Spurs.

If the Essien injury is confirmed, Scolari’s options in midfield will be limited, at least until January. With Makelele sold on, Mikel or Belletti would seemingly be assured of starts in the holding role. Scolari’s options to rest Deco or Ballack prior to Champions League games would also now appear to be restricted. Ballack’s fitness is still a concern of course with the German sitting out the last two matches with a foot injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
