The results are in, the ties have been decided, and we now have a full published list of round 1 results for The Fantasy Football Scout Cup, sponsored by Paddy Power. You no doubt know how your tie ended up, but if you click here you can access the full results. This article picks out some key results, announces the first prize winner, and includes details of when the second round draw will be made…
I’m going to have to start with team ‘Scout Contributors’, because we took an absolute battering. Mark may regret saying on the latest podcast “it would be embarrassing to go out first round” as he slipped 56-52 to Canucklehead. The podcast’s co-presenter Granville faired no better, on the wrong end of a 64-52 drubbing to Lady M. Even though Andy and I’m Not Marshal Foch were joint 22nd top scorers for the week (with 64), their opponents were top 10, meaning they failed to progress. Their fixtures against Comfy_Coxy (68) and ToonTom (67) were the highest aggregate point scoring fixtures in the round. SIR PAULOS and SUPERIOR BEING also all fell by the wayside with defeats to Barkerov and Jonessi respectively, leaving just greek fan and I to fly the flag.
The top score for the week goes to howcro, who annihilated JN 80-50. That earns him a tidy £25 bet courtesy of sponsors Paddy Power. That wasn’t the biggest winning margin however, that came in the tie that saw Aris beat Wassup/NeverToSeeIt…/[insert latest pseudonym] 42-2. Wassup took a impressive 56 point hit before his tie, and promptly blamed the girlfriend.
An unfortunate 8 fantasy mangers lost their tie based on overall rankings, after matching their opponents gameweek tally. The unlucky losers were TheLordGodAlmighty, simaxjoy, mariners, Johnnycage, Yankee, MrSty, the_dazzler and skinnyfish. (The winners in those ties are denoted by an asterisk next to their score on the results page.)
Proving that the luck of the draw can be as important as a good score is Hardy32, who edged through with the lowest score for a victory in the entire round. 37 was enough to see off Isnogood‘s 31. No such luck for Cornelius however, whose hopes for a fairy-tale cup run were ended abruptly, losing 60-54 to ronanfromcork.
As pointed out in a previous article, there were plenty of heavyweight bouts pitting two regular posters together. Pocky narrowly beat Jms 57-54, Seal squeezed past smuggs by one point and Super Jon progresses after beating Sasquatch 46-44. Elsewhere, despite maintaining hi 100% record in FFS H2H1, BP FC lost 64-56 to denial, Jimi beat Pierre Luigi Collina 60-58 and Yidfan convincingly eliminated dribbler 68-56.
Plenty of big names fell in the first round with puffinboy, Tommy J (after a little confusion… sorry Tommy J), Seanigula, Chris de Borg, Marknlard, CK, Dick Fran Dyke and Skilla just some of the names falling at the first hurdle.
So, we’re down to 256, and with plenty of the big boys out of the cup, progression surely seems a little bit more obtainable. Avoiding the big names will still be tough though, with so many still in. The likes of MFaulkner, RoysBrotherJohnson, Kyle (who ousted monstery 53-50), Fran, RafaMC, HammerTime, llama and Steve are just some of the big names taking their place in the hat for the second round.
The full draw for the second round will be made soon and will hopefully be published in the next couple of days. So commiserations to all of you who are out, but there is always next time, and well done all those through to the second round.
