Matt Etherington has emerged as a rather unlikely fantasy target in recent weeks – coinciding directly with the arrival of Zola as the new Hammers boss. Today he gave us some clues as to why he is thriving, no doubt raising his fantasy stock just that little bit more in the process.

In the last two matches, the West Ham midfielder has been handed licence to push forward from a left wing role to add further support to the front two. It’s paid off with two goals and an assist and Etherington is clearly loving it…

“It is really suiting me,” remarked Etherington on the official site. “I am getting more involved in the game, I am not stuck out on the wing relying on the others in getting me the ball, and it is giving me a bit of freedom. Everyone is enjoying it.”

Etherington is currently a low-mid price midfield option across the various games – ideal material to help fund a move for a certain Mr Ronaldo. He is currently holding at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League but that is set to rise after today with thousands of managers jumping on board.

In the Guardian game meanwhile, he is holding at 5.70 but having more than doubled his points return in the last two appearances – it’s only matter of time before his value starts to reflect increased interest in this game.

West Ham host Bolton this weekend, followed by a trip to Hull after the international break. After that things get a little tricky for Etherington and West Ham with a double-header against Arsenal and United. However, with his price likely to rise further if he maintains his form against Bolton and Hull, it looks wise to invest regardless of that harsh pair of fixtures.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
