Another Saturday morning wander along the edge of the FPL deadline cliff, discussing such highbrow topics as Ronaldo vs Lampard, the mind of Tony Adams…oh and Hitler makes a rare appearance…
Let’s start with the issue of the FPL captain – something which has looked more and more cut and dry with every new injury that fall’s out of the Emirates. In some camps however, there were some concerns that Ronaldo often fails to produce in the big games. The stats don’t appear to reinforce this view.
Last season Ronaldo scored in both home and away encounters with Arsenal. He also scored in the home game with Liverpool and of course the Champions League final with Chelsea. While tougher opposition will obviously make Ronaldo’s task that little bit harder, today he will face an Arsenal side who could go into the game with an array of unfit players – including the likes of Gallas, Silvestre and Sagna at the back. United will never have a better opportunity to record their first win at the Emirates.
Chelsea and Lampard offer the alternative with their trip to Blackburn. Lampard has found joy against Rovers in previous seasons – scoring three goals against them in four meetings in 2006-07. The Blues record at Ewood has been strong – with three wins over the past four seasons – each with a clean sheet. There’s clear potential for Lampard then – but Ronaldo still looks to have a little more in his favour.
There are some interesting points to look for in this week’s team selections and I’ll be keeping a particular close eye on what Hughes does with Garrido and how Adams accommodates the expected return of Kranjcar.
Garrido came back into the side on Thursday but he is far from assured his starts in a City defence that has consistently conceded goals of late. The Spanish left back looked a decent proposition whilst City were keeping clean sheets but his stock has fallen dramatically of late. I’m interested to see if Hughes starts with him again with Spurs in town.
As for Adams – he’s got to decide how he will fit Kranjcar into his lineup and that could have a massive effect on the value presented by Traore. He has been playing left midfield all season but has been subbed in the last three, with Kranjcar replacing him in the last two. There is a chance that Adams could shift Traore to left back and drop Belhadj – that would impact Traore’s returns to clean sheets. Alternatively, he could bring Kranjcar into an alternative role on the right of midfield or even behind the striker. It’s certainly something he has been considering according to this article.
Looking at my own lineups and in the FPL I’ve been lucky enough to have few selection headaches this week. I’ve used my transfer to double up on the Liverpool defence, with Carragher and Agger at the back and, with Alonso already in midfield (a risk if Torres returns today as expected), I’m banking on strong Liverpool results both today against West Brom, and in the coming weeks.
My only real decision in the FPL came up front where I have to decide whether to give Zamora another go or back the Hull defence and throw Zayatte in. I’m leaning towards Zamora having heard that Hull have conceded more corners than any other side in the Premiership – we all know how vital set plays are to Megson’s side so perhaps they will come away from the trip to Hull with a goal or two. I have Bendtner on the bench and while my heart wants me to throw him in against United in the must-win game at the Emirates – my head says that’s an idea to chuck out without too much thought.
In the Guardian game, again my only dilemma came up front where I had an embarrassment of riches to choose from – I’ve backed Robinho in my 5-1-3-1 formation though – I’m hoping for a goal glut against Redknapp’s Spurs this weekend with both the Brazilian and Wright-Phillips bringing some decent returns.
Looking over the late team news and there’s little to concern us – there’s still no mention of Agger’s finger in the Liverpool bulletins, which are understandably dominated by the return of Torres. We can only presume that Agger will take his place in the side against West Brom then, with Hyypia saved for the Carling Cup tie in the week.
Drogba is expected to oust Anelka up front as Chelsea travel to Blackburn. Joe Cole could get a rest after missing training on Friday, so Scolari may shuffle things with Kalou or Belletti perhaps coming into the side. Mineiro could also get a full debut should Scolari look to drop Mikel in the holding role.
Nothing major elsewhere – Steve Bruce is contemplating bringing in some extra height to tackle the Delap throw. Scharner could replace Koumas apparently, while his instructions to his team to tackle the Delap delivery is “just head it”. That might work you know. Meanwhile, Milner is fit for Villa but Petrov misses out again. No biggie there, I’m more concerned that Ashley Young gets his finger out and delivers that points to go with his fat new contract.
I’ll leave you with a couple of links to amuse yourself with while you wait for the tedious FPL update after 11.30. Some of you may have already come across this excellent YouTube movie that was posted in the Picks thread yesterday. It takes that now-notorious scene from Downfall and applies it to the kind of FPL agony that only we can truly understand. V Funny.
The second link I’d like to offer up takes you to the very excellent The Right Result website which has been something I’ve been meaning to plug for a few weeks. A genius idea, this offers a verdict on all the dodgy refereeing decisions and calculates the true Premiership table should the “right results” have stood. Lovely stuff and essential reading unless you happen to be Stuart Attwell.
Good luck for another weekend everyone. It’s bacon sarnie time for me.
