So West Ham have completed the permanent signing of Diego Tristan. The 32-year-old Spanish striker has signed for an undisclosed period of time after spending the past month or so on trial with Zola’s squad.
Potentially, this could spell trouble for owners of Carlton Cole. At 6’1 Tristan is not going to be parked out wide right or left in Zola’s 4-3-3. He’s surely going to be thrown straight down the middle. That will put Cole under immediate threat of rotation, which won’t please the thousands of fantasy managers who have recently lept on his budget potential after a rather decent start to the season.
There’s talk of a Tristan debut at Hull and with Cole nursing an ankle injury for the past two games, that might not be as far-fetched as it sounds.
Tristan was once considered one of the hottest striking properties in Europe, after scoring 78 goals in 177 appearance for Deportivo from 2000 to 2006. Those days are long gone of course, and the Spaniard will doubtless find it difficult to adjust quickly to the pace of the Premiership.
He’s not got the best reputation as a trainer and previous clubs have questioned his commitment off the field. At his last club he managed just a single goal in 21 games and that was in Serie B. He clearly threatens to make a dent in Cole’s minutes on the pitch but I’m not expecting too much else. Then again, I didn’t expect much from Di Michele and he went and caught fire on his full debut.
