Friday’s weekly selection of recommended players for the weekend games is live an kicking.

As always check out the midweek meander for my earlier thoughts on this week’s fixtures – that may well help make more sense of the selection. If not, dive right in and read on as I controversially turn my back on Jonathan Greening…

Starting in goal, and while I’m not confident on a Liverpool clean sheet at Anfield against Hull (Brown’s side have scored in all their away games so far), I’m at least guaranteed some save points from Reina if he does lose his shut-out.

I’ve taken some risks in front of him, although I’m starting with Bosingwa who is just about essential and almost guaranteed a clean sheet at home to West Ham given their current scoring form (3 goals in 9 games). Alongside the Chelsea man I’ve put faith in a Stoke clean sheet at home to Fulham and drafted in Sonko. He’s not an automatic choice for Pulis’ side but I believe he’ll start and should Delap drop out or be subbed, he’ll be on long throw duty, so there are potential assists here.

The same could be said for my final two picks in defence: Portsmouth’s Glenn Johnson and Wigan’s Ryan Taylor. The Pompey full-back should be featured once again bombing forward in a game that looks full of goals. Belhadj is a cheaper option and should start in midfield, but I’m not convinced he’ll get the whole game given Adams’ habit of subbing him early in the second half or even at half time.

Ryan Taylor meanwhile has just won his place back in the Wigan lineup and should be kept in on the left of midfield. His set-pieces will be a major threat to Blackburn’s goal and there’s a decent chance of a clean sheet here too.

The midfield has Lampard and Ronaldo of course – I’m sticking with them because their aren’t any individuals with the scoring power that they have that have put themselves forward at this stage in the season. Gerrard was a consideration, although I’ve opted for Kuyt instead. He is likely to be played up front with the Liverpool skipper just behind him. I see Liverpool needing a couple of goals in this one and Kuyt could well feature in the points.

Wright-Phillips gets the final spot in midfield – a slight gamble given his run of form. There could well be goals in the clash with Everton and if Robinho fails to make it then Wright-Phillips will be played up just behind the striker with Ireland likely to be shifted out left. That could see the former Chelsea winger return to fantasy form at last.

Villa’s Young and Portsmouth’s Kranjcar were considerations but with Villa failing to score in half their home games, I’m nervous that Bolton will stiffle them given their away form. As for Kranjcar, I’ve opted to fill my second Portsmouth slot with a team-mate.

Indeed, up front the Pompey double act of Crouch and Defoe look very strong indeed against Newcastle. Crouch is the man in form but Defoe is on penalties and I just fancy him to hit a brace in this one in his battle with Owen at the other end.

I’ve backed Arsenal and Adebayor for the final spot with the inconsistent Gunners up against a Boro side suffering from a string of injuries at the back. Van Persie and Adebayor could make them suffer – and although I’m uncomfortable backing any player involved in a Boro game, I’ve decided to stick with it. I can see the Gunners getting a couple here and Adebayor should earn an assist at least.

There are plenty of alternatives around. in defence, Sunderland look a good budget choice for clean sheet hunters with Ferdinand perhaps their best option. I’m not too confident in a United clean sheet at the Lane but O’Shea certainly offers a strong option should you fancy them. Much depends on the fitness of Rio Ferdinand which is in doubt with further back problems – if he starts then a United cleanie looks a lot more likely.

In midfield, I’ve a feeling that Everton will get at least one, with Cahill likely to be the main threat. Up front meanwhile, I’ve backed Fuller against the Fulham defence. I think this game will be tight but Fuller could be the difference between the sides.

Zaki is the other obvious pick in attack, although I’m still not convinced on his fitness or Wigan’s goalscoring form at the JJB. Even with Zaki fit – they really struggled for goals at home and despite Blackburn’s generosity at the back, I’m still not expecting a thrashing for Rovers. Benjani presents a third attractive option with a decent amount of goals on the cards at Eastlands.

I’ve got hunches and inklings I’ve successfully kept at bay – in particular for some reason I see Santa Cruz causing problems for a Wigan side without Boyce in their defence at the JJB. With Taylor in my defence though, I decided to leave this one alone.

As for the FPL captain question – just like last week, I’ll sleep on that on and save my thoughts for the pre-match preamble in the morning. It’s not so cut-and-dry that’s for sure with fitness doubts, lack of form and decent opposition all piled up against Ronaldo. More on that tomorrow though.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
