Sunday certainly gave us plenty to think about – other than wondering where Drogba gets his electrocution lessons. Shocking. Here’s another random collection of thoughts, vaguely relevant to our plight as fantasy football managers with too much time on our hands…

Chelsea’s defence is standing alone…
In a season where clean sheets have become endangered, the Chelsea back four has now clearly emerged as the one true source of defensive investment. Sunday’s shut-out against United was their seventh clean sheet of the season – three ahead of their nearest rivals. They haven’t conceded in the last five games at Stamford Bridge and have conceded seven on the road – only United and City have faired better on their travels.

Chelsea’s fixtures look fairly tricky in the short term with trips to Arsenal and City to come in gameweeks 14 and 15 respectively. After this however, they have an incredible run of opponents (EVE POR whm bir FUL hul SUN) that threaten a string of defensive returns. The message is clear then – consider shifting some cash from the forward line and start making plans for a Chelsea defender now. Maybe even invest in a Cech/Terry/Cole, supplemented by an Ivanovic from gamewekek 16 onwards.

Ancelotti is yet to find his diamond solution…
While defensively Chelsea have all the answers, in attack there is still one area of concern. Deco got his chance to sparkle on the point of Ancelotti’s midfield diamond, after Joe Cole was handed that position against Atletico in midweek. Ancelotti opted for the experience of Deco on Sunday, but frustrated by the toil of Darren Fletcher, he failed to make an impression. It’s clear then that the Chelsea boss is yet to find a solution here. Expect Joe Cole to get his chance against Wolves next time out. The place is very much up for grabs.

Dempsey is on spot-kicks…
In the absence of Murphy and Johnson, it’s not been clear just who would step up and take over spot-kick duties for Fulham. We got our answer on Sunday as Clint Dempsey converted the penalty after being felled by Bramble. While both Murphy and Johnson could make returns after the international break, Dempsey’s goal on Sunday will only increase the amount of attention he’ll draw going into Fulham’s double gameweek. In case you missed it, strong fixtures over the next three, with three home games in a row (bir BLA BOL SUN), make him a immensley attractive proposition along with team-mates Hangeland, Schwarzer, Duff and Zamora.

Scharner remains upfield…
The Austrian international only returned an assist against Fulham but continues to play up in an attacking midfield role, notching four attempts on goal in Sunday’s game. For a while it looked as though his starting role was under threat from Koumas and Gomes. Now it appears he has made that position his own with his work rate and aerial threat. Firmly installed on the Watchlist, in a season where clean sheets are hard to come by, he represents a good option, particularly when Wigan have home games against Sunderland and Birmingham in the next three gameweeks.

Bullard is back…
A man-of-the-match performance from Jimmy helped steer Hull to the rarest and most precious of victories on Sunday. One start, one assists, four goal attempts and most significantly of all – a maximum of three Fantasy Premier League bonus points. Bullard will go on gaining these if Hull can keep on gaining league points. As an owner of Stephen Hunt, I’m certainly concerned that his output will suffer from Bullard’s arrival on the scene (certainly when it comes to FPL bonus).

With two home games to come in gameweek 13 (WHM EVE), the tassel-haried Tiger looks a good prospect if you’re looking for further double gameweek investment. Add him to your thinking for mid-price midfielders, along with Dempsey and Dunn. Although with so many decent options in midfield (add Reid, Taylor and Milner to those other two), Hull will need a full revival if we are to consider Bullard beyond the next few weeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
