We returned to domestic action with one of the most eventful weekends of Premier League football in living memory. It was also a heavy scoring fantasy gameweek for most of us – champagne stuff all round, that left us all with a pleasurable Monday morning hangover.

While our heads clear, here’s some notes on the weekend lineups, with some latest news on this week’s injuries and bans and some early thoughts on next weekend’s teamsheets…

Blackburn 2 Tottenham 1

Allardyce made just one change to his eleven, dropping Ooijer to the bench and starting with Andrews at right-back. Spurs turned up with an unchanged side, the first time that Redknapp has kept the same starting lineup in his term in charge. That meant starts for Bent and King who were injury doubts going into the game.

Blackburn’s lineup is due a shuffle in the weeks to come with Santa Cruz sure to push for a recall on his return to fitness. That could still be several weeks away. Dunn was fit enough for the bench here and could push for a start next time out. Pedersen and Roberts will be injury doubts for next weekend having picked up injuries here (see below). Rovers are starting to look stretched then and it’s a trip to Anfield next. Continued fantasy investment in Liverpool looks likely and recommended then.

As for Spurs, they have a settled lineup which shouldn’t change too much barring injury. Pavlyuchenko and Bentley look frozen out on the bench with Bent installed up front and Lennon wide right. I can’t see that changing for the next two home games (WHM NEW) for which interest in Keane, Modric and Lennon will surely increase. There may even be some investment in the Spurs back four, despite a shoddy showing in this one.

Injuries and Bans
Gamst-Pedersen sustained a calf injury in the first-half. He was replaced on 26 minutes. Jason Roberts was replaced at half-time with a foot injury. Both players are due to have scans this week to assess the damage and both are doubts for the trip to Anfield at the weekend.

Tottenham’s Palacios saw red mid-way through the second-half for two bookings. He will now face an immediate suspension and will miss the home game against Newcastle next weekend.

West Ham 2 Sunderland 0

Zola had plenty of injuries to contend with – Parker and Kovac the latest casualties dropping out late this week. That meant a start for Stanislas in midfield, with Spector shifting to a central midfield role alongside Noble. Collins was kept on the bench despite a return to fitness, so Tompkins kept a starting role alongside Upson who was recalled after injury. Tristan and Di Michele lead the line in Cole’s absence. Savio only made the bench.

Sbragia rested both Jones and Edwards after their international duty in the US. Cisse started up front in a 4-5-1 then. McCartney missed out through injury, so Collins shifted to left-back, which meant a recall for Ben Haim. Nosworthy returned to fitness and was on the bench. Richardson came back from suspension to replace Edwards. Gordon earned a recall in goal with Fulop benched.

The West Ham lineup was depleted here and Zola has hinted today that he will hope to have numbers back for the trip to Spurs next weekend. Certainly Kovac and Parker look set to be in contention. In fantasy terms, Tompkins has become a strong budget option. He kept Collins on the bench here and that should also be the case for the White Hart Lane trip.

Sunderland will surely recall Jones and possibly Edwards for the clash with United. They need results and although it’s hard to see them getting much from United, hopefully Sbragia will go for win and restore a 4-4-2 for that one.

Injuries and Bans
Spector picked up a bang to his head late on and was replaced on 79 minutes. Reports today confirm that he is okay and should figure next weekend.

Arsenal 2 Man City 0

Wenger welcomed back both Fabregas and Adebayor who both started here. The Gunners were without Diaby and Van Persie through injury, while Nasri missed out with flu. That saw Wenger adopt a fluid 4-5-1 formation with Fabregas pitched further forward in front of Song and Denilson. Arshavin and Walcott took the wide berths.

Hughes was without Ireland through injury but could weclome back Bellamy to lead his attack. Bridge also shook off a knock to retain the left-back role. Zabaleta kept a starting berth in midfield – Robinho and Wright-Phillips started on the wings. Benjani and Sturridge made returns to the bench, while Bojinov recovered from a knock to sit next to them.

The Arsenal lineup remains unpredictable in the coming weeks as they embark on their two leg Champions League tie. Wenger hopes to have Nasri, Van Persie and Walcott (who took a knock here) available for Tuesday’s Champions League game. All three will have fitness tests according to the club today. Eduardo and Diaby will miss that one and remain doubts for the weekend trip to Wigan. The return of Fabregas and Adebayor, not only to the lineup but also to the fantasy scoring, will put them back on our radars. I’ll cover that particular topic in a later article.

City’s lineup is also subject to change given that Ireland will hopefully make a return at home to Fulham next weekend. City are in UEFA Cup action on Thursday and Ireland remains a doubt for that one according to reports today. If Ireland returns then Hughes will then have options which could threaten Zabaleta’s midfield role. However, with Bridge and Kompany struggling with hamstrings, Zabaleta could well keep his place this weekend. The report from City today suggest that Martin Petrov is set to make a return to reserve team action this week and could be in the frame for the UEFA tie and therefore next weekend’s league game.

Injuries and Bans
Walcott sustained a knee injury late on but this didn’t look a serious knock and Wenger expects him to be available for Tuesday’s Champions League tie.

City lost Bridge to a hamstring injury after just 17 minutes, while Kompany also sustained a hamstring problem and was subbed on 30 minutes. Both look doubts for Thursday’s European game and will also remain doubtful for City’s home game with Fulham.

Bolton 4 Middlesbrough 1

Megson made just one change with Shittu starting in his defence and Puygrenier dropping to the bench. Andy O’Brien – was also kept on the bench. Boro made a string of changes, switching the formation to 4-4-2 after employing 5-3-2 at Stoke last time out. Bates returned from his one match ban, Hoyte starting at right-back for McMahon, Aliadiere came in for Taylor with Pogatetz shifting to left-back, while Alves replaced the benched King.

I’m not expecting wholesale changes in either lineup going forward, although Boro have now lost O’Neill for two games after he picked up a tenth booking of the season here. That will likely see Shawky push for a start again in central midfield. Up front, Alves appears to have been identified as the man to score the goals to keep Boro up. That looks increasingly unlikely to be honest.

As for Bolton, Megson’s small squad has resulted in a settled lineup. Davies and Taylor continued to thrive – while Gardner justified his placing in my picks this week with a goal and an assist.

Injuries and Bans
Boro lost their skipper Pogatetz to a knee injury after 35 minutes. He is having scans today according to reports and Boro are preparing themselves for the worst.

West Brom 0 Stoke City 2

Mowbray brought Valero back into his midfield, dropping Koren to the bench in the only change to the West Brom lineup. Pulis restored Etherington to his eleven to replace the injured Diao, with Lawrence employed on the right and Delap taking a central midfield role.

Mowbray continues to tinker with his lineup but can’t find any combination of midfield and attack that can make an impression. At the back meanwhile, they continue to make mistakes. Martis’ error for the first goal seems set to lose him his starting role with Meite now fit once again.

As for Stoke, Pulis went with two wingers and got the win – they could map out the way forward for Stoke who have the fixtures and the form to pull clear. Beattie and, to a lesser extent, Fuller, remain key fantasy targets. The defence and Shawcross in particular, also continue to offer strong value.

Hull 0 Portsmouth 0

Phil Brown was without Cousin up front, so Manucho lead the line with Fagan in support. Dawson, Zayatte and Ashbee all returned from injury and were restored to the starting lineup. Barmby also came back into the side in an attacking lineup. Kilbane and Marney dropped to the bench. Paul Hart made just one change – Hughes replacing knee injuring victim Davis in midfield. Pennant was fit enough to claim a place on the bench.

The Hull lineup is in constant flux right now and is certainly hard to predict. Geovanni seems reinstalled in midfield, while Barmby is being used sparingly. Seemingly Mendy has nailed down a starting role on the right of midfield and presents the best value for fantasy managers given his classification as a defender. For all their early season attacking vigour, Brown has now got his scrapping for every point and any value in fantasy terms, could well come from Turner or Mendy.

Portsmouth will be forced into a change for the West Brom game next weekend with Johnson picking up a red card in this one. He will serve a one-match ban, allowing Pennant to be restored in midfield and Kaboul to keep his place at right-back. Sean Davis remains a doubt for the weekend having had stitches in a knee injury sustained in training but Hart seems hopeful that he’ll make it.

Injuries and Bans
Glenn Johnson saw red for two bookings and he will now face an immediate suspension and miss the game against West Brom at Fratton Park next weekend. Bizarrely that protects him from a further suspension since he moved on to 9 bookings after this match. However, as he misses the West Brom game, he will pass by the 10 booking curfew with is April 12.

Newcastle 0 Chelsea 2

Shearer was able to welcome back Nolan from a three match suspension in his midfield – he replaced Smith in the starting eleven. Beye also made a start having returned to the bench last time out. He came in for the injured Bassong, with Ryan Taylor replacing Steven Taylor at right-back. Duff and Guthrie returned from injury to take places on the bench.

Hiddink opted for Ivanovic at right-back to replace hamstring victim Bosingwa. Anelka returned from injury to replace Drogba who had injured an ankle in training. Belletti dropped to the bench which meant a start for Kalou, while Mikel replaced Ballack who was also benched.

Going forward I expect a settled lineup from Shearer although there will be likely changes at the back. Bassong looks likely to return to the fray for the crucial clash with Stoke according to reports today. Steven Taylor could also return but he is “further away” according to Shearer.

The Chelsea lineup for the home game with Bolton will be decided by the fitness of Drogba. Hiddink hopes to have him back for the Champions League clash with Liverpool on Wednesday. Hiddink could well rest players for the Bolton game if the tie with Liverpool remains in the balance or goes against them.

Injuries and Bans
Lovenkrands sustained a back injury just before half-time and was taken to hospital as a result. It seems unlikely they he will figure in Shearer’s plans for the weekend.

Fulham 0 Liverpool 1

Hodgson named his usual unchanged lineup with Kamara again kept on the bench. Rafa, in contrast, tinkered a little with his eleven with Aurellio left out of the 18 with the Champions League tie with Chelsea in mind. Insua took the left-back role, with Dossena playing just in front of him for Riera who dropped out. Mascherano was rested after his international exploits, allowing Lucas to start alongside Alonso in midfield.

Liverpool have the Chelsea clash on Wednesday and their lineup for the Blackburn game this coming weekend will be much determined by how this goes. The temptation to rest players against Rovers will be great and that has to be a worry for fantasy managers. The availability of Agger, Insua, Dossena, Lucas, Babel, Benayoun and Ngog as options, certainly gives Benitez enough to play with, while Rovers don’t appear to have the away form to concern Rafa.

Everton 4 Wigan 0

Moyes was able to welcome back Hibbert to his defence which meant that Jacobsen’s stay in the starting lineup was short-lived. Cahill also returned having missed the Portsmouth game – Saha dropped out. Bruce could bring Valencia back into his side after he recovered from a hamstring injury. N’Zogbia also shook off a knock to claim a starting role on the left. Wigan went with a 4-5-1 – Scharner pushing up to support Mido up front with Rodallega benched.

The Everton lineup remains settled and solid which should see continued fantasy investment in the back four and in attacking players such as Jo and Cahill. I’ll cover the options here in another article I have planned but in the short-term we need to look at Everton’s fixtures and be wary of a tough double header away at Villa and Chelsea to come next.

Steve Bruce will have been alarmed at conceding four goals with a 4-5-1 formation in place and will surely revert to 4-4-2 for the visit of Arsenal next time out. That will force him to choose from Brown, Scharner and Watson for the two starting roles in midfield.

Injuries and Bans
Wigan lost Brown to a knock – he was replaced at half-time.

Man United 3 Aston Villa 2

Ferguson was without a string of players through injury and suspension – the latest being Ferdinand who missed out with a groin injury. Neville came back into the defence then, while O’Shea kept his starting role. Fletcther sat alongside Carrick in midfield, while Nani and Giggs took up the wide roles. Ronaldo was pushed forward in support of Tevez up front with Rooney banned and Berbatov injured.

O’Neill brought Shorey in at left-back, dropping Reo-Coker to the bench. Heskey was sidelined with a hamstring so Agbonlahor came back in to partner Carew up front.

United will welcome back their suspended trio of Vidic, Rooney and Scholes for the trip to Sunderland and Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Porto. Ferdinand is unlikely to return for that European game according to Ferguson. He is set to go into the weekend an injury doubt which could mean another start for Evans.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
