No two ways about it – we were spoilt in midweek. Ronaldo, Lampard, Gerrard, Young, Adeabyor all came good. There were clean sheets for United, Liverpool and Chelsea. It was err… fantasy fantasy football.

Are we going to get a kick in the balls this weekend to keep us on our toes?

More than likely. Here’s the my picks and the feeble logic to with them…

Okay lets start in goal as per usual and I’ve opted for a safe option in the form of Liverpool’s Reina. The Liverpool defence is sure to be tested at the Lane and Reina may well bring in some save points as a result. Just two goals conceded on their travels though, points to another strong chance of a Liverpool clean sheet.

First up in defence, I’ve gone for Chelsea’s John Terry. Why not Bosingwa? Simply because Sunderland are weak at set plays and I can see Terry posing a major threat. With no Carvalho alongside him, he may also have to get through a little more work and might catch the eye of the FPL bonus judges – whoever they may be.

Vidic keeps his place alongside him – Ferdinand and Evra are worthy alternatives of course, but I’ll stick with the big Serb in a home game with Hull that looks a fairly strong bet for a clean sheet. Certainly in the top five this week anyway.

Traore comes back into the picks with an attractive home game with Wigan. He’s developed a lovely habit of being withdrawn just before Portsmouth concede goals – we might need that again with Zaki around but even without a clean sheet, Traore poses a threat going forward in that left midfield role.

I’ve gone for Wheater to finish off the back four. Boro claimed a rare clean sheet on Wednesday and with West Ham without Carlton Cole, Southgate will fancy his sides chances of another shut-out this weekend. Wheater is due a goal too.

Moving to the midfield; Ronaldo continues to be ever-present in the picks since his return. I can’t see him being rested against Hull – more likely he’ll sit out the Champions League game with Celtic in midweek. Ronaldo has spoke out today about how he needs games to sharpen his fitness and has backed himself to match last season’s goal tally. All that points to another start, more points and some disappointed Ronaldo doubters.

Like Ronaldo, Lampard picks himself. He remains essential as a fantasy foil alongside the United man as he keeps ticking over with goals, assists and FPL bonus. More of the same looks on the cards as Sunderland come to town. Look for Lampard’s assists from set plays in particular.

I’ve kept faith with Ashley Young, although I was contemplating switching to an in-form Barry. O’Neill has threatened rotation with a busy schedule ahead but I don’t think he can go into Monday’s game without Young’s supply from set-pieces. He’s due a goal too.

I’ve gambled with the final option. I see Wenger shuffling things about at Stoke this weekend after the midweek drama with Spurs and the Champions League to come. I think he’ll hand a start to Diaby in a wide role this weekend to add some extra height and muscle to his midfield. He could be worth a flutter then and as I’m keeping predictable elsewhere in the midfield, I thought I’d go with his hunch.

Up front I’ve gone with a pair who look certain starters and who face good opposition at home. Defoe against Wigan and Alves against West Ham. Both are on spot kicks and both are playing in sides who are expected to score at least a couple given the defences they face.

I was tempted by Yakubu as an alternative. He got a hat-trick against Fulham last season but I can see the Goodison encounter being a tight one, despite improvement from Everton of late.

Want some alternatives elsewhere? Okay lets go crazy with Carson of West Brom and Robinson of Blackburn in goal. Newcastle’s Ameobi up front. Blackburn’s Villanueva in midfield and a slight inkling that I could be completely wrong about Everton, with Jagielka, Arteta and Pienaar all worth a look. Finally, Delap will be launching his missiles at a petrified Almunia and Fuller could well profit again.

In the Guardian game – the Hull and Sunderland defences and midfield will get through a lot of work at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge. Ashbee is suspended but Alonso continues to offer great value as a cheaper alternative to the rotated Denilson in the defensive midfield position.

Finally the FPL captain question. Yet again (I’m guessing this will be a familiar theme each week) it comes down to whether a) you have Ronaldo b) you think he will play. If the answer to both of those is yes then you would be a brave fantasy managers to look elsewhere.

Lampard (yawn) is your plan B as always and a bloody good one at that. If you don’t have either of those, frankly I’m shocked, and it probably means you’ll need to look at Adebayor at Stoke. For the real gamblers how about Traore? Crazy talk I know but your the one without Ronaldo and Lampard.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
