United’s progress to the Carling Cup final has created further fixture pileup and reasons to moan for Ferguson. It’s also given us fantasy managers some new issues to ponder.
Here’s a catch-up of the latest known and known unknowns with the fixtures…
The Carling Cup Final will take place on Sunday March 1st. This means that United’s home game with Portsmouth scheduled for February 28 is now postponed and will be arranged for a later date. This will be another double gameweek for United then, and a second for Portsmouth who have yet to reschedule their postponed home fixture with Man City.
United seem likely to face Spurs in the final with Redknapp’s side leading 4-1 after the first leg. If that is the case then Tottenham’s visit to Sunderland scheduled for March 1, will also be postponed with double gameweeks on the horizon for both clubs.
At first glance this is bad news for owners of United players. However, they already have a double fixture coming up in gameweek 25 in which they face West Ham at Upton Park on February 8, followed by a home game with Fulham on February 17. United still have 5 games over the next 5 gameweeks then, with another double gameweek to come when the Portsmouth game is rescheduled.
This does impact on the short-term appeal of United players over the coming month though. For example, while Berbatov perhaps had the edge on Robinho and Van Persie with his extra fixture over the next 5 gameweeks – this is now no longer the case.
For details of how the current double gameweek situation looks (it’s getting complicated) – take a glance at the season ticker which has now been updated with the latest “knowns”. Expect further revisions should Spurs make the Carling final tonight and once there are dates for the rescheduled matches of course.
