Both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will undergo scans today on the injuries sustained in the shock FA Cup defeat to Reading. Meanwhile Yossi Benayoun also picked up an injury last night and there are early reports indicating that he now faces a month out of action.

Rafa Benitez confirmed in his post-match comments that Gerrard had indeed tweaked a hamstring, while Torres’ setback is a knee injury…

“Both players will have a scan and we have to wait for the doctor. Gerrard has a problem with his hamstring and Torres twisted his knee.”

It’s thought that both were withdrawn as a precaution, although the extent of the injuries are not yet known. Today’s scans will tell us more but right now, both look doubtful for the trip to Stoke – Liverpool’s first fixture in their double gameweek…

While we’re still awaiting firm news on Gerrard and Torres, the latest reports on Benayoun do carry more detail and give cause for concern. Articles in Israel are claiming that Benayoun is facing a month on the sidelines as a result of the rib injury sustained in the Reading defeat. While Benayoun struggled to pin down a regular starting role under Rafa, despite strong form, this will come as a major blow in the light of a possible term of absence for Gerrard.

It now looks as though Benitez will have to hurry the progress of new signing Maxi Rodriguez who was unveiled to the Anfield faithful last night. The Argentine won’t have been too impressed by the action that unfolded from his seat in the stands and will likely come into the side burdened with pressure to make things happen. Rafa will certainly be hoping that he can hit the ground running. It seems unlikely given Liverpool’s current level of confidence and form.

The inclusion of Rodriguez in the Liverpool lineup will likely see him handed a role on the right-side of midfield, with Kuyt set to be shifted to a more central role. That would seem more likely if Gerrard does indeed miss the trip to the Britannia this weekend.

We will bring you more on the potential of Rodriguez in a full Scout Report very soon, but right now Kuyt looks the best option for those still entertaining the idea of investing in Liverpool’s attacking options for the double gameweek. Kuyt has failed to hit the heights of last season but will need to step up this gameweek should Rafa get bad news on Gerrard and Torres.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
