United have lost Paul Scholes for around two months after he suffered knee ligament damage in tonight’s Champions League tie in Denmark.
Scholes twisted the knee in a challenge and was stretchered off on 16 minutes. Although Ferguson was initiallly optimistic about the injury, the extent of the injury was later confirmed by United with a two month layoff he likely prognosis.
So what does this mean for the United midfield?
With Hargreaves still troubled by a knee injury and Carrick also struggling for fitness, in the short-term, United actually look a bit thing in the centre of the pitch. Anderson is the ready-made replacement for Scholes but hasn’t exactly sparkled so far this season. He is certainly the favourite to come in on a regular basis however, and it’s likely that we’ll see him, and maybe Fletcher in the centre of midfield at Blackburn. The Scot is another who could have his rate of rotation reduced as a result of this injury – a factor which could see some renewed fantasy interest in him after his strong start to the season.
Giggs is another intriguing option. Ferguson remarked only last week that he saw Giggs in a central role – albeit further forward. He replaced Scholes tonight and duly provided the assist for the opening goal. It could be that he benefits from a run of starts as a result of Scholes’ absence.
