Arsene Wenger has dropped a huge hint that Cesc Fabregas will revert to a deeper, defensive role for Arsenal’s remaining games.

The Spaniard has been employed just off the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 in previous games and has earned 4 assists in his two league appearances so far. That kind of return has prompted a great deal of interest from fantasy managers.

However, Fabregas’ role was always likely to change once that Wenger was afforded more options up front. With Van Persie, Eduardo, Bendtner, Adebayor and Arshavin all soon to be available, Wenger has suggested that Fabregas will be a withdrawn to a deeper midfield role…

The Arsenal boss switched Fabregas to a deeper role in the second half of the 4-1 win at Wigan, with Walcott pushed up closer to the striker. According to Wenger, this was partly because his side were lacking creativity and also because Fabregas was being man marked.

The Spaniard easily adjusted to the role, a positon which he had been occupying up until his injury in December. Now Wenger has hinted that that he will keep Fabregas withdrawn …

“I would still say the deeper role suits him more because he likes to get the ball from the centre back and he has a good long pass. That’s more him than a guy who plays behind the strikers who might have more pace to penetrate”.

Although Fabregas can contribute from this deeper role, we’ve seen from earlier in the season, that this position finds him prompting the play, rather than providing the killer ball for the assist from the edge of the box. This lead to the former fantasy favourite contributing just 1 goal and 4 assists in 15 starts.

Given these latest quotes from Wenger and Fabregas’ early season returns, fantasy managers should certainly be wary of investing in the Arsenal man at this moment in time.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
