Morning folks. Following on from the midnight preamble, here’s a second jaunt at a more civilised hour. Read on as I peer into the minds of the journalists picking the teams for The Sun and The Times, pick out some more scary statistics to give Lampard backers some last minute jitters and give you an insight into my own deadline dilemmas…
Okay, after sifting through The Guardian’s lineup predictions just after midnight, let’s kick off the morning with The Sun. Starting with United at Fulham and they also have Anderson in the midfield. He sits alongside Giggs who remains a doubt for today’s game with a hamstring injury. Vidic is in their United lineup, alongside Carrick with no place for De Laat. I’m certainly not sure about that. For me, De Laat will start either at right-back or in central defence.
Their Chelsea lineup includes both Ballack and Mikel, despite the hint from Ancelotti that one or both could be rested against West Ham on Sunday. Gerrard keeps a deeper central midfield role in the Liverpool lineup, with Kuyt again pushed up in support of the striker. Torres starts in this lineup with Aurelio on the left of midfield and Insua recalled at left-back.
Denilson takes up Fabregas’ position in the Arsenal midfield – again then, this is another paper who doesn’t feel that Wenger will put faith in Ramsey. The City lineup sees a return for Bellamy with Robinho making way. Like us, the Sun see Onuoha in central defence replacing Lescott, with Kompany in the holding midfield role for the suspended De Jong. Steve Bruce will go with a 4-5-1 according to the Sun. There’s no place for Kenwyne Jones in their lineup.
Moving on to The Times this morning and yet again we see a predicted start for Anderson in the United midfield (that’s all three papers predicting a start for the Brazilian). This time alongside Scholes with no place for injury doubt Giggs. De Laat takes up a central defensive role with this paper clearly doubting the chances of Vidic making the game.
Their Chelsea lineup is identical to the Sun, with Ballack and Mikel both starting. Only The Guardian then seem to pick up on Ancelotti’s hint at resting the midfield pairing. Again, it’s Denilson in the Arsenal midfield – leaving us out on our own when it comes to predicting a start for Ramsey.
Aquilani will earn his first Premier League start at Portsmouth according to The Times. He comes in alongside Mascherano, with Gerrard presumably restored in the attacking role behind Torres. I think this is likely, although I see a recall for Lucas rather than a Aquilani debut.
Interestingly, The Times are also the only paper to predict a recovery for Wright-Phillips. He sits in their City lineup with again, no place for Robinho. Bellamy is recalled to the left side of an attacking trio with Tevez and Adebayor. The Times stick with a 4-4-2 for Sunderland, with Jones starting up front with Bent. Cattermole starts in both The Sun and The Times lineups.
In addition, all three papers – The Guardian, The Sun and The Times see Basham starting for the suspended Muamba in the Bolton lineup. I prefer a start for Gardner myself but we shall see.
Just to stress, you shouldn’t be perturbed by any of these predictions. The credibility of The Times for example, is clearly in question given that they predict a start for Brett Emerton in the Rovers lineup. He’s sidelined for three weeks with a groin injury. Having said that, I find it a decent exercise as a last minute sanity check and every now and then it turns up a line of thinking that I haven’t explored.
The Saturday papers are also full of great little stats. I went through the best of the Guardian’s last night, this morning I particularly like the statistic on Stewart Downing’s shooting. He has had an incredible 89 consecutive Premier League shots on goal without scoring. The average is just 11. Some of Downing’s 89 shots were even penalty kicks if my painful memories serve me right. What price a goal against Stoke? Ah, 10/1 – thanks Paddy.
Here’s another one for all those backing Frank Lampard for returns against West Ham. Lampard’s goal’s per game average against other Premier League clubs is 0.31 goals. Against West Ham its 0.13. Contrast that with his yellow cards – against other clubs 0.09 per game. Against West Ham it’s 0.26. So then, we can expect zero goals and a booking from Frank on Sunday. Comforting stats for all those handing the armband to Frank this week.
Finally, just a word from me on my own fantasy lineup this gameweek. In a nutshell there’s nothing to tell. Drogba’s return to fitness means I’m not pushed into making a transfer this week, so I’m abstaining. I’m backing O’Hara off my bench as a replacement for Fabregas and I’ll be banking my transfer for next gameweek when I can get a better assessment on the Arsenal skipper’s fitness. Much as I hate sitting still in the Fantasy Premier League game (particulary after a bad scoring week), sometimes it can work out for the best. Darren Bent and Matt Taylor get another chance then. Don’t let me down boys.
Good luck to all, particularly those playing Fantasy Premier League cup matches this gameweek. That’s all of you surely?
