Today has been all about waiting to hear updates on Wayne Rooney’s sprained ankle. At the time of writing this article, there has been no official statement from Manchester United, and the lead story on the club’s website gives no indication of the extent of the injury ahead of the team’s return to Manchester this afternoon…

Some sources have begun to speculate on how long the striker is likely to be out. Sky Sports News “understands” that Rooney will be sidelined for two to four weeks. The Daily Mail have taken Sky Sports News’ “understanding” and used the same time scale in their coverage of the injury. They report that as soon as the plane lands in Manchester at about 3:30pm this afternoon, Rooney will be taken straight to a medical facility to have it scanned and assessed.

Other sources, including the Manchester Evening News, are suggesting he could be out for as much as six weeks, but accept very little is known at this point. IMScouting, on the other hand, goes as far as saying Rooney will “definitely miss the Premier League encounter with Chelsea on Saturday”.

The Telegraph and the Guardian both take a look at the previous Wayne Rooney foot injuries. The Telegraph article lists this as the tenth of his career at both United and Everton, while the Guardian goes one step further and states how long each injury kept him out for.

For three of the four sprained ankles listed, Rooney was out for between two to four weeks. For the most recent, suffered against AaB Aalborg in October 2008, Rooney started and scored against Blackburn Rovers three days later.

So from a fantasy perspective we should perhaps sit tight, at least until we hear some news from the club. For the time being however, consider yourself up-to-date.
