We’re still awaiting news on the extent of Matt Etherington’s knee injury sustained in Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Man City. The Stoke winger suffered what is thought to be ligament damage in the 1-1 draw and was carried from the field after just 14 minutes, following a challenge with Wayne Bridge. He left Eastlands on crutches and is expected to have scans today.
The immediate prognosis isn’t good, with fears that Etherington, arguably Stoke’s best player this season, will be out for several months as a result. However, Stoke boss Tony Pulis was hoping for a reprieve in his post-match comments…
“Matt is a worry but we won’t know exactly what is what until we’ve seen the results of a scan on his knee…Hopefully, fingers crossed, it is not as bad as first feared. The doctor said it might be one where the ligament has just gone over the bone.”
Etherington has offered decent value in fantasy terms of late, having notched three goals and eight assists so far this term. He has proved a popular target for managers looking to invest in Stoke players for this current gameweek and chipped in with an assist and his second consecutive maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus haul, in the first fixture at Wigan last Tuesday.
Stoke have their second match of the gameweek, ironically against City, at the Britannia tomorrow night. Etherington will certainly sit out of that which will come as a blow to his owners, particularly those who have also suffered as a result of the departure of Carlos Tevez to Argentina after being granted leave by Man City.
Without Etherington, Pulis could well turn to Liam Lawrence who has so far failed to earn regular starts this season. Lawrence also picked up a knee injury in Saturday’s Cup tie, along with full-back Andy Wilkinson who injured an ankle. According to the Stoke boss, both are in with a chance of making tomorrow’s game…
“Liam got a kick across his knee and needed a few stitches. His ligament is sore as well. Andy went over on his ankle, but we think both him and Liam have got a chance this week.”
Rory Delap is of course another option in a wide role and he would seem a likely starter against City given the problems he caused with his long-throws in the Cup tie.
