Cesc Fabregas has added his name to the big injury worry list for the weekend after suffering a suspected broken nose in last night’s international for Spain.

The Arsenal man finished the 2-1 win over Belgium but Spanish medical staff were worried about his condition after the game and he will now report back to the Emirates to have the injury assessed. It’s hoped that he’ll be able to play against Everton, although he will be a major concern for Wenger and his remaining fantasy owners.

While we’re on the subject of Fabregas and Arsenal, the Sky article also includes some interesting insight from the midfielder on his role and the Arsenal team in general…

Most notably, he talks about last season’s midfield that included the likes of Rosicky, Hleb and Flamini and appears to lament their loss this term.

“Now none of those players are in the side and I feel like a rare being. We are more defensive-minded and sturdy as a team but we don’t play so much skilful stuff.”

That’s a quote that appears to shed some light on the approach that Fabregas has adopted so far this season, an approach that appears to be influenced by his newfound seniority in the side and he clearly sees this as an issue…

“It’s hard to imagine a midfield where I am the oldest member…. We find it very hard to win matches, as we do not possess enough experience”.

Fabregas may feel, quite rightly, that Song and/or Denilson just don’t provide the kind of defensive support he enjoyed from Flamini last season and if so, that does appear to have influenced his own role. He seems to have curtailed some of his attacking instincts in order to allow the likes of Walcott, Nasri and Denilson, the option to join the attack. It’s all purely speculation of course but my impression of Fabregas this term, is very different to the cavalier, attacking player we saw previously.

That rare headed goal at Sunderland certainly improves his fantasy stats but that can’t hide the fact that he has dropped deeper to set up initial plays far more often than last season, a role which Hleb and Flamini appeared to fulfill on plenty of occasions. You have to wonder whether Fabregas will get anywhere near his impressive points tally of last season if that continues.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
