It’s early days but last night’s round of internationals don’t appear to have dealt us any major new injury concerns. However, the lineups did provide a helpful guide to the likely fitness of a few of the weekend’s casualties….
Perhaps most significantly, Everton’s Tim Cahill failed to make the starting eleven for Australia but was an unused sub. I’m sure Moyes will be delighted that Cahill travelled, carrying an injury, only to sit on the bench. On the bright side, barring major jet-lag, Cahill should come into consideration for the home game with Wigan this weekend. Everton will check on his fitness following the recent calf injury sustained against Stoke, but it seems likely that he’ll figure.
Arsenal’s Bendtner was another who went into the midweek internationals carrying an injury. He picked up a knee problem in the win over Malta on Saturday. He did however, make the bench last night and saw action early on as a first-half sub. Barring any aggravation of the weekend knock, he’s likely to be available for Wenger against City then. As I’ve mentioned numerous times before however, Wenger’s options up front are plentiful.
Eduardo promoted himself in Wenger’s thoughts with a goal in Croatia’s 2-0 win over Andorra. He completed the 90 minutes, along with Kranjcar and Corluka. Tottenham’s Modric was surprisingly left on the bench.
Wenger also has Van Persie as an option of course, although he missed out for Holland against Macedonia with the calf injury sustained against Scotland. He’ll go into the weekend a doubt then and to my mind, unlikely to start with Tuesday’s Villarreal tie looming on Tuesday. Incidentally, Dirk Kuyt warmed up for Liverpool’s trip to Fulham with a brace in the 4-0 win for Holland.
Going back to Arsenal, Arshavin completed the 90 minutes for Russia in their 1-0 win over Liechtenstein. He looks almost certain to start for the Gunners given his ineligibility for the Champions League.
As for City – there could be changes afoot. Everyone’s favourite whinger – Craig Bellamy, missed Wales’ latest defeat with a knee injury so he remains a doubt for the Emirates trip. Robinho was also in action in Brazil’s 3-0 win over Peru. He was eventually replaced on 70 minutes, while team-mate Elano was replaced 7 minutes later. Both Brazilians will now return to City later today and according to reports, Hughes could cite jet-lag as a possible excuse to rest the listless Robinho for the weekend.
Liverpool’s Benayoun was only fit enough for a place on the bench for Israel. He was a half-time sub but couldn’t prevent Greece running out 2-1 winners. Rafa will obviously consider Benayoun for the trip to Fulham but my bet is he’ll find himself benched at best.
Finally – more jet-lag warnings – Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards both started for Trinidad and Tobago in their 3-0 defeat to the US. Both could be doubts for the Upton Park trip given that they aren’t due to return until Friday.
So far then, no major new concerns. Ferdinand was apparently feeling his back and was subbed late on for England, however, he looks certain to start for United given that Vidic is suspended for the Villa game.
