Rio Ferdinand will return to the United lineup for their Old Trafford clash with Hull on Saturday.
Ferdinand has missed a staggering 19 matches as a result of a recurrence of a back injury suffered in pre-season but will now return to boost their assault on the title. Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Rio has impressed in full training and will be eased back in against Phil Brown’s side in United’s second fixture of gameweek 22…
“I think Rio will play against Hull, which is good news,” he said. “He’s been training very well in the last two weeks so it’s time to bring him back. It’s a big boost because we’ve had a rough time at the back with Rio, Edwin van der Sar, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic and John O’Shea all being injured at one stage or another.”
For Fantasy Managers it means increased competition for starting roles within a back four that has kept 3 clean sheets in the last 6 league outings. This means that Wes Brown and Jonny Evans come under instant pressure for Saturday’s game, with one of them likely to drop to the bench. Personally my money is on Evans but it’s a close call…
Right now Vidic is also out of the picture with a nerve problem in his leg. Ferguson states that he remains a fortnight from a return in today’s article…
“Nemanja Vidic is still probably about two weeks away, I imagine, but we’re getting closer to getting the full squad back.”
I for one, wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in contention for the0 gameweek 24 trip to the Emirates though, leaving both Evans and Brown frozen out. There’s a chance that Ferguson will opt to shift Brown to compete with Rafael and Gary Neville for the right-back spot but right now, that looks a forlorn and very insecure hope for Brown owners.
The return of Ferdinand and Vidic, plus that of Van der Sar in goal, should now hand United much improved defensive stability. That will make all three popular targets, although Evra perhaps remains the most likely fantasy favourite in the United rearguard. The right-back spot will require monitoring though. With O’Shea recently written off for the rest of the season, Rafael would make an excellent cheap acquisition should he cement his starting berth at full-back.
